I'm working on my Wife's DELL XPS 17 L1702X laptop SERVICE TAG: <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>.
It was working just fine the other day, and for months/years before that. It was left on overnight, as is usual. In the morning, the screen was black, the battery light was blinking 4 times Amber and then 1 time white, over an over again. No beeps are ever heard, regardless of how I try to start the machine. There is no DELL Logo screen, no POST ... nothing, other then the fan coming on at full speed.
I have read numerous posts on similar problems with this model, and have done the following:
1) Removed battery, all peripherals, USB devices, etc., unplugged the power adapter, and then held down the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any flea power. I've done this in between every other thing I have tried - including removing the internal 2032 Motherboard Battery. It still will not even go into POST on attempted restart with or without the battery in place.
2) I have tried another known working DELL power supply, as I have an identical machine that is working. Both power supplies will start my machine and charge my battery.
3) Holding down the Fn key while pressing the power button does nothing.
It is important to note that:
1) The power button does not glow any color at any time.
2) When I press the power button for 3 seconds, with or without the battery in place - I hear what initially sounds like the hard drives beginning to spin up, the DVD lens move slightly, and then the fan comes on and stays on at high speed.
3) The machine cannot be "shut down", by that I mean stopping the fan - unless the battery and power supply are removed.
Although I have seen posts where motherboards are replaced due to this problem - the problem always seems to return to those customers.
Being that the power button does not glow any color at any time: Is it possible that the power button board itself is faulty or the electronics on that board? Even though it will cause the unit to "appear" to start powering up after it is pressed?
