Hi,

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Andy

New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

Major Issues & Problems with Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Tablet?

$

0

I had the (refurbished) XPS 12 Convertible for about 10 hours now and I am scared of what I have seen so far and what there is to come.

1.  WiFi connectivity gets lost/broken very often and/or stuck in 'Limited' status (no connectivity).

2. WiFi always is disconnected after closing / opening the lid and often times is unable to get signal back (or takes long time 3-7 minutes) for the signal to return. I have made the appropriate setting adjustment for windows not to cut power to the WiFi Card when in sleep mode, and also set the power settings to Maximum Performance. No luck.  I have installed all of the latest drivers from Dell and, with support, also tried the Intel (more updated) drivers for Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235. No luck. Update to new Bios, still no major improvement. After hours with Dell support, it looks like they will send someone over to replace the WiFi card.

I was hoping that was it and that's the only issue I'd deal with. But wait, there is more:

3. Track pad is odd. I am not doing anything fancy, I just want to use it as a courser and left/right mouse click. Sometimes it is totally unresponsive, you have to move your hand off of it and try again for it to register that you are touching it. Sometimes it ignores left or right mouse clicks as if they never happened.

4. Screen brightness a mind of its own too. I have set the screen to be on Maximum brightness in all conditions (power & battery) and have disabled any dell options, that I can find, for it to manage brightness for me. Yet, half of the time it is at half brightness (thought I set it to maximum) and dims/goes bright on its own as needed. Is there a hidden option/menu for this 'feature'? The only way to get the full-brightness back on is to close the lid and open it again, it starts with full brightness (for a while).

5. The auto-rotate sometimes doesn't register that the screen was flipped . I simply have to move it to another side and back to the position that I want in order for me to get it to rotate correctly (I have not disabled auto rotate). I am scared of what I have seen so far.

Given the above, should I call dell and ask them not to do a WiFi replacement and instead replace the whole ultra-book or is this such a common issue that I will get the same thing again?

I was sooooo looking forward to this 'system' and to get my hands on it. But now, I am not sure. I do love how it feels, looks, how quit it is, and its overall potential but for a system that costs as much as it does, I can't have these issues both in terms of functionality and price. The above is just Day 1, about 10 hours.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dell Extended Battery/Longevity mode (not working)

$

Hello,

I have made a few queries and posts into Dell Ultrabook battery life extension ideas...  Since we are unable to remove the battery casually in standard notebooks, it always remains plugged in..  So that means you only have 2 options to power your system.. Leave the AC Adapter charged in or charge the battery up, then unplug adapter and use till its drained of power...  We all know that leaving the AC Adapter in continuously to power the laptop can degrade the battery over time.. This is a MAJOR setback to ultrabooks in my opinion...

In my other laptops, standard notebooks I would ALWAYS detach the battery underneath so I can use only the AC Adapter as a power source thus extending my battery life..   Especially since there are times where I am using my laptop now for 4 plus hours or more at a time.. Almost on a daily basis...

We atleast have some new features where we can use the options to such as Dell Extended Battery life - such as powering the battery in the range of 50% to 100%... As well as a meter showing the effectiveness of "normal" battery options..

HOWEVER.... After rigorous testing I found that the battery charges fully every single time in the same amount of time!!!  Never does it range between 50 to 80 to 100%  ... every time I plug in the AC adapter, with all extended battery life options checked off.. the battery will charge to 100% each time..

All DELL has to do is come out with software to somehow electronically disconnect the battery as an option to strictly use AC Adapter power.. This day in age I am sure it can be done.. Especially since they already have this software tool to extend the battery life options...

OR... fix Battery Mode and Longevity Mode where its supposed to charge between 50% and 100% and 88% and 100% respectively - yet, instead it charges straight to 100% each time.. I know this because I unchecked/disabled Longevity mode/Battery mode... And it took approx. the same time - give or take to charge the battery to 100% !!

Is anyone else having this same issue?  Or can offer up some additional suggestions to extend battery life in my Dell Inspiron 15z Ultrabook??  IS there any way to disconnect the battery so I can only use the AC Adapter to power the laptop?

THANKS!!

Marc

LCD screen flickers and goes dim when screen is adjusted. Help?

I've had this ongoing problem for several months. For one thing, when I move the screen forward or backward the display flickers. It's not in itself a big deal, but it worries me because my computer is less than 2 years old. The biggest problem is that sometimes when I adjust the screen the display goes so dim that it's almost black. Luckily I can usually squint enough to click a "save" button if I'm working on something important,  but the only way to get the screen lighted again seems to be turning it off & back on again.

Has anyone else heard of this happening? Anyone have ideas on where I might find the problem/how to fix it?

Touch screen is not working properly after Windows 8.1 update in XPS 12.

Hello everybody,

I have gone through all the post posted by community members. I too had a problem with my trackpad where right click doesn't work after Windows 8.1 update but after reinstalling cypress trackpad drivers, it works fine for me.

But the problem now is that, my touch screen does not work properly. I calibrated it several times and also done various restarts but it does not work. If I touch the screen, it displays various cross lines and could not control my display. I have been facing this only after Windows 8.1 update. It is not at all working at al after this update.

Anyone please help me as soon as possible. Its Windows 8.1 bug or my hardware problem?

Answers will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.

Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.

At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.

Can anybody help with this?

XPS 1521x IRST BIOS Option Greyed Out After Windows 8 Reinstall

$

I've got an XPS 1521x Laptop.

What I've done (The quick version)

  1. Update windows 8.0 to 8.1
  2. Have weird graphics issues
  3. Create backup disc
  4. Change BIOS: enable legacy boot, ISRT to AHCI, disable IRST
  5. Format both the mSATA drive and the mechanical storage drive
  6. Fail to install windows 7 to the storage drive
  7. Install windows 7 to the mSATA drive
  8. Windows crashes and is slow
  9. Update BIOS from A10 (I think) to A16
  10. No change
  11. Update BIOS: enable UEFI boot, AHCI to ISRT , and find that IRST is greyed out
  12. Install windows 8 using the recovery disc
  13. Get an error on every windows boot because IRST isn't enabled in BIOS

What I've done (long, boring text version) No hide spoiler / large blob of text? Hmm

It came with Windows 8 and I upgraded (windows prompted me) to windows 8.1. The graphics didn't look right (text in a lot of UI elements, as well as the elements themselves, was bury and didn't have the sharp look that it had in 8.0) so I made a recovery CD and uninstalled windows 8.1.

I don't really like windows 8 so I thought I would install windows 7 instead. I went into bios and enabled legacy boot, disabled IRST and changed SATA Operation to AHCI. I put in my windows 7 Pro installation disc and formatted the hard drive. I kept getting errors when I would install windows to the main mechanical drive so I finally installed windows 7 on the mSATA 32GB card. Windows 7 was slow, and crashed a lot. I looked around a little and thought I'd try updating the BIOS to see if that would fix some of my problems. I updated from A10 (I think) to A16. It didn't fix my problems but it didn't mess anything up either (as far as I know).

I finally got fed up with windows crashing so I went into BIOS and changed the boot back to UEFI and SATA Operation to ISRT but I couldn't re-enable IRST. I used my restore disc to re-install windows 8 but I can't get IRST enabled.

My Question

Why is IRST greyed out in BIOS? I've gone a googlin' but can't find anyone else who isn't able to enable IRST in BIOS.

A picture of BIOS as it is right now

I have an Inspiron 15 with Windows 8.  When I bought this laptop I did a Dell Back up to an external hard drive with no issues.  Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, the Dell Back Up function is no longer available.  The buttons are grayed out.  Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, what is the fix?

Dell Precision M4500 - No Display after sleep or hybernate

The computer will go into hibernation without any problems.

When I power the computer back up, it starts up I see the starting windows screen. That screen goes blank and then nothing happens.

I just updated the BIOS to A15 and that did not work. I have tried uninstalling the video driver and that did not work. I tried installing an older video driver and no luck there.

So not sure what the problem might be.

The video driver I have for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M show version 8.17.12.5922

XPS 12 screen doesnt rotate after upgrading to Windows 8.1+ plus other wobbles

Hello All

I took the plunge and updated to windows 8.1 on my XPS 12 last night, the first problem was the right click options missing from the desktop.
this was remedied by updating the drivers for the cypress touchpad. then I discovered no matter what I did the centrino wireless N 6235 card would not enable. so I removed this from the device manager and re-detected in windows this is currently stable however the Dell Support site recommends updating it, so I have downloaded the driver but when I try to install it I am told this cannot be installed on my system?

more annoying than anything is the auto-rotate function on my flip screen isnt working any more....

Any ideas?

I have a Dell Studio 1737 Laptop needing correct drivers for a "tsstcorp dvd+rw ts-t633a ata device". But the ethernet connection has also failed so at the moment I lack access to the internet. Neither my ethernet or DVD is functional but I do have working USB connections as well as 1394, eSATA, HDMI and a serial port, all of which i think work but have never used before.

How can I determine and  transfer the correct drivers to my laptop ?
