Dell e7450 bios forced memory down to 1600mhz

I think it was after bios A09 that my memory is forced to 1600mhz.

I have upgraded my memory to crucial 2x8gb 1866mhz ram BLS2K8G3N18AES4 and used to
have them running 1866mhz as they should.
It takes away a notch of graphics performance and I hope next bios update would fix this back.

I am currently with bios A10 and it has the same problem. Don't restrict people's choices of customisation.
Otherwise I have been satisfied with my laptop, so please fix this.

Precision 7510 blue screen resolved

I have a Precision 7510 i7, 16GB, NVMe, Quadro M2000M, IGZO 4k

From day one, when I started Dell's Support Assist, I got a blue screen (BSOD).  I also saw ~1-4 random BSOD a day (error msg BAD_HEADER_POOL) for about 3 weeks.  The machine performs much faster than my previous machine, so I decided to put up with it a while so I could finish my current project with it.

When the project was done, I called Dell Tech Support and described the problem, and without hesitation, they replaced the machine.  "OK", I thought, "That was easy."

New machine (got it very fast, like 5 days) = BSOD when starting Support Assist right out of the box.  So I emailed back to the rep (Neil, was very helpful) and let him know.  He did a little more digging and recommended that I uninstall Support Assist and Dell Precision Optimizer because perhaps there's a problem with the NVMe drive with those apps.  (Interestingly, when I run Dell's boot-up diagnostics, it fails right away because it says the hard drive isn't installed.  I can ignore and the rest of the diags run properly.  Probably related.)  So I uninstalled Support Assist and Dell Precision Optimizer and haven't had a BSOD since.  Nice!!  Neil advised that the Dell Precision Optimizer isn't going to really gain me any performance based on my machine's config, plus I can just use web support, so nothing is lost.  On one hand, the DPO did have a nice "analyze system" feature that gathered relevant event logs, but I can always just look at those in the Event Viewer.  Hopefully, now that the BSOD is gone, I won't give a flip about my event logs.

A separate issue is a blank screen when disconnecting an HDMI cable and Switchable Graphics is disabled in BIOS, but Dell has acknowledged that should be fixed in a forthcoming BIOS update.  Overall though, I really like this machine, and I hope this information helps someone else!

M4800 and Nvidia K2100M Video / Optimus Issues

Is anyone else having issues with their M4800, running a Nvidia K2100M, and system crashes, lockups, and video drivers not loading?  I have an open case with Dell support and so far they have been unable to resolve it.  It is one of the most peculiar issues I've seen on a Precision Laptop in a long time.  The system is running Win7 Pro x64 and has a standard HD screen (1920x1080).

Basically, I can't get the Nvidia driver/card to work.  The system worked fine for the first couple of months we had it, but then started acting odd.  It would not POST, so Dell swapped out the motherboard.  It would then POST and I could then log into Windows, but then I couldn't get external monitors to work right with a dock.

I then started troubleshooting with the laptop by itself and discovered the Nvidia driver would not load and device manager said it had insufficient resources to load.  Dell then swapped out the Video card, but the same problems continued although device manager now says Windows has stopped this device as it has reported problems.  What problems, it is a brand new K2100M card?

I have tired a lot of different permutations of removing/installing the HD4600 drivers and the K2100M drivers, along with different K2100M driver versions, and all bug out with either a BSOD, system lockup, or the Nvidia driver just not loading with the error mentioned above.  I always install the HD4600 driver first and then the Nvidia driver.

I've also re-installed Windows twice, once from the system recovery image and once from the Dell Win7 installation disk and all yield the same issue.  I've removed memory modules one at a time with no change.  Diags have always passed on the system as well.

Very strange problem.  Has anyone else seen similar issues or have any suggestions on what else I can try?  I am waiting to hear back from Dell support on what they want to do next, but in the meantime I am also looking for answers.

Thanks,

Jeff

Dell XPS 17 - L702X - Very hard to power up/boot - Alim issue ?

Hello all,

First, I want to apologize for my bad English, it is not my usual language. I will try to do my best for describing my issue. Thanks in advance for the time you give to me for reading my post.

So a friend of mine come to give me her laptop, a DELL XPS 17" L702X, she was facing an issue: she doesn't manage to power up her laptop. LED power button turn on for 1/2 second, and nothing else happens...

So I try to power it up, and in fact for power it up I have to play with the power button, I need to press it for a long time (30 second) and click it many times for managing to power up the computer.

When the computer is started, everything is OK, I run the DELL diagnostics (full) everything is OK too.

I can use the computer for many hours, everything is still OK.

If I reboot the computer from Windows, it works and reboot normally.

But if I shut down the computer and I try to power up with power button, I have the same issue, the Lord of the power button light for 1/2 second and nothing else happen and I have to play and long press the power button to power it up.

So I change all the top case palm rest cover (with power button, ribbon, etc...), the computer's behavior is still the same.

I have reset the mainboard with a clearCMOS, I have tried to disconnect and reconnect everything, I have tried to boot with only the necessary component (without hard drive, RAM, DVD, WLAN card, etc....), it is the same.

So I suspect the capacitors to be faulty, I check the mainboard, I see just 1 chemical capacitor and it seems to be OK.

How can I check that? Is there any other capacitors like ceramic capacitors? How to check that too? What do you think about that issue?

Thanks in advance,

Kind regards,

I was noticed by Dell Update to upgrade to new BIOS version A12 and I did that. I was reinstalling all system due a HardDrive change (installed a Samsung 850 PRO) and I do not get the GT 740M woking in any way.

I installed Windows several times, I updated the NVidea drives and I did not could get it working again.

So I did the BIOS downgrade from A12 to A11 and got everything working well again.

Dell should investigate this,,,

Inspiron 7000 Hard Drive Failure Question - Newbie

$

Good morning. New here, pretty good with DIY as long as I have good internet friends to help!  Our laptop stopped booting up, got caught in the Repairing PC loop.  Ran Dell diagnostics and came up with error code 0142 validation 94589.  Hard drive failure.   I booted up with Linux Lime to see if I could possibly move some of the files I would like saved but I couldn't figure out how to do it;  when I tried to open what I assumed are the files on the hard drive I got linux error "Unable to mount OS" .

The last time I backed up my photos, videos, and music was about 3 months ago, so it isn't the end of the world if I lose a few months of files

I am now down to what I think are two choices:   replace the hard drive myself and re-install windows;  or bring to a computer repair place to see if they can do any more than I have been able to do (retrieve the photos, files, etc)

1)  Based on what I have said above, is there any chance a repair place will retrieve my files from the failed hard drive?

2) if I replace the hard drive myself, do I need to pay for Windows 10 even though I had it already on my failed hard drive? If so, how?

Thanks!

Dell M3800 memory issue - test fails only when two sticks are installed

$

Hello,

After experiencing weird behavour with this Precision M3800, I did a preboot test and had some odd results - hoping for some guidance...

Symptoms:

- Cursor freezes for 1-2 seconds at a non determinate interval (keyboard still works and processes keep running during this time)

- two instances of computer not waking from sleep (first instance was recovered by going into preboot test and then rebooting, second instance required disassembly and unplugging battery)

Test results:

- If both memory modules are installed, I get error 0122 - memory issue in DIMM1

- If I swap the modules I get the same error - 0122 in DIMM1

This implies the slot is bad. However:

- If I run module 1 in slot 1 alone, test passes with no errors

- If I run module 2 in slot 1 alone, test pass

- Same result for both modules one at a time in slot 2

Bottom line is I only get the error if both modules are installed yet separate testing implies each slot is fine and each module is fine.

Any ideas? I don't want to start buying memory or motherboards for no reason... Unfortunately this is 3 months out of warranty so if it's a hardware error I will be extremely disappointed.

Thanks in advance!

Upgrading RAM for an Inspiron 15-5558

I'd like to upgrade the RAM of my Inspiron 15-5558 that I bought last year in US. It has an Intel Core i7 and came with 6 GB (4+2) and I'd like to take it to 16 GB (8+8).

On the Reference Guide I can see the Type and Speed (Dual-channel DDR3L and 1600 MHz). Are there any other characteristics or requirements that I should consider for getting those RAMs? (for example: can I use any brand of RAM?)

Thanks!

Multiple Latitude E5500 Laptops Touchpad issues

$

So here is the situation in a nutshell:

I was doing maintenance on a cart of 30 Dell Latitude E5500 Laptops, and now randomly certain laptops have begun having this issue:

After the computer starts, the touchpad will work for a bit, but then randomly it will stop responding to anything after a reasonably short period of time. On some of the affected laptops, the touchpad will start working again once I plug in a USB mouse, and then continue working after the external mouse is unplugged without any further issues, but once I restart those machines the issue still remains.

Here is the relevant laptop info:

OS: Windows 7 Pro (x64)
Bios: A19

I have tried everything driver related I could find, uninstalling, rolling back, updating, installing from other sources, but nothing seems to have any effect. I have also tried system restore.

The issue did not seem to happen when the computers were booted into safe mode.

I have attached the list of maintenance steps that were being performed.

Extension cable for Dell TB15 docking station?

$

The design of the Dell TB15's cable is really poor. The cable is hardwired on the docking station on the left side of the unit, which is same side the thunderbolt port is on the XPS15 9550. This gives you very little options on where to put the dock, since the cable is so short.

Has anyone found an TB3 extension cable that their using?

I'd really like to move the docking station away from where I keep my laptop. If I could find a 10' cable for the docking station, that would be perfect.

However, I'm not finding much in the way of female/male cables. I'm pretty sure I'd need an TB "active" cable.

Has anyone seen an extension cable that would work?

Thanks!

Vostro 3550 CPU upgrade

$

Hi,

I have a 2011 Vostro 3550 with i3-2330M and would like to upgrade the CPU. I'm wondering whether the BIOS limits the CPUs I can use? Or will any CPU with the proper socket and TDP work?

I am looking into the following:

-i5 2540M - cheapest option, should be a noticable upgrade, but not used officially in this model, so I'm worried the BIOS might block it.

-i7 2620M - best processor shipped with this laptop that I can find available online. Twice as expensive as the i5 above with minimal better performance.

-i7 2630QM - quad core with 45W TDP (vs 35W on my i3). The quad core is tempting, but I'm worried about the TDP.

Thanks for your help.
