I have a dell Vostro 1720 running Windows 7 with an external monitor and mouse connected. How do I keep it from going to sleep when I close the lid? What is the button sequence so I can close the top of the laptop and still have the computer still operate? Every time I close the top the thing goes to sleep????
Hey, with my laptop is something wrong. Bluetooth doesn't work, i have installed wireless+ bluetooth and wireless is working perfectly, but bluetooth dont work. There is Bluetooth icon in bar, but when i click it, trying to send files, or get files i cant find any bluetooth devices. When i try to add devices, not even one devices is showing up, its empty. In driver manager there is Bluetooth radios when i open it, show ups bluetooth drivers i think.. Tryed unnistall and istall it, doest work either. Tryed register to dell.com but i can't some servers problems..

iI was stuck in a repair loop, but I got out of it by pressing F8.
I'm still stuck on startup.
After pressing F8, the screen gave me four options to choose from:
"Press Esc for recovery"
"Press Enter to try again"
"Press F8 for Startup Settings"
and
"Press F9 to use a different operating system"
I've tried the first three options, but they've proven to be helpless,
I pressed F9, causing the laptop to restart, but it only led me to a solid black screen.
Hi I have this vostro3700 with windows 8.1
I've tried numerous drivers for the validity sensor (vfs300 i think)
But whatever driver i install, Digital Persona is unable to scan any fingerprints at all!
As soon as i swipe my finger it pops up "Unsuccessful Fingerprint Scan"
I have also tried Dig-Persona ver 4.01 as well as ver 6.01 but same results.....

We have E7440 with internal Dell Wireless 5570 HPSA+ modem. (3G)
With the Sierra Skylight software that is provided DELL, this works ok.
However, this software does not work with external 4G Aircard 320U. (Telstra 4G).
I can get the 4G card working by installing the Sierra Wireless AirWatcher. But the problem is, with this software, i cant pick up the internal modem.
It seems its one or the other.
Is there a way to get both internal and external devices working with one Sierra software?

I am trying to re-install from my recovery media that came with the Laptop. As my recovery partion on the hard drive is corrupted at least according to Dell Backup and recovery. When it comes the screen after selecting region and language, it is prompting for a key. I found the keys online that are the generic Windows 8.1 core and professional they give an error. See attachment. When using a Windows 8 Pro key, same error and using the one that is found using several programs is saying it is just an upgrade for Windows 8.0. Can someone tell where or how I can retrieve the key so I can re-install from the OEM CD that came with this laptop?

I downloaded the latest version of Intel HD Graphics 4400 Driver for my Inspiron 15 (3537, Mid 2013), but when it tried installing the software, it shows the following error message -
" The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer. Setup will exit."
However, when it checked its compatibility it does reflect my system there. And, yes I downloaded the software from http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=5V482&fileId=3394571394&categoryId=VI&productCode=

I am using Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2 in 1 laptop for last 2 months. It is a nice laptop to use. [:)]
But I have an issue now. It is that the touch screen touches itself automatically on the left side of the screen over top to bottom. It occurs occasionally and it is annoying. I can't control the mouse when it occurs. When I restart the system, it stops.
I can't find any solutions for that. I did calibrate also. It didn't helped.
It touches all over the left portion without gaps. Does anyone knows how to solve this issue ?

Does anyone have a solution to the overly sensitive and erratic behavior of this PC touchpad? The symptom is that trying to TAP to point to a specific item (e.g. a small box requiring check or uncheck, or even to reliably grab a window edge to resize it) often takes multiple attempts. I have not had this problem on other laptops I've tested using this oversized touchpad and also running win 8.1. It seems to be a problem unique to this model. The touchpad driver is from 2010. There's no sensitivity control. I've had no success yet getting this fixed with Dell Tech support.
I recently noticed that I have no sleep indicator on my inspiron 7537. When I close the lid the hard drive activity light turns off properly, but nothing flashes like any other laptop I've ever had or ever seen. Is there some solution or known problem for this?
I would really like to know if the computer is sleep so I can walk away from it and not forget it is in sleep mode.
I got new Dell latitude E6440 with windows 8.1 pro but the Bluetooth is not working I tried every thing (enable the Bluetooth from BIOS ,reinstall the driver) but nothing help.

I am trying to factory restore my 1545 with no result.
I have used the F8 method with no option available to factory restore.
I have used Dell Data safe Local Back-ip method. This does appear to begin to work. However, it says it will be restored to 12/13/11 (factory image) but I purchased the computer prior to that. But then when I continue the process it takes me to windows restore and only shows a restore to a date in Sep 2014.
I have had no problems performing a factory restore on any of my other Dells. This particular model came with Windows Vista installed and a Windows 7 upgrade disk to be delivered later. I did install the windows 7 upgrade about a year after purchase. Wondering if this may have something to do with it.
Any help would be appreciated. My ultimate goal is to factory restore this computer as it works fine and still use this one for many of my needs.

My first post on these forums, so I hope I give all the relevant information.
I have a Latitude D630 running windows XP, Some months ago, the display stopped working on the laptop, its backlight on and if I connect to the external monitor the colours are bright and vibrant that you cannot even read or see any image so I can’t run the LCD built-in self test I have tried some diagnostic steps, and if I power on the computer while holding the 'd' key, I don’t get the flashing screen colours, and if I press FN + F8, the display does not change from external monitor to the LCD panel.
I have disconnect and reconnect the LCD display cable but the screen is blank (white)
As such, I assume this means it is not the screen that is the problem.
Could it be the inverter, or is there another part of the system that needs to be checked?
I've read about some Latitudes having trouble with a video card and having some extended warranty made available, but as I bought the laptop second hand I have no expectation that there is any warranty relevant here.
I'm quite sure that I don't have the latest BIOS update, and I'll try to address that once I get the screen going, But that's not the point of this post.
Any help from the wise people here would be greatly appreciated.

My brand new XPS laptop keeps changing colour continuously both on my laptop screen and extended monitor. I know it's not the monitor as that works fine with another laptop.
Is it a faulty graphics card and I'll need it replaced or can I fix locally by changing some settings?

So my Inspiron is 2 years old this week and the hard drive has failed on diagnostics (SMART Short Self Test Failed WHD16-D3W). I have tried to get support to provide a (free) replacement as 2 years lifetime is unacceptable. 2 Calls to support & they have hung up on me both times....
Giving up on Dell.
Can someone recommend as replacement drive so I can sort it out myself.
