Lets see if this thread can stay on-topic..... I will try to give enough details to avoid having someone stamp it all over with "ILLEGAL"
I KNOW that people have installed Vista on the D610, AND had it work successfully. Not speedy, but whatever. Even if I get it to work, I may hate it, but I am not the one who has to use it.
The driver non-support mentioned by some has apparently not been an issue, presumably because drivers for most necessary things will work on the 610.
Again, I KNOW that it has worked. THAT IS NOT A QUESTION.
The problem is why it does not work in this case.
So, trying to install it off a STORE BOUGHT COPY of Vista was not successful, it didn't complete.
Also, trying AS AN EXPERIMENT to install it from a Dell disk for the most similar computer I have that was sold with Vista also did not complete. I had assumed that the store bought was bad, but since this computer is the only one it was ever tried with, AND the other disk didn't work either, that may not be true.
Yes the drive is perfectly fine.
The error it comes up with is that the computer is not ACPI compatible. I am instructed to upgrade the bios.
The bios is the latest available.
The bios also does not have ANY settings that appear to be ACPI related.
The standard things that are mentioned about hitting F7 etc, etc, do not seem to apply, yet they are specifically returned in searches related to D610 and vista. It seems to be a problem of "not holding the mouth right" when doing this install.
Any suggestions on how to access the bios or other settings that are needed to be changed to do this?
The fall-back is to stay at XP set to file icons (not list/details) , and the most "Playskool primary color large icon" settings to make it look close to Vista. But the user will have then both a Vista desktop, and an XP laptop, and may become somewhat confused.
