We are facing very big problem with Dell Hardware changes in the same models. Problem is very complicated, let me describe this here.
Step1-: We use the SCCM OSD task sequences to install the laptops and desktops.
Step2-: When dell releases any new model (Laptop or Desktop) we purchase that from dell to check its compatibility with our SCCM OSD build.
Step3-: We download the available drivers from Dell Website for that model, import them to SCCM, create driver packages and adds them in SCCM OSD task sequences. Sometime Dell “Drivers.cab” may consist drivers which does not work fine with SCCM, when we manually install those drivers from Setup.exe then they works fine but when we imports those drivers .INF in SCCM and install them then it crash the OS installation.
Step4-: we have to test all driver installation in through SCCM OSD task sequence and if any of the drivers does not work, then we check with dell and Dell provides us the SCCM compatible versions and we use that. Ultimately it is a time taking process.
Step5-: After all hue and cries we prepares a working package of all drivers for a particular model by which all available hardware can be installed during SCCM OSD installation. Then we release that working SCCM Task Sequence which has the integration of working driver set in production and it uses on all our sites (more than 250 sites globally.)
Step6-: Earlier, When Dell Changes the hardware it used to change the model number and our practice (Step1 to step5) was working fine.
But since last one year Dell is changing the hardware in the existing models, for Example “Latitude E7450-: When I purchased this laptop two month back it was having different hardware, and when I am purchasing same model now, it has changed hardware.”
I released a drivers set for the model (Latitude E7450) which I purchased earlier but that drivers set is not working on the same model of laptop which are being purchase recently SCCM build fails/crash in between when it install old drivers on recently purchased model.
Again we take the same model in Lab and repeat the steps1 to step 5. But we are not sure till when this is going to work because Dell is changing the hardware in same model again and again without a prior notification of model version change.
We are facing same challenge in the below given models.
Laptop
Latitude E7450
Latitude E7440
Latitude E7240
Latitude E6540
Desktop
OptiPlex 9020
OptiPlex 3030
Workaround-: we downloaded the new updated drivers from Dell site and installed manually for these models and it worked, but we cannot do this work manually for each and every laptop of this model being purchased.
Questions from Dell-: We are facing this challenge regularly with Dell systems. Dell is changing hardware in the same model after a significant time. This time we faced this problem in India.
1-: Can we expect a solution from Dell?
2-: Is Dell changing their approach and can change hardware in any model any time. This is regularly happening after the release of E7440. Many models of dell have the changed hardware if we compare them with the same model releases earlier.
3-: How can we approve a model for global use? If hardware will be changed without changing the model number. Is there a best practice or a better approach. We ask Dell to provide their suggestions.
