Dell 3330 only boots after few tries

Hi all,

I am experiencing some problems with booting my 3330. When I try to boot the laptop only the lights on the keyboard light up, the screen stays black. After this I can only switch it off with the on/off button. Sometimes i have to try this for 2 times before it actually starts but sometimes also for 10 or 50 times.

Anyone knows what the problem could be?

These are the specs:

Latitude E6420 DELL secure manager

Hi guys I am having an issue with my laptop. It was updated using dell drivers and apps that match the service tag and everything was working smoothly until I rebooted today and now a password is requested on the bios screen before I can go any further. I don't have a password on my OS or my bios but this Dell secure manager must have chosen a default one on my behalf. Now I can't get into anything, it won't boot to CD drive or usb it just stays on this bios password screen. I tried nearly everything I could think of. I removed the cmos battery. Tried various possible default passwords and nothing. I don't really want to try shorting the nvram chip, too much could go wrong with powering up a disassembled laptop and even then it might not work. Any help at all would really be appreciated.

Power Companion - Replacement cables available?

Are replacement wires available either from Dell or a Generic alternative. I've lost my 4.5mm wire on a recent trip to Europe and would rather not have to buy the whole package again. Incidently if anyone know the specific part no it might help my quest.

Moving HD to new identical PC

Dell finally sent a replacement system for my e7440.  My old e7440 has an upgraded HD however.  I upgraded to a 1TB drive about a year ago.  The new system they sent has the original 250GB drive.  If I simply move the HD from the old system to the new one, will that work?  The systems are identical other than the HD.  What about Windows 8.1, will that deactivate when I move it to the new system?  The Dell support rep says it won't deactivate but I'm not confident in their answer.  In the case where it does deactivate, is it a simple as calling the 1-800 number at the Microsoft activation center?

Thanks.

Latitude D400 CardBus PC Card slot compatible SSD or flash drive

My linux laptop is a D400. It has an unused Type II CardBus (PC Card) slot that is 54mm wide and 5mm thick. The spec sheet says it supports 3.3V and 5V cards via a 68 pin connection. The CardBus controller is the TI PCI 7510 which claims:

  • Supports 132-MBps burst transfers to maximize data throughput on both the PCI bus and the CardBus

So I wonder if there is any benefit from an SSD or flash drive product that might be used in this slot either directly or perhaps via an adapter. e.g.

  1. could it be used as a boot drive? (I don't find this in the BIOS menu)
  2. could it be used for the swap partition?
  3. could an entire linux OS be installed here? (with maybe a separate /grub on the HDD)

There are USB 2.0 ports on this machine (but not USB 3.0) and I already have wired and wireless ethernet covered with either on-board or mini PCI card devices so I really don't need any external peripherals connected via this slot.

It would only be meaningful to me if some useful function (storage or otherwise) can be housed entirely within the vacant slot with no protruding bits and insignificant power/heat dissipation.

With very small form factor USB flash drives being as cheap as they are (e.g. $20 for 64GB USB2.0 or $35 for 128GB USB3.0) a PC Card flash drive that costs more than one of these stubby form factor USB flash drives is not very appealing.

Wake on lan

Hello,
I have a Dell Precision M3800 mobile workstation. Mostly I use it with 2 external displays, keyboard and mouse attached to a D3100 docking station. During an average working day the lid remains closed except in the morning when I need to open it just to push the power button. Do you have any solution to start up the system without opening the lid? Does the BIOS support Wake On Lan feature? I am not interested in any solutions connected to hibernate/sleep modes since I prefer to power off the laptop in the evening. Thank you for your help in advance! br Laszlo

Ive had this laptop for a few years now and it started having trouble turning on for around 2 weeks, it sometimes took a few clicks of the power button to get it to turn on, however it now wont even do that, its not registering its charging (charger works fine, been used in another laptop to check) and just doesnt do anything. I have had the charging port bit looked at and that fine and ive had a new battery put in, anybody have any ideas what could be wrong with it? No MIDI communication after upgrade to Windows 10

I have a Vostro 3360 notebook and would like to upgrade to Windows 10. I have tried to twice but both times have resulted in not being able to use an external MIDI keyboard (connected via USB) with my audio production software. This setup has worked for years using Windows 7 but after upgrading, the audio software no longer receives MIDI messages from the external keyboard. The MIDI keyboard is a class compliant device guaranteed to work with Windows 10 by the manufacturer. The audio software can see the MIDI ports associated with the MIDI keyboard but is not able to communicate with them. I get similar results when using a software utility to test MIDI communication within the system. The utility can "see" the MIDI ports associated with my USB keyboard but can't communicate with it. My system is completely up to date before the upgrade. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I just got a call from a restricted number from someone with an Indian accent claiming to be from Dell Technical support and telling me that I my computer was generating error messages that Dell support could see. I told him that the PC didn't exist anymore, but he didn't understand me and he kept trying to ask me where i took the computer. I couldn't understand him because of his accent, and finally he just hung up, and I thought...That Was Weird!!

But how did he get my phone number AND the type of PC I had?

PC Restore causes restart loop.

I have a Dell Inspiron n7010. I used the PC Restore steps found here .  Everything was going smoothly until it said it had to restart, and that it may restart mutiple times, in order to finish the restoration. It got stuck looping over and over stating it couldn't "update, press OK to restart." also  I tried force restarting  pressing F8 a bunch of times while it was booting and going to Pc repair. It restarted and booted up some zoomed in, off centered version of Windows with a "administrator" button which wasn't one of the accounts before trying to restore the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
