Dell XPS 15 (9530) Flawed mSATA Setup

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. However, Intel clearly documents that you need a partition equal in size to the system memory for Intel Rapid Start to work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fmotherboards%2Fdesktop%2Fsb%2Frapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi1.pdf&ei=m1OHUpzGAdPpkAfE8YGIDg&usg=AFQjCNH7Rh6iQN6hSR0Ry3oBF6kGmxgjaA&sig2=e--yKMT7hoApFUI_7kMyEA This makes sense because what it is doing is writing an image of system memory to the SSD.

Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.

Dell laptop 1555 won't eject my DVD.  No manual eject, only can eject disk by going Start --- Computer --- CD Drive, then right click to get eject option.  Disk tries to eject but is clearly stuck.  No clear way to remove drive.  Anyone have to deal with this?  Suggestions?

Hello,

I'm looking for a solution for fingerprint reader on Vostro 5470, Windows 7 64-bit.

Is there anyway to make windows detect the fingerprint reader?
I've reinstalled the driver from dell downloads. Biometric is there on control panel, but it cannot detect the device.

I tried the validity FMA software, but it won't detect the fingerprint reader as well.

Thanks.

Laptop Restarts after shutdown

Hello

I have an XPS L502X laptop and every time I shutdown it restarts straight away. I recently updated the nvidia drivers though this was a week ago and this problem started 3 days ago. I did have an error regarding the AC power adapter something like "AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined" but that hasn't come back and it was only the one time.

I've looked for solutions but none have worked or they just don't exist like the power management tab in HD Audio Controller. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Steve

External fingerprint reader recommendations

I have a Precision M4700 laptop. Back when I ordered this, I chose not to go with the integrated fingerprint reader because I'd be primarily using the system while docked and the lid closed. I figured it'd be best to look for an external usb fingerprint reader at a later time.

It's now that time. Anyone have any recommendations or experience with external fingerprint readers on Dell systems running Win8.1? I have the Dell Access software installed, so it'd be nice if the reader was compatible with that.

I've had my laptop now for about a week and the space bar is having the same problem. In fact, I dislike the whole keyboard. It's too easy to keep hitting number lock instead of backspace as well.

Hi Dell,

I bought Inspiron 15R 5537 in August this year, and I found the laptop has a problem that it can't turn on when adapter plugged in. I can only turn on the laptop with battery.

My laptop is new and I think the adaptor is ok, i also tried to get the battery out and only connect the adaptor, it is the same, i can't turn on.

I searched the forum and found someone else has the same issue with the same laptop, but don't know to how deal with.

     Is it a hardware issue?

     How to resolve it?

     Thanks

Dell XPS 15 9530 Firmware problem discovery and solution to the problem...

This post is in regards to the BIOS/UEFI update A03 that is released on Dells driver and update page.

I flashed this firmware update thinking it would be better, obviously the higher version number, however, you will notice that upon upgrading, you will notice that your touchscreen will no longer work. I spent almost 2 hours deducing what could have been the issue after I had updated some other drivers from Dell and Intel as well. I began combing through the logs in Windows 8.1 and noticed there were problems loading drivers for the NFC and the Touchscreen. So, I began uninstalling update by update until I decided to boot into my Linux OS to determine whether the problem was a driver issue with Windows, or a system wide problem.

Sure enough, I booted Linux, touched the screen and nothing...so I naturally went back to the Dell website to look for the A02 version of the BIOS/UEFI update to downgrade. Couldn't find it, so I searched on my best friend, google, and found a link for the old A02 (current version), and downloaded it. I then began the installation, it will tell you that Dell doesn't like to downgrade, but I ignored it since the upgrade process didn't clear the entire ROM just a portion, plus the EC. So, once I downgraded and reboot, touch screen works!

I hope that helps those who did the same thing as I did.

XPS15 - Changing mSATA SSD to RAID1 data partition instead of Intel Rapid Start

Hello,

I just got an XPS15 9530 with the 1TB HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD that is supposedly used for the Intel Rapid Start / Rapid Storage Technologies.

I have taken partition backup images of all partitions using the USB based Clonezilla Live tool before I first booted into Windows and did the initial configuration process.

Now I am thinking about disabling the Intel Rapid Start/Storage and instead using the 32GB mSATA SSD for creating a 32GB RAID 1 array using the SSD and an appropriately sized HDD partition.
Obviously this is going to give me a longer bootup time, but I would gain a 32GB data partition that is protected against data loss by a RAID1 setup in case the HDD should fail, which is a lot more important to me.

Ideally, I would like to encrypt that RAID1 data partition with Truecrypt and also access it from a Linux system which I want to install on the machine as well.

As far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), there is the choice between setting up the RAID1 either using a lower level RAID functionality that is part of the BIOS or using Windows 8 storage spaces.
Since I want to be able to access the data from Linux as well, anything that requires Windows is a no-go.

I have already reduced the original Windows 8.1 OS partition to a size of about 150GB, so there is enough free space on the HDD.

The Windows OS is still pretty much untouched, so I wouldn't mind doing this in a way that requires setting up the OS once again from scratch using my images, but I would prefer a way in which the current Windows system will "survive".

This is the basic idea, but I have some questions about the details that I am not yet clear about:
1. How do I set up the RAID1 between the SSD and the HDD partition in a way that it becomes accessible from Linux? What settings do I need to change in the BIOS, and how do I access the management interface for the low level BIOS RAID functionality? Do I boot into Windows and use the Intel Storage Manager to create the RAID1? Or would that create the RAID in a way that I will be locked into Windows again to access the partition?

2. Will I run into problems setting up Linux (probably some Ubuntu flavour) as a second OS due to the fact that this is a GPT rather than a traditional MBR setup? It was no problem accessing the system from a Linux based Clonezilla Live system, but that was booted from a USB stick, not installed on the HDD.

3. Windows offers a "Reset Windows" feature that somehow wipes everything and restores the original state the way it was before I first turned on the laptop. I assume that it has a separate bootable partition with a recovery system and a system image for that, but am not sure about the details (which partition(s) is the recovery system and the image on). Once I am done, will this still work or will my Clonezilla images be the only way to restore that original state?

Thank you,

MSA

Dell Inspiron N5050

Recently, my laptop, upon starting up beeped 5 times over and over.  I read that this meant a problem with the CMOS battery.  My date and time are still perfectly fine though.  I then ran diagnostics and it came up with a hard drive error code 2000-0142 validation 50805.

So my computer is trying to tell me that I need a new CMOS battery and hard drive?  Everything seems to be working fine.  It hasn't crashed at all or anything like that.  The only reason I'm looking into this is because the 5 beeps never stop.

Dell Vostro 3500 overheating

Hi people,

This is my first post so here it is:  I am an owner of a Dell Vostro 3500 since more than 3 years now and it just went out of warranty at the end of January of this year.  Unfortunately for me after that I noticed it was overheating and now it shut downs in less than 5 minutes after turning it on.  Is there a way for me to know what exactly is the problem since I am pretty sure the issue is with the cooling fan (I can hear it making weird noises through the vents).  I just want to know if it is indeed the fan which is causing this problem before trying to replace it by myself (and with the help of the useful user manual that I found online).  Any advice would be helpful Smile

Thank you

Laptop not charging

I have a Dell Inspiron 14r and for some reason, the laptop will not charge. It is running on a 90W power supply, but says it does not recognize the power adapter type and that it will not charge. However, when I use my roommate's 65W power adapter, it will charge, even though it notifies me that it will charge slower. I don't know what to do, and I've read a few forum posts about this issue. One suggestion was to flash the BIOS, but I am not sure how to go about doing this. Also, I just had the charger port replaced.
