XPS (9550) BIOS 1.1.19 has killed the HDMI link when monitor turned off

Hi all

Laptop is hooked up to 4k monitor. Since updating the BIOS to 1.1.19 last week, when I turn the monitor off and then back on again later (the laptop stays on but closed during the monitor being off) all the Windows have resized as if they were on the laptop screen.

I can only assume that the HDMI port is now assuming that 'monitor off' means 'switch to laptop display panel' rather than 'wait for instructions'(!), like me opening the lid.

Always worked fine before... switch monitor back on 12 hours after switching off, and the windows are all same size and in the same place.

Can Dell confirm whether the way the HDMI monitors activity was changed in the recent BIOS update?

Thanks :)

Dell Inspiron laptop not starting up at all

About three days ago I tried waking my laptop up from sleep mode, only to see a blank screen an my laptop sounding like its not even on. I'm not sure what caused it to happen but the past three days I've been trying out different things to get it to work:

  • I took the battery and ac plug out, held the power button down for a set number of seconds then inserted the power cord, tried it, nothing, then the battery, same results.
  • I tried hitting fn+f5 and f8 (different times of course) but got no results either.

I'm not sure what I can do an I'm worried that my laptop might be on the end of its rope, the battery itself is towards the end of its usable life but I'd be able to still use my laptop if I had it plugged in, not sure what else I can do.

alls got bad

This is sad, waited 1 moth for the laptop, did all my research. Once I got it and turn it on, the xps worked like a charm. Once I connected to the internet first thing was to update bios and drivers. Worst decision, after 10 or 15 minutes of use the screen goes all black. Force shut down and repeat :/ I even downgraded the bios but did not work.

For the touchscreen i need to have an other connector on my mainboard? if yes, where? or is connected in the display board? If is the possibility to add touchscreen, where can i buy it?

Dell Studio 1558 Cooling Solution

Dear @Dell,

I have happily used my Studio 1558 Ci3 3GBram ATI 5470 1GB 128GB-SATA 512 GB-HDD (on optical bay with caddy) for more than 5 yrs (bought in July 2010). Recently however the graphic started throwing tantrums and gave the classic VGA failure screen (Green gibberish on BIOS and then no video). So I promptly got a 3.5W thermal pad (blue color) and replaced the burnt pad (Red pad that had a burn hole) on the VGA chip. Also I replaced the paste with some noctua. After 5 restarts same old story. Windows starts throwing blue screen when watching movies.

Also laptop touch-pad gets very hot due to south bridge.

Now I also tried upgrading the RAM to 4X2 for a total of 8 GB. BIOS shows all the RAM but windows fails to boot and goes into a loop on the boot screen (Win 7 Premium x64). At this point the south bridge heats like crazy. the first attempt at RAM upgrade started the touch-pad heating.

So finally I want to replace my thermal pad and south-bridge pad (whatever is under the heat-sink) with copper shims as I find my thermal paste to be excellent (fan temps are low throughout and fan spins only once at windows startup and then goes silent and yes it does come on again when I am on youtube).

Guys please help me and suggest the correct thickness of shims that I can buy off the shelf and that will fit nicely without any tinkering.

Thanks again for hearing me out,

Sincerely,

Antarix

Sporadic Hard Disk Failure, what does this noise mean?

(Please visit the site to view this audio)Hi everyone,

I've got an Inspiron 7537 with a 1TB Seagate Hybrid HD ST1000LM014-1EJ164 with 8GB cache that has been giving trouble since i bought the computer.  When it is switched on it will periodically make this noise (attached) and refuse to boot up.  The Dell splash screen comes up but then says something along the lines of no hard disk detected.  I've installed  all the relevant firmware but the problem persists.

Had it something also to do with the accelerometer?

So i've recorded it trying and failing to boot up, three times, as you can hear.

Any information would be hugely appreciated as it's quite an unreliable machine now.

Precision 7510 with Nvidia Quadro M2000M graphic card

Hi,

Few time ago I ordered Dell Precision 7510 with graphic card Nvidia Quadro M2000M. When computer was delivered I discovered that this card is not visible.

I contacted support and they suggest change settings in BIOS and manual turn on second card. Unfortunately this change made that during start screen was all time black.

I upgrade BIOS, this not help. I check computer with Ubuntu and guys from other forum says that I also don't have on the list of devices

00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sky Lake PCIe Controller (x16) (rev 07)

Support think that graphic card or mainboard is damage and they order new elements. They didn't know when this devices will be delivered and they don't want extend guarantee for this time when device is not working properly. They don't want to change also laptop for new devices without checking of problem, and they don't want to send serviceman earlier than parts will be delivered.

This Dell Support politic is very strange for me. This is normal procedure that Client can not use computer for months and Dell don't care about it ?

How do I find out if my Inspiron 17R 5720 supports a back-lit keyboard?

There are many sites that sell back-lit keyboards for the  Inspiron 17R 5720, but they all have a disclaimer that says something like so "......If your laptop mainboard doesn't support backlit function then the back-lit feature won't work".

Well how do I determine if my mainboard supports it if narrowing my laptop down to 17R 5720 is not clear enough? Are there sub-species of 17R 5720 (17R 5720-A, 17R 5720-B, 17R 5720-C)? How much more specific can I get in order to determine if the kb will work on system?

Impossible to get a straight answer anywhere.

Degrading problems, no install or media discs, online support not working

I've tried everything, something is wrong with my Latitude E6540, more and more things are going wrong, I've scanned with different anti-virus programs (the most popular ones), I've tried Dell fixes from their website using my service tag, it's now suggesting to get the install and drivers/media CD/DVDs, but they didn't come with the laptop, I'm at a loss, I don't even have the Windows product key, I don't want a $1500 laptop to be an oversized coaster.

Dell System Detect crashing

I'm trying to troubleshoot my system, I logged into Dell and clicked into my service tag and clicked the link to run DellSystemDetectLauncher.exe, and it starts running Dell System Detect then crashes with error:

Description:
Stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: DellSystemDetect.exe
Application Version: 6.12.0.5
Application Timestamp: 5681825a
Fault Module Name: KERNELBASE.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.19135
Fault Module Timestamp: 56a1c9ac
Exception Code: e0434f4d
Exception Offset: 000000000000965d
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID: 1033

If I click "Check online for a solution" it does nothing.

Note: I uninstalled the Dell software that had that major security flaw (where it installed a root certificate that decrypted all of your https websites and allowed hackers to spoof your computer or take it over or something), but I don't remember the name of that program or if Dell System Detect needs it or if it's still safe.

I think the problem with the degredation (and problems I've had since I got the laptop) has been Dell software (programs and drivers), and I'd love to just install clean Windows 7 Pro (which came with the system but I don't have the product key either), but if I can get this thing to run properly, great.

UEFI HD to SSD upgrade

I have a Inspiron 15-7548, I am trying to upgrade the HD to Samsung 850 EVO SSD, I am running WIn10 Pro. I have been futzing for a week and a half trying to do this. I plugged the SSD in via USB3 and successful used Samsung's migration software (NOT magician), Acronis would not work. When I replace the HD with the SSD, the UEFI says no boot device, If I point the UEFI to the Dellboot.cd file, it fails the UEFI test. If I hit f12 during boot, I can boot the SSD but system still says the C: is the Western Digital original hard drive. I have backed up the original HD to a USB HD, I have made a Windows recovery cd. I am looking for knowledge of what steps I have, or should have taken in this effort. And yes I am open to starting the upgrade all over. I have not had much experience with UEFI. I have not been able to find much information on this on the web. Help/experience with this will be much appreciated.

Inspiron 11 3000 series keyboard not working/sometime working

Just sharing...My keyboard stopped working one day. It sometimes worked when I started the computer but stopped working after that. I followed instructions, and updated the drivers to no avail. On youtube I saw a few video regarding problems with windows 10 and the keyboard not working. I had installed windows 10 about a month before my keyboard stopped working. The video states you must go to the settings, ease of access, and keyboard.  Within keyboard you just change the various switches as instructed. I restarted my computer and to my amazement it worked. I'm just putting it out there should anyone be facing the same problem.

Latitude E5550: Install SSD and Upgrade to Windows 10 recommended procedure?

$

Hi there!

I have just received my Latitude E5550 with Windows 7 installed. I want to replace my 1 TB HDD with a Samsung SSD 850 EVO and upgrade to Windows 10.

The laptop does not have a CD-ROM and I will have to copy any DVD installation media to a USB stick first. With the laptop I received a DVD with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (OEM Activation 3.0 required).

What is the best procedure? Should I swap the HDD with the new SSD, install Windows 8.1 from  a USB stick, and then upgrade to Windows 10? Or should I upgrade to Windows 10 first, swap the HDD with an SSD and re-install Windows 10 on the SSD?

I would be very grateful for any tips&tricks.

Thanks in advance,

Pieter

Inspiron 17 7000 DVD Optical Drive Draw Stuck

Morning - I got this laptop around September and the optical DVD drive is now stuck shut. I haven't used the drive (almost at all) since I was setting everything up - and there is no disc inserted.

I would not have known but there was a ticking sound and I couldn't figure out what it was: it turned out to be the DVD drive trying to open (I don't know why). I tried putting a paper clip into the tiny hole but it does not release the draw. (If I try 'Eject', or press the little button, the light glows green and it ticks four or five times, then gives up.)

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Chris

White screen after ram upgrade on E6410

Hi, I replaced two modules of Samsung ram (below features)

Manufacturer (ID) Samsung (CE000000000000000000)
Size 2048 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Part number M471B5773CHS-CH9
Nominal Voltage 1.50 Volts

with two modules of Kingston KVR13S9S8/4 that should have the same features. I updated bios to the last version (A16) and ram is correctly recognised in bios (total of 8GB), but when I try to boot Win7 x64 when "Starting Windows" appears, I get a white screen and the computer reboots. What could be the problem?
