Inspiron 5537 LED failure?

$

I received delivery of this laptop last Friday on the 14th of February. Since then I've noticed the screen dimming and what looks like a row of spotlights along the bottom of the screen. This has happened a few times out of the blue. So far I've been able to fix it by putting the laptop to sleep or into hibernation.

Can you tell me if this is LED failure?

New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

Just recently my screen does not auto rotate with Windows 8.1 installed. The button does not work to unlock the auto rotate. When trying to flip the laptop the screen does not rotate.

Very frustrated as I use this feature very often.

All my drivers are up to date.

M6800 AutoCAD Map 3D Locks or Shuts Down

Just started installing software on the new M6800 and AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 only stays running for about a minute then states there's an error and has to shut AutoCAD down, or the program just closes with no error windows or anything, just back to them main Windows screen. There is a patch for AutoCAD that I have installed but it doesn't make a difference. I am running this AutoCAD on my M6500 with no issue. To resolve this I have re-installed AutoCAD several times including downloading a new copy, completely cleaning out every AutoCAD file, to re-formatting the drive re-installing Windows 7 Pro then re-installing AutoCAD just to get the same result. I have also tried turning off the hardware acceleration in AutoCAD, none of these fix the issue. There doesn't seem to be any common command that causes the errors. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dell Precision M90 Windows 7 upgratde & 2nd HD questions

Hi all,

I have dell precision M90 since more than one year now, I bought it with the following configuration:

2.33 GHz processor

4 GB RAM

Nvidia Quardor 2500

150 GB HD

the machine is a mazing, but lately i decided to upgrade to windows 7 and i have two main questions related to each other.

did any one made a successful upgrade two windows 7 with M90 cause i checked over the Internet and i see a lot of contradicting opinions about that!!

The second question is regarding the storage, 150 GB is already not much with windows XP and all my software installed, so I'm really worried about the space when installing windows 7. i thought of adding a second drive, but sounds like a long process, of removing the media pay and getting a cradle for the new drive; which is not sold where I'm currently. so is there is any other way to install a second drive, if not, would you guys advice of changing the drive lintierly with bigger one, keeping in mind that the only ones i can find in the market is 5400 RPM and the one i have currently is 7200 RPM ?

so you suggestions regarding the correct action would be really appreciated ..

My experience with XPS 12 Windows 8 software issues

$

I think I'm one of the earlier adopters of XPS 12, and even though I'm experiencing significantly lesser issues than what the others have brought up, there are three persistent ones that will rear their ugly heads once in awhile... Two of them are simply consuming about 30% of the CPU but don't appear to be doing anything, and this makes the fan spin up till annoying speeds. The only way out is to restart the PC so that the fan will run at its usual quieter speed. The third actually causes a BSOD...

My machine is the higher-spec-ed i7 + 8 GB + 256 GB SSD one, and if it's worth mentioning, I'm running it with the latest version of BitDefender.

So, does anyone know if these are known issues with Windows 8 that affect other PCs, or are they really something to do with Dell's choice of drivers/configuration?

1) Boot Configuration Editor (bcdedit.exe)
I'm only booting up Windows 8 and haven't made any fanciful changes to startup items or startup options, so why does this kick in once in awhile?

2) Volume Shadow Copy
This seems to be started by the regular maintenance activity, not sure why is this running too since I'm not using the File History feature. I've read online that it's best not to manually terminate it, so how can I go about ensuring that it either completes quickly, or not start in the first place?

3) *The BSOD one* Wireless connection not working, putting it to standby and resuming triggers a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD
Sometimes, the wireless connection will refuse to work, and if I follow this by a quick standby/resume, it will BSOD with the above error.

I've my fair share of criticism for the Cypress touchpad drivers and I know there has been other complaints about that too, so here's hoping we'll get better drivers... I'm sticking with the touchscreen always, unless I require some precise mouse movements (e.g. small buttons)

My dell xps l701 x 15 inch screen just full of faults

Screen - poor quality. Images are very pixelated. I have downloaded and upgraded all up to date drivers over the phone with technical and it's still very poor quality

Standby - when the screen goes blank after not using it for a little while, I can't get it back until I pull the power cord out and the battery and restart the machine.

Always HOT - the machine even when switched off and closed I can hear it boot up occasionally and the fan running in full speed.
When I use it the fan is constantly running even when I keep it we'll ventilated. The machine does get so hot sometimes even the keys on the keyboard are warm. The fan has already been replaced and the problem still persists

DVD player - this has failed and has been replaced. The one I currently have sometimes doesn't register the disc and I have to eject and reinsert it until it registers.

Sound - this is intermittent. The sound has gradually got lower in volume. I used to play iTunes at full blast and hear it upstairs, now when playing it I struggle to hear it in the same room. It almost sounds like the subwoofer has failed

Won't start up - this is ongoing. When I shutdown the machine and try and load it again it just won't start up. Sometimes takes about an hour of fiddling and trying it finally starts up. Dell technical have sent somebody with a new motherboard and they have fitted that and now it won't start at all. They are coming again in two days time to try another motherboard just incase the new one was faulty. Let's wait and see

Speed issues - the machine just runs slow, windows has been reloaded and the problem still persists. I have had dell install a bigger hard drive as one was over half full. I have had the ram increased to the maximum possible. And it still just runs slow.

Bluetooth - this has come disconnected inside the machine twice now and was reconnected again today. So if it ever starts again at least the Bluetooth works.

Wifi - this drops out a couple of times an evening.

So since Monday it's been dead, dell have arrived today, a nice lady but she couldn't fix it. She is coming back Friday. Let's hope she can fix it then we can cake the list above

This list is not exhaustive but my fingers are this evening, so that's all for now

Let's see what dell can do to help me

Brand new laptop that doesn't work...

I am sick and tired of the horrible customer service at Dell. I now know why it is not possible to reach Dell Corporate HQ's by phone. Their phones would be blown up. I purchase computers for students in Uganda and the only reason I continue to purchase Dell Products is because they offer interest free financing.

I spent 7 hours on the phone today with Dell customer service agents, all the way to a manager, and tech services agent. I was disconnected after long waits 5 times, and spent at least 2 hours in total on hold.

No one at Dell can think outside of the box and try to help a customer. I am going to send a letter to Michael Dell, but I wanted to post something here first. I am afraid I have made my last Dell Purchase.

Dell XPS 14z (L412z) Screen Replacement

Can anyone recommend a place to get another LCD screen for the Dell XPS 14z (L412z) model? I am tempted to just buy a Lenovo laptop if I cannot find it anywhere else. I've checked and placed orders to more than one company and have been issued a refund due to the product not being in stock. $299 from Dell is just considerably unreasonable at this time for me and I would probably rather put that towards another manufacturer's laptop.

Thanks for any help.

E6540 Inadequate Thermal System! ATTN: Dell

$

Okay, so I have decided to revise this thread to accommodate the recent interest by customers who own this notebook.

Nutshell Explanation: The E6540 and its "one-fan" design is totally inadequate for properly cooling the i7-4800MQ and the AMD HD 8790M. The advertised specifications (2.7Ghz) are unobtainable during realworld and benchmark testing scenarios. The cooling system just can not handle the thermal footprint of the CPU/GPU.

Long Explanation: I have spent a lot of time and effort in researching this problem. Here are a few things I have discovered. First, Dell has a history with producing systems that can't handle the thermal requirements of the chips installed inside of them. One would think that Dell would learn from their mistakes... Second, the Latitude E series is probably an "end of life" model. Dell jumped the gun on the E6540 and failed to do the engineering. They assumed that the E6530 design could accommodate a CPU/GPU combination with a higher TDP than it's predecessor (E6530). Likewise, the E6540 was one of the first enterprise-grade Haswell notebooks. So I'm sure the pressure was really on at Dell to push this out of the door. These machines are inherently flawed. DOA! We have been scammed. For those of you who have upgraded to the 2.8Ghz model. You really got scammed! You will never be able to use that horsepower.

I have been a 15+ year Apple customer. This has been my first PC in a long time. Frankly, I'm very disappointed.

Now. Let me go ahead and leave a few links here that reference other forums/sources that discuss this issue:

Dell Vostro 1520 New Battery Problem

$

Hi,

The old battery in my Dell Vostro 1520 died.

I purchased a new one from the market, and plugged it into the laptop.

In the first run, the battery showed 75% remaining.

But whenever I plugged the ac adapter, it showed Charging for the first minute, and then suddenly indicated it is not charging the battery.

So I continued to run the battery without power, and it ran smoothly without any problem until it showed 15% remaining.

I charged the battery for some considerable time, and then powered on the laptop.

To my surprise, I saw that the battery showed 2% remaining and then all of a sudden it fell to 0% remaining.

And then it starts to abruptly shut down whenever I start the laptop.

Can anyone please help me out here?

Please note the battery is  brand new.

Thanks and Regards,

Bhupendra

Inspiron 11 3000 Series (3137) 8gb RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade the ram on the newly released inspiron 11 3137. The laptop has one dimm slot that is also user accessible. It is currently only shipping with 2gb of ram. I realize the manual states it can support up to 4gb of ram, but has anyone tried adding a single 8gb stick?

It comes with win8 64 bit, and packs a recently released 4th gen haswell celeron. I'm thinking it may support an 8gb stick, but don't want to order without confirmation that someone has gotten it to work.

connecting laptop to tablet as secondary display monitor

$

I have 2 Dell products - an XPS 15z laptop and a Venue 8 Pro tablet. I need a secondary monitor for some software I am running that requires a dual display environment. I looked online and saw that there is software to enable one to use an Apple or Android tablet as a secondary monitor, but difficult to find any for a Windows tablet. I called Dell to see if there was a way to run a cable from the laptop to the tablet to enable an extended display from my laptop and was told initially I could but then I couldn't because the tablet only has a micro USB port. However, I was wondering if I could use an adapter of a micro USB to HDMI and run a HDMI cable between the HDMI port on my laptop and the adapter on the tablet. This seems like it should work but wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. I feel like the Dell tech person didn't totally understand my question and not sure if it is possible or not to do this? Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks

Has someone noticed ghost images (screen burn-in) on Dell XPS 12 Duo?

I recently noticed ghost images on my Dell XPS 12 Duo. If a bright image on dark background stays on the screen for a couple of minutes and then I switch to somewhat dark background I can clearly see the previous image on the screen for some time before it fades away. Once I noticed it I started spotting even more subtle ghost images. I even managed to capture it in a picture with a low-end digital camera - http://imgur.com/a/RIYff (notice the tray icons clearly seen in the Win 8 start screen and even the facebook ad is visible). It is far more clear when you look at the actual screen and not on a picture. I already arranged replacement laptop (as I had other issues with this one) but yesterday I read news about mass defects in Apple's Retina MacBooks ( http://www.ibtimes.com/print/macbook-pro-retina-display-problems-apple-faces-class-action-suit-ghosting-issue-1129939 ) with practically the same issue. Now I wonder if it is possible that all Dell XPS 12 Duo screens have this problem.

So anyone else seeing this on his machine?

Latitude E5420 - need to do Factory Image Restore, but it is not accessible

Hi....

I have a Latitude E5420 running Windows 7 Home Premium.  I would like to do a Factory Image Restore.  I press F8 when I boot up, select Repair computer, select the keyboard, select the Admin user (me), and the recovery menu appears.  The problem is that there is no option to do a Factory Image Restore.

When I look at Computer Management > Disk Management, I see a Recovery Partition, 752 MB, Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition).  There is also a 39 MB OEM Partition, and the OS Partition.  I assume the Factory Image is on the Recovery Partition, but nothing I do gives me access to it.

I have read everything I can find online and on dell.com with no success.

Can someone help me, please.

Thank you.

John

CPU Upgrade woes on my Inspiron 6400 - HELP!

So I got myself an Intel T7600 processor - tried to install it in my laptop. Re-assembled everything and tried to boot up the laptop. The laptop starts briefly for about 3-4 seconds (LEDs light up), and it dies. Tried to start many times but no luck.

Disassembled everything, checked my CPU orientation to see if I installed wrongly. It was correct (triangle to triangle). Re-assembled everything, tried to start. No luck.

I put in back my old CPU, and the laptop works fine. I am on the latest BIOS (A17).

What did I do wrong? Did I just own myself? PLEASE help me, anyone!
