Vostro 5468 TPM (Trusted Platform Module)

$

Hi All,

Has anyone else experienced issues with the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) on the Vostro 5468?

It was working fine when I first configured the laptop around a fortnight ago. In the last few days, the laptop kept prompting for the full Bitlocker Recovery Key instead of just the PIN. After further investigation, it appears that TPM is missing from the BIOS and the entry in the Device Manager is hidden with "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)" error.

I have just updated to BIOS 1.1.1 in an attempt to resolve the issue, but this has had no affect. I have also reset the BIOS back to factory settings.

I have found other posts with members experiencing similar issues but on Lattitude's back in 2016.

Thanks in advance for any replies, Stuart

Make my touchpad more responsive

Dear Dell Support Forum,

I'm very disappointed with Dell TouchPad behavior on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, on my Dell Latitude E6430 and I'm sure all this is caused by the Windows touchpad driver, because on Linux it feels like I have a completely different touchpad.

The most annoying part is scrolling which now I would like to fix with your help. On Linux scrolling works just as it should, I put two of my fingers on the touchpad surface, pull them downwards and the scrolling takes place immediately.

On Windows 7 there is a 200-300 millisecond (or even half a second) delay, then a black scrolling cursor shows up and then it starts scrolling. Two things I don't need. The delay and the cursors. They give me an unprofessional and annoying experience.

On Linux my Alps Touchpad is handled by the open-source Synaptics driver for Xorg (xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package on Debian Jessie). This driver has support for Alps touchpads even they're not manufactured by Synaptics. So it's not really the hardware itself what counts, it's the driver.

Personally I dislike the configuration interface of Dell Touchpad. It's marketingish, too fancy and gives very few configuration options, not to mention fine tuning. As far as I have seen, the Alps driver that comes along with driver package called 'Dell Touchpad' will add a lot of registry fields and values.

These registry options might make it available for me to fine tune the settings for the Alps driver.

I would like to ask for a documentation / manual about the registry options under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Alps.

Best,
Pal Tamas Acs

I have an inspiron 7457 running windows 10, this morning it ran an update on closing down and since I have not been able to boot up, instead it stopped on a blue screen page RECOVERY, saying "Your PC needs to be repaired. The Boot Configuration Data file dosen't contain valid information for an operating system." Error message is File:\BCD 0xc0000098. I don't have any recovery disks and need the laptop for my disabled son. Could anyone help me with this issue? Thanks

Dell XPS 15 (9550) Screen Issues

I've recently been having serious screen issues with the Dell XPS 15 (9550). It may be related to a recent bios update as these issues only started after the most recent bios update.

There seems to be a driver compatibility issue with Dell PremierColor / Geforce 960m drivers / Intel display adapter drivers. I've tried various Geforce driver versions from the latest to mid 2016 to no success, so I think the new bios update has an interaction with Dell PremierColor causing the issue. I cannot open Dell PremierColor at all, and just trying to open it causes some serious screen issues.

Has anyone else recently experienced the issue? The screen flickers wildly, goes black, comes back on with different color profiles and brightness. I can maybe make use the computer for 30mins at a time before I get a blue screen of death.

Essentially these issues have rendered the laptop useless.

Stupid Question. Can an Dell E-Port USB 3.0 Docking Station Replicator PR03X run on wifi or does it need Ethernet cable?  basically what I am asking is when you dock a laptop to a docking station can it run on wifi? Or does it have to run on Ethernet cable to get internet access  ?

Thanks!

Dell 15R 5521 battery problem

Hi all,

i have a strange problem with my laptop battery. I can use laptop on battery with no problem, and disacharge it, it hold charge for about 1h30min on normal use, and when i plug in charger it charges it to about 81% then it starts to turn charging on and off, on and off. It charges it that way to about 89-90% then continue to do it, on and off, but wont charge it more. It's doing same thing, if laptop is turned on or off, it's same. When im using laptop, and that start to happen, laptop is switching between ac and battery power. When it show that it is charging then its on AC power, when it stops charging its on battery power. If i remove battery, and use only AC, it's working fine, so it's not charger problem, and it's charging from 5% (or whatever %) to 81% just fine, but after that percentage it starts to make problems.

Is anything wrong with charging circuit, or something else, or it's just safety feature, because my battery is more than 3 years old, and im using laptop a lot? Also it's showing me that battery life is about 50% of original capacity.

Dell Latitude "plugged in, not charging" and blinking orange battery symbol on Windows 10

I have a Dell Latitude that was working fine until recently when all of a sudden the battery light started blinking orange and the battery would no longer charge. It says it's "plugged in, not charging"  and I've tried to shut down-disconnect the adapter-remove battery-reconnect the charger-turn on-uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery-shut down-insert battery-turn on, but nothing has worked so far. Also, when I turn on the laptop, it turns on and off a couple of times before starting fully.

I tried to use a different battery, which shows a white light but still doesn't charge. Not sure what happened since it was working fine before.

XPS9560 Bios 1.2.4 bricking systems

$

Just a heads up I updated the BIOS and the system hung on the BIOS screen, pressing F12 or F2 resulted in the blue bar but the system didn't progress to BIOS of the boot selection screen, caps lock was responsive.

The system seemed to be soft bricked.

The way out for me and the only other person I know to update was to hold the fn key when powering up, this forced a system reboot again and it went back to windows.

As the soft brick can be reproduced by the 2nd person to update I suggest Dell pull this update and people don't update as this may render the system unusable.

Inspiron 13" 3578 - CPU temps & extreme fan noise

Hi,

Dell Inspiron 13" 3578 (Kabylake i5 7200u, 8gb 2133, 256gb ssd, 1080p touch, Win 10 x64 latest).

I've read a bit about this problem which seems to be somewhat common, most threads I've found suggested the latest bios updates - have done that, no change.

The problem persists with any medium to heavy load on the cpu, ram, disk or network. Idle temps are fine, 40-45c with cstates dropping the freq to around 400-500mhz. Any medium-heavy load and the cores shoot up to just under 3.1ghz and temps fluctuate between 75-95c with the fan going crazy - not good.

Some examples of medium load which cause problems, torrenting files, installing games via steam, running certain web dev tasks such as gulp/node etc.

Some examples of heavy load which cause problems, VS2017 C#/.net web dev environment, multi-tasking with 3-4 chrome tabs, downloading, running several dev environments, adobe photoshop, playing any game (even old, very low-load ones) & installing w10 updates.

I've opened up the laptop and checked for dust, loose screws etc. All seems fine. I've checked the BIOS and nothing seems out of place, I've reset BIOS to defaults and then made certain trial-and-error changes hoping to pinpoint the issue, no luck.

My old (not very old) HP laptop with a skylake 6200u, 8gb 1600 & 128gb ssd handles the same workloads while maintaing a 65c peak on the cpu cores and very quiet fan noise. I probably wouldn't have been so surprised and dissappointed with the performance of my Dell had I experienced the HP before-hand.

I'd really rather not have to go through an RMA process with the laptop if I don't have to, they can take weeks. Are there any other software fixes people know of? Are there any hardware tips I could try such as re-applying thermal pads/compound on the CPU?

For UK guys and girls out there - do you recommend taking it to a shop/repair place? I could potentially return it to eBay where I bought it, but again this process could take a while.

Had a look at the Dell diagnostics software, both the normal and stress test passed despite the CPU peaking at 92c and the fan sounding like a jet engine.  While in the software I noticed the laptop has warranty - is it worth pursuing this route?

Happy to provide pics of the insides if anyone thinks it will help :)

Please, if you have any advice drop me a line.

Cheers!

Keyboard is not working in BIOS

I have a Dell Inspiron 3521 laptop. I can access the BIOS using F2 during boot. But inside BIOS I can't change any setting as the keyboard doesn't seem to type. The CPU fan seems to rotate fast inside BIOS. Tried to upgrade BIOS but it tells me to plug both AC adapter and battery and the laptop doesn't switch on with the battery plugged. I use it with direct current only. Please help.

Gaming 15 Corners

$

I recently bought an Inspiron Gaming 15 laptop.  I mostly like it but there is one big issue...the front corners are super sharp for no reason.  I wouldn't have bought it if I knew this; Best Buy had it on a low table with no chair so when typing my wrists came nowhere close to the sharp edges.  Since I've been using it, my wrists have gotten torn up about every time I touch the keyboard.

Is there some kind of padded skin for this laptop?  If not, is it safe to take a file or some sand paper to the corners to make this thing usable without a USB keyboard?

Thanks.

Hello there,

I've read the admin guide for DCU and I'm trying to configure OSD task sequence to update the computer when we install the OS.

However, it keeps failing with this error message:

CLI: Error: Check for updates ended. (System Scan Failed)

So when shall I install and update the drivers with DCU during OSD task sequence?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

XPS 15 9560 FHD 3-cell and 65Watt power supply.

Hello,

I would like to have lighter travel configuration for my XPS 15 9560 i7 with FHD screen and 56Wh battery.
I am wondering whether someone tested or used it with Dell 65W power supply , say HA65NM130?

I understand that the original 130W supply covers all possible XPS 15 configuretions but FHD screen and smaller battery should have lower power requirements.

Fpr example, my previous laptop was ASUS with 54Wh battery and QHD screen and came with 65W supply.

Screen Resolution on Dell New XPS 15 9560

$

I just purchased a new Dell XPS15 9560.  The screen resolution is set to the recommended (highest) level.  However, with many applications (such as Adobe Acrobat reader) the screen resolution is suboptimal, appearing darker and slightly fuzzy.  If I print something from one of these programs, the printed document is also fuzzy.  Likewise, the on screen dialog box from my Canon scanner is also very fuzzy.  This is very annoying, especially since I paid a lot of money  for this high resolution screen.  Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
