Dell 17R N7110 Windows XP 32 Bit Professional. Nvidia Geforce GT 525M driver required

Hi,

I've managed to get Windows XP pro running on my 17R, dual boot with Windows 7. Except I don't have a driver for the Nvidia graphics card, the Geforce GT 525M.

There is a generic Nvidia driver for XP which covers the GT 525M, but the driver hardware Subsys ID doesn't match the hardware installed in the laptop, so the driver doesn't install.

Has anyone managed to install a driver for Windows XP, or even modifed the generic driver to match the hardware IDs on the laptop (is that even possible ?).

For those curious how I managed to install Windows XP ...

I used a Windows XP install disk (SP2) I bought new on eBay.
I side loaded SP3 (which I just downloaded) and the ACHI disk drivers onto a fresh disk (I extracted those from the Windows 7 driver file), based on the install disk (if you don't do this you will experience a blue screen just before installation really gets started).
Most of the Windows 7 drivers also support XP, so that makes life easy. Except the Ethernet control which I found on the web by searching for an XP driver (it has installed correctly, but I use wireless anyway so I've not tested it)
Quickset and similar software I've not found a version for XP yet. Although I could just load a version, I'm nervous to do this blindly when I don't know if the hardware will match.

So if I could just get the Nvidia driver installed, that would be good. Actually the Intel graphics driver loads fine, so I don't notice that the Nvidia driver isn't present. The laptop is totally usable the way it is. But I still want the Nvidia driver of course.

Driver update needed after 8.1 Update?

Installed Windows 8.1 Update on my XPS 12 (9Q33) when it was released on Tuesday and I've noticed that the Synaptics touchpad enhancements fail to work (system tray icon vanishes, multifinger gestures don't work, cursor speed is slow, etc) upon resuming from sleep, but resuming from hibernate is fine.  Don't know if this is a driver issue or a Microsoft issue.  Currently running the 17.0.15.3 touchpad driver released on January 29 2014 and updated the system BIOS to A05 following install of the 8.1 Update on Tuesday.

M6500 freezes

Three times so far today (and it's only 9:30 in the morning) my brand new M6500 has locked up.  The video is completely frozen (no updates to clock or any other dynamic video).  Keyboard and mouse are unresponsive.  Pressing the power button works only if I hold it down to force a power off.  Despite this, the disk light is still going, indicating some activity.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can figure out the problem?

Special note: To try to find a common cause for this problem, members of this thread are maintaining a spreadsheet with their individual configurations.  You can access the spreadsheet at the link below.  Please take care as this spreadsheet is fully editable.

Dell Inspiron 14z - plugged in, not charging - charger light is green - help?

My Dell Inspiron 14z (N411z) is less than a year old. I received it in June or July of 2012. Several days ago, after I exited a game I had been playing, I noticed that the battery was very low, even though it had been plugged in for hours. It said it was "plugged in, not charging" and it was at 7%. I decided to leave it be for a little while, thinking that maybe my laptop got overheated while I was playing the game. But it was still like that after an hour or two, so I tried restarting, then shutting off and on again, but neither of these things worked. I tried shutting it off and taking out the battery and leaving it alone for a few hours, then putting the battery back in, didn't help.

My father and I struggled with it while I tried to find solutions online. We struggled with the cords to see if there was some issue with the charger or wires, but my guess is that it must be the battery or computer if the charger has a green light (I assume that means it is working properly?). The information I found on various forums, including this one, was confusing and vague to me, and usually mentions a red or orange light flashing. I don't see any red lights on my computer or charger. I saw people saying that to fix my problem, I'd just have to take out the battery and put it back in, but I already tried that several times (I even take out the battery overnight now to let it rest and see if that helps - it has no effect as far as I can tell).

One suggestion was to reinstall my OS, which was Windows 7. I tried that, and it helped! But only for a short while. It charged up to 11% before going back to "plugged in, not charging." At the end of the end of the day, I followed another suggestion I'd seen in a forum: unplug the charger and let the computer die. I did that and took out the battery. The next morning, I put it all back in and it was charging again. This time it charged up to 9% before stopping.

I am currently using Ubuntu 12.10 as my main operating system. Yesterday, I installed Ubuntu over Windows (not necessarily because of the battery/charger issues, although I was hoping to see it work). It had no effect on the battery, which is still at 9%.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with my computer/battery/charger and how I can fix it?

Latitude e6530

So I bought this awesome looking dell latitude from this guy at the airport before he caught a flight, right after I got off of a flight and he told me it would be simple to restore the computer.  Problem is that he has a password on the computer and I don't have his information. Now I'm starting to think that maybe I got robbed of my 700 bucks and maybe the computer is not legit.  Is there any way possible that I can restore it without the password.  Someone help me please, I used my school money for this computer and now I am without a computer and 700 bucks possibly, and this could be the death of my college career if I don't get it working soon because I have assignments due in the next couple of days. Please if anyone can help me factory restore without the password, don't hesitate to let me know how. I really need this. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

XPS 9530 touch screen stops responding (how to fix)

Hello, I figured I'd share a (not so obvious) solution to a stupid little problem I have been experiencing with my new Dell XPS 15 - 9530 touch screen laptop.

After a period of time, the screen would stop responding until a sleep, restart, or until I disabled and re-enabled the touch screen in device manager.

TURNS OUT - Dell is shipping these out with a kind of wonky setting...  Go your device manager (Google it if you don't know what it is)

THEN - goto "Human interface devices" and double click on the "USB input device" - if you have more than one, disconnect any external mice you may have attached.

FINALLY - goto the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"...

This has so far solved my issue...  and hopefully saves someone from a tech support call.

*******UPDATE - I had my system replaced and for some reason even with these modifications I was starting to have the screen problems again (after a long time perfect performance)...  SO - just to be safe, go back in to the device manager and turn off those same power management settings under "universal serial bus controllers"

The ones for mine (with all external devices disconnected) were Both "Generic USB Hub" and all 3 "USB Root Hub" devices (Including USB Root Hub xHCI)...  it ended up being all of them.

To reiterate, I disabled the power management on the internal USB hubs that power the mouse, keyboard and likely the touch input part of the screen.

SO FAR - I have had no further problems...  I had to sacrifice some battery life, but I no longer am poking my screen to death in anger.  lol

Dell studio 1435 model. BIOS not detecting external USB DVD writerto

Hi, I have dell studio 1435 laptop. Service tag :<ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>. It has latest BIOS. The BIOS is not detecting the external USB DVD writer. I am not able to boot from external DVD. I escalated to Dell tech support. It was escalated to highest lever possible. The escalation team told me that the laptop does not support the booting from the external DVD. In the BIOS there are options to boot from USB storage and CD/DVD. It seems the tech support team misleading the customers. It seems to me that there could be bug in the BIOS or design defect in this model. Can some one from dell technical team explain this. I am getting the worst kind of tech support from Indian tech support team

Adding SSD Hard Drive to DELL Inspiron 1564

Hi Dell's Member

I have a DELL Inspiron 1564 and now I am thinking about adding an SSD to speed up it.

I found some guides on internet that they remove the DVD Drive and insert an SSD there with a base device (not sure what is its name, the base works like a HDD base, they put the SSD on the base).

So, should I do it too? and where should the HDD for Operating System connect to? To official HDD port or on DVD Drive port? Are they different in speed for these ports?

I am really want to speed my machine up. It got 8GB RAM already.

Inspiron 15 3521 Has very annoying keys and space bar.

I have had it for a couple weeks now and it is very touch and go with the key responses, especially the space bar. I am a fairly quick typer but I still need to stare at the keyboard. when I look up, random words are stuck together becauseof the problem. See what I mean? I have some prettyheavy keystrokes but still have problems with missing letters and finding the sweet spot of the space bar. I have enrolled in online university and have tons of papers to write. I cannot handle it. What can be done? It doesn't feel like a sensitivity issue because I will press the space bar at one point and it wont work, move over a 1/2" and it works.

Inspiron 17R 5720 - Weird things

Hey everyone!

I got an Inspiron 5720 (i3 CPU, GeForce 630M) and for the past 1-2 months I've been having some problems with it. First it just didn't turn on sometimes (taking out the battery, hlding the power button for a while, then putting the battery back always helped though). Now this thing happens every second day, and also very rarely the laptop just turns off unexpectedly.

It didn't seem like a serious issue though, so I thought the BIOS might be the issue (I'm using the A17 one). So I just downloaded the A18 to upgrade it. I ran the .exe, laptop shuts down and then nothing happens... Power LED is on, and that's it. Can't turn it on or off, once again I need to remove the battery to bring it back to life.

So any suggestions what might be the problem? Other than those things, the laptop works well.

Thanks in advance!

1764 restarting after a few seconds of boot - but booting OK after 20-30 tries

Hi everybody,

My Inspiron 1764 keep restarting after I try to boot. Basically I hit power the fan starts and in a few seconds it stops. If I do this repeatedly the time until it shuts down get bigger. At the 15th power up I can even get to see the windows logo.

As mentioned in the title if I do this enough times (never the same number) it finally boots and everything works fine. Even if i shut it down it will automatically boot again. The problem comes up when I shut it down and try to boot the next day.

I tried:

-Booting with and without battery (2 different batteries to be sure)

-Removed the battery and held the power button for 30 or more seconds to "drain" (as I saw on the forums)

-Cleaned the fans to make sure it is not an overheating issue

Please help out with any ideas I can try. Or if you encountered this let me know what the issue was (hardware probably)

Cheers

Vostro 3450 Wifi issues

My daughter's Vostro 3450 has recently developed an issue that it loses connection to the wifi AP - the wifi strength icon has the circle turning when this happens.  It is not the wifi ap as there are other devices nearby that do not exhibit this behavior.  On one occasion when this happened the laptop was beeping according to my daughter.  Should I log a service call or is there something I can look at to determine what is happening?

Thanks for your assistance.

Hard Drive partition not accessible after reinstall

$

Laptop: Dell Latitude E5530

OS: Windows 8

Hi Everyone,

I recently suffered the dreaded "automatic repair loop", and after trying and failing on all options I found online, I gave up and ended up having to do a re-install. Sad

Now before the re-install I had 2 partitions C:\ and D:\ , D had all my data while C had the OS and apps. I re-installed the OS using the Dell tool and was expecting that just as in older windows versions, the re-install would not mess with my other drives. Sadly now I can not see the D drive in my computer under "devices and drives". When I go to "Disk Management" Under "computer management" the partition shows as a "Healthy OEM Partition", but I cant access it. When I try to right click it the popup menu only has an option for "help". while the C partition gives me all the options.

When I boot from a Linux USB stick, I can see and access both partitions. So the question is how do I bring it online in windows?

Thanks in advance.

l501x fan malfunction error and solution

Hey,

After not turning on my laptop for a while (a month) I had an issue of my fan keep running full speed making a lot of noise.

After rebooting my computer in order to see if the problem will be solved I saw a BIOS message that I didn't manage to read completely, the message was something about a malfunction and that I need to press FN+X.

After pressing FN+X the fan started working normally again.

Does someone knows what was the problem? It is fixed but I wonder what it was...

Thanks in advance!
