Hi, I am unable to get past the username/ password screen in win xp pro. The problem is even in all 3 safe modes, I am still being prompted to first hit ctrl+alt+delete, then put my info, followed by a wireless network search. I haven't used the laptop in years, and don't have the codes.

I need help disabling these settings, any help please? I am completely out of options.

XPS15 with Win8.1 - how to back up and restore OS partition?

$

Hello,

I have a new XPS15 9530 with Windows 8.1.

So far, I have resized the main OS partition from the original size down to about 150GB.

I am now trying to create a backup image of the Windows OS partition (not the whole disk!) before I start installing all kinds of software, but I am not able to successfully restore that image. I tried using partimage (SystemRescueCD) and Clonezilla. Both successfully create the image and also restore it back to the partition (supposedly), but afterwards Windows can not boot.

I boots into rescue mode and then tries to fix file system errors unsuccessfully. It then requires a full system reset in order to get Windows up and running again.

I think I am missing something, but I'm not sure what? I am only backing up and restoring the main OS partition. Do I maybe need to back up and restore the MSR or some other partition as well?

Thanks,

MSA

Inspiron 11 3000 Series (3137) 8gb RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade the ram on the newly released inspiron 11 3137. The laptop has one dimm slot that is also user accessible. It is currently only shipping with 2gb of ram. I realize the manual states it can support up to 4gb of ram, but has anyone tried adding a single 8gb stick?

It comes with win8 64 bit, and packs a recently released 4th gen haswell celeron. I'm thinking it may support an 8gb stick, but don't want to order without confirmation that someone has gotten it to work.

SD card reader does not work

I have Dell Latitude E6410. It has built in smart card reader (personal ID card) and a SD memory card reader. the first one works just fine, the other is not. It is not problem of the card - the same card is read through a USB connection device but not through the card reader itself. I have installed both drivers suggested on the site, tried separately and together. Nothing. Any ideas what else can I do? And one more thing. In Device Manager the smart card reader is present but the SD memory card reader is not. Or I cant find it. What is the device name for this card reader? And if it is really so, that the device manager has not detected it, what to do then?

Vostro 3560 Black Display Issue

Hi all,

I am a proud owner of Vostro 3560 ( i7 Q, 8GB, ATI 7670M HDD+SSD).

But something is really wrong with my notebook. The issue is as follow:

I have chosen from Power options to turn off the display after 5 minutes ( tried also with more. )

So after 5 minutes, the display is turned off. I am moving my mouse to turn it on, but it doesnt show anything. Just the backlight is diplayed ( the screen become more lighter ), The notebook remains responsible, but nothing is showed on the screen. I have tried couple of driver versions ( original, latest, middle version. ), also its happening on Win 7, 8, 8.1. I have played around almost every setting that could be changed. Nothing in event log.

The only way to fix this is to turn off the laptop / put it in sleep mode and then turn on from power button.

Can you advice on what could cause this ? Or where should i look for the problem ? It might be related to power options or VGA ? Anyone with same problem?

Thank you!

Hi all hope you clean help out... I have upgraded my baby to quad core, 8 gb memory, TWO 1tb drives, combined wifi/bluetooth, back lit keyboard, bluray drive, 3g modem,  4gb Intel memory module, Windows 7 64 bit.

My issue is that she works then if not in safe mode with network she freezes after about half hour! So have to restart but some times not even a click from drives?

She use to work faultlessly but about 4 months ago this started!

I suspect it might be due to heat?? When I fitted the quad I made sure I put new thermal paste down.

Hope some one can come up with a solution!

Thanks in advance.

Install XP FROM USB Flash TO USB Flash Dell Inspiron 910 Mini

I was given a Dell Inspiron 910 Mini notebook that had a bad SSD. I removed the SSD and am now trying to install XP on a USB Flash instead of buying a new SSD, but I have to install from a 2nd USB Flash because this latop has no CD/DVD drive.

I followed a few different tutorials, first making a copy of XP that is capable of installing on a USB drive: http://www.ngine.de/article/id/8
Second, copying the ISO to a 4GB USB drive using usb_prep8: http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/i [...] thumb.html
I have formatted the 2nd 8GB USB drive using HPUSBFW.exe as a NTFS drive.
When I boot the laptop with the XP Setup USB drive, I run txt based setup, it starts fine.
Setup shows the empty 8GB USB Drive as NTFS.
When I select the drive, hit enter, keep filesystem intact, I get a generic error saying that the drive is corrupt.
When I tried to format using setup, I get a slightly different generic error, but still says disk is corrupt and cannot format.
When I delete the partition, I can create a new one but cannot format the new partition, it says corrupt.
I have tried to format the empty drive as a FAT32 using HPUSBFW before starting XP setup, same errors.
As I have stated, my XP installation has been modified to install on USB Drives, and I have triple checked the 6 files I changed during that (the 3 .IN_ have all been repacked).
I made sure my ISO was saved properly in WINISO and mounted properly in D-tools before transfering to USB.
I have tried with different combinations of USB Flash Drives and USB Hard Drives of varying sizes.
I am using XP Pro SP3 March 2011 build.
Please help solve the disk corruption error as I do not want to spend any money on this if possible.

Dell Studio 1737 High CPU Temperature

I have a Dell Studio that I purchased on 3/9/2009.  It is a great computer.

I for various reasons decided to upgrade the processor from the T4200 to the P9700.  I was amazed how easy the upgrade was.

  1. I removed the bottom panel
  2. Took off the heat sink and cleaned it by wiping off the old paste and blowing out the fins
  3. Then I removed the old CPU by twisting the black screw.
  4. I installed the new CPU.
  5. Applied High Quality Thermal Grease and spread it with a credit card.
  6. I put the heat sink back on.
  7. Then I put the bottom panel back on

When I first started it up, I used Speed Fan 4.41 to check the CPU temps.  They were 42 C.  Which is what I would expect when idling.

I considered the job well done.

However a few hours later My wife said the computer was running slow and I checked the CPU temps and they were at 62C cruzing the internet and using outlookConfused.

I then down loaded Intel's diagnostic utility and it said that the temp after a cpu test was 10C below maximum and passed the test.

I also took the time and upgraded the BIOS from A04 to A08.

As I write this the CPU temp is at 50C and the CPU is hovering at 2%.

I wish I knew what the T4200 temp was before I removed it.

Any suggestions or comments?  I would love to get more data and get some idea of other people's CPU, Current Load, and TEMP.

Did I miss anything?  Should I be worried?

Inspiron N5110: Replacing HD w/ SSD

$

After getting an error message "PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable" -I'm finding I can no longer get my laptop to boot up.

This problem had been ongoing for the past few months, sometimes it would boot up (and any number of power-off/power-on attempts). Until today when I tried a bunch of times...  It would just never boot up without going to that error screen.

I've already checked the boot options and that is/was as it should be.  Also, whenever it wouldn't boot up - you could hear the HD clicking.  This same clicking sound would occur just before it would crash.

So, with ^that - I figured I might as well try to upgrade to a SSD.

I have made a back-up of my system and also made a repair disc.

If I can do this / if it's possible: which SSD could I purchase to replace the one I currently have (a Samsung, SATA, 1000 GB - & I could probably get by with half that many GBs)?

How would I go about restoring / transferring the OS to the SSD? (if asking more than 1 question is frowned upon - I can start a new topic).

Turn off my XPS 13 Trackpad

Seriously sick of randomly clicking because my hands are too fat.  I know that my previous dell had an option where it would automatically shut off the trackpad if an external mouse was detected.  Is that available on the 13?

Wireless and Bluetooth keep disconnecting

Hi, I´ve bought a Inspiron 14 3421 and I´m having problems with wireless and bluetooth. When using Microsoft Sculpt mouse the internet keeps disconnecting several times, like each 10 or 15 minutes. I see the wireless networks doesn´t disconnect only internet connectivity is lost, Windows indicates limited connectivity. Also the mouse itself stops working, not so frequently. I had a couple of blue screen too, error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.

The laptop came with Windows 8, and I installed 8.1. Now it has  8.1 update. I bought the mouse after install 8.1, so I don´t know if it had this problem with original SO.  The driver version for Dell 1703 Wifi + Driver is the latest, and I already reinstalled it. Mouse driver is updated, from Microsoft´s website.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Carlos

BIOS Password on Dell Inspiron 15-3521

Well... I know no one will believe me but... I am a digital forensics examiner a few miles from the Dell HQ in Round Rock and I have an Inspiron 15-3521 that belongs to a missing teenager and it is locked with a BIOS password. From what I see on the net it may no longer be possible to get to the Motherboard and jump out the BIOS password. Is that true?Must one find the chip itself and jump out a couple of pins? Is there any way short of an expensive and time consuming court order to get rid of that password?

This kid is in danger. He is with much older people who lured him away and we need to find him.

Thank you,

Mike Adams

Dell XPS 15 Will not boot into Windows 8.1

I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop that I've had for a little over a year. I've recently had a problem where the laptop claims it cannot find the boot device. I've run the diagnostics, and it did not find anything wrong with the hard drive. I was wondering how you are supposed to repair Windows 8 without a restore disk and without booting the operation system.

Windows 8 Key provided automatically by the BIOS during installation?

Hey all,

I am fixing a Windows 8 laptop for a client. It's an Inspiron 3521. I can't find the Windows 8 product key, but according to this link:

https://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130709075601AA3xAlw

The windows 8 key will be provided by the BIOS upon installing Windows 8. Is this true?. Another question too. I have a "any version" Windows 8 install disc I got from the Microsoft website.

I am wondering if I could use it to install Windows 8 on this laptop, as I don't have the system discs that your supposed to burn when you get the laptop brand new, the client gave me nothing. Thanks in advance.

Mouse problem

I received Dell Mouse that had red laser light at the bottom. After a few months, that red light is no more. I reported that to Dell and they sent a new mouse but the same thing - no laser red light, even though I tried different USB ports to connect the mouse. What does that mean? Is that red light at the bottom of the mouse necessary? Does that indicate a problem with the USB port module inside the computer? Should I have it fixed by Dell or just leave it alone? Thanks. Drivers for Wifi - Vostro 1550

$

i just bought a new Vostro 1550 from a local vendor without OS. I purchased a W7 licence separately and installed it on my system. I am having trouble finding drivers for the the following three on

1. BCM43142A0

2. Network Controller

3. PCI Simple Communications Controller

I have no clue about 1 and 3.

About 2, since I have already installed the LAN driver and am able to use it, Network Controller would refer to the Wifi controller. I have tried all drivers coming under network on the download drivers page on Dell's support site but none of them is working. All of them are saying that the necessary hardware has been ejected/not installed.

Any help in guiding to the right drivers would be greatly appreciated. Am using Win 7 64 Bit. Link for drivers is below.
