This is the message I see second time since i bought Dell laptop Inspiron 17R. I`m owning this computer just for 2 months and second time I see this error. That error appeared on a screen just couple hours after I got it in Future Shop.I dont remember how,but I fixed that error, and now this happened again. This is my 3rd laptop(used Samsung and HP before) and never ever in my life I faced so many errors and bugs in 1 computer, especially for such a short period of time. How is that possible to see in computer for > 1000$?So, how to fix it so i would not see this message popped up again?

After about an hour of use, web pages and email load very slowly (2-15 mins) or not at all. Videos stop mid-stream, sometimes restart & sometimes not. Wireless mouse does NOT work. Door on bottom of laptop doesn't close.

OS 8.0 has been reinstalled 3 times (by Support and Depot)!  We have gone through at least 30 hrs of phone support, 3 techs to the house, 2 trips to the "Depot" for repair.  Wireless card, LCD & antenna were changed. Laptop sent to Dell Depot, returned without change except the bottom door wouldn't stay shut & it was filthy.

Aug 21 I emailed the form: Dell Support Request: Repeat or Unresolved Incidents.  The reply said my request will be processed within 2-4 business days.  I still have not heard from them.  How can I escalate this or get a replacement/refund?

Inspiron 15 USB Wake Problem

$

I am not able to wake up my new laptop from sleep via USB mouse or keyboard. I would like to be able to do that because I usually keep my laptop lid closed, so the power button is not immediately accessible. I've searched the forums here and found similar issues with other models, and at least with the Inspiron 17R the problem was recently resolved with a BIOS update. I had no issues when using the same USB mouse and keyboard on an old XPS 8000.

Now for the details:

  • Model: Inspiron 15 (3521)
  • BIOS: A06
    • USB Wake Support: Enabled
  • Operating System: Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit
  • Keyboard: Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000
    • Software: Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center
  • Mouse: Logitech Performance Mouse MX
  • Software: Logitech SetPoint
If I go into Device Manager, and look at various devices, I see the following:
  • Human Interface Devices
    • HID-compliant consumer control device - no Power Management tab
    • HID-compliant device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech Unifying USB receiver - no Power Management tab
    • Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Input device - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
  • Keyboards
    • HID Keyboard Device - no Power Management tab
    • Microsoft USB Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 - no Power Management tab
  • Mice and other pointing devices
    • HID-compliant device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Mouse - no Power Management tab
  • Universal Serial Bus controllers
    • Generic USB Hub - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Composite Device - no Power Management tab
    • USB Root Hub - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Root Hub (xHCI) - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out

If I go into an Administrator command prompt, I get the following:

  • powercfg /devicequery wake_armed: NONE
  • powercfg /devicequery wake_programmable: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
  • powercfg /devicequery wake_from_any:
    • Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)
    • Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
    • UMBus Enumerator
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device
    • Logitech Driver Interface
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device (001)
    • ACPI Lid
    • UMBus Enumerator (001)
    • Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
    • Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 1E10
    • UMBus Enumerator (002)
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Mouse
    • Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter
    • Logitech Driver Interface (001)
    • HID-compliant device (009)
    • Remote Desktop USB Hub
    • HID-compliant device (010)
  • powercfg /deviceenablewake "Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device": You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake.
  • powercfg /deviceenablewake "USB Root Hub": You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake.
From what I've been able to find online, I should be able to enable "Allow this device to wake the computer" in the Power Management tab of various devices in Device Manager, especially the USB Root Hub devices, and possibly the Logitech USB and Microsoft keyboard devices. I assume if I can get that enabled, things might work as expected.
Is this a known issue, and can anything be done to resolve it?

New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

$

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

Inspiron N4010 Screen, Possible Hardware Issue

Good morning all!

i am attempting to troubleshoot and repair an N4010 model laptop for family.

Screen will not turn on, but machine still sounds like it boots, runs.

attempt to connect via HDMI and view on TV to determine of LCD was an issue, and it wouldn't connect.  It used to connect perfectly, running games such as Skyrim from PC-to-HDTV.

What problems are prevalent with this model? Could it still be the LCD, even though it won't display externally?  My other guesses would be the hard drive disk, but would the screen necessarily still show anything?  Motherboard? I wouldn't think so, but thought I'd mention as a possibility.

worst case scenario, I'll be salvaging the HDD, but would prefer repairing the machine itself if possible.

thanks for everyone's help, cheers!

Worst Service

This post is for the Dell customer support team and executives. I just had the worst technical support experience with Dell this morning. My phone call was transfer to 5 different department and none of them was able to help me resolve the problem. Each department was making excuse that the problem for the different department and call was transfer over and I have to hold the line. I don't understand nobody in Dell knows the where the problem should go. The last person I spoke with and try to get answer for why I was keep transfer to different department and issue not being resolved, hang up on me. How hard was their technicians to find right department. I have been reaping the problem in a same manner to each technicians. I have been long customer with Dell and I am very upset with this poor service. My name is Chirag Mistry and Dell has my contact information and they can contact me anytime to discuss the poor service.

Can't activate Intel Smart Response acceleration

Hi Everyone.

I have a 2 days old XPS 14 (L421X) with 500GB hard drive + 32GB SSD.

I find out about SSD caching, and I'm trying to activate Intel Smart Response within the pre-installed Intel Rapid Storage app.

But no matter which setting I use (Full capacity, or 18.6GB, Enhanced or maximized mode...) it won't activate.

I always have an error: "An unknown error occurred while an operation was in progress. The operation could not be completed"

I have a Data partition on the SSD (which is around 20GB) that Dell created... but I don't think it can be a problem as the software should erase everything.

It seems that something is accessing the SSD drive and don't allowed the app to do its job.

Does anyone have the same problem or know a workaround ? I've searched a lot on the web and the forum and couldn't get close to an answer.

Thanks in advance for your help

Regards.

Inspiron fails to startup

My Inspiron 15z will no longer start-up. After the message (translated from Dutch) "Prepare for automatic recovery" what I get is a message "There is a problem with the computer and it has to be re-booted. Error data is collected, after which the computer is rebooted". This keeps repeateing. The Inspiron is 16 months old with its original OS.

I have done F12 at reboot and run the diagnostics, with the result that all is OK.

Any ideas what to do next ?

Server and Internet Problem? I don't think so...

So I am finally using my new laptop because my old one from Dell got smashed into pieces (accidents happen...) and I have only been using it for less than 24 hours and already found some problems. My wifi is great, a bit on the slow side but my other laptop and my mother's pc is fast on our wifi. I have nearly full bars on the wifi and I keep getting pages that say Server Not Found.

and sometimes even just a pinkish blank screen

I tried to get support on this online but the laptop cannot even download the system detect so I CAN get one-on-one help.

And even on the Dell's site I get Server Not Found

I am using Firefox and this also happens on Internet Explorer (which is why I downloaded the Firefox yesterday) I keep having to refresh the page and usually it works but one time I had to try 4 times and I cannot download ANYTHING today.

My new laptop is that Inspiron 15 that was on sale a couple weeks ago.

I know it is a new laptop fresh out of the packaging so I know it has some kinks and I need to download drivers and what not but I cannot even access those features on this website because I am unable to download the system detect...

Help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Calling All Dell XPS M1730 Owners & Upgraders

$

My XPS M1730 is about 4-5 years old - depending on when I actually purchased it - and I'm wondering if I can try breathing new life into the system for another 2-3 years.  Based on what I've seen here's what I can do:

  • Max out the RAM
  • Upgrade the video card
  • Upgrade the processor

The biggest concern I have now is processor & video card selection, but I'll comment on memory based on Dell feedback:

  1. Memory: I spoke with Dell a few times this year and each time asked about the maximum RAM, they claim it can support 8GB.  I pointed out to them that the Dell online manual says 4GB, as does the Intel PM965 datasheet, but each time they double checked & assured me that 8GB was supported.
  1. Can anyone confirm whether or not 8GB works in the M1730?
  • Processor: I've got a T7700 so I dove into the Dell online manual to see what my options were.  It says it supports both Core 2 Duo's and 45nm Core 2 Duo's with 800MHz & 1066MHz FSB's and a maximum L2 Cache of 6MB.  However the Intel PM965 datasheet says 800MHz FSB.
  1. Which document prevails?
  2. Any issues with going with a X9100?
  3. Any issues with going with the newer T9900?
  4. Anyone tried a quad? :)
  • Video Card: I've got an 8700M GT and the upgraded cards easily start at $600 and up to nearly $1000 for the 9800M GTX.
  1. Will a 9800M GT be sufficient for Crysis, Star Craft II and similar?
  2. Will there be a noticeable difference between 9800M GT and 9800M GTX?
I'm hoping to call upon the experience of the community to get feedback on these questions above.
The last question is probably the most obvious: Should I even be doing this?
  1. Lets face it, even if I spent $900 on the video card & CPU, I doubt that'll be enough for a suitable replacement gaming laptop.
  2. I'm so disappointed with the M1730 that I won't even consider an Alienware.  I would almost rather spend more money with another company (Falcon Northwest, Digital Storm, Sager Notebooks to name a few) with an untarnished reputation then try my hand with Dell again.
  3. Of course the flip side is that there's such a premium for gaming laptops that I really can't justify the cost anymore since I don't play as much.  I'm more of a casual gamer but I like my games to play at the default resolution (1920x1200) on high settings and run like a hot knife through room temperature butter.
My main goal of this post here is to address the processor and video card questions above.  While I am very much interested in hearing about whether or not upgrading the machine is wise, I just don't want it to be a long drawn-out 8 page discussion!

E4310 Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

hi folks,

i have a E4310 on which i have been stuck in an infinite loop BSOD.

i had set this laptop aside for quite a while (3 years), so i forgot the password. it was on XP when it got set aside. so, a couple of days ago, i inserted the Dell Windows XP reinstallation disk that came along with the laptop. when i started reinstalling, i hit upon the BSOD. i tried redoing it a couple of times, no dice.

then, i took a working Windows 7 Pro 64-bit hdd from another computer that i have and inserted it here into E4310. as soon as the Starting Windows graphic appears, i briefly get the BSOD and the computer reboots and goes into that loop of pretending to try to find the problem and then saying this computer could not be fixed.

i did some research on google, and so far, i have tried memtest86; removing and replacing the same DIMMS; setting RAID to ATA; running Dell's Onboard Diagnostics - none of these have paid dividends. i have a hunch that trying to resintall the OS will not help because i have similar problems with XP and 7.

i have not tried putting fresh DIMMS into the E4310 - i did not want to spend the money unless it was absolutely necessary.

i could try to take a screenshot of BSOD from XP, but not from 7 (because the BSOD screen appears for a fraction of a second). i do not think i can get to any "dump" on the disk because i am not even able to login at this point in time.

can i get some assistance with this problem?

thank you and best regards.

Inspiron N5040 Windows 7 - how to do factory reset?

$

I have tried several methods found on this forum to do a factory reset. When I hit F8 on startup, none of the options listed give me the choice of doing a reset (even after clicking through them all). Accessing "System Restore" once booted only allows me to restore back to the last couple of updates. F12 on startup does not give me the option of booting via CDROM.

Windows 7 was pre-loaded on this machine when purchased and I have no restore disk. Any options left?

I'd like to do a factory reset so I can sell the machine.

Thanks!

I have a Dell Vostro 2520 Laptop .I have a windows 7 with 4 GB RAM. Kindly help in solving the problem.
I get following message "No bootable devices, strike f1 to retry reboot, , f2 to enter setup menu, f5 enter PSA"
In the UEFI Mode, I get this message "internal hard disk drive not found ,to resolve this issue,  try to reseat the drive "
ePSA quick test passes smoothly,  HDD is shown at the BIOS Screen and I can also see its contents in BIOS in the UEFi mode.
I am not able to boot either from USB/DVD. I disabled the Integrated NIC card in BIOS , I used to get message PXE E61 error.

Vostro 3450 USB 3.0 problem

$

I am having the same problem some people detailed here with my USB 3.0 ports. I have a Vostro 3450 (i7) that is about 2 weeks old.

The USB 3.0 ports seem to work when used for 2.0 devices, but do not work for an external USB 3.0 hard disk. One port (right side) recognises the drive, then blinks off 10 seconds later and refuses to recognise it until rebooting. The other port (back) does stay on for a few minutes, then keeps blinking on/off, totally disappearing after a while. I have tried everything suggested:

1. downloaded latest drivers - no change

2. downloaded NEC previous drivers - no change

3. updated settings so power would not go off (both for individual USBs and through the control panel) - no change

I have not called DELL support yet, but judging from the forum, it would not help.  The annoying thing is that I bought DELL as it was almost the only machine with 2 USB 3.0 ports, which cannot be used!

Anyway - has the issue been solved? Anyone has an update on this?

Well, the charger for my Inspiron 7520 lucked out.

When I plug the charger into my laptop, I get an error saying that the AC power adapter type can't be determined. In addition, the battery on my taskbar displays "Plugged in, not charging". Where do I get a replacement?

Dell XPS 15z Latop screen dark shadow problem

Hi, I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop.  I was typing on my laptop today when out of no where, a dark shadow abruptly emerged on the right side of my laptop screen.  At first I thought it was a glare, but when I tilted the screen I realized it looked like something went wrong with either the screen, backlight, etc. I unfortunately can't include a screen shot of the shadow because it doesn't show up that way. However I included a picture I took with my phone that might help explain my problem

.

Any recommendation, advise or help is greatly appreciated :)

Help! Dell Laptop beeps when trying to turn on (black screen)

Help! My Dell Laptop was working fine this morning...I closed the top like I usually do and this afternoon when I went to use it it doesn't turn on.  I pressed the power button, the CD/DVD light goes on and looks like it turns on but then the computer emits 3 beeps, each one with a slight echo...kind of like you hear from a submarine....  I read a couple of posts that says to remove battery and hold down power button for 20 seconds, but that didn't work.  Anyone know what else I can do? All my school work is on here Sad

And my computer is fairly new...only about one year old.
