It this Dell Studio XPS 1640 worth being repaired?

Last week I was given a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop computer by a friend of mine. He told me that the computer was from a person who had removed the HDD for reasons of confidentiality. Without the HDD, the computer should give me some sign of life when powered on. It does not. When I power it up, nothing happens except that the Volume Up, Mute and Volume Down LEDs blink and they blink regularly (once every second) until I power it down. Apart from these blinking LEDs, the computer is dead (no fan either). I was given the computer and I am ready to put a new HDD in it with Windows 7 (I have a license) but, before I do that, I would like to find out if surprises are on the way. I am a newbie with hardware problems.

Thank for any help.

I understand that the Dell M6800 has a backlit keyboard but mine doesn't seem to? I've never noticed it and cannot find anywhere to turn it off or on. According to the dell detect app it's "late 2013" model. Did some not come with this feature?

or can someone tell me how to fix it?

Thanks

Replacement Battery for Studio XPS 1640 (2010)?

$

Hello,

I have recently had a pop up letting me know that the battery on my Studio XPS 1640 is approaching the end of its usable life. I have searched the Dell site to find which battery I should purchase for my laptop, but can not find one that is stated to be compatible with the Studio XPS 1640. The closest I found is 312-0383, which is compatible with the 1647. Could somebody point me towards the right battery to purchase?

Thanks!

My touchscreen stopped working entirely after about 3 months.  Also the touch pad is hyper sensitive and screens switches among open programs without prompting.  I've tried all the alleged solutions in other threads and nothing works.  What can I do?

Replacing HDD to SSD

Hi I just recently upgraded my Inspiron 7537 from 1TB HDD to 512GB SSD.

I tried to reinstall Windows using Dell recovery Discs which I created before, but I'm getting error that system cannot be restored as minimum of 997GB space is required.

How I can restore Windows on my computer now?

I want to use my SSD, Operating system which came with the laptop is Windows 8.

Very low SSD performance

I have a Latitude E6420 with Intel i7-2640M CPU, 8GB ram and LiteOn LAT-256M2S SSD installed.

The performance is very slow, sequential R/W performance tested by AS SSD benchmark is only around 100MB/s.

I have enabled AHCI in BIOS and Windows 7 so I wonder it's the issue of firmware.

Could you let me know how to solve this problem or where to get the latest firmware of this SSD?

Thanks

Brian

Inspiron 5537 single beep at POST

Hi, have this problem, laptop is stuck at POST beeping once every 2 seconds (ish). First beep appears louder, following beeps seem to be more quiet, and they go on forever.

Before one of the DELL "technicians" here will sugest removin power accessories and hold the power button for however long, I already tried more than once.

At first, I thought it might be coin battery failure, so I went in shop, bought a 2032, took the laptop apart, replaced the battery, put everything back together and...  it didn't help.

Also how it started is a bit odd. I started to get this beep "problem" about 3 weeks ago, restarted laptop, beep beep etc, switched of, started again, and it came on. Then 2-3 days later, it happened again, this time I had to restart about 5 times, but in the end it kicked in and as soon as I was able to get past POST, everything was OK. Then again, few days later restarted laptop, this time it took some 15-20 restarts to get through the POST, then OK and now I can restart forewer, it just keeps beeping.

So this lead me to believe it's a coin battery issue, thus replaced it but no positive outcome.

Also, when replacing the power button flat-cable, I managed to bend (then straightened again) the left pin on the socket (left/first one if you position the laptop as you normaly use it with the touchpad towards you) - might this be the reason, that the battery-charging-LED-light doesn't iluminate anymore when the AC is plugged in?

Sorry for such a long description, I tried to include as much info as I felt is needed.

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Thank you ;)

Faulty repairs warranty expired

On the 8th of April a technician came to my home to repair my Alienware 17 laptop. The issue was that the laptop at times wouldn't charge,

The repair that took place was under warranty and my motherboard, charger and charging port were replaced.

a few days later, while gaming i noticed insane amounts of heat generated from the laptop located at the charging port, however my warranty was expiring on the 15th and laptops are notorious for generating heat so i left it because i didn't want to be stuck in a position where dell keep coming to my home to make repairs then my warranty runs out and im left with a broken laptop..... Biggest mistake

On the 17th around midnight while gaming, my laptop went up in smoke and shut down, smoke came pouring out of the vent located behind the charging port, the port its self and my keyboard.

I took the back off my laptop to remove my ssd to make sure that it still worked, at which point a chip fell out of the laptop, and i noticed a area of burn damage. upon doing research i believe this area of the motherboard is where the charging port connects.

This tells me that the parts i was sent were faulty (which i already knew due to the heat being generated)

Where do i stand with regards to dell repairing my machine. given that the repairs they done are what lead to my machine facing its ultimate death

XPS 15 won't boot

Hello, Having a problem with my XPS 15. When I tried to boot it up this morning, it wouldn't. When I press the power button, the screen flashes momentarily to the "the computer did not shut down properly" screen, then goes black. At the same time, the disk drive will make the normal sound it makes on startup. It will then repeat these things until I close the lid. I have no idea what's going on - any thoughts would be much appreciated.

How re install Windows 7 on my Dell Latitude D810

$

I have Dell Latitude D810 laptop computer. Originally, When I bought it, it came, as I remember it, with Windows XP. Later (in 2009) I updated it to Windows 7. It has been running so slow lately that I did a re-install of Windows 7 today. The C drive was wiped clean and reformatted before the install. I used an ISO file for the install that contains SP1. The installation seems to have gone fine, but the computer seems to be unaware of any Dell audio. I guess this makes sense because I didn't do anything to install Dell Drivers - I didn't know how.

So, I guess the question is, how do I make this installation of Windows 7 aware of my Dell drivers. I still have the original CD's that came with the computer, and one of them is labeled "Drivers and Utilities Already installed on your computer for re installing Dell Latitude System Software." However, I don't know how to make use of this disk or if the drivers on them are XP related only.

Any help appreciated.

9 months old troubling laptop

Hi there.Im having a problem with my 9 months Inspiron 17 wich is my worst nightmare ever.Since i bought this laptop in late July 2014 it gives my nothing but problems. On the second week of purchase its video card started to crash  and my visiting to Future Shop  became more and more frequent.Almost every week since that my laptop was taken away and "diagnosed" .Every time Future Shop`s Geek returned it to me i got same problems all over again, until February when they send it to the Dell to replace whole motherboard. Now, Im having another problem with that which is about wi-fi adapter. It seems like computer doesnt see any networks available around it.One day it was working for 5 mins and then again turned off wi-fi by itself and stop working.Im having this problem for a week so far and I cant use it.As a student i cant afford to waste 1100 $ I paid like this

My question is that possible to return this absolutely troubling laptop to Dell and get another computer or get my money back the money, because in 2-3 month warranty will end up and I dont want to pay hundreds of bucks to repair that piece of not working machine till the end of my life.

Im thinking about creating a file for Ontario Consumer rights, since that laptop was in bad condition since the first days of the purchase.

P.S Future Shop manager refuses to deal with that and Dell support is absolutely worthless since they have guys with Indian accent who cant do anything except asking me my tag number  all over again for 30-40 minutes.

Latitude e6500 booting problems

Hi all,

My Latitude e6500 has started to fail booting intermittently, now more frequently so it has become pretty unreliable and I love my laptop so I would like to fix it if possible. When I press the power button there will be sounds heard like if the fans and HD want to start, but then it stops and it stays in a situation were the num lock key is blinking, and the caps and scroll lock lights are on. Nothing comes up on the screen during this failed attempts to boot. Sometimes there seems to be an association between this happening more often when the computer turn itself off (sleep) than when I turn it off. The mystery for me is that it does it intermittently so I'm hoping it can be fixed without something serious like needing to change the motherboard.

I'm sure this has come up before in the forum, but I truly spent more than an hour browing around and found other versions of blinking lights, not this. perhaps I didn't use the right keyword? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Regards. Hernan

M2800 Docking Station stops charging during GPU intensive activity

$

Specs:

Corei7-4710MQ
8GB RAM
500GB HDD

Intel HD Graphocs 4600/AMD FirePro W4170M

When I'm doing anything GPU intensive, after a seemingly random period of time, the docking station will stop charging the battery and the CPU will nosedive because speedstep is confused about power state. CPUZ shows the CPU multiplier go from x33 (highest) to x8 (lowest) and the computer basically becomes unusable. The only fix is to reseat the laptop on the docking station, but this is only a temporary fix.

Here's what I've tried thus far:

- Replaced Docking Station
- Upgraded Docking station drivers (and any other relevant drivers)
- Upgraded Video Drivers (AMD - 13.352.1002.0, Intel - 10.18.10.3960)
- There's nothing in the event logs about power state or processor issues when this happens.
- I thought it could possibly be a temperature issue with the leads on the docking station plug (a long shot) but temperature stay within documented working ranges.

Any ideas?

Laptop plugged in not charging(laptop says it is)

Here is the issue: When I plug the computer into the charger it says that it is plugged in and charging but I know it is not. I can watch as the battery charge drops like it is not plugged in. To get it to charge I have to pull on the charge cable so that the plug into the computer is being pulled toward the screen then put something on top of the wire to keep the tension. If the tension releases then the computer stops charging. I have had two repairs done on this computer which replaced the hard drive, the motherboard(for a separate issue), and the battery to fix the charge problem. I was also given a new AC adapter which did not help.

Anyone have any ideas what the issue is before I try to get it repaired again?

Also anyone know if I can get my warranty extended? (I think that they have already replaced the most failure pron parts with new ones)
