I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 14z. I would like to know how I am supposed to tell when my laptop is fully charged when it is powered off, does anyone know? There is a light on the charger as well as on the laptop. I had it plugged in over an hour turned it on and still wasn't fully charged. I really don't want to damage my battery or charger so I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

XPS M1730 Won't boot

Hello,

My Dell XPS M1730 won't boot anymore. If I press the power button, all the lights turn on and the num-lock and caps-lock buttons are working. If I press Fn+power, only the left speaker light turns on and the caps-lock light is flashing. If I press D+power, I see colors on the LCD, and after that nothing happens, just like I only press the power button. Can someone tell me how I can solve this problem? Thanks!

Hi guys,

I recenlty buy a xps 14 with 500gb sata and then buy other ssd disk to change the original.

The 500gb is working ok and has the recovery partition.

The ssd disk has a windows 7 installed but I want to replacate the original conditions with

one dell recovery partition.

I create a partition and copy the hdd recovery partition to another partition on the new ssd.

Then restart and press F8. Choose repair but the menu does not show the Dell Factory recovery at the bottom of the dialog like before.

I try to select the image from others ways but is imposible.

Can someone help me with some useful guide?

Dell Latitude D800 gets strange blue screen error upon startup, but onlyl at certain locations

When I turned on my Dell Latitude D800 in my NJ apartment last week, it worked fine.

However, I recently moved to NY and when I plugged the computer into any of the sockets in my new apartment, the battery icon flashes orange (instead of showing a steady green) and a strange startup error is displayed as white text on a blue screen, before Windows ever starts (the full text of the error appears below).

But when I brought the laptop to my office (also in NY) and plugged it in, and booted it up, everything started fine, after a notice that "Windows has recovered from a serious error." So I thought the problem went away and just brought my laptop back home. But back at home, the original error occurred again when I tried to boot up.

Here is the full text of the startup error that appears as white text on a blue screen:

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode. Technical information:

Here are all of the things that I tried with no success:

1) I tried to boot up from every socket in my apartment, including both with surge-protected sockets and without.

2) I tried to use different power cords from two other Dell models.

3) I tried to start up the computer without any battery at all (using just the power cord).

4) I purchased a brand new battery for $50 (since the old battery was totally dead after 4 years of use) but that didn't help.

I have no idea why the same computer starts up fine at my NY office or in my old NJ apartment, but when I'm in my new NY apartment, the laptop produces the start up error above even though two OTHER Dell laptops start up perfectly fine in my new NY apartment.

Any solutions and/or troubleshooting suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hello,

I have a M6800 mobile workstation bought 11/2013.

Since I've had it I had to replace the hard drive with one Dell sent back in January 2014

The computer lately freezes up after about 10 minutes of use and I have to do a hard power down, losing all my work, and possibly damaging my internal and external drives.

I looked on support page and have flashed the Bios today 7/23/2014 with the latest available. There are so many updates available is there another someone can recommend to stop this?

Also when I unplug AC power adapter the screen goes dim and flickers.

Thanks,

Phil

SMART Extended Self-Test

Hi there

I have an XPS 15 (l02x) and have recently been having trouble with the BSOD, resulting in constant re-starts. I ran the My Dell Checkup program and it says I have 40 bad sectors, and it failed the SMART Extended Self-Test. I did a clean install of Windows 7 but I'm still getting the message, but when I run the diagnostic it gets as far as the SMART Extended Self-Test but doesn't complete. I've left it over an hour and it still doesn't complete. Initially it only took about 15 minutes.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Thanks in advance

Gary

Getting weird battery stats

Hi,

I got a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series and I've been getting some weird battery info here. Right now 21:30pm, I have 8 hours 52 mins. Now few minutes ago I had 5 hours. My brightness is not too high and most of the time, I just browse the web and listen to music. I just would like to know why my battery tends to go up or down at times.

Dell Vostro 3450 Inexplicably fails after RAM upgrade

0
0

Alright, I upgraded the RAM in a Vostro 3450 laptop a couple of days ago. Went from one 2GB PC3-10600 stick to two 2x4GB PC3-10666 sticks.

My process was as follows:

  • Shutdown, Unplug and remove battery
  • Hold power button for ~10 seconds to clear and extra power left in capacitors that I could
  • Remove memory door from back
  • Clip antistatic wrist clip so it was on metal, and grounded manually as well
  • remove old stick of RAM, place in antistatic bag
  • Blow out some dust from area ( I checked later to make sure none had lodged in the way of the connectors)
  • place in new RAM sticks, using fingers to push back retaining clips so that I wouldn't be pushing on it so hard
  • Boots up, I verify I see all the new RAM in BIOS
  • Boot up into windows, make sure windows sees all the new ram
  • Boot to and run memory diagnostic with no issues; good ram
  • Return computer to user

  • ...Two days later...

  • Now the computer does not boot. User claimed it didn't work the first time he tried it (I gave to him friday evening he tried using first monday morning and left it at work in the mean time)
  • It cuts on, and then the lights (the three lights in the top right area of the keyboard) flash beginning with the left one.
    • Lights go (with one on at a time) Left, Center, Right,Center, computer off.
    • Normally (before I changed RAM and immediately after but before it was returned) they would go Left, center, right, center, left and then the screen would cut on.
  • I cannot boot, even to the BIOS.
  • Made sure no USB media, expresscards, SD cards, CDs....
  • Tried reseating new RAM, no difference
  • blew out area again and visually inspected RAM and RAM connections, no issues
  • Tried booting strictly off AC power, wouldnt even try to turn on
  • Inserted battery into laptop with AC adapter in, no indication of charging, but does try booting like mentioned above
  • Verified that Battery and charger both work individually and as a pair in another laptop of same model
  • Removed RAM and tried booting, received POST code of two beeps (translates to no RAM in the owners manual)
  • Visually inspected area around RAM slots, no apparent problems
  • Tried to smell for any smoke or blown/shorted electronics. No smells apparent
  • Put old RAM back in and tried booting, fails to boot like mentioned above
  • Tried old and new RAM in another laptop of same model with no problems
  • Put new RAM back in laptop, removed battery and came here.

I am out of ideas of what might be going on? The only thing I am left with is a motherboard problem that manifested more than an hour after installing the RAM and passing multiple checks and with no indicators that it was dropped or abused in a way that would cause a motherboard problem.

As far as I can tell, it's getting past POST (because it knows there is RAM there) and failing before it can get to even loading the BIOS or doing anything with the screen. Did I screw up somehow? Based on what I know, this is a textbook RAM upgrade. Is there anything I missed? Thoughts, suggestions, ways to fix  the damn laptop?

Need to restore computer to factory defaults

I had to take in my Dell Inspiron 5521 to replace the hard drive. Once I got it back, one of the first things I did was try to download Gimp off the internet. Unfortunately it seems I also downloaded a lot of viruses and annoying adware when I did so.
There was so much junk on my computer, and since I just got it back I hadn't put hardly anything on it, so I decided I'd just restore it to factory defaults and just be a lot more careful downloading gimp in the future.
Well, I looked online and followed the directions I found, only they didn't work.
I went to "settings" on the right hand side of the screen and clicked on "change PC settings". Whether I chose the option to refresh the PC without affecting my files, or to just remove everything and reinstall windows I always get the same message, "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made."
Then it gives me the option to "check for solutions to this problem", but when I click on this all it does is take me to "recent places".

No Right-Click

Hello All,

I recently acquired a Dell Latitude 2100, an 10.1" netbook running Win 7 HP, 2 GB RAM and a 60 GB HDD. Love the little thing. But over the last 12 hours its lost its ability to right-click. Doing a right-click simply winds up depressing the button, but no context menu appears; it doesn't matter what level I try it at, files, directories, programs, applications, etc. . There are simply no right-click menus / responses.

I've run sfc and it came back completely clean. I've also tried both a wireless and a wired mouse all without success. The left-click button and generalized movement are excellent.

Any suggestions as to cause and cure will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

BearPup

Click of death ? - Dell Inspiron 17r SE (7720)

0

Hello there,

I have a Dell Inspiron 17r SE (7720) which I bought just over 2 years ago. It's been running pretty smoothly (except for a problem where sometimes when it's in sleep mode, it starts heating up even though it's asleep).

In recent weeks, when I've turned it on it gets stuck on the window with the DELL logo and a clicking can be heard quite clearly and is repeated several times (up to 10-15 times), then the noise stops and the PC remains blocked (I can't even access the BIOS).

After several attempts, by switching the laptop on and off several times and leaving it turned on some time (up to one hour or even longer), the PC finally passes the window with the DELL logo (making only 2-3 "clicks") and starts Windows 7 without any problem. Sometimes the "click" starts again later on, which makes the PC freeze completely

.
According to the info I have found, it seems that it's the hard drive that is dying. Is that correct? Or could the problem be something else? (bad connection between components, motherboard, etc)

And is the problem necessarily with the hard drive where Windows is installed? (this laptop has two discs)

Thank you in advance for your help.

David
