Hello All,

I just received my XPS 15 (9530) and I really love it but the screen is a bit too glossy for my taste. Can anyone recommend a screen protector that will reduce the glare?

Thank you.

E6540 Inadequate Thermal System! ATTN: Dell

Okay, so I have decided to revise this thread to accommodate the recent interest by customers who own this notebook.

Nutshell Explanation: The E6540 and its "one-fan" design is totally inadequate for properly cooling the i7-4800MQ and the AMD HD 8790M. The advertised specifications (2.7Ghz) are unobtainable during realworld and benchmark testing scenarios. The cooling system just can not handle the thermal footprint of the CPU/GPU.

Long Explanation: I have spent a lot of time and effort in researching this problem. Here are a few things I have discovered. First, Dell has a history with producing systems that can't handle the thermal requirements of the chips installed inside of them. One would think that Dell would learn from their mistakes... Second, the Latitude E series is probably an "end of life" model. Dell jumped the gun on the E6540 and failed to do the engineering. They assumed that the E6530 design could accommodate a CPU/GPU combination with a higher TDP than it's predecessor (E6530). Likewise, the E6540 was one of the first enterprise-grade Haswell notebooks. So I'm sure the pressure was really on at Dell to push this out of the door. These machines are inherently flawed. DOA! We have been scammed. For those of you who have upgraded to the 2.8Ghz model. You really got scammed! You will never be able to use that horsepower.

I have been a 15+ year Apple customer. This has been my first PC in a long time. Frankly, I'm very disappointed.

Now. Let me go ahead and leave a few links here that reference other forums/sources that discuss this issue:

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Flawed mSATA Setup

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. However, Intel clearly documents that you need a partition equal in size to the system memory for Intel Rapid Start to work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fmotherboards%2Fdesktop%2Fsb%2Frapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi1.pdf&ei=m1OHUpzGAdPpkAfE8YGIDg&usg=AFQjCNH7Rh6iQN6hSR0Ry3oBF6kGmxgjaA&sig2=e--yKMT7hoApFUI_7kMyEA This makes sense because what it is doing is writing an image of system memory to the SSD.

Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.

Greeting Community,

I have just ordered myself a dell m4700. I didn't choose the backlit keyboard option, but would like to add one.

I can't seem to find any stores selling these keyboards. My questions - Does a dell m4600 keyboard (HG3G3) fit into an m4700?

Thankyou for your time,

Jamie :)

I have the discs to do a reset/re-install so I can ship my laptop to the person who bought it - but I can't find the directions anywhere. I have been searching in support.dell.com but TONS of articles come up and none point to the directions.

If someone could post the URL for the windows reinstall and then the drivers and downloads installation directions I would really appreciate it!!!!!!!

Second HDD for L521x

UEFI boot is amazing, and I just love getting to a desktop in under 10 seconds.

However, this makes the installation of Ubuntu fraught with peril.

Is there a way to image the whole drive in case the installation of Ubuntu screws things up?

Also, should I just install another HDD?

I have sought this forum out, and made the two usernames necessary for it, to ask how I might go about installing a second HDD or SSD on my L521x Dell XPS 15 laptop.

I think I just need to buy a SATA caddy for a 2.5" drive designed to replace a disc drive, and either a 2.5" SATA drive or a 1.8" SATA drive, right?

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=cd+drive+ssd+replacement&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xcd+drive+ssd+replacement+dell+xps&_nkw=cd+drive+ssd+replacement+dell+xps&_sacat=0
Could I buy a 1.8" SATA SSD to fit in this, as well?

Is there anything else I need to do other than buy a caddy, an SSD, and a Torx #5 tool?

Bios

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5521. I just upgraded from win 8.0 to win 8.1 and  registered my laptop with Dell. Then I get a message telling me to upgrade my Bios. I did that and now I can't access the internet through my LAN or wireless.

I have a Centurylink router that is wireless capable. I can access the internet through the Centurylink wireless network but not mine through the the same router.

What would have changed when I updated the Bois to cause me not to be able to access my network?

Can anyone help?

XPS L502X does not turn on

My Dell XPS L502X does not turn on after pressing power button. I have read various responses on this forum and tries all of them. But still no luck.

Recently I have purchased new battery. The battery life is good. All 5 lights. AC adaper has the blue light. Laptop does not turn on with adapter or only battery or both.

2 yr warranty expired 3 months back. Is this the motherboard issue or problem with Power On button?

Thanks

Anil

Inspiron 15 3520 screen goes crazy

My computer from time to time has a problem { but getting worse lately} where the screen goes whitish with gray looking lines, but after a while it stops this for alittle while and then it may do it again once the computer has been sitting. What could cause this? and What do I need to do? Thanks for any information that you can give me. Smile

Once the computer has been put to sleep and then turned back on it fixes the screen discoloring goes way. Another detail is that it doesn't happen everyday, but it is happening more and more.

A Dell Inspiron 3521 with Windows 8 - Having serious Hard drive issues, The Hard drive says it's Not Installed. Please Help!

This Laptop is not mine doesn't belong to me instead belongs to my cousin who is 15 years old. They bought it from Best Buy not even three Months ago.

(But I have current possession of it to "fix it" if I can.)

I set up the whole thing because I am the only one in the family that knows a lick of anything about computers & technology.

Windows 8 is quite interesting, I am more used to Windows Vista as my Laptop is a XPS M1530. And all the Computers & Laptops in the house are Windows 7.

So when my cousin got this Windows 8 Laptop it was something new to figure out for sure. But I got the basics I guess.

He only has had the laptop a few months when he called and told me the Laptop was showing a black screen with white letters.

I basically got the Laptop with it doing the following:

Press the power button

Black screen

The Dell Symbol shows with the F1 & F12 options (But this screen goes away so quickly.)

Black Screen

Checking Media_ [Fail]

Checking Media_

Black Screen

No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine_

(I pressed a random key)

The machine Reboots and basically does a crazy loop on the options I just explained.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I asked my cousin what he did to the Laptop.

This is what My cousin said he did:

Not too sure. The Laptop froze up after a handling mishap where I had gone back when I didn't want to and then two tabs I had opened got separated into two different windows. When I tried to put them back together, the Laptop froze. The screen wasn't moving, so I tried turning it off. When I turned it back on, it had a black screen and after the Dell Symbol there was a list of white letters and at the bottom it says: "No boot device found. Press any key to reboot the machine."

(I had asked if he dropped the Laptop because to me a Handling Mishap, usually means dropping the Laptop! And he Replied back.)

My Cousin:

I didn't drop it. I meant that the Touch Pad decided that I pressed out of the text box before I backspace that went back.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After so many tries it finally allowed me to press Alt & F12 which took me to the screen of Boot Options I believe.

Then I went into Diagnostics.

I ran a Test on every area.

The only Area that had a Warning was the Hard Drive, it had a Warning: Not Installed!

I must have retried that test twenty times. But the result was the same.

I don't understand how the Hard Drive was there & then now all of sudden it's gone (Not-installed).

Unless it's a Glitch.

Or could my cousin be lying to me with what he did?

I am not sure.

I am just wondering if anyone can offer me any help in solving this serious issue, so we don't have to go to Best Buy.

Please & Thank you.

If you need anymore information I can get it for you.

I know that the Inspiron is a non-touch screen, has Windows 8.

Currently we cannot even get passed the looping screen of the Checking Media Fail.

Or we can enter F12- Boot Options or F-1 Set Up I believe it is.

So if anyone can help greatly appreciated & if the best advice is to go to Best Buy the well we will just go there. xD

But if you can help through the Forum here I would appreciate that too.

Please & Thank you all! :>

Fair Well~

My Dell XPS L501X wont turn on

Well first i was watching a film on my laptop last night when suddenly it just randomly turned it self off. I thought at first it just over heated so i left it for about 1hr then tried to turn it back on again but nothing happened.

Then I noticed that the ac adapter i was using didnt have the light which indicates it is on. So i just unpluged it from the mains and then put it back in again. the green light came on then as soon as i put it in the laptop it turned off again. But I know it isnt the ac adapter becasue i used it on another laptop and it works fine.

I have used all the methods of taking out the battery from the laptop and all that but nothing seems to work.

So ive come here to see if anyone can send me something like a link to a webpage or vidoe explaining what i can do and a full on detailed explanation of what i can do.

Strange BOOT problem: XPS 15 L521x 16 GB RAM Windows 7 64 bit

$

Ok so I have a strange problem that has stumped even the Dell repair tech's as of late. My XPS 15 L521x with 16GB RAM running Windows 64 bit OS and fully updated drivers and BIOS has cold boot issues. It will lock up on the Dell logo right before it would normally boot into Windows probably 85% of the time. The other 15% it boots fine, and will always boot normally when coming out of sleep or hibernation. I've run diagnostics, Dell has also, as well as the tech, plus I ran memtest86 to test the RAM all of which passed without a single issue. The motherboard has been replaced and the issue persists still. The only test that gave me some problems was when I tried to run the WINDOWS 7 OS cd to try their start up repair it didn't work and it said "Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk". I've tried the SATA BIOS trick of switching between ATA and INTEL but to no avail. It's a real mystery to me and everyone else who has seen it too. It's just strange that once it's up and running there are no issues, passes all test, never has a single error and wakes up cleanly. It is only on the cold boot and only about 85% of the time. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. DELL is coming out next week to replace the motherboard again (which will be a week old by then) as well as the hard drive which I'd like to avoid. Could it be the RAM, it was originally 6 GB, or a bad SATA cable? But it's passed all the recommended hardware tests over and over and once up and running is just fine. I just can't wrap my head around it.
