Does restoring a Windows 7 laptop to factory settings (i.e., not a clean install) require anything extra besides re-installing programs, such as updating drivers, Windows updates, etc?

Webcam or WebCan't

I have an Inspiron 17R 5737 running Windows 7 Professional. It is out of warranty by 6wks. I recently installed Skype and discovered that I have no driver for the built-in Y3PX8 camera/mic. After spending more time on support.dell.com than I want to admit, I also discovered that Dell did not install Webcam Central or any webcam driver initially.  Furthermore, there is no Imaging category listed under Devices in my Control Panel.  Next step per the website was to contact Tech Support.  I finally called Tech Support.  The agent was spinning his wheels and mine looking for a fix. He finally said to hang up the phone and wait for him to call me back.  It would seem fairly straightforward for the agent to provide a link to download/install the proper driver for my webcam.  Any suggestions?

Dell Laptop Inspiron N7010 Touchpad Not Working

Over a year ago, I had to send in my laptop to dell for repairs for the 2nd time.  Unfortunately, the 2nd time, it came back with a new hard drive -- which I was not anticipating since there was nothing wrong with the hard drive -- and they did not replace the hard drive the first time I sent it in  The touchpad worked fine before I sent it in for repairs.  When it was returned, the touch keypad was not working but I had no time to investigate it, since I had to get everything back on the hard drive.  So many months have gone by and I have not been able to get the touchpad working.  I had a few minutes today, so I tried looking on this forum but don't find an answer, as yet.  The touchpad hot key (key to the right of F12) doesn't do anything.  I saw something about trying a system restore but that is not a viable option for me because it has been so long since it stopped working (mysteriously, while at Dell for repair).  The keyboard /facing must have been replaced also, because it came back with one that has a huge dent in it.  How do I fix the touchpad?

I am running Windows 7 (as installed on 2nd repair).

[XPS 13] AC Adapter not recognized -> Battery not charging

$

My research has shown that this is a somewhat common problem. All of the sudden the battery stopped charging and the official dell AC Adapter, that shipped with the laptop, is listed as Unknown in the BIOS. I understand this happens because somewhere on the way the info from the pin that (for no good reason) identifies the AC adapter does not reach the charging circuit. This is supposed to be a safety mechanism (that no other manufacturer uses) that is obviously just an attack on off-brand chargers .The laptop is working fine (except for charging) as long as the AC adapter is connected.

What I did so far:

  1. notice I'm out of warranty
  2. try different power outlets
  3. try different AC adapter
  4. Check battery health (it's fine)
  5. replace Power Jack
  6. Voodoo

It's still not working and I'm out of ideas.

Please don't tell me I have to throw away a 1300$ laptop because they designed this stupid point of failure into the charging circuit.

Any ideas on the best Config for RAID-0 on the Precision M6800 using SSD's (and the mSATA slot)

Hi,  I have an M6800 on order that has a single 500GB 7200RPM hard drive.  I am going to upgrade the storage the day it arrives (removing the 500GB drive and not utilizing it at all).  I plan on setting up an SSD RAID-0 array and want to take advantage of the mSATA slot if possible.

I thought of using the 2TB 2.5" Seagate/Samsung Momentus SpinPoint ST2000LM003 hard drive for storing unused vhd\vhdx files as well as video and photos,  then using an SSD RAID array for the OS, Applications, Data and any active vhd's.

Is it possible to set up RAID-0 using the mSATA SSD slot and the primary internal hard drive slot?  I want to use those 2 drive connectors so I can still use the 2TB 2.4" regular notebook hard drive without removing the Blu-Ray Writer?  I plan to write video to Blu-Ray discs that will be stored on the internal 2TB drive, so removing the optical drive is something I want to avoid.

As a general question, Is there any advantage to using RAID with SSD's, or would a single 1TB mSATA SSD in the mSATA slot be nearly as fast in real world use as a 2 disk SSD RAID?  Would I have a noticibly quicker boot time and application load time if using SSD RAID?  I know the speed test specs show large increase in performance, but will the computer really run a lot faster with 2 x 500GB SSD in RAID-0 as opposed to getting a single 1TB SSD card for the mSATA slot?

I was planning on getting the Samsung Evo 840 SSD 2.5" drive and the matching Evo 840 mSATA card.  There is a Samsung 850 series drive, but it is only available in 2.5" (mSATA is not available in the 850 as far as I can  tell).

Please suggest the best solution that is compatible with the M6800 or provide any information that might help.

Thanks

Non working touchpad for P09E

Recently replaced the primary hard drive on an XPS 17 (L702X, Early 2011) laptop with a new solid state drive after the primary drive failed.  Loaded a clean Windows 7 64 bit install with ISO, activated, loaded drivers from Dell, and updated OS.  Touchpad would not work until I did a BIOS update and then quit working after other updates were done.  Touchpad briefly began working again after an NiVidea update and quickly stopped again after another reboot.  Have uninstalled and reinstalled driver, attempted all listed touchpad drivers.  It appears the Input_Synaptics_W7_A01_Setup-W2TF8_ZPE.exe driver is the correct driver yet no matter what is attempted the touch pad will not operate.  Even the <Fn>+<F3> toggle at times will not toggle the touch pad light consistently.  Most of the time the use of the toggle key for the touchpad is toggling the touchpad light but the touchpad is no longer functioning at all.  Any help?

PS.  The Dell Analysis Tool is not working on the laptop.

Alienware 13 Hard Drive Issue

Recently, I had a hard drive failure on my Alienware 13. A new hard drive was sent out and a Dell technician installed the new hard drive. It's been about 3 weeks since the repair and now I have an issue of no boot devices being detected. I've also checked the system BIOS to see if it detected the hard drive and it can not detect any hard drive. Is this another situation that requires a new hard drive and a Dell technician to fix it? I'm asking because at this point it's pretty frustrating that I've spent as much time getting my laptop repaired as I have playing on it. Other than the hard drive issues, I love the laptop. But without a working hard drive you can't exactly use it.

EDIT: I can also add that the ePSA error code is 2000:0155 if that helps at all

Dell e6400 Help - won't get past first screen

Hello all.  This is my first post here; I am grateful there is a forum like this to seek help.  Slightly embarrassed to admit I am having a problem with this, as I'm a proficient Computer Science major in college at this time.  I have a Dell e6400 that I purchased used for my daughter.  She has had it since Christmas; all of a sudden tonight she goes to turn it on.  It gets to the first screen that has the blue loading bar, the Dell logo, and the BIOS Revision A34 notation at the bottom.  The bar gets about a quarter full, then it shuts off.  I took the access panel off (had to pretty much rip it off as the center screw is stripped beyond belief, so I'll be replacing that as well), and I removed and reinserted the RAM.  This did not help..so at this point I'm stumped as I've never encountered such an issue before.  Any suggestions?  I'm assuming some hardware may need to be replaced, aside from the access panel, lol....  Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

Specs:

- 4GB

- cannot boot into Windows 7

Good evening,

I am working on a friend's laptop.  Originally, the laptop had a bad power adapter.  They heard a "popping" sound from what sounded like it came from the laptop itself.  Laptop went dead.  They bought a new power adapter but it won't even light up the LED's on the laptop itself.  The new adapter definitely works.

Of course it's used for taxes, home business info, etc.  So they ask me to look at it since I have 10+ years in IT and can do most PC repair stuff without batting an eye.  Well, here I am.  Laptop is not under warranty AND it's still being paid on as it was financed by Dell.

Here is what I did to troubleshoot:

1) Verified power adapter got power and works with another Dell laptop.

2) Verified laptop will not power on.

3) Removed bottom screws, plate, battery, etc.

4) Removed keyboard, screws, and top plate.

5) Found a lots of black markings on the motherboard, specifically at the circuitry near the battery port.

Determined it needed a motherboard and maybe other stuff but wasn't sure.  Bought a new motherboard with a 90 day warranty from CHINA on eBay.  Also bought a new keyboard since a key was missing and new fan since it was in rough shape.

The repair steps:

1) Removed old motherboard and took off heatsink and CPU.

2) Reseat CPU on new motherboard, added Arctic 5, Reinstalled heatsink.

3) Added new fan and buttoned everything up.  Triple checked connections

4) THERE IS LIFE!  Power supply now feeds power to the laptop as LED's are lit.

5) Power button is pressed, nothing on the video but the fan spins up and sounds healthy.  No caps lock LED.  Hooked up to a monitor DOES NOT WORK.  No beeping, nothing.  I figure maybe the CPU isn't working so I try reseating it.

6) Tear it all down again.  Reseat CPU, new thermal paste, reinstall heatsink, button it back up.  SAME THING.  This time it's not fully reassembled.

I tried doing the D + Power Button to test the LCD.  Looks like the screen does something, but it's dim and doesn't last long.  I can't see if it tries to do anything in detail, but I notice a little bit of light omitted from the side.  Tried discharging any static.

Normally, I would throw in another CPU or something, but I don't have spare parts for this laptop.  How can I continue to troubleshoot this?  Maybe a bad motherboard?

I have $110 in parts into this thing so far.  The entire laptop goes for around 400 on eBay.  I just don't want to be throwing money at it without thoroughly testing.  Any help is appreciated.
