Disk crash on Dell Inspriron

I was *given* a Dell Inspiron, with a crashed disk.

I have no idea which Inspiron it is, but I do have the info from the back of the computer, which is:

Dell Inspiron   OXPCG3
; Windows 7 Home Premium (I do have the Product ID and the Product Key !
;Then two more sets of numbers:
 X16-96072  and 0196-121-699-897

I do have an install disk of Windows 7 Home Premium, and the disk with all the drivers.

Question:  Can I just buy a new Hard drive, install it and then install from the Win 7 Home Premium Disk ?  Then after the installation, just load all the drivers from the driver disk ?

Thanks for the help

Replacing CMOS battery in Dell Latitude D630

Four year old plus a bit computer works wonderfully MOST of the time. I've maxed out the RAM, upgraded the OS to 64-bit, and really, really like the way it handles everything that I need to do on it. One of the suggestions on another list was replacing the CMOS battery BEFORE it starts to fail. The issue seems to be finding it. There is a CR-2032 slot under the keyboard just to the left next to the wireless card (wireless lan - top center of the laptop base under the keyboard). There is NOTHING in it but plastic - no battery, no Mylar strip, and I don't seen where anything else resembling a CMOS could be hiding under the keyboard. I've check YouTube for videos, the Dell Technical Support site (shows changing that CR-2032 battery that isn't there), Dell parts store (nothing), and eBay (something small & round with wires coming out of it - but I don't see any instructions on where to put it in the laptop - just how to pay for it). None of the instructions look like the inside of my laptop, the photos don't show a battery in a black plastic sleeve with wires. There is NOT CR-2032 in place to guide me as to where to put a new battery. What do I do to find a place to put the battery if there is no CMOS battery in place?

Dell Adamo 13 With Windows 7 - How to factory restore OS???

How in the world does one launch factory restore on a Dell Adamo 13 with Windows 7? I have a recovery partition on the hard drive, but have no idea how to launch the factory restore routine. Typically you press F11 at during boot - doesn't work on this machine. I found a procedure that says to press F8 several times during startup (for Windows Vista) but that doesn't seem to work for Windows 7. Can someone point me in the right direction please? The hard drive in my laptop is original and still shows the recovery partition. Thanks!

DELL LATTITUDE D630 WIN XP SP CURSOR MOVED AND OUT OF CONTROL CURSOR / Arrow.

The Cursor on the sreen of the Dell D630 laptop continusuly jumps around by it self, and ( at the same time) the cursor / arrow moves from lower left corner to the upper right of rthe screen on the Windows XP Machine.   In addition, It also had a mashed touch pad button above the palm rest. but I disabled the touch pad, and the same problem existed.

This has caused the Computer to be of little use, and the mouse cannot be controls for 90 % of the Time.

and its only a matter of time that I would toss it in the lake

But, I would like to give this Present to an elderly Relative to use a an internet Search computer.

Where do I start , or How can i Fix this problem?

Msata on 17r se 7720 with hdd and ssd?

So while my laptop is currently away at dell being repaired, I am considering giving it a little spruce up with a backlit keyboard and little bits and bats.

Anyway, I use a ssd as the boot drive and have moved the 1tb hdd to the 2nd bay as storage.

I note my msata bay is empt and am wondering if there is any use in getting a 32gb msata drive...is this possible with my configuration of ssd and hdd and if so, is there going to be any benefit... I am presuming the msata can be used as a kind of cache?

Windows 8.1 and Dell/Alienware networking issues

$

This problem has been around for some time from what I understand. I have upgraded my Alienware M14x R2 from windows 7 to 8.1. The problem is with connection to wifi networks. The connection is intermittent and it's often displayed as 'limited'. I've installed all necessary drivers and followed all networking help topics I could find to no resolve. I'm on a college wifi network and am currently on another device, so it's certainly not a router issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. Move this thread as necessary; I'm not sure if this is the right place and I can't properly access all forums from this device.

Hi I am experiencing a major problem with my insparon laptop. When I press the power button the battery and charging light flash once and the computer makes a clicking noise. I used it yesterday morning and it was working fine, i had no error messages when it was running and it shut down like normal. I tried to use it last night and it just wouldn't turn on.

I cannot get hold of anyone in the technical support team as the woman keeps telling me the office is shut despite the opening hours being 9 - 6 on a saturday.

How can I add a boot option to my Inspiron 17 7000 (7737) system

I've just purchased this laptop as my first Dell and the first thing I wanted to do was run a backup.

I have a bootable USB Pen drive which has my copy of Symantec System Restore which I use to do cold backups and recoveries, this has worked many times on my desktop systems. I plugged this into my Inspiron and it keeps booting to Windows.

After going into the BIOS, under the Boot section - I see a Boot Priority order with "Windows Boot Manager" and my NIC (IP4 and IP6 options).

So how do I get my other devices to be seen so I can boot from them?

Thank You

Mouse buttons loud - design issue or defective? (new Inspiron laptop)

$

Hello all,

I just received my new Inspiron 15 (Model 3521, non touch) and the mouse click sound is loud (unlike any Dell laptop I have ever owned).  It is loud enough that I could not use this computer in a meeting, classroom or other quiet setting without being noticed.  I contacted support and was told by the representative that it sounded like I have a faulty palm rest and that the part should be replaced.  Obviously, I wondered why this machine made it through the quality control process and even shipped to me.  The part is being shipped and an on-site technician will service the machine.

After initiating this service visit, I saw this issue mentioned as a negative in connection with a couple of reviews of the laptop, so I am beginning to think that the machine itself does not have a defect that can be corrected by the technician, but instead  has a design defect.  The sound is a physical sound which occurs even when the computer is turned off.  It sounds like a hollow, cheap plastic click/thunk and occurs when pressing either mouse button.

Anyone have experience with this or similar model and can tell me if this is the "norm"?  If so, I'd just as soon begin the return process and begin shopping for a replacement.  If this is part of the design (why on earth would Dell allow this to be???) I hate to waste time  with on-site repair, only to discover that I have a machine with a design flaw, one which is not acceptable to me, since I will be unable to use my laptop in situations in which I need to use it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I recently tried to upgrade my Alienware M17x to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8.0

Bios: A03

OS: Windows 8

I managed to get it working but the system became very slow, and I tried to reinstall back to the factory setting using the Media Installation that come with the PC, Guess what, It does not work

It doesn't matter all option I have done, messages:

"The Drive where windows is installed is locked, unlock the drive and try again"... I can't find the drive

"The media installation does not contain the drivers required"... well I use the CD/DVD that comes with the computer

Try to log in to the Dell Support Driver, guess what.... "The page you are looking for is not available.

Please help if anyone has encountered the same issue.

Thanks

Erwin

[Vostro 1310] Can't install ANY Microsoft based OS but just Linux

Hi there,

my Vostro 1310 was originally equipped with Vista and I have the Restoration DVD.

I'm an happy Linux user since 2004 but now I need to reinstall Windows to avoid issues with my new job.

I didn't change the hardware configuration of my notebook but when I installed Xubuntu years ago I formatted the entire disk, loosing the recovery/diagnostic partition. My mistake, I know.

Now I tried to put it back Vista but the system hangs after the first loading page. Same thing with a brand new Windows 7 Ultimate.

With an old WinXp OEM the installation starts but hangs on the next reboot. Yes I change to ATA compatibility on BIOS.

I can move the mouse but nothing happen, the countdown to complete the installation is stuck. Obviously I tried with an external DVD and USB too.

Latest XUbuntu install without a glitch and I can use a portable edition of XP too starting from a CD to solve a bit.

If I set the diagnostic screen on BIOS I can see just an error of TPM (No TPM or TPM has problem), but as far as I remember it isn't present on my configuration.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
