Is my Dell Inspiron M531R-5535 an UEFI based machine ?

Is my Dell Inspiron M531R-5535 an UEFI based machine ?
Is its hard-disk in GPT format ?
It is per-installed with Windows 8.1.
Dual boot with Centos 7.3 and it won't boot Windows any more due to
faulty installation of Grub2 and bootloader which  need  re-installation.
Want to identify this machine as UEFI with GPT ?
Is ESP mounted directly at /boot ?

thanks,

Kam

dell 1520R with preinstalled 1 TB spinning disk and M2 32 GB-replace Spinning disk with 1 TB SSD?

The M2 and spinning disk are configured as a single Drive "C."  If I clone the original drive C to the new SSD, will it correctly substitute for the spinning disk, with the M2 SSD still in palce? I am concerned by how the 32 GB M2 SSD will interact with the new 1 TB SSD as it relates to the software installation-cloning.

Thanks to any that might help clarify this question.

Dell Logo Screen Resolution Problem - Inspiron 5447

I have an Inspiron 5447 since October 2014. I had no problems with my laptop since then. Yesterday, I decided to change my HDD with a Samsung Evo 850 GB SSD. The installation went great and everything works. I ran the diagnostic tests afterwards and no problems were detected. Though, the Dell Logo splash screen of the BIOS changed. The logo is bigger and with lower resolution than the previous one. How can I change back to the old, smaller and with better resolution logo? I know it is really not a problem, but it bothers me, so I want to fix it!!!!

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

Just after placing my order (I'm moving from a Macbook Pro to Dell for the first time keeping fingers crossed) I read about the 'coil whine' issue potentially affecting also the latest 9360 w/i7 KL. Has the announced by Dell in this forum motherboard fix by January 2017 been implemented?

Thanks a lot...

Latitude 7370 wifi/ethernet issues

We have one user using a Latitude 7370 plugged into a docking station.  For the past week or two this user's laptop will (while connected to the docking station) will switch between wifi & ethernet changing icons searching for networks.  This laptop has Windows 7 Enterprise sp1 64 bit.

I installed the Intel 8260 dual band wifi drivers and I turned on Adapter switching.  It seems to work properly for a couple hours but then starts switching.  Yesterday I noticed in the networking properties there were 7 Lan connections "Lan Connection 1, Lan Connection 2-7" which I have to try and remove so there is just one wifi connection and one ethernet connection.  Is it an issue with the docking station?

One other question.  We have the power cord going from a power strip to the laptop.  There is a also a usb c connection going from the docking station to the laptop.  Is this connection providing power?

UAC bypass programs won't run on XPS13

I have a Dell XPS13 laptop that won't allow UAC bypass programs like UACPASS and WINAERO Elevated Shortcut to work. Both program run fine on a desktop and another laptop. Both programs will open on all computers. I am admin on all computers. UAC is set the same on all computers - almost always notify. All computers are running W10 Pro. It was a clean install on this laptop. It did not work with the original Home edition either. I can create a bypass task manually. UACpass simply gives me an error tone with no explanation and Winaero won't display the form on the Elevated Shortcut window. All systems are running on SSD's. The Dell is GPT, the others are MBR.
What else is there??? - These programs won't work for standard users so maybe they are not seeing me as an admin user, BUT WHY?? I am the ONLY user.

Latitude 5414 Fingerprint reader problem

Hi There!

I have a fairly big problem with the integrated fingerprint reader in my 5414 rugged laptop.

It was not working first, because the Broadcom FMA program said the syde-by-side configuration is wrong.

Then I updated the ControlVault driver and that's where all my problem began.

I downloaded the version 4.5.17.305 of the ControlVault driver package. I installed it and I saw it was updated the firmware of the fingerprint reader. But, the main problem was that it's removed the Broadcom FMA application, and then I had no any fingerprint application on my laptop.

I tried to reinstall the originally installed 4.2.9.52 version of the ControlVault package, with the Broadcom FMA application included, but after that, the fingerprint reader did not recognized by Windows and the installed drivers was not okay. I tried to flash back the old firmware, but the firmware updater program fails all the time. I tried to install the middle version of the ControlVault package, the 4.4.28.187, but nothing changed.

I copied the Broadcom FMA application to another location, before I installed the newest package and I can start it, enroll my fingerprints, but when the aplication should save my data, it says "The biometric unit is not in the correct state to perform the specified operation".

Now, the newest ControlVault package is installed on my computer, but there's no FMA application.

Why is the Broadcom FMA application is not included in the latest driver package? Where can I find a separate installer for this application or how can I flash back the old firmware, so I can use the oldest driver package and my fingerprint reader?

Please help, I'm installing/reinstalling/rolling back Windows/downloading several programs in the last 2 days and I'm getting sick of it that I cannot make this thing working on a really expensive laptop!

Thanks!

Latitude E6540 - Bitlocker keeps asking for password

$

I have a Latitude E6540, running Windows 10 Enterprise (Anniversary Edition - 1607)

The main drive (256GB SSD) has been encrypted with bitlocker and that's working correctly. However I also have a USB flash drive (Kingston Data Traveller 3, 8GB) which is also encrypted by bitlocker.

The problem is that despite entering the password to unlock the drive, after a few minutes it locks the drive and asks for the password again. This is very, very, very annoying. Since it interrupts whatever I'm doing - Explorer shuts down, Office is unable to save files etc.

I also have several external USB hard drives (a mix of USB2 and 3) and they act the same way.

It only happens on this laptop, if I put the USB drive in my home PC (also Windows 10 Anniversary 1607 but Professional Edition not Enterprise) this does NOT happen.

As you can guess this getting more than a little annoying.

My best guess at this is that the USB controller is "dropping" the drive and then rediscovering it. With an unencrypted device this doesn't matter as it redetects and re-mounts the drive. With a bitlocker (or other encrypted) drive it has to ask for the password again. (and again and again and again ... you get the idea!)

I've tried turning off the "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" on the USB controller but that has had no effect.

Any ideas what is happening and how it can be fixed?

XPS 15z key problem.

My 2 key and my 3  key are acting strange. The 2 key will sometimes put down multiples 2s when I hit it. The 3 key sometimes won't got at all and then when I hit it again it requires a bit of a firmer touch and it will work or it will drop multiple 3s.

Thinking I may need to clean it but I'm not sure how. I've blasted some air under the keys but it doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Active Pen control panel not compatible with new XPS 13 2 in 1

I've just received my Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 along with the Active Pen PN556W. The pen instructions include steps to download the Active Pen Control Panel software. However, when I install the software I'm told "a supported tablet was not found on the system".

Without this software, I can't configure the two buttons near the tip of the pen. The standard Windows 10 pen control panel does allow me to configure what the button on top does.

Does Dell have any plans to make the Active Pen control panel compatible with this laptop? They do advertise the pen alongside the laptop, so it seems strange that the configuration software is not compatible.

XPS 15 9550 Battery Drain when plugged in (only charge if battery fully depleted)

I have an XPS 9550 6th Gen running Windows 10 (Just over 1 year, out of warranty).

The issue is when the charge plug is plugged in and hovering over the battery icon it says that battery is charging.  However the battery is not charging but discharging until the laptop switches off.  The only way for the battery to charge again is to deplete the battery until the laptop is unresponsive when the power button is pushed to switch lap top on.  Once there is no residual power in the battery it will start charging again to 100% after which the cycle repeats, discharge.

Things I have tried.

Latest Bios update - no change

Another A/C charger - worked ok for a few days

Replaced battery - no change

Bios settings - reset to default (info related to battery and A/C charge reports all good)

F12 - Dell diagnostics, reports all good

When Battery is disconnected the laptop works normally

The laptop charge socket seems tight and secure

I have searched the internet exhaustively but have not found this same issue reported.  The only feasible way I can use the laptop is to disconnect the battery.

Can anyone suggest anything?

I would also like to disable the battery instead of having to open it up to disconnect, is this possible?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Andrew

Disassembly Question on Dell E6530

I recently got a Latitude E6530 from a friend and I am looking to do a screen upgrade. I already researched it and I have to replace my screen and the LCD cable to upgrade to 1920x1080 since mine is currently 1366x768. I already found the correct parts. I usually like to have a video to reference when I am disassembling a new machine to make sure I do not miss anything. I found this guide below for an E6420 and I have a few questions.

1. Are these machines similar enough where the guide would be interchangeable or are there major differences in structure?

2. Is it really necessary to disassemble the whole machine? It seems like I should be able to thread the cable through the hinge but I have not taken enough of it apart to really tell if this is possible.

I have taken apart many laptops so I am comfortable doing it if I have to, but I also like to take the lazy way out if anyone knows a better way then taking out the whole motherboard.
