Inspiron 1100 - Can't upgrade BIOS - "Running on an unsupported system"

0
0

Downloaded A22 to upgrade from A06 to A32.  Downloaded ISO file (don't have floppy).

Read somewhere that this computer needs A22 before it can be upgraded to A32

Burned CD on my mac which put these 4 files on the CD:

BOOTCAT.BIN

BOOTIMG.BIN

I1100A22.TXT

README.TXT

Hit F12 on bootup and selected the CD but it will not boot, goes into XP

Am I missing something?  Do I have any other options to get A22 installed?

I posted this in another discussion back in February but didn't get a reply so I thought I'd try it again.

Thanks

First, I turn on the laptop just pressing the power button, nothing else. It shows the Dell logo, the bar does not load then black screen appears. Then I turn off.
Then I turn on the laptop again and i press F2, apparently the bar is loaded very fast. It shows a black screen and in the bottom corner "F12 Boot Options". Nothing happens. Turn off again.
Then I turn on the laptop again and i press F12, the bar is loaded again, and it shows a menu.
"Boot mode is set to:UEFI: Secure boot:ON
UEFI BOOT:
OTHER OPTIONS:"
Annnd nothing more, can't boot W8, can't boot whit the Dell DVD, and can't enter in the bios setup. Any solution??????

I am trying to restore my laptop to factory settings.

I've done the re-installation just like the link: http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=DSN_339949

I am lost on step 5,  downloading the drivers. when I put in the disk, the system model options it gives me are all for Vostro Notebooks. I have a Vostro A860, so i am not sure which are the correct drivers to download.

When I did the Reinstallation, it did not do the internet part, so I'm currently not able to connect to the internet and just download the files from the website.

I could be doing something totally wrong, but wanted to see if you could help at all.

Thanks,

Morgan

Power failure when I pickup my XPS 14 Ultrabook

Hi,

When my computer is on, if I try and pickup the computer and while doing so put any pressure on the bottom to lift the Ultrabook, it shuts off completely and won't start again for around 10 minutes. It seems pressure on the back plate is shutting the system down. Not sure why it won't start again. After 10 minutes of pushing the power button it finally reboots and starts the boot cycle. It seems there is a short somewhere that is cutting the power, but not sure why it takes 10 minutes before the power button works again. Any ideas? Thanks....

Problem with charger/power cable

My laptop has suddenly stopped charging, it was fine when I went to work but when I came home nothing. The blue light at the plug on the charger is lit and when I plug it into the laptop the white charging light directly above the charge port flashes. The problem comes when i try to switch the laptop on, as soon as I switch it on the white flashing light turns dark orange/red and the blue light at the end of the cable flashes dim/bright. The laptop will turn on but the battery indicator shows empty with a red cross but the laptop stays on however functionality is limited ( no wifi). I have tried the laptop with plugged in with no battery and it will not turn on. Any ideas???

Thanks to all for trying but this is getting silly...even when I click the BLUE in the email it opens to a nice big blank screen....but I can click everyone else's threads and read them.....

Quite odd and frustrating...still no solution...but when I unchecked (disabled) the USB ROOT enable power option, I have booted successfully...and this makes no sense since I am using AC power

Could the Fingerprint reader be causing a charging issue on my Precision M4500?

0

I'm really not very techy so I am doubly screwed when it comes to complicated repairs, but it seems I've read there's been issues pertaining to the battery charging problem I am experiencing on my laptop?

I bought this laptop second hand, it worked great for about nine months. I would occasionally get messages about this Fingerprint Reader (which isn't even accessible to me), so I ignored them (I think). It also seems to be running a bit warm lately; could there be a connection? I did the Dell diagnosis scan but it didn't pick anything up about the battery. It said I had UNKNOWN drivers that needed to be updated, but apparently the device is unknown so no update can be found. That is what I think it is pointing to though...the Finger Print reader.

I'm  down to 7% battery and have to keep it plugged in at ALL times, plus the cord is REALLY fussy too. I have to position it just perfectly or it won't provide any power at all. It never charges any more now like it used to and I know using the power cord is a solution that won't last very long either . When that happens,I'll be out a small boatload of money on top of the job I recently lost!

Any solutions would be VERY appreciated!

Inspiron 7720 (17R SE) - Fan Speed Control Issue

Hi,

I have got laptop Inspiron 7720 17RSE [2] with configuration:

  • Intel i7-3630QM
  • Nvidia GT650M
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD (OCZ VERTEX 4)
  • 1TB HDD 5400RPM.
  • Motherboard (from 03-2013, rev. H dedicated for Windows 7)
  • BIOS A14
  • Laptop is pretty new, built on the beginning of 05-2013 and in use since 1 week.

It is my second Inspiron 7720 17RSE, because the first one was exchanged to the mentioned above.

The configuration of the first one [1] was pretty similar with differences:

  • Intel i7-3610QM
  • built in 07-2012
  • used with BIOS A03 to A14
  • Unfortunately I do not have information about motherboard.

My problem is connected with speed of cooling fan in [2].

When cool laptop boots up the cooling fun does not work and it is ok. But after about 30-50 minutes of usage (on 0% of processor utilization on average) it turns on cooler and speeds to ~2600RPM. The problem is that it never slows down. It either keeps this speed or speeds up to ~3200RPM (sometimes even ~3600RPM) and it keeps it until laptop is turned on (even switching operation system during work - Windows 7/8 does not help)).

What is interesting, if I am utilizing the cores on the level of ~90-100% just after the computer was turned on, it speeds up the cooling fun and when the utilization decreases it slows it down. But after mentioned 30-50 minutes no chances for such behaviour.

I would not write about this issue , but the problem is that my [1] laptop was exchanged to the new one [2], because of this very issue.

When laptop [1] was new it worked really silently and no problem at all. After half a year, because of a problem with my original motherboard (not connected with noisy work) the new motherboard was installed in it. And from that time (01-2013) noisy work appeared. Finally my previous laptop [1] was exchanged to the new one [2] by Dell and I hoped that noisy work will never happen again. Unfortunately, the same story with the new one..

Today person from Technical Support exchanged my original motherboard in [2] to the new one (not refurbished one). It has the same revision H like one originally installed in [2]. After some test I have managed that it works as noisy as in the past.

I have got installed program AIDA64 and I can monitor temperatures.Normally, during my tests with almost no processor utilization, PCH Diode reaches about 65 degrees and it is the biggest of the visible temperatures (in this program). The rest of components (cores, iGPU, DIMM, 1TB HDD) are below 50 degrees.

What is the reason for such noisy work. Is it caused by bug in BIOS or is it normal for this motherboard?

Basically I do not have guarantee about proper temperature of SSD drive, but I am able to test it if needed.

Frustration with Dell Drivers

0
0

For years I've been buying Dell laptops for the companies I've worked for.  I keep thinking that at some point, Dell will figure out (it's really not hard) how to fix the frustration that I am sure all of us end users deal with frequently.  Maybe it's just me, but these frustrations seem so obvious and easy to fix on Dell's part, it just makes no sense.

1.)  Why does Dell use these cryptic driver "codes" for the names of their downloads and containing folders?  To Dell's credit, most of the newer drivers do have slightly more descriptive names, instead of R52987, maybe it's now called "IDT_92HDXXX-HD-AUDIO_A04_R302809.exe".  At least the word "Audio" is in the title now, but then of course, when I unpack the driver and it get's installed in my C:\Dell\Drivers folder, it's put in a folder called "WGPPH".  WGPPH???  How about a folder simply called "Audio"???

2.)  Why can't they at least add a sensible description to the drivers?  For example, the "Intel AMT HECI, v.4.2.30.1040PV, A03" driver.  The "description" says "Intel AMT 4.2.30.1040 PV MEI Driver".  Does that really help anyone with what this driver is???  How about something like "This driver will fix the error in device manager with the device PCI Simple Communications Controller".  Then maybe follow it up with a description about WHAT the Intel AMT is?

3.)  I understand the need to keep old drivers posted and available to download (in case people have trouble with the new driver), but how about being a little more clear about which driver is which?  On a particular laptop under the "Audio" drivers, there are two listed.  Both have the same title, but with different version numbers (apparently).  You would think that the newer version number would be first, or have a newer release date, but nope...both release dates are the same exact date and the apparent older driver is listed as "recommended" where as the newer driver is listed as "optional".  Is the newer driver still going through testing or something?  Give us a clue at least as to what and why the difference of the two files.

4.) When I click the link to download a driver I almost always get a question about my download method...either a "Single-file download" or "Use Download Manager".  In my case, I always want to use the single-file download...and even better, there is a checkbox that offers to "remember my choice".  But does it remember??? No way...IT ALWAYS ASK ME HOW I WANT TO DOWNLOAD IT EVEN WHEN I TELL IT TO REMEMBER.  Why offer this choice and checkbox if it never works???

5.) If you Google "Broadcom USH missing driver" there are many people trying to figure out what this is and where the driver is located so they can download it.  This complain kind of goes hand in hand with my other complaints, but why doesn't Dell CLEARLY show people where to download this driver and call it something similar?  Instead, we are left to guess that it's the Dell Control Vault driver (which is buried under the security downloads).  This is so frustrating - for many people.

6.)  I love the fact that Dell puts a unique service tag on each computer they sell, but when I enter it in the support site, why can't it exactly tell me what hardware is installed in my computer (from the factory) with clear descriptions and quick links to the exact drivers?  Instead there are dozens and dozens of drivers listed under all the subcategories.  It appears they tried to do this somewhat by offering a choice of "Filtered driver results for your service tag" option, but even that doesn't work.  My laptop does not have a modem, yet when I filter the drivers for my system, there the driver is!  I have the nVidia video card, yet even when "filtered" for my service tag, both video drivers (intel and nvidia) show up?!?

7.) Can Dell please explain what their "Dell System Software" is?  The description says it's necessary for correct operation, but that isn't the case.  I can have a dell machine without this installed and it seems to run windows just fine.  It also says it installs updates appropriate for the specific computer.  When and where does it do this?  There is no application that I can find for it.  Does it hide in the background?  What exactly is it doing?

8.) What is an end user supposed to make of 14 different firmware options for DVD drives listed under the "Removable Storage"?  Are we supposed to update the firmware of our DVD drive, and how do we know which one we have?  There are 14 of them listed (in this particular example)!  (I realize you can go to device manager and get an idea about what DVD drive you have, but in my case, it didn't match anything on the dell driver/firmware options)

9.) Maybe it's just a Windows 7 thing, but I've noticed lately that when I try and install the Intel chipsets (provided by Dell in the driver downloads), it unpacks the Chipset files into the C:\Dell\Drivers folder, but it never runs the chipset utility?  There doesn't appear to be any instructions on Dell's part on what we are supposed to with it at that point.

I just had to rant about these things.  It's would be such an easy thing to help out the end user with better descriptions, organization and simply clearer instructions on what is important and what is not.  After all these years, they still can't seem to get it right.

Hi All,

I just got my new Vostro 3560 yesterday.

I had just initiated the initial setup of the system when it asked me to create a recovery disc.

I did not have enough free time so I skipped that option and moved on. Now when I try to look for any option to create it, am not able to find anything.

Any help in this regard would me much appreciated.

Restoring recovery partition and mediadirect on inspiron 6400

0

Greetings,

After deciding to give my old inspiron 6400 to my parents I formatted everything and installed win xp from the scratch. What I did not know was that I also wiped out recovery partition and media direct partition, so I am wondering is it possible for me to restore those without reformatting everything once again and it seems that I do not have anything but OS DVD (the black one). I mean these are not very critical for their use but if something goes wrong then it'd be handy to have the recovery partition/utilities and mediadirect may help them to watch dvds etc.

I'd be very glad if someone may help

Best Regards

Need assistance for Dell Inspiron laptop body problem

0

I have Dell inspiron N5110 laptop. I'm from India and I purchased this on june 2011. Laptop was an excellent piece for the 1st year. I haven't faced a single issue during that period. After the warranty lapses, one day (dec 2012) I saw that one of the portion which is connecting the LED display to the main body was coming out of it's place or simply it was broken internally. Somehow I managed to work with it. But it is getting worse day by day. I have not seen such bad built quality laptop. I can assure there was no damage done to the laptop from my side. I handled it carefully throughout. A bigger screen (15.6 inch) simply applies a lot of pressure to those two tiny plastic connector.

Now the question is, my warranty for the laptop has expired. So what kind of support I may expect from Dell? Can the body or those two patrs only be replaced? If yes then what will be the cost because I'm ready to repair it. Technically my laptop still runs smooth and there is no issue in display also. Please help to get a resolution for this problem. Sometime I fear that one day I'll see the LED displayed might get detached from the whole body.
