Dell Wireless 5570 - problem with linux.

Hi,

im fighting with run this modem (original name MC8805 from Sierra Wireless)  under linux (Ubuntu 12.04), Kernel 3.11.7 with small modification - added ID product ID and vendor ID to the sierra.c driver and now i see the ttyUSB* devices corectly. But.

Modem starts in low power mode (forced by BIOS?) - flag triggered to 1:

at!pcinfo show:

State: LowPowerMode
LPM force flags - W_DISABLE:0, User:0, Temp:0, Volt:0
LPM force flags - BIOS:1, GOBIIM:0, IM_AttachDelay:0
W_DISABLE: 0
Poweroff mode: 0
LPM Persistent: 0

but i have on the same laptop Windows 7 - and when i first boot windows 7 system and do soft reboot and boot linux again the modem works:

State: Online
LPM force flags - W_DISABLE:0, User:0, Temp:0, Volt:0
LPM force flags - BIOS:0, GOBIIM:0, IM_AttachDelay:0
W_DISABLE: 0
Poweroff mode: 0
LPM Persistent: 0

So i think that windows driver sends some command/signal to modem for wake up? What it can be?

When the modem is in LowPowerMode when im trying to mage AT+CFUN=1 gives me error.

My laptop is Dell E7240. I have two latptops with this cards and problem is the same.

I updated the bios for the laptops to A06, problem exists still.

Inspiron n5110 does not shut down

Hi,

My Dell N5110 laptop running windows 7 does not shut down anymore. It just sort of hangs with the Wifi light and the power button light on. I have to press down on the power button to shut it down. This has started happening recently. I have tried downloading and installing the most recent BIOS version, have changed the power options and checked the drivers in device manager to make sure they won't stop the machine from shutting down. Anyone has any ideas on what the problem might be, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Studio XPS 13 Backlight or Inverter Problem?

Have a Studio XPS 13 laptop.

The screen is dark, but you can tell the windows desktop is there if you look real hard.  I connected an external monitor to the laptop and it works fine.

The laptop is out of warranty.  All I have read points to an inverter of backlight issue, but as the repairs can be pricey, how do I test to tell which it is?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I am attempting to install Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop and I am having no luck.  I need to get this done quickly so I really need help.  Each time I attempt the install I get this error:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encounterd an unexpected error.  Windows installation cannot proceed.  To install windows click "OK" to restart the computer and then restart the installation."

Am I missing a driver or something to make this work?  Need help.  Thanks.

Will a 2.5 in USB 2.0 or 3.0 SATA Hard drive HDD case enclosure read my Dell Inspiron 1520 hard drive?

My Dell Inspiron 1520 has just died -- looks like power failure, and I haven't been able to find a replacement battery from Dell for two years, so trying to fix it is out of the question.  I'm hoping to be able to recover my data using an HDD case enclosure. I found the specs from Dell and know my HDD is an SDD SATA, but I don't know if it's 2.5 in.  Can someone confirm that I can use a "2.5 in USB 2.0 or 3.0 SATA Hard drive HDD case enclosure to read this drive... or, of course, not.

Many thanks.

(I tried Tech Support but my warranty has expired)

I have a Dell Precision M6600 (Windows 7 64bit ultimate) that is a couple of months old.

I'm getting sporadic DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE blue screens with identical messages (See debug output below).

I've tried updating BIOS, drivers etc. but the same thing is still happening.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

DVD/CD doesn't work (40 day old Inspiron 15)

We purchased our laptop a little over a month ago. We have tried several times this week to watch DVD s and the laptop is not recognizing them at all. We have been having issues with extremely slow and freezing.  Internet access. The customer service tech ran diagnostics and then reset Explorer to 8. Would that have also effected the DVD/CD burner player?

How can I install Windows 7 Pro on my Windows 8 Inspiron 7720R SE Laptop

$

I have searched these forums for an answer but can't find one.

Surely I am not the only person who is unhappy with Windows 8 and wishes to go back to Windows 7.

I have read on many websites that it is possible to instal Windows 7 on a Windows 8 PC but Dell seem to have made it a No No with their systems.

Can anyone provide an answer and easy to follow instructions as to how I can get rid of the awful Windows 8 and replace it with Windows 7 Pro.

Thank you

Jan

screen turns off and on

Under normal circumstances, when AC adapter is off a thinkPad (it means on battery only), the machine's display will dim slightly according to the power plan set. Conversely, the display will bright up again when the machine hooks up to power with AC adapter.

However, my dell inspiron 5110  screen blacks out and then turns back on when removing main AC power and re-attaching it. Note that this never happens once

I tried checking for video driver updates but nothing is mentioned in the driver note thus I never do the update.

Any advice?

XPS 15 L502x solid orange battery light when plugged in, does not turn on.

Hi all. I have the above laptop. It came with the i5 cpu and I located an upgrade i7 cpu. I installed the cpu and semi-assembled the machine to post test. It posted just fine, so I shut it down removed power and finished assembly. After finishing when you plug it in the battery light is solid orange and does not go out it turns on by itself and shuts right off but the power button does nothing. Battery light stays solid orange when machine is plugged in with no battery inserted. If you use it on battery power the light stays solid still and when you push the power button the machine turns on and the touch lights do their roll cycle and it shuts off right away. I have returned the original cpu, swapped memory, pulled the cmos battery for a full day and drained power, no changes. I have over 15 years of working on computers so please no silly questions. This solid orange light error is not listed anywhere on the internet as a known error so thought I would post this for the experts. I am not going to assume a higher end laptop like this has such a poor MB that it would just die like this. But everything seems to indicate these are poorly made at this rate.

GOOGLE CHROME ISSUES

I downloaded all the available updates recently for my Inspiron 1545 and since then I've been having problems with Google Chrome. Its not really crashing, but when clicking on the tabs with the mouse they close, the Other Bookmarks menu doesn't work with the mouse nor does the Customize and Control menu, however the websites on the Favorites bar do, but they open in a new tab. All these things will work using keystrokes.

I have reinstalled Chrome and it works for a period of time, but eventually ends up in the above described condition. I am now left with the possibility that the Dell updates are causing the problem.

A little help here?

I' having a problem with my display. When I open the display lid at an angle the display works fine but when it is tilted a bit back or forth the display become still with no movement of mouse cursor or response to key presses. Again when moved a bit the display works fine.

I believe it is the problem with my Display Cable.

My system warranty has already expired.

Please let m know how can I order and buy  original parts directly from Dell as I don't want to buy it from a third party.

Whom to contact? and what is the procedure for buying laptop parts directly from Dell.

Dell Latitude D600 - AC Not Charging Battery

$

Since I've now recently been ensnared in this problem of Dell computers which suddenly and inexplicably no longer seem to be capable of charging the laptop battery - although the AC adaptor still appears to be fully functional in terms of powering the laptop, I thought I would attempt to post the definitive thread on this issue, in an attempt to identify a solution.

I have a probably 5+ year old Dell Latitude D600 laptop, purchased used, and running Windows XP Professional without any problems for the past 3-4 years. As an electronics engineer, I have no problem in diagnosing and repairing minor eletrical problems, to include laptop computers.

About 3 days ago during a reboot, I got the message saying that"Warning: An unknown AC power adapter has been detected, > preventing optimal system performance. Strike the F3 key (before the F1> or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.".  Not knowing what to make of that in terms of the implications, I hit F3. Only a day or so later, I noticed that one of my two laptop batteries had drained to zero and appeared to not be charging correctly. I checked my two laptop batteries using the built-in test button, and both showed OK, although one was nearly fully discharged. So, we know the batteries are OK.

In checking the AC adaptor using a voltmeter, I checked the output, and the output was right up to spec with the output right at 19.5V. I examined the laptop AC connector port and it appeared to be both solidly soldered to the motherboard with the connections all clean. Since I know that the AC adaptor has very few moving parts (few = none), and since one of the batteries I have is relatively new, I'm pretty sure the batteries and laptop are not the problem. So, the battery and the AC adaptor upstream all the way to the laptop all appears solid.

I'm somewhat hazy on the internal mechanism in the laptop that detects a battery level discharge and routes power to the battery for charging, while the laptop is in a powered-on or powered-off status - although I will assume it functions somewhat similar to the alternator in a car, and how a car battery is charged. So, something (physical or software) has happened that has thwarted the charging mechanism or sensor. My guess is something physical, since during the time of my problem, no software changes come to mind. That suggests a physical problem. I've read some threads suggestions problems with the motherboard, but I speculate that those are mostly nonsense - since no other problems associated with the motherboard have emerged. My best guess is that there's some problem with the Power Circuit Board, although I can't discount some other sensor failure problem that has caused the battery charging to fail.

This represents the extent of my best sense of the problem. I won't discount all end-users problems that may possibly originate at the battery or AC adaptor level, but I have definitively eliminated those issues as problems on my end (so in proposing answers, don't offer up either of those - or the "motherboard" issue as solutions either). Any other possible suggestions on the way to a possible solution and if this has been as large a problem as what I've read - any input from Dell on a solution? I'll happily accept the fact that nothing lasts forever without breaking, so I'm not sure why I've seen nothing very compelling on this subject from Dell - since there are no shortage of spare parts out on the market and I'm happy to effect my own repair, but I need to know which component has failed so that I can replace it (since I'm simply not going to engage in a "random" repair strategy).

External fingerprint reader recommendations

I have a Precision M4700 laptop. Back when I ordered this, I chose not to go with the integrated fingerprint reader because I'd be primarily using the system while docked and the lid closed. I figured it'd be best to look for an external usb fingerprint reader at a later time.

It's now that time. Anyone have any recommendations or experience with external fingerprint readers on Dell systems running Win8.1? I have the Dell Access software installed, so it'd be nice if the reader was compatible with that.
