I've had the above for a little over a year. I've not needed to use the webcam until now. Any software I try does not detect the camera, including diagnostics.

There is no camera listed in Control panel>Imaging Devices. Nor do I see a camera enable/disable setting in BIOS.

I'm certain my XPS came with a 1.3 megapixel camera. I could be mistaken...Dell drivers doesn't list a camera diver...so possible.

FWIW: Updated to Windows 8.1.

Anyone know what me problem is?

XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

External usb3 drive did not work in Europe but is fine on US power.

I was recently in Spain using a Dell xps 12 ultrabook with its external power supply plugged in.  I have a LaCie  Porsche Design external usb 3 drive that I am using to increase the available storage on the system.  The drive works fine in the US but in Spain it made a loud grinding noise and although the interface was recognized by the Windows 8.1 OS, the drive did not get mounted.  I assumed the drive had failed and did not use it again on the trip.  Now back in the US, the drive is fine both with the power supply attached and when operating with
batteries.  Unfortunately while in Spain I did not try the system operating on batteries but suspect it would have worked in that mode.  LaCie concludes that the problem is not theirs.  I suspect there is something about the power supply or the Dell XPS 12 that is providing incorrect power to the drive.  Is this something that is known already?

Last night my laptop was loading 50% of the sites I was trying to open, saying it couldn't open the rest (youtube homepage was fine, facebook wasn't, for example).

i had it restart, and shut it off manually with the power button since it seemed stuck at a bleu powering down screen (I wasn't notified that it was doing any kind of update BTW).

Today I have tried multiple things to make it work.

first of all I changed Sata operation from AHCI (default) to Smart response Technology, this only resulted in the blue screen with the sad Smiley, so. I changed it back.. nothing happened.

I ran the diagnostics test, and this resulted in a 2000-142 error with 129946 validation code.

this seems to be a faulty hard drive, even though I find it highly unlikely to be damaged, and am convinced it is a software issue.

i also made it load to a backup from a Year ago, just after I bought the laptop, but I haven't noticed a difference,  because every time I try to boot, i can't get past the dell logo with the swirly circle below it.

Dell Inspiron 7000 (7537) random restarts from Ubuntu USB

$

Sorry in advance for this lengthy post but I am trying to include as much information as possible so that it might help others.

Some background:

I purchased this Dell 7537 laptop recently with the intention of installing Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit in a dual boot mode with Windows 8. I know there's a few hoops to jump through in order to succeed, but I've used Ubuntu for several years now and know what to expect.

This is not what this post is about though. It's to compare notes with anyone who may have encountered a particular problem with this laptop in trying to do the same.

I've already taken steps to return my laptop as it's less than 2 weeks old but would happily change it to a replacement if it can be shown that it's only my laptop that has the problem/fault.

If nothing else, it may be useful to others that follow as I've been unable to find anything about this just by Googling.

The Problem:

I intended to just use the Ubuntu startup USB disk for a week or two to satisfy myself that it all worked as expected before committing to an install. It's when I shut the Ubuntu system down that the laptop would randomly restart again within 5 seconds.

This was not a rare occasion but at it's worst, it would do it every second shutdown. I've done a lot of testing to try to solve the problem and will outline that shortly, but I will add that random restarts also occurred with the installed Windows 8, albeit infrequently. I tried all the fixes I found for preventing Windows from doing that, like turning off WOL and restarts due to system problems at shutdown, but still it did it.

What I have done is a LOT of booting and shutdowns of Ubuntu trying to find the problem and have come to the conclusion that it is some kind of electrical interference, particularly on the USB ports at the left. I do have an electronics background so am fairly confident in saying this. It could be that my motherboard has missed out on some vital filtering components during assembly, or it could be a common problem and therefore a shortcoming in design. Either way, it may not be something that would be noticed under normal circumstances but I have no way to tell.

I will also add that this problem only occurs with the AC adapter plugged in and turned on (we use 240V in this country). It does not occur when on battery power alone, or with the adapter in but turned off.

These are the results I obtained:

The worst affected USB port is the one closest to the AC adapter input on the left hand side.

When booting from there with my power adapter on it would restart once every two shutdowns, on average. The port on the right hand side that I tried had zero restarts out of twenty shutdowns and didn't seem to be affected at all!

When I realised this I immediately suspected the power adapter as being “electrically noisy”, but this is only half the story.

I tried another Dell adapter which was exactly the same as mine but a year older. It still caused random restarts but less than half the number of mine.

I tried an even older HP adapter with similar “less than half” results .

So, while the substitute adapters seem electrically quieter than my adapter, I still got random restarts on the left hand side USB ports.

Incidentally, if anyone gets infrequent random restarts with Windows 8 after trying all the “usual” fixes, it could be a “noisy” adapter causing it. I suspect my Win8 wouldn't restart at all if I changed the adapter for a less noisy one. But that's not solving the whole issue for me.

I also tried using a different USB flash drive as a Ubuntu startup disk but got much the same results as before.

Conclusion:

If someone else is able to try this experiment of booting and shutting down a Ubuntu USB startup disk a number of times from the USB port closest to the power adapter, with it plugged in and turned on, it may help others in the future.

I know that I could boot or install Ubuntu from the non-noisy port on the right hand side, but that's not the issue. It's the long term reliability of using the left hand side ports for anything at all. Could data integrity be compromised on occasions, for example? You might not know till it's too late.

Windows Not Opening (Laptop version: Dell inspiron n7110)

Hello my name is Alexa and I have recently encountered some issues with my Dell Inspiron N7110 laptop. My laptop will appear to turn on normally, but instantly I receive a message saying that there is a Windows error and that it has failed to start. It tells me that a recent hardware change may be the issue, which I don't remember changing as of lately. It gives me the options of launching startup repair, or starting Windows normally (both I have tried), but neither of them are capable of opening the log page. When I try the launch startup repair, it seems to be detecting a problem, but then leaves me with a plain blue page that looks like the regular login page but without the login box. I have tried multiple times to open my computer using safe mode, but it leads me back to the failed Windows opening page. The laptop seems to be charging and the screen and keyboard both work, it is just the inability to open Windows that is causing me trouble. I have to admit that multiple times I would shut down my laptop at night and when I would go to open it, I would see that it still said it was shutting down, and I would just hold the power button to turn it off. (Not sure if that would cause any problems, as the computer had not finished shutting off). I also have to admit that it would say not to turn off the computer because it was updating/installing (something along those lines), and I have turned off the computer and it appeared to turn on normally when I would reload it right after. I thought I would mention that because I'm not sure if that played any part in the inability to open Windows.

Please respond asap with the diagnosis of the problem and ways I can fix the laptop on my own.
Thank you,
Alexa

Inspiron 15 3537

Just received the Inspiron 15 3537, Win 7 Pro, yesterday and there is an incessant clicking noise coming from what I assume is the hard drive.  This is for a business and this noise is unacceptable, no one in our office can work with that constant clicking.

We're going to return it if it's not resolved.  Sent an email to Dell tech support so we're just waiting for an answer.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Can't install My Dell and run diagnostic tests

I have had problems since February with this laptop. Basically, after months of downloading Fixits and Troubleshooters from Microsoft and running them, I've narrowed the problem down to Microsoft Office 2010 having some corrupted files. Unfortunately, Dell gave me a refurbished computer when they replaced my damaged Inspiron and I don't have the Office CD.

So, I thought the least I could do is try to see if Dell has any solutions, if they would have have some "key" information that would prove I had a legitimate copy of Office that came installed with this laptop.

But all diagnostic testing and support requires the use of MyDell. If you can't get that to work, there is no workaround. Finally, I got past the step of MyDell being installed but the diagnostic tests just go on and on and on. One was supposed to last 40 minutes and, here it is, 5 hours later and I still see a spinning disk, so to speak. So, I wonder whether MyDell was actually installed correctly.

I can't do anything without Office except to access the internet. I need to get this fixed and there are 14 Office 2010 updates that are waiting to be installed that fail every single day.

Any ideas?

Latitude E5430 - Problems with fan control

$

Hi, I just bought a Latitude E5430 expecting to get some Dell Business notebook Quality. I am using Windows 8 x64 (in UEFI-mode) with BIOS A09 and the latest Drivers available from dell.com.

The issue that I am encountering is that as soon as the fan turns on, it does not turn off for a long time (blowing out cool air), even though there is no high system load (just Internet Explorer opened) and the temperature is below 50C.

Basically, the fan starts at some temperature threshold, cools down the CPU to 38-40C, and even though the running fan does not cause the CPU to cool down more, it keeps running for a long time (10 minutes and counting) (while the CPU temperature constantly stays at 38-40C). :-(

Please forward this issue to the BIOS development department so that they can provide an update which improves fan control.

Everyone also having this issue, please have a look at this post from Dell-Terry B:

What is the recommended driver set for a inspiron N4110?

Greetings, I am planning to format my computer so I search for the required driver for my laptop. I found a large list of drivers that are appropriate for N4110 here (http://ftp.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/inspiron-14r-n4110.html) but I am positive I don't need all of them. I was wondering if someone could help me determine the minimum driver set I need? System summary: OS: Win7 x64 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz Display Device: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Sound Devices: Realtek High Definition Audio ...I ran a dxdiag command but not sure if all data is relevant. Thanks in advance for any piece of information you can share.

M6500 freezes

Three times so far today (and it's only 9:30 in the morning) my brand new M6500 has locked up.  The video is completely frozen (no updates to clock or any other dynamic video).  Keyboard and mouse are unresponsive.  Pressing the power button works only if I hold it down to force a power off.  Despite this, the disk light is still going, indicating some activity.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can figure out the problem?
