Another Inspiron 17R SE Boot Problem

Hi,

My Dell Inspiron 17r SE has major problems booting up once it is turned off, I have been leaving the laptop in sleep mode by closing the lid,
in order to use the laptop, but this is simply not good enough & now since I last shut it down, is no longer booting into Windows.

I have read numerous posts from people with the exact same issue and it seems to me that this laptop has serious boot issues.
When the laptop is booted from a shutdown, I get the usual Dell logo then the screen flashes and remains on a black screen.

I have to force the laptop to power down and attempt powering on several times to try and get it to boot back into Windows 8.
I use my laptop for music production and so have alot of sample libraries & data on my HDD's, I have absolutely no confidence in this laptop
and the number of times I have had to force the laptop to power down, is doing no good to the HDD's and it's really only a matter of time before they fail,
I can already hear clicking noises coming from one of them.

I have updated the BIOS to A15, I have ran pre-boot tests and diagnostics which has given no errors.

There must be a serious issue with this particular model, giving the number of exact same booting issue posts that are related to this laptop.

As already stated I do not have confidence in the laptop at all and want to look at exchanging for a more stable desktop model for my music production.

I have only had the laptop since March and it's a real disappointment.

Any support would be welcome regarding this.

Thanks

Tyler

SD Card Reader, Refurbished Inspiron SE 7520, Windows 7 Home x64

Hello,

I have gone through many help forums for Dell, laptops, and Windows 7, and done much troubleshooting, so this message explains all the steps I have tried. Please read ahead with patience.

I have a refurbished Inspiron SE 7520 with Windows 7 Home x64.

To my knowledge, my SD card reader has never worked.  I first tried to use it after my warranty had expired.

I have Dell Diagnostics installed on my computer and have run multiple PC Checks. The ePSA pre-boot assessment run through all the way through optional hard disk checks had no errors.

From looking at the recommended drives from support, I am surmising that I have a Realtek RTS5179 Card Reader.  After installing the driver suggested by the site, Chipset_Driver_H1VVY_WN_6.2.8400.39034_A03, the card reader still did not work.  (I always shut off my anti-virus program and run the installation program as administrator.) I thought that I had installed the Chipset Driver incorrectly and tried to install it again.  I received a message that the device had not been found.  I tried again, and received the message that a problem occurred installing this update package.  Then I realized that I had downloaded my drivers one by one through a Waterfox browser, and thought that the problem may had been with not fully downloading the packages, and redownloaded them from Internet Explorer.

I ran the Realtek ReaderChecker and received the following message:

ReaderInfo 1.04

Sorry, no Realtek reader is found!

I run this reader checker every so often to see if things have changed.  They have not.

I uninstalled the Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader program. I then changed UAC settings as suggested by another forum in case there was anything blocking full installation of the Realtek drivers. After restarting the computer, I sequentially installed the recommended drivers for the Realtek RTS5179 from the Dell website for my service tag on Internet Explorer, from oldest to newest.  I restarted in between installations, checking to see if the card reader would show up on my device manager or if the computer would show :

  • Card Reader_Realtek_W7_A00_Setup-WWGKW_ZPE (6.1.7601.39019, A00; released 4/27/12)-->installed
  • CardReader_Realtek_W7_X03_A01_Setup-0YP2G_ZPE (6.1.7601.39019, A01; released 8/3/12)-->installed
  • CardReader_Realtek_W7_X04_A02_Setup-K1K32_ZPE (6.2.8400.39034, A02; released 1/14/13)-->installed
  • Chipset_Driver_H1VVY_WN_6.2.8400.39034_A03 (6.2.8400.39034, A03; released 2/19/13)-->has errors (I have a log)

From the Realtek site, I downloaded USB RTS5139/RTS5129/RTS5179 card reader driver for XP/Win7/Win8/Win8.1, V6.2.9200.39052, released 8/21/13. This installation is supposed to delete any old drivers previously installed. The card reader is still not working.

When I use a program to report in text file all the devices I have on my computer, I do not see anything that I can guess is a card reader.

The card reader does not show up as any device in my device manager, even when I view hidden devices.  When I look at the driver details for the different items under "Universal Serial USB Controllers," I do not find any drivers in this category authored by RealTek.

  • 2 Generic USB Hubs
  • Intel® 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1E26
  • Intel® 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller-1E2D
  • Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
  • Intel® USB 3.0 Root Hub
  • USB Composite Device
  • 2 USB Root Hubs

I even looked at the properties information for all items under "Disk drives," "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers," "Other devices" (hidden). As far as I can tell, the only Realtek items I have in my device manager with Realtek drivers are a network adapter, Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, and a Bluetooth Radio CSR Bluetooth Chip.

Is there an .inf file for this hardware so I may try to add it as "legacy hardware?"

Has there been a misidentification of the type of card reader built-in my laptop at the Dell support site?

Thank you for anyone who has read this whole message. I wanted to pose my problem to the forum before purchasing an external card reader. I believe that replacing the internal card reader requires unscrewing too many parts of the laptop for me to feel comfortable doing so, and I do not know where I would find a replacement part.

I wanted to take advantage of the card reader's ability to format SD cards as I am improving the capacity of Androids I use (rooted).

Thank you,

Boukman

I have a dell inspiron 1525, it gets so hot it keeps shutting off every 5 mins.

I can use my laptop for a few hours with the 2 fan cooling pad before it starts to get warm, but it doesn't shut off. When i play some games on face book or watch videos from utube or anywhere it so hot it shuts off real fast.  The only way i can play the games or watch videos is to have the cooling pad and a standing 20in metal fan 6 feet away from the laptop and it never gets hot or shuts off, but the fan is loud and annoying lol.

Never been to this forum nor am i sure i'm in the right place but if anyone can help me please i would very much appreciate it. Just so you know, i know nothing about laptops and especially when it comes to the specs and all that, i'm so bad with those things when i 1st got my laptop i was typing  at in the browser instead of @ and after 2 hours of  trying to figure why i couldn't get on the internet i called and had a funny laugh with my cable provider lol so please any explanations you can give please do it in laymen's terms lol.

I'm just looking for a good laptop around $400 to $600, the cheaper the better though, all i need it for is emails, all types of sports sites like CBS and ESPN and so on for fantasy sports but mainly for online gaming like Frontierville on facebook and a few other games. Thanks for any help and sorry for being long winded here Big Smile

Hi, I recently bought the XPS 12 from Dell less than a week ago. However, ever since I bought it, I noticed that the fan gets very noisy. I bought this laptop for school use. However, the fan gets so loud that I cannot even use it in school. Also, I am having problems with the touch pad scrolling. Whenever I'm scrolling down, sometimes the page will suddenly scroll to the top. Please help, the two problems are starting to bother me a lot.

Inspiron 8500 boot problem

I had upgraded to WIN XP Pro on this machine, but I want to get rid of the machine and keep my XP Pro, so I wanted to reload the original WIN XP Home.

I was not able to get to the boot menu on start-up (the Dell start-up screen would not come up, I assumed it was hidden by the boot menu), so I attempted to get into the boot menu by pressing F12, F2, Delete, you name it, during boot, but it would just not come up - and would boot to the WIN XP Pro window.  I tried to put the Win XP Home boot disc into the CD Rom, but it would not boot to the CD either.

SO, I tried to begin the reload while in Win XP Pro, and it started the reload after indicating to me that Home could not upgrade Pro, I told it to continue - it was going to restart for the formatting of the disc, and not it won't boot at all - it just hangs, and freezes solid to a black screen.

Anyone know what I can do to boot to the boot menu?  Is there any way to make a hardware clear (by jumper or some such) of the ram memory so that I can get into the ram and change the boot sequence or something?

Thanks in advance...

Need help with broken screen on Dell Laptop

So my wife decided to step on her new Dell P17E001 Laptop this evening, on accident of course :-) When the laptop is on, the screen is unreadable and you can see the damage done inside the screen with a black blob in the bottom right corner. She's only had it about 5 months and we don't have a protection plan on it. Is there a cheap way to get this fixed, such as a replacement screen?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dell Inspiron 7000 (7537) random restarts from Ubuntu USB

$

Sorry in advance for this lengthy post but I am trying to include as much information as possible so that it might help others.

Some background:

I purchased this Dell 7537 laptop recently with the intention of installing Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit in a dual boot mode with Windows 8. I know there's a few hoops to jump through in order to succeed, but I've used Ubuntu for several years now and know what to expect. This is not what this post is about though. It's to compare notes with anyone who may have encountered a particular problem with this laptop in trying to do the same. I've already taken steps to return my laptop as it's less than 2 weeks old but would happily change it to a replacement if it can be shown that it's only my laptop that has the problem/fault. If nothing else, it may be useful to others that follow as I've been unable to find anything about this just by Googling.

The Problem:

I intended to just use the Ubuntu startup USB disk for a week or two to satisfy myself that it all worked as expected before committing to an install. It's when I shut the Ubuntu system down that the laptop would randomly restart again within 5 seconds.

This was not a rare occasion but at it's worst, it would do it every second shutdown. I've done a lot of testing to try to solve the problem and will outline that shortly, but I will add that random restarts also occurred with the installed Windows 8, albeit infrequently. I tried all the fixes I found for preventing Windows from doing that, like turning off WOL and restarts due to system problems at shutdown, but still it did it.

What I have done is a LOT of booting and shutdowns of Ubuntu trying to find the problem and have come to the conclusion that it is some kind of electrical interference, particularly on the USB ports at the left. I do have an electronics background so am fairly confident in saying this. It could be that my motherboard has missed out on some vital filtering components during assembly, or it could be a common problem and therefore a shortcoming in design. Either way, it may not be something that would be noticed under normal circumstances but I have no way to tell.

I will also add that this problem only occurs with the AC adapter plugged in and turned on (we use 240V in this country). It does not occur when on battery power alone, or with the adapter in but turned off.

These are the results I obtained:

The worst affected USB port is the one closest to the AC adapter input on the left hand side.

When booting from there with my power adapter on it would restart once every two shutdowns, on average. The port on the right hand side that I tried had zero restarts out of twenty shutdowns and didn't seem to be affected at all!

When I realised this I immediately suspected the power adapter as being “electrically noisy”, but this is only half the story.

I tried another Dell adapter which was exactly the same as mine but a year older. It still caused random restarts but less than half the number of mine.

I tried an even older HP adapter with similar “less than half” results .

So, while the substitute adapters seem electrically quieter than my adapter, I still got random restarts on the left hand side USB ports.

Incidentally, if anyone gets infrequent random restarts with Windows 8 after trying all the “usual” fixes, it could be a “noisy” adapter causing it. I suspect my Win8 wouldn't restart at all if I changed the adapter for a less noisy one. But that's not solving the whole issue for me.

I also tried using a different USB flash drive as a Ubuntu startup disk but got much the same results as before.

Conclusion:

If someone else is able to try this experiment of booting and shutting down a Ubuntu USB startup disk a number of times from the USB port closest to the power adapter, with it plugged in and turned on, it may help others in the future.

I know that I could boot or install Ubuntu from the non-noisy port on the right hand side, but that's not the issue. It's the long term reliability of using the left hand side ports for anything at all. Could data integrity be compromised on occasions, for example? You might not know till it's too late.

Dell XPS 12 Charger Issue

Hi,

Lately I've been experiencing an issue with my laptop charger.

When my laptop is turned on watching a video and I start charging it, it will most likely say "plugged in, not charging" and give me a message about getting a Dell 45W charger (I am using the official charger that came with the laptop). If I am not using it intensively it will probably charge, but I noticed that it still get pretty hot around the socket on the laptop. When I charge it while it is turned off it works fine.

The times when it does not want to charge are getting progressively more infuriating as they are a major inconvenience.

Does anyone know why its started heating up so much when getting charged lately? Is something faulty?

Thanks

How do those orange icons on the function keys work?

Just need info on how those orange icons on the functions keys (below the function key number in white) work. But another question would be where do I find info like this when I've downloaded and gone through all of the Dell manuals for my XPS L702X, or where is a better place to look for a question like this? Did I miss something in the manuals? Most everyone else has a problem with their laptop in some form, and here I am in the Hardware section, lost in finding simple answers. Thank you all for any help on this. I know several of the icons I've used are for volume control or mute, and turning my laptop WiFi on or off, but how do the others work? In this information age, I guess there's just too much of it for me to wade through!

This model is advertised to come with Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 2x2 B wireless adapter. I have upgraded the OS to Windows 8.1 and have the latest driver (16.6.0.8). However, I cannot see any 5GHz wifi networks. Does this adapter support 5GHz (I thought it did given the description from Intel) but wanted to check here first.
