O2Micro Memory Card Reader on Latitude with Windows 8.1

$

I have a Latitude E5520 and a Lattitude E5530, both have the O2Micro SD Memory Card Reader.  The reader worked fine in Windows 8, but after installing the 8.1 update, the SD card reader does not work at all when inserting a memory card.  There is no audible sound, no disk drive available in Windows Explorer, and in Device Manager, the O2 is not listed in "Storage Controllers" where it should be.

There are two versions of the driver that I've found online on the Dell site, but neither one solves the issue.

I found this workaround, but it's not a very good one:

  • In Windows 8.1, press Start button and type fix devices, and click Find and fix problems with devices in the results list.
  • Click Next and allow it to check for problems.  It will come back with the option to enable the device Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 1C1A or something similar
  • Click Apply this fix
  • When done, close the troubleshooter and open Windows Explorer, and you should see the card reader
  • In Device Manager, you should see O2Micro Integrated MMC/SD controller and O2Micro Integrated MS/MSPRO controller

Now, here's the bad news - after you reboot, or even go into sleep and come back out, the card reader is gone, and you have to do these steps over again.

If anyone has a permanent fix, I would love to know what it is!

I have a inspiron 1720. I have Vista before but recently upgraded to win 7. But this didn't fix the problem...ever since I have this laptop (6 years), it always restarts randomly and repeatedly, sometimes can be as frequent as twice within an hour. My fan is working and is not overheat. Notice the problem usually occurs when I am watching video regardless it's youtube or using 1 of the media player. Please help!

I disconnected the battery, pressed the power button for 30 seconds and reconnected the battery. The ultra-book turned on. And everything looks good as nothing happened. However next day same problem. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it again. The ultra-book again turned on. But it is happening everyday. Any idea? The PC is just came out of warranty.

Can't boot from hdd and can't boot from disc or usb. It tells us it can see the hdd but then claims to have no bootable items. We've pulled the hdd out and used another computer to add windows 7 successfully but the laptop just dosen't want to work. We'd both really apreciate any ideas. thanks heaps guys :)

XPS L702X failed to boot with no response to F2 and F12

Hi, my laptop suddenly failed to boot. The DELL logo will show up with the progress bar, F2 for Setup and F12 for choose boot sequence option showing on the screen as well, but press F2 or F12, none of them will work. After the progress bar completed, it will be a blank screen with a vertical bar at top left blinking. Hit the power button, it will turn off the machine at that point. It seems the boot up sequence never even get to BIOS. Please help if there is anything to try other than calling Dell support? Thanks, Roger

Flashing Checkerboard Pattern on Dell Inspiron N5010

Recently (may 2014) my Dell inspiron n5010 (purchased in july 2011; currently out of warranty) started having problems. On pressing the power button after sometime the display started flashing a checkerboard pattern with the computer freezing. I tried connecting an external display availing the same results. I contacted dell customer care and they said it might be an issue regarding a fried gpu or faulty lcd screen and quoted me a hefty sum of Rs. 11,000/- for a "golden part replacement".

1.) Is the dell customer care correct in identifying the cause of the problem.

2.) What if my problem is not resolved by replacement of these parts, will my money be refunded.

I have attached the screenshots of the laptop screen depicting the problem.

Disable gpu

Hi, i have an older vostro 1510 and it has two gpu: some unnamed (pm 965) on motherboard and the second nvidia 8400. And i would like to disable that unnamed gpu because of temperature (always it is hotter than nvidia) and because i dont want use it. Under the thermal cooling assebly there is at first processor, at second that unnamed gpu and at third nvidia. And as i said - the unnamed gpu is for most time hotter than nvidia (even though i dont use it). In device manager (win) under display adapters there is mentioned only nvidia - and anywhere i cannot find the unnamed gpu. So, does anybody know how can i disable the unnamed gpu? Thank you.

My Inspiron 15R doesn't wake up when it goes into sleep mode!

I just bought my laptop 3 days ago and when I close the lid or leave it without working on it, it goes into sleeping mode and the screen turns off. When I try to open the lid or wake it up the screen won't respond even though the laptop is on! I have to hard reset it by holding the power button and it reboots normally..

So what is the problem?!

PS: I tried all the power options but nothing helped!

Also my graphic cards are both up to date with their drivers

I just want to mention that when I disable the Intel graphic card the laptop hibernates when I closed the lid, but disabling it causes a lot of errors!

Thanks in advance

Dell Inspiron 14z N411z Battery LED Blinks White & Orange, no power or charging?

My Dell Inspiron 14z N411z Battery LED Blinks White & Orange, and there is no power or charging?

This is the second time this has happened.  The first time it happened, my laptop was under warranty and Dell came out to "fix" it.

However, it's only been a few months and it broke again...only this time I'm out of the warranty period.

Does anyone know what these LED battery codes mean?

I have tested several Dell OEM AC adapters and none of them will power on or charge my 14z.

I have already gone through these troubleshooting steps:  http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=266440

CAPS LOCK on Inspiron Mini 910 running Windows 8.1 x86...

$

Hi...

Recently, I bought a used Inspiron Mini 910.  After replacing the broken STEC SSD ("Operating System Not Found") with a Kingspec 64GB one, I had an extra license of Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit & loaded it on the Mini and it works very well!!! (Not bad for a little Atom processor that's not even x64 capable with only 2GB RAM...)

Anyway, I have all the drivers & Device Manager shows no yellow exclamation points.  However, the one thing I can't tell is the status of CAPS LOCK.  With the cramped keyboard, I find myself hitting that button instead of  the letter A.  Yes, I could use Windows 8.1's "Ease of Access Center" to give me sounds when I press it, but that's not always useful since I often have the PC on mute...

So, I'd like some sort of visual on-screen software to tell me that CAPS LOCK is on.  I know that Dell provides such utilities for certain model lines...  So...

Does Dell have any generic software that visually shows the CAPS LOCK status on Windows 8.1 32-bit?  It could be software that comes with XPS models, servers, limited to Dell / Inspiron PCs, etc.  If it's compatible with Vista or newer, then I'm fine with it--but I don't want to load an old version designed for XP only.

I'd rather avoid 3rd party software as 1) too much of it loads adware & malware; 2) Dell's version would be free.  And the BIOS has been upgraded to the most recent, A07.  Any thoughts?

XPS 12 Longevity Mode and Deskop Mode

So, I have been searching for the solutions to enable the Longevity Mode or Desktop mode for some time.
One month ago, I bought the XPS 12 4200U and I was wondering how to extend my battery and take good care of it. People reply that either update bios or install some other Dell application but I'm on the latest firmware and Bios. Also, some say that left it charge for 2 weeks and soon the option for those two mode will no longer be greyed out. It has already been a month and the option is still unavailable. I also find that some dell battery model doesn't support these modes. I'm not sure what to do to enable the options, I have tried all the methods shown in Internet. Am i gotten a defect battery?

(I know quite a lot of people having the same issues here but so far I haven't seen a satisfying answer overall)

Thanks in advance!

Removing Nvidia GeForce 8600M video card

$

With the demise of Windows XP, I want to reformat my Dell Vostro 1700 laptop for Linux (Ubuntu Mint). I currently have it dual boot with XP and Mint, but Mint has trouble working with the installed Nvidia card.

So my thought is to remove the 256MB Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT card and revert to the Vostro 1700's built-in graphics. Is this even possible, and if so how do I remove the card? Or is the Nvidia integrated into the motherboard and not removable?

Also, anyone have any thoughts about dumping Windows for Ubuntu Mint? I'm comfortable with using Linux.

Thanks.

Need to transfter Outlook 2007 from old PC with Windows XP to new laptop Windows 8

$

I want to start out by saying, I am basically a novice so if I’m not providing enough info please advise and I will do my best to provide more. I have new Dell Inspiron M731R laptop w/windows 8. I thought I had purchased Outlook but it wasn’t included w/my preinstalled Microsoft Office package. My old PC has XP and I have Outlook 2007 on it. I don’t have the discs as it was preinstalled on the PC. I don’t have anything on a cloud. Questions:

1 - Is there a way to transfer the Outlook 2007 (to do, contacts, tasks & calendars) to my new lap top so as not to start from scratch?

2 – If I purchased Outlook 2013, how can I transfer the info (to do, contacts, tasks & calendars) of Outlook 2007 to my new lap top that would have Outlook 2013 so as not to start from scratch?
