Hi, new to forum. hope i am posting in the right one. just a couple of questions, be grateful for any advice/help !

System - i7-720 / GTX260M / 4GB / Bios A08

1) occassionally the laptop will not power on (about 1 in 8 boots). i have to do a hard power drain. once booted, i have to re-set the internet time. has anyone else had this?

2) looking to upgrade the GPU - any recommendations on the best upgrade (which won't cook the system)

3) anyone had experience with this GPU - Nvidia quadro fx3800M ? i have seen it on offer stating that its better than the 280M & 285M

4) will the Mx15 take 1600mhz DDR3 RAM?

Hello!

I've got a problem with my dvd reader/writer and blue-ray reader on my Alienware M17x R4 (SO : Windows 7 64 bit)

My optical drive doesn't read some dvds or cds!

the strange thing is that Nero and daemon tools read them (or better....they detect the space and the name of the dvds...so I think that there's not a hardware problem)

the problem is that win7 doesn't detect the dvd but it know that there's a dvd into the optical drive!....if I try to open the optical drive icon, I view an empty folder with space 0 byte of 0 byte....

Now I've unistalled Deamon Tools because I had a similar problem bacause of this program....but now, the problem persist!

please...can you help me?

Hello

I am using Dell N5050, and after turning on within 10 to 20 min. my laptop is frozen and i cant access any thing, even cant do ''cntrl+alt+del'', to get away from this i need to force shut down by press and hold power button.

could any one help me how to get rid of this. is it happening due to fan?

Hi,

I have an XPS L401x. The speakers were working fine until last month. Now, I hear crackling sounds and the sound output is horrible. I use the inbuilt speakers rarely. If I connect external speakers or headphones, the audio output is normal. This leads me to believe that the problem is hardware related. Is there any way I could get the speakers working normally or should I get the internal speakers replaced?

And one more question, I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB through Dell's so called service center in Kolkata, India (way back in November, 2011). When I checked my computer at the service center, the Task Manager showed 8GB RAM. So I came back home that day (which was a mistake). A week later I installed Speccy out of curiosity and noticed that the newly installed RAM module runs at 1066Mhz. The RAM module that I got out of the box runs at 1333Mhz. Because of this, the older module started to work at 1066Mhz. I went back to the service center and asked them about the new module assuming that there must have been some kind of a mixup. The guy sitting at the desk answered recklessly "That is what your system supports. You've checked your computer the other day and said it was fine. The module is functioning properly. I cannot replace it". I had a small argument with him and I lost. So, I got the new module removed. I paid almost twice the market price for that module, which I came to know later. I tried to contact Dell a million times, but failed in almost every attempt because my service tag is "invalid". I tried every thing to get a working service tag. One executive tried to help, but I later found out that he could do nothing except to escalate the issue, which did not help either.

So, to make things short, I have two questions...
1. Should I get my speakers replaced or is there an alternative solution?
2. Can I use two RAM modules with different frequencies? (I googled for the answer and found mixed suggestions. So, I decided to ask in a more appropriate place)

P.S : This would be my last computer from Dell...

Hi, I have recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5521.

The problem with the fan is that it only pushes air out from the marked area in image.

Is it regular?

it also takes more time than other Laptops to cool down the PC after running a game. I think this is also because that fan problem.

If that is not regular in fan what is the solution to it?

One Note: I never did get the fingerprint reader to work as is but was able to install AuthenTec TrueSuite.

I have been on hold with y'all for OVER AN HOUR, after waiting on hold for half an hour last night before business hours ended. I placed an order for a laptop yesterday and y'all called me to verify the order. I thought it was verified, until I got an e-mail saying that it was not verified and would be canceled if I did not call y'all to get it verified.

Well, I'm trying, but being on hold for over an hour is pretty excessive. The e-mail gave me no other options for handling this online. I'm very frustrated right now. What was the initial phone call for if not to verify? And why is the shipping date now a week later than it was?

I have purchased a usb adapter to format / restore a Western Digital disk from my M1710 laptop with my 4550 desktop..

When I originally hooked it up I got a prompt to restore it to factory settings. I chose not to because I wanted to back up some data first.

I thought I was going to format at first but then decided to try this option out first. It has Vista on it and I never had this O.S. before so I thought I would check it out .

Now I can't seem to figure out what I need to do to get this prompt again. I have an option to format disk but not sure about this one although I didn't pursue it either.. I removed it [USB Mass Storage }from the device manager but seems to just bypass that part and goes to "select what action" prompt.. I tried a different hard drive in my desktop but still get the same results.

Anyone got ideas? I will keep snooping around until I get a reply.

If I didn't include enough data I will check back and add if necessary..

I bought a refurbished dell inspiron 5050 laptop from Sears 10 months ago - very suddenly the battery stopped charging and now it wont turn on unless its plugged it, says it cant detect a battery and doesn't charge it. My husband has the same lap top, and his battery works fine when i put in into my lap top. I tried getting in touch with dell but on the initial step on their website they said my warranty had expired - i thought it was under warranty for 12 months? Sears told me to contact Dell about it. Where do I go with this? Should i still be covered by Dell?

Hello All,

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1520 (Windows Vista)

I'm currently trying to help out my cousin with his laptop that's having problems... What's happening is when you power-on the PC it begins loading, you see the Bios load screen then after that it goes to the "Dell Media Direct" loading page and after about 1 or 2 seconds, the screen goes blank... It doesn't seem like it's just colored black, I'm pretty sure at this point the monitor has no power to it..?

When the screen goes blank the laptop is still powered on. I can tell cause the Power light is still lit as well as the flashing light for the CPU is blinking (*seemingly like it should) and also if I hit the volume buttons I can hear some sound from the speakers. So I know it's still "On"...

I found the Disc which contains the "Drivers and Diagnostics" and ran the Full Test, which all Passed (*i.e. Video, sound, memeory, etc...), but I didn't think it ran a test on the HDD so I ran a separate FULL test on the HDD which all passed without any issues. Because my first inclination was that the HDD was going bad but after running that test as well as some other 3rd part HDD Diagnostic tests, the Hard Drive SEEMS ok...

As of now the only Discs he gave me was the one I mention above as well as the Disc for the "Dell Media Direct" Software. I haven't used Vista in a while so i wasn't sure if there was also a Disc to reinstall windows to restore to factory defaults, OR if it uses a Recovery partition in order to do that?

I was told by my cousin that he's not worried about ANY data on the PC so if I had to restore it to factory settings, that would be fine. So if this issue of the screen going blank isn't worth the time to try and "fix" it, then I will just restore to factory defaults once I figure out how Vista does it...

So does anyone have any ideas if this problem might be fixable? And if it's not worth the time to fix, could someone tell me how Vista gets restored to Original Factory Settings (*i.e. Disc or Recovery Partition)?

Hi I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15R direct from Dell 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems. The first time I switched it on I got the message "checking media: fail" , "check media: fail"...which sounds like a potential issue...however I thought nothing of it as the laptop still worked. I have then had the message that there is an issue with the hard drive. At the moment I am unable to even log in to the laptop as it is stuck on a continuous loop on the "preparing automatic repair"...I have left it for 2 hours and it just keeps looping. I have not loaded any program's onto the laptop or downloaded any program's.....I have literally browsed the Internet a couple of times. Please can you advise what to do...this is meant to be a brand new laptop ?! Thanks Andy

If I have 4 so-dimms of the same size, will my computer do quad interleaved?

(Right now it is doing dual interleaved, it has 2 4gb sticks and 2 8gb sticks, and I'm wondering if I should have gotten 2 more 8gb sticks, or just 2 more 4gb sticks)

I was playing a game on my Alienware the other day when it suddenly shut down, apparently from running out of battery life. I looked at my AC adapter's cord and discovered that it was in fact plugged in every way (to the wall outlet, the brick and the computer) yet the blue light on the ring of the cord was no longer on. After replugging in all the cords several times the blue light eventually came back on, though the instant I plugged it back into the laptop the blue light died. So the AC adapter is no longer supplying power to my alienware, so I cannot turn it on or do anything with it. I don't know what caused this problem or how to remedy it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
