Inspiron 17 7000 Series battery discharging to zero overnight, while turned off!

I have a Inspiron 7737 Series 17 Touch running the latest Dell drives and BIOS (A07).

Several times over the past few months I turn on the laptop and it shows the battery is at 1% available charge even though it was at 100% when I shutdown the night before (I shutdown and disconnect the power plug to the AC adapter every night).

I ran the Dell diagnostics and the battery passes without any issues.

In the 'Battery Status' of the Battery Meter app I have 'Enable Dell Intelligent Display' and 'Enable Dell Extended Battery Life' both enabled. Also both 'Desktop Mode' and 'Longevity Mode' are both enabled. My power plan is the default 'balanced' mode.

This has happened with both Windows 8.1 and the recent 8.1.1 update. I am running the 'Classic Start 8' app.

Any ideas?

Help with restoring my laptop

I have a Dell Vostro A860 laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I'm trying to restore it to factory settings, but I'm running into problems.

  1. I want to delete everything off the computer (user accounts, pictures, documents, programs, everything). I don't want to back it up on a disc. I just want everything gone and the computer to be reset to work as if it was first purchased.
  2. I've been researching on how to restore the system and I'm following the steps. I've listed them below:

1. Turn on the computer.

2. As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

3. Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>.

4. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

5. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.

6. Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

7. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

8. Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.

9. Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.

10. When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.

I ran into problems on Step #6. I couldn't find "Dell Factory Image Restore" after selecting the administrator and clicking OK. I've also looked for the System Recovery Manager, but it's not there.

I hope someone will be able to help me fix this problem! Please and thank you! :)

XPS 15 9530 - Resolution settings

Hi Guys,

To all XPS 15 9530 owners, I am currently playing with the resolution settings and text / font size, and I would like to know your settings.

My current settings as follows:

Resolution: 3200 x 1800

Change the size of all items : 150% [Screen Resolution > Make text and other items larger or smaller]

I find it small, but changing to 200% fonts becomes big on other application .

I tried, 2048 x 1152 and it looks blurry ? or its just me ;)

Out of the box, do you know the resolution settings ? I wasn't able to check since I re-image everything with windows 8.1 Pro , as soon as I open the box.

I do hope you guys can share your settings and comments.

Latitude notebooks have RAID0 disabled and locked out and will only allow RAID1... why?

Hello all!

In the US Army, our latest field tough laptops are the Latitude E6430ATGs. Like the old E6410ATGs, the BIOS Intel Option Rom for RAID configuration only allows RAID1.  It will not allow anything else.  Our intent is to enable RAID0 for performance, but no matter how much research we do, there seems to be no answer.  We are using a hard drive in the regular hard drive slot with a caddy adapter and hard drive in the module bay slot.  We press ctrl+I to enter the Intel Option ROM configuration utility to create a RAID array.  It definitely recognizes both drives, but only shows RAID1 as an option.  The controller definitely supports both RAID 0 and 1, so that's not the issue.

This seems to be characteristic with Dell Latitude laptops.  Why did Dell purposefully disable the RAID0 option?  If any Dell engineering folks are reading this, we'd definitely like to have RAID0 as an option to create an array.  We can do it with our HP Elitebook 8560p laptops and our Optiplex 980 desktops easily because the option shows up and is not restricted.

Any suggestions?

Hi there,

I am new to these forums and I hope that you guys will be able to assist me in a problem i have with my sisters dell laptop.

She has the above laptop model mentioned in the subject and when the laptop is turned on the screen is all skew whiff and seems to overlap the same image 3 times or so with patches all over. This happens with and without a hard drive although when booted up to windows when i move the cursor over black patches the images displays but only for a few seconds then goes back to black. I have attached the images below to show you what's going on my end.

I have already tested the display by holding 'D' at start-up and all solid colours displayed so screen is fine.

I have plugged into an external monitor and it shows the same thing so leads me to a hardware fault somewhere.

I have also detached the touch pad to see if that was causing issues as seen on another post but that doest affect it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont really want to purchase a new laptop due to it was alot for her to buy.

Kind Regards

Tim

My inspiron N5050 won't boot. I already tried the static discharge several times.  Its completely dead.  I checked my computer power cord and works just fine.  When I connect to my laptop the battery light won't even come on.  This is the second time it happens, the first time was approximately 2 years ago.  Dell support fixed it.  I was told it had something to do with software being updated and it cause this problem.  Please help anyone!

How to Identify the Hardware installed in your computer to find its driver

$

If you have a custom designed computer or its an old computer or you reinstalled the operating system not from system recovery ( or PCRestore), You might not be able to install the drivers for all the hardware installed on your computer. If you go to device manager it would be listed under other device as Unknown Device.

So after windows installation you could get into trouble if the device driver is not found or can not be installed automatically because that device would stop working. So here are the steps to get that issue fixed.

Option 1

Step 1. Open device manager by typing Devmgmt.msc at run.
Step 2. Right mouse click on the unknown device and select properties.
Step 3. On the device properties window click on the Details tab and select Hardware Ids.

Pic-18(a)

Step 4. Here you only need to note down these two information highlighted in the rectangle shown in the above picture-18(a).So as shown in the picture above note down VEN( Vendor ID) -168C ( as shown in the above picture) and DEV ( Part/Device ID )- 0032 as per the above picture.

Step 5. Go to website http://www.pcidatabase.com/ and then under vendor search Type the Vendor ID as 168C or whatever it shows in your device properties windows for that unknown hardware, and then hit search.

Pic-18(b)

Step 6. Now you will see the result on a different page with the name of the Vendor so Click on the Vendor name as shown in the picture -18(c) and then it will show you the list of all the device available from that vendor.

Pic-18(d)

Step 7. so you will need to find the device with code mentioned in the Hardware Ids as DEV which is 0032 in my case.

Pic-18(e)

Step 8. Now here it clearly shows you the name and model of the device we were looking for with the link to find the driver of this device under Notes so you can probably go to that vendors website to download the driver for that particular Device Model which is installed in yourPC.

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

Dell xps 15 l502x won't turn on

Hi, I was using my Dell XPS 15 l502x when it turned off (didn't shut down just turned off instantly) and now it won't power on. Battery shows full power but i get nothing when pressing the power button and it has now been off for 1 hour. I have tried battery in + AC, battery in alone, no battery + AC and none of it works. When the AC power is connected the charging light does not come on either. No indication as to what the issue is, it wasn't hot, there wasn't a burning smell, had only been on for ten minutes, had a full battery, was AC connected and the AC adaptor is fine (it has the normal blue glowing light). Any help or advice is appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 1545 Wireless Connection not being recognized by Windows 7

I am having trouble with Windows Live Mail, Windows Explorer and Google Chrome recognizing that I have an Internet connection. Upon Start Up the computer quickly recognizes that I have an internet connection by showing the 5 Bar icon on the Task Bar and indicates that the Signal Strength is usually Excellent; however, the three aforementioned programs will only connect sporadically .I've run the Windows Trouble Trouble Shooting Internet Connections and get either Windows can't automatically detect this Network's settings or Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem. When I did have an internet connection I connected with Dell Support and ran both their Wireless Networking Diagnostic program as well as the Overall Diagnostic Program. Passed  both with with flying colours. Have also downloaded and installed the latest Driver for my  Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN Network Adapter which did not make any difference whatsoever. When Windows does recognize that I am connected to the Internet all other programs will also and once connected, the connection is stable with good speed. Very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dell XPS 15z Latop screen dark shadow problem

Hi, I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop.  I was typing on my laptop today when out of no where, a dark shadow abruptly emerged on the right side of my laptop screen.  At first I thought it was a glare, but when I tilted the screen I realized it looked like something went wrong with either the screen, backlight, etc. I unfortunately can't include a screen shot of the shadow because it doesn't show up that way. However I included a picture I took with my phone that might help explain my problem

.

Any recommendation, advise or help is greatly appreciated :)

XPS 15Z L511Z Screen

Started out as a dark spot in the top right corner of the screen. Now whenever I touch the screen or move the laptop the screen almost goes black (screen looks black but when looking at it at an angle it is just really really dim). I have been looking all over the internet for a solution but have yet to find one. Seems like a lot of people are having the same problem. The weird thing is when I connect the laptop to an external monitor the display works and the laptop screen becomes bright again, besides the dull top right corner. LCD display part # is KW90D. Have done a lot of research and I'm ready to buy a new screen but would like some assurance before I buy. Thanks

XPS 9530 External Monitor Signal

Hi, I've got the top-of-the-line XPS 9530. I am using an external display at my office, the U2312, plugged in with an HDMI to DVI cable. Every so often, the monitor seems to lose the signal: the screen goes black for about 2 seconds, then the image comes back. During that time, the power light for the monitor stays on. I have checked the cable, and it is not loose. This first happened with another monitor, using another HDMI cable, so that is not the issue. I also had some other issues with my 9530, so I got a replacement system, and still, same problem. What could be causing this problem?? It is pretty annoying! Any help is much appreciated. Judge

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Flawed mSATA Setup

$

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. However, Intel clearly documents that you need a partition equal in size to the system memory for Intel Rapid Start to work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fmotherboards%2Fdesktop%2Fsb%2Frapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi1.pdf&ei=m1OHUpzGAdPpkAfE8YGIDg&usg=AFQjCNH7Rh6iQN6hSR0Ry3oBF6kGmxgjaA&sig2=e--yKMT7hoApFUI_7kMyEA This makes sense because what it is doing is writing an image of system memory to the SSD.

Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.
