What's wrong with my Dell Inspiron 15-3521?

$

Whenever I turn it on, it always beeps 4 times, then a break, 4 times again, then a break and then 3 times.

Before that, the laptop fell on its side off of a metre and a half desk. The screen was very dark and I couldn't see a thing. It got fixed and was working fine until my friends and I accidentally whacked it. Then it started to do the things at the beginning of this post.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

screen has black blotches patches spots along edge

I have a Latitude E5500 series with a matte screen.  It is almost 3 years old. The pixels along the top and side edges of the screen have slowly been going black.  The top edge had lost up to 1/2 inch of display in some places.  (see picture 1 from two weeks ago)  Today there is a large black half circle at the top that is six inches wide and an inch thick (see picture 2).  Strangely, some of the top edge that was black before now works again..

I assume it is related to the slight pressure it receives when in my computer backpack.  It was not dropped or crushed or anything unusual.  Are these laptops too fragile to transport?

Do you think that replacing the screen will fix this?  Or is this a different problem?  It is not under warranty any more so I may try to replace it myself.  I see a video on YouTube about that.  Any suggestions?

Compatible screens for Inspiron 7559?

Does anyone know what screens are usable ? The current screen I pulled from it was a D P/N 0KFKV0 and when I talked to dell tech support after being transferred around they had no clue only option to send it to them to replace. Apparently they didn't get the idea I was looking for a option to upgrade the screen. Does anyone know if I can grab one of the touch screen 4k displays or do I have to stick to the 0KFKV0? Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Laptop battery replacement recommendation - Dell Inspiron 5347

Hello friends,

This is Jez, I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.

I need to get a replacement laptop battery for my Dad, he has a Dell Inspiron 5347 laptop.

The Dell website has the following batteries listed http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/category/ar/7686

Here are some pics of the original battery which came with the laptop.

The primary use for the battery will be for use when there is no power plug easily available, e.g. in the car, at a crowded coffee shop etc.

So, about 80% of the use will be with the power outlet.

There is one option on Amazon Puredick® New Replacement Laptop Battery for Dell Inspiron 15-5547 Series, TRHFF, 1V2F6, 01V2F Laptop Battery -12 Months Warranty[Li-ion 3-cell 11.1V 43Wh for $29.99, does that seem ok?

Does anyone on here know if there are any third party retailers/websites which offer comparable batteries at a more competitive price?

Thank you

XX

Ubuntu on Dell 7559 [HELP]

$

Hello everyone, I am trying to install Ubuntu on my Dell 7559. Specs i7 Skylake, 4GB nVidia, 8GB RAM. I am unable to even install the OS. I've done quite research about it, it says that the graphics card nVidia is incompatible with the OS.

Solutions were: on the boot menu, try to input the "nomodeset" text. (By editting GRUB loader). I tried it. It booted live (for the first time) but was unable to install it. I am asking whether there is a way that I can disable the nVidia graphics card directly from the BIOS. It would be nice if Dell could implement this in the Dell BIOS update!

Thank you!

XPS 13 9350, NVMe speeds not up to scratch?

Does the NVMe slot on the XPS 13 9350 support full PCIe x4 bandwidth? I have a 960 EVO inside and am unable to obtain anywhere near the speeds advertised (~3000MB/s). All I can manage is ~1800MB/s.

This issue is documented here as well:

What the Dell is up with the BIOS Updates?

About a week ago there was a BIOS update for my XPS 15 (it also applied to other systems). The documentation for it was a mess. It was indicated as either version 15, 16, 17, or 18 depending on which line you read. The .exe was "XPS_9550_1.2.18.exe". That no longer appears in the list of updates. Has this been withdrawn?  I have not yet applied it. Should I hold off?

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!

Hi I would like to convey my disgust at the level of customer service offered by Dell ' customer service'.

I personally own a DELL XPS desktop for business use and have endless problems with video card issues, this I manage ok with except for the occasional freezing and crashing. I purchased DELL due to the rave reviews. I also have a LENOVO laptop which had an issue with a hinge problem. I contacted LENOVO and even though 2 years out of warranty this was repaired. Apparently a known problem.

I have just found out that my son (who suffers from mental health issues) has exactly the same hinge problem with his DELL XPS 13 9343. He has contacted Dell Email Support and basically been informed the unit is out of warranty, It has now got to the stage that the laptop no longer connects to the internet as the problem has caused the wiring to break to the WIFI card. There is a casting inside (next to the hinge) that has broken. Unfortunately the email sent from DELL asks him to ring thereby assuming he can TALK ON THE PHONE. Unfortunately his illness prevents him from doing this. I have only just got involved when I saw him trying to effect a repair to enable him to get on the internet.

Surely DELL must have some other form of discussing issues whether in or out of warranty. People may be impaired in some way from making telephone calls !

I also believe this is a common problem on this particular laptop. I have read reviews going back to 2012 with the same problem and believe DELL should have a duty to repair this fault as it is obviously due to poor quality. I believe the hinge part is obviously not fit for purpose as it should withstand the screen being opened to operate.

Issues with killer ac wi-fi card

I was having issues with my card.  I recently purchased my laptop.  It is an xps 15 9550, running win 10 x64.  I've tried restarting the computer and re-installing the driver, but it did not work.  The thing that got it to work was running diagnostics in the BIOS.  I am concerned about this, and why it is now working.  Has anybody else seen this issue?  Are there any good ways to go about patching/fixing this?

EDIT: It seems that my wi-fi is once again, not working.  It will take very long to load a webpage, and either load the page after a while, or just say it is unable to load it.  I do not have this issue on any of my other computers on the network.

I have an xps 15 9550, and when I logged in with my admin account, it told me I am using a temporary account.  I am running win 10 x64.  In event viewer under application, there is a eventID, 1511 in regards to this.  What causes this, and how can this be prevented in the future?

LAPTOP HINGE POLICY QUESTION

$
0
0

I have cut and pasted this so I don't get it wrong !!

Surely the first statement of 'it would be covered under the additional ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE/COMPLETE CARE POLICY is contradicted by question 3 in which HINGES are listed as NOT COVERED !!!!!!!!

Because a hinge is under the "Normal wear and tear" policy, it is not covered by the default limited hardware warranty. It would be covered under the additional "Accidental Damage/Complete Care" warranty. If you did not purchase the additional "Accidental Damage/Complete Care" warranty, you will need to pay for the repair using our "Support Service for Expired Warranties" offering.

Q. What components fall under the Normal wear and tear policy?
A. Hinges, bent AC adapter cabling, keyboard keys, batteries

Q: The onsite technician said that the hinges are a manufacturing defect?
A: An onsite technician cannot make a Dell policy decision nor define a "manufacturing defect". All he can do is replace the parts we tell him to replace.

Q: I bought the Accidental Damage/Complete Care warranty. Dell should fix these hinges!
A: Hinges are not covered in the Accidental Damage/Complete Care warranty
Covered =
* Liquid spilled on or in unit
* Drops, falls, and other collisions
* Electrical surge

Not covered =
* Intentional acts of damage done by you or anyone else
* Fire
* Theft or loss
* Normal wear and tear (hinges, bent AC adapter cabling, keyboard keys, batteries)

Brand new XPS 13 9350 keeps crashing...

$
0
0

My new XPS 13 is basically just an expensive brick at the moment due to how often it crashes.

What happens?

BSOD, sometimes a weird BSOD with distorted colors.

When does it happen?

- When waking the computer from sleep (most often)

- When idle (a little more rare).

Additional details, flaws and general symptoms:

The computer is quite new and has only been used for educational work (light programming and writing documents). The possibility of malware is pretty much nonexistent. The computer performs poorly compared to other models I've used with identical processors. Thermal throttling is also a somewhat common problem with this computer, and the CPU is often working too hard when idle despite neither malware or other background applications (except from the Dell bloatware) being present.

The computer suffers from frequent coil whine and "buzzing", especially when scrolling or touching the screen.

I don't know if it's relevant, but it's all the problems I'm having with the computer at the moment, whether they're related or not I don't know. I added them in case the minidump might tell something.

Precision M4400 Smart Card Reader not working

$
0
0

I have a Dell Precision M4400 with a build in Smart Card Reader.

I'm using the Belgian eID program which is a program to login to  the government website.

On the laptop Windows 10 with all the updates is installed. I have, I think, the latest Broadcom driver installed for the smart card reader.

Now my problem: when I insert my ID card into the Smart Card Reader I get the error message "read error". I already changed the build-in Smart Card Reader with a new one but I still get the same error.

Is this a driver problem or does my laptop simply do not work with windows 10 anymore, or is it another problem?

All info to let it work would be very appreciated.

My battery was working fine for the last two months, but now its starting to act up.

It charges up to 95% then stops, and then every 10 seconds decides to charge up again. This issue is annoying and slows down my productivity with the constant change from AC to DC.

Please help sort this issue out.
