Replace motherboard question about BIOS

If I replace the motherboard on my XPS 1645 and use the processor from my previous MB, do I have to do a BIOS update with the processor on the new board?

Do I have to reinstall all the drivers?

Rounded screw head and screw size?

I was trying to replace the HDD with SSD for my XPS 15 9530, but got 4 rounded screw heads at the base cover, so I can't remove the base cover now. These are star shape screw head and the metal seems too soft.

Any ideas that I can remove these 4 screws ?

And I need the size of the screws in case that I have to buy new ones to replace these rounded screws.

Inspiron 1545 Laptop, stuck on Starting Windows, but will boot into Safe Mode

Yesterday I installed a program called omnimo and Rainmaker (or something similar) that allowed me to try out what windows 8 looks like. Sort of a test drive for OS's. So, today I logged in using safe mode, and after some painstakingly time consuming patience, I got the rainmaker uninstalled, but could not delete the omnimo download because it was being used, and I couldnt find it in the programs list.

Im willing to reinstall the whole thing, but I have the application, and drivers disk. Are these all that are necessary? This is my roommates computer, and Im very desperate. I ran the system diagnostics test using f12, and this error code came up, two in one, actually

Error Code: 0146, then inside the message had this code:

Dell Inspiron M5010 Motherboard Problems.

This is my first post on a Dell community boards. I have a Dell Inspirion M5010 that I purchased from Bestbuy on November 30, 2010. The laptop is not used that hard, since I have an iPhone and tablet as well, and the laptop is well taken care of (meaning never dropped, no spillage, have a laptop cooling pad to keep it from overheating, ect) so I have done all the right preventive measures. Well about 2 weeks ago, I go to turn it on and I got a black screen and it just beeped at me 7 times. I knew this was not good, usually its a motherboard failure. So I took it to a repair shop to get diagnosed just to make sure that I was right, and I was and it was going to be about a $400.00 repair.

I did some looking online, and on the Dell community boards and it seems I am not the only one with the M5010 model that is having this same exact problem. Their motherboards are fried after just about 2 years! I think that is ridiculous, when we pay about $800.00 for a laptop and it doesn't last 2 years! And of course the warranty is up (go figure).

Anyone else on these threads having the same problem with there Inspirion M5010's motherboard after just 2 years? I just don't think its right that a laptop's motherboard should be fried within 2 years.

My family and I have been loyal Dell customers for years, all of our laptops are Dells and they are all great, except for the one I have (M5010). I bought Dell (and paid more) because I thought that the Dell laptop would be reliable. But I guess that I was dead wrong on that.

inspiron 17 7000 series wifi issues

Bought my laptop on 6/1 and since the first day I have had issues with wifi connection. I have 2 other laptops and a tablet and 2 smartphones and have never had an internet connection problems until I purchased this laptop. The internet connection is slow.. slower than my surface tablet. My connection keeps dropping sporadically. Then I have to go and disconnect from my network and reconnect to store internet connection. I complained to my husband who is not listening since he warned me to not buy Dell. :) I really like the look of this laptop but I think it is ridiculous that I keep losing internet connection every few minutes.. even as I was typing this message.. I have lost connection and had to reset in order to finish the post. I am non-technical.. just wanted a new computer since my last one Acer was dropped and cracked. I had my Acer for 3+ years and never had an issues.. The hubby has a Samsung and he has no issues.. Can one tell me how I can fix this or if I can get my money back? I don't really want to pay the restocking fee to return the laptop back to Best Buy but I also don't want to keep reconnecting to the internet ever 10-20 minutes. Also have been on the phone with Dell support for over 1 hour.. listening to really bad music.. waiting for the hardware department. This is beyond ridiculous.. the amount of time and money that I have lost with this new laptop. Help.. Can someone tell me what has worked??? or is my best bet to return this laptop.

R236961 chipset driver doesn't install

I used the dell site to identify drivers that need updating via the service tag as well as the system detect.  All of them installed with relative ease except for the R236961 chipset driver.  Here is what happens:

  1. I download the driver
  2. I double click the downloaded file and it extracts to c:/dell/drivers/R236961
  3. I navigate to the above location and run the setup.exe
  4. An installer guides me through the install and it finishes and everything looks fine but when I go to the dell site again it still doesn't recognize that the chipset driver is installed

Is this a problem with the auto-detect on the Dell site or am I botching the driver install somehow?  Where would I look to determine if this driver is actually getting installed?

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Flawed mSATA Setup

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. However, Intel clearly documents that you need a partition equal in size to the system memory for Intel Rapid Start to work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fmotherboards%2Fdesktop%2Fsb%2Frapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi1.pdf&ei=m1OHUpzGAdPpkAfE8YGIDg&usg=AFQjCNH7Rh6iQN6hSR0Ry3oBF6kGmxgjaA&sig2=e--yKMT7hoApFUI_7kMyEA This makes sense because what it is doing is writing an image of system memory to the SSD.

Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.

Security Alert for expired certificate popping up all the time (DigiCert for sightspeed.com (DELL Video Chat)

This alert keeps popping up. Annoying. Don't know what to do. Cert for DELL video chat (which I read no longer exists). From DigiCert, exp 3/14, "or is not yet valid". Asking me if I want to install it. This is what comes up at entering sightspeed.com. Do I install this cert? If not, how can I get rid of it popping up?

Thanks for any help

Our Vostro 1510 looks like it's powered up, minus any display.  The power light is on, as well as the CAPS lock light, scroll lock light, and the NUM lock light is flashing.  I can't seem to find anything that explains what that light configuration is telling me.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Touchpad doesn't work when any key is pressed

On my new Alienware 17, whenever I try and use the trackpad while a key is pressed on the keyboard, the trackpad freezes in place. I have tried looking for a setting that this might be to turn it off, to no avail. Considering how negatively this impacts gaming, and with that being the primary use for these laptops, I hope that I am not the only one who this has happened to, and because of that, that someone knows how to fix it.

Latitude DB-9 insertion case clearance problem

$

While trying to use a custom low production run made DB-9 serial cable I found that the flush mounted DB-9 chassis connector on the Latitude has just enough of a gap to allow the shell to be inserted. Unfortunately, unlike mass produced cables with molded bodies, my cable has a two piece removable half-shell case. These are very common, especially in home-made cables. Unfortunately, the sleek case design of the notebook doesn't leave enough clearance for the fingers these shells have that allow them to capture/grab the flat square connector face (with the two holes the securing screws go through). The fingers are perhaps 5 mm wide and are on either side of the connector, one for each connector body half-shell case. These fingers vary in thickness and width on various case designs. I had to remove the shell halves from the DB-9 so I could insert the connector into the notebook and mate with the chassis DB-9. Can't Dell accommodate this real world physical requirement in the future? Why wasn't it accounted for in the past? These have been in wide use for many years as they are considered 'legacy' connectors. I am thankful that Dell realizes that industry still uses these connectors heavily and need to support it for our use. Please correct this in any future designs that support the DB-9 port.

Inspiron 7720 (17R SE) 3D GT 650m Overheating causing shut down

Hello,

I've had my Inspiron 17R SE for a bit less than a year now. Whenever I try playing games, the GPU overheats and the the computer shuts down. I tried different games that are not too demanding such as Mirror's Edge and L.A. Noire on low graphics settings. The idle GPU temperatures are between 45 and 60 Celsius, but they rise within 2 minutes of gameplay to above 90. The fan speed goes up to 3900 rpm and I have a cooling mat.

I reinstalled/updated the video drivers and the BIOS as suggested in other similar forums but that did not help at all. I also cleaned the vents and the fan with compressed air with the same result. I've had this problem since I bought the laptop. When I try running some of Dell's diagnostics for the graphics card, the laptop also overheats and shuts down. It seems many people have the same problem but not one suggests a working solution.

Help!

Hardware/System: GT650m (2GB), Intel i7-3630QM 2400MHz (with speed boost) , 8GB RAM, Windows 8.1, BIOS A16.

Thank you,

Studio 1537 - No power, light flashing

$

My Studio 1537 won't boot up at all. When I plug in the power cord, the light above it comes on for anywhere between half a second and a few seconds, then goes out. The power button does nothing.

The laptop has cracks along the back of the screen, but these have not caused problems with the hardware itself. The laptop was closed one night instead of switching it off, the next morning it was totally unresponsive apart from the power cable light flashing.

I've tried using a different connecting cable, I've tried removing the battery, I've tried unplugging everything and holding down the power button for 60 seconds, nothing seems to be working.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thank you!

Hi guys,

I update to the 8.1 windows version(N VL) and now the camera app and the Dell Webcam Central doesn't work.

I already ran the Dell PC Diagnostics tool and  test the webcam and no errors found, everything passed. The funny thingis that whenI was runningthe test the camera works and display image, so I don't know what is wrong.

Could you please give me some ideas of what to do?

Thanks.

PD. Other thing, how I add a special character using the alt code? I put for example alt+164 or fn+alt+164 and nothing.

It should last longer than 14mo. I don't see where Dell sells them.

Dell Inspiron start up problems

$

Hi, I have a 2 year old Inspiron 1545 that has a serious boot up problem. (Of course right after the warranty is over)

It takes about 15 minutes from power up to full desktop screen, after power up black screen, it sits at the "Welcome"  screen for 12 minutes, then slowly loads the desktop.

After a few more minutes you can click on a desk top program icon (like Internet Explorer), it will take up to 10 minutes for the program to come up, then the program is unresponsive and you have to close it via the "Task Manager".

I have tried to run "CHKDSK" at a command prompt, with no response.

I removed the hard drive and ran it through a USB disk emulator, I then ran a "CHKDSK" as a "G" drive, this worked and found/fixed some problems.

I then Re-installed the drive to the laptop, the problem was the same, it still takes 15 minutes to fully boot up, and then is unresponsive.

Anyone with any ideas?
