Wifi on Dell Latitude E5420

Hi,

Friends have given me their Dell laptop Latitude E5420, which has barely been used.

I am trying to get Wifi up and running on it but with little success. Others have tried, but they are not really very technical!

From basic research, it seems like i don't have any drivers for Wifi, and also a wireless card in whichever socket (I don't want a "dongle", so am happy to buy a card if needed).

However, I don't know how to check either of these as fact, and if there is anything else missing

- For the wireless card, I have looked in the Device Manager in control panel, but don't know what I'm actually checking for.
- For the Wifi driver, the Network Connections in control panel comes up with 3 options. Broadband connection (disconnected WAN Miniport (PPPOE), Broadband Connection 2 (Disconnected WAN Miniport (PPPOE) and Local Area Network (Network cable unplugged Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit Ethernet).

Please can someone help? I'm pretty sure the laptop is missing something(s), but not sure what, and how to check what is missing.

Also, what do I need to actually buy, and what can I download from the net or from the Dell website?

Many thanks for your help

Victor.

"DELLPLUS NO" HDD Option

If I order a system with no HDD and install one myself, how do I install what comes on a HDD from Dell (Windows, Dell utilities, etc.)? Is this possible? I see a "DELLPLUS NO" option for HDD so I guess that's no HDD? It reduces the price by just $50 so maybe excluding it is more trouble than it's worth?

Hard disk error 2000-0142

Hi,

My system suddenly stopped working.. I'm able to login, but nothing responds. When I ran Hardware Diagnostic test, it's below errors in hard-disk.

Error Code:  2000-0142

Validation 99872

MSG: Hard Drive 0 – S/N S2WZJA0C629726 Short self test unsuccessful

I entered this code along with the service tag (5TPGGS1) in the below page, http://www.dell.com/support/Diagnostics/us/en/19/

It's showing below message:

Critical Hardware Maintenance

Next steps: Fill out the order form below to order a free replacement part for failing parts. All replacement parts are covered by your warranty.

But I couldn't find any order form to fill in that page. I'm not sure whether my hard-disk is eligible for free replacement or not.

My laptop warranty status says it's expired in December, 2013

Can someone please advise me on the next steps to follow?

Thanks,

Ramakrishna.

Since I updated to Windows 8.1 my Inspiron 2020's Bluetooth is not working properly.  I have windows phone (Nokia), earlier it used to connect and transfer files easily when windows 8 was installed, but in Windows 8.1 it gets connected then disconnect in a seconds.

How to resolve this issue? Any Bluetooth driver update or something else? Please help.

Driver installation error, Vostro 3750

I am using a Vostro 3750 laptop with (legal) Windows 7 x64 Professional.

After installing the OS and the drivers everything seemed to be working. BUT I have experienced huge problems with the speed of the computer. I have worked with other laptops with similar configurations and this Dell Vostro 3750 seemed to be very slow (An MS word opening shouldn't take 35-45 seconds, right?) At that time the Windows Experience Index gave 4,6 for the processor (i7-2630QM 2.00GHz)

But let's not compare it with other computers. I thought I made a mistake during the driver installation process. So, I re-installed the operating system and the drivers. It worked, the computer was super fast as it should be and the Windows Experience Index gave 7.x for the processor.

Unfortunately, a month later I had to re-install my system. I had to re-install my computer 3+ times "to be lucky" and to get a working system with normal speed. I did exactly the same thing every single time. Seemingly, this driver is the problematic one: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-3750?driverId=PC7W1&osCode=W764&fileId=2967225788&languageCode=EN&categoryId=VI

T
here are 2 options: either the driver installation succeeds and I get a speedy system or it installs the driver and it seems to be working but it's insanely slow and the screen freezes for 0,5 seconds in every 5-15 sec.

My computer is 2 years old now, whever I reinstall my system, I have to do it 3-5 times and then one of them will good.

To make things even more complicated my motherboard, CPU, RAM have been replaced due to hardver errors. (Total death of the machine). Even after the replacement I have this weird issue with the driver.

I tried to install diffrent kinds of windows 7 (x64, x84, pro, home editions, sp1). I tried to install it from USB, DVD. (All of them were legal copies from MSDN)

The problem I'm experincing now, is that i have to reinstall my system and I did it ~8 times and I still haven't got my "lucky" one.

Could anyone give me some reasonable explonation what is going on? Because this current slow computer can not be used, even as a typewriter. (It's not able to follow my typing in MS word, and I'm not typing THAT fast :-) )

Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.

Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.

At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.

Can anybody help with this?

Studio laptop.  Great laptop, but several times now, when it has sat idle for a while, the keyboard and mouse stop working.  I am forced to power it off and back on.  All my power settings are set to "never".  What could be causing this?  Windows 7 Home premium.  No external devices.

Dell Venue 11 Won't Charge/Turn-On (out of the box)

$

I purchased a Dell Venue 11 on 12/24/13 and received it this past Saturday, the 28th.  I ordered the $499 version.  I was very satisfied with the item and found it comparable to the Windows Surface 2 Pro.  I took my time to install all my apps that I needed and to adjust my security settings so that I could log in remotely to my work servers.

Yesterday while I was doing work on my tablet, I noticed my battery was low.  So I plugged it in and continued to work.  However, the tablet turned off on me about 15 minutes later.  I thought maybe it didn't charge as fast as it pulls energy.  So I plugged it in to charge while it was off for almost 3 hours.  It still would not turn back on.  I was using the Dell charger that came with the tablet.  I tested the charge with other items that take the mini USB port and it charged them, fine.

I contacted Dell and after being transferred 5 times and dealing with a couple of representatives that clearly weren't familiar with this new product, I finally got someone from tech support to trouble shoot my tablet.  They first had me hold the power button for 10 seconds.  No luck.  Then they had me hold it for a minute.  Still nothing.  Then we did 2 minutes and tried to plug it in.  Needless to say, it still will not power on.

In addition to my tablet being a brick, I also ordered the Mobile Keyboard with it.  I received an email stating that I would not receive the keyboard until the end of January because it is'in production'.  Very bothersome because had I known this, I wouldn't have even bothered purchasing this item from Dell, altogether.

I am very disappointed in Dell that they would send me out a defective unit.  Further disappointed that I wasn't properly informed of the wait time on the keyboard.  And even more annoyed at Dell's unwillingness to compensate me for my troubles and the hours of wasted time that I spent installing items onto my tablet, the files that were on the tablet which are now lost and the 3 hours that I had to spend on the phone with them.  They would not offer me even a small credit for my troubles.  Had this been a different company, I know that wouldn't be the case.  I have been a long time purchaser of Dell products but going forward, I will have to think twice.  Yes they offer affordable solutions that are practical, but the experience with customer service and the lack of quality of products almost isn't worth the hassle.

New Alienware 17 sleeps after 2 hours of inactivity inappropriately.

Folks,

I just received my Alienware 17 laptop with Windows 8.0 Pro installed.  I checked-out the system, keeping track of problems encountered, and installed Windows 8.1 Pro.  The problem I'm having occurs both under Windows 8.0 and 8.1.

I use this laptop mainly as a media server and game system, with the lid shut and an hdtv connected via hdmi.  I have updated all of my power profiles to set the sleep- and hibernation timers to 0 (no sleep, no hibernation) but, after just under two hours of activity, my system goes to sleep.  Dell, when called, blames this on the operating system, this despite the fact that the problem doesn't affect the systems of all vendors (mainly Dell, Asus and Vaio, apparently).  Dell refuses to so much as open an issue.

On the Alienware support forum, I've received a number of "rah, rah Dell!" responses but nothing which helps.

Has anyone else encountered this?  Does anyone have a solution or circumvention?  Many thanks in advance for non-defensive replies!

Regards,
Jeff Broido

Websites not opening, but other internet applications such as skype, viber, messengers works fine

Hi Guys,

This is Nilesh, I really need help in this matter.

Since last week, its been observed on my Dell Inspiron 3521 i5 with 750 HDD, 4GB RAM(Service Tag# <Admin Note: removed per privacy policy~RK>), that inspite of using 10MBPS ethernet cable speed, the website doesn't open unless I restart the computer every time but other application, like skype video calling, viber works extremely great, files from torrent are also being downloaded great at a great speed.

The actions I have performed, so far -

1) The connection on the router - OK

2) Ethernet Cable RJ45 Connector was broken - Fixed.

3) Firewall Setting - ON (as default)

4) I restored the system as well.

5) Avast Anti-virus is installed on my PC, and its 24/7 ON and I manually also scanned my computer, and no threats found there as well.

6) My system is up-to-date, as I have downloaded couple of Dell software update applications on my 3521. So, it automatically updates new releases, and automatically restarts computer.

7) I have tried connecting my laptop directly with the cable coming from the wall socket too, still same problem.

Inspite of doing all this, the only problem Im' experiencing is, unable to open the website. I can open website but only when I restart my laptop, and that too for just 10 or 15 or 20 or 30 minutes at max. After that, again website issue arises. I mean, the websites stop opening after 20-30 mins.

Some of my friends, colleagues are suggesting me to get the laptop formated.

So, my request here is, should I really format my C drive? If no need, is there any other alternatives, please please please share.(but, before that, please read all the actions that I have performed on my 3521 so far to avoid duplication)

If other than all the actions above, and if I need to format my C drive, do let me know the steps for formating PC which I think will clean up the PC and start from the scratch. So, far I have taken the backup of my C drive on D drive.

I'd really appreciate your help in this matter, as its so frustrating. I hope you can understand my situation here.

Many thanks !

Nilesh

touch pad problems

Hi,

I have an Inspiron 1545 laptop, running window 7.

I keep having problems with my touch pad in that it is hard to control and I cannot always get it to go where I want it to because it is so light.

When this happened before (twice) my machine was under warranty so it was sorted through that.

Is there anyway I can fix this my self? I think Dell downloaded or updated drivers.

Laptop crash when using graphics card

$

Hi,

I have an XPS 15 L502X (december 2011) with these specs:

  • Intel Core i7-2670QM
  • 8GB RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • NVidia GeForce GT 540M
  • Windows 8.1

First of, I have also tested these issues on Windows 7 and Windows 8 (all of them 64 bit) and it also happens in those OSes.

Working (MS Office, programming, web development, browsing the internet, ...) on this laptop has no issues at all. Using the Intel HD Graphics has no problem either and the external display connections (mini display-port and HDMI) also work correct.

In game however, I have between 1 to 5 minutes (some games up to 5, others just a few seconds) before my PC crashes. When this happens, the sound goes crazy (seems like a low buzzer - though it is just the sound of the game going in a loop - coming through the speakers or the headphones), the screen stops on the frame it produced last and the laptop just freezes. Sometimes, I am able to go back to Windows, but this only for a few moments before the laptop completely freezes or goes into a blue screen (BSOD). The occasional time it gives a BSOD, one of the error messages was DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. The only way to get out of the freeze is by powering of the laptop with the power button.

When booted back to Windows, the Windows Event Viewer has no data about the crash except for the two events:

  • Error: The previous system shutdown at 22:01:59 on ‎2/‎02/‎2014 was unexpected.
  • Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

The time in the first error above refers back to approximately 5 minutes before, the time the game started. The second error (critical) is listed above the first, thus comes later (just a few seconds).

To be clear, this happens for legally bought games as downloaded games. The games for which this happens are these (but this list is most likely not exhaustive):

  • Dirt 3 (via Steam)
  • Hitman: Absolution (via Steam)
  • Assassin's Creed 3 (downloaded)
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (downloaded)

The issue is only occurring for the last 3 to 4 months now. Before this, all of these games worked without problems. I suspect it has something to do with the graphics card (NVidia), as it ONLY happens when the graphics card is taking a good load. The laptop gets moderately warm, but the cooling fan works as it should and just blows out the warm air. I also ran the DELL PC Diagnostics (those extended tests with the screen flickering and so on) and these revealed no problem.

I have formatted and re-installed Windows 8.1 yesterday and installed the latest versions of all drivers needed. Today I have tested both Dirt 3 as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and both crash, although I was able to play Dirt 3 for a few hours. A few hours later, the problems started again and now they come back within the usual time interval of 1 to 5 minutes.

I have had contact with NVidia Support, but cannot reach DELL support as my warranty has ended. My conversation with the NVidia support engineer is attached below.

What is the problem with this laptop? Is there any solution for it?

I hope to get an answer from both users as DELL Support Engineers.

Greetings,

Jens

Rahul: Hi, my name is Rahul. How may I help you?
Jens V: Hi, I'm having touble with a driver for my geforce GT540M
Jens V: When trying to play games like Hitman Absolution (and previously also with Assassin's creed 3), my laptop crashes after about 3 to 4 minutes of gameplay
Rahul: Do you play games in Ultra settings?
Jens V: No
Jens V: I tried turning down my video settings to low and ultralow
Jens V: In the past, there was no trouble playing both games
Jens V: But the last few months there is
Rahul: Okay, Is the laptop getting over heated by any chance?
Jens V: Not that I know, it warms up a little, but not extremely hot
Jens V: I Googled a lot for the issue, but there has never been a real satisfying answer.
Rahul: At times with the graphics card like this you may face issues while gaming, but do you get any error message on the laptop ?
Jens V: Sometimes, there is a blue screen (or whatever it is called in Windows 8).
Rahul: Let me know the Operating System (Windows XP/ Vista/ 7 / 8 ) with the version (32 or 64 bit).
Jens V: Windows 8 64 bit
Jens V: It's a Dell XPS 15 L502X
Rahul: What is the driver version installed on the laptop now?
Jens V: 331.82
Jens V: I re-installed it today and gave it another try, but it crashed again
Rahul: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/70740/en-us
Jens V: I'll give that one a try.
Jens V: Do you know by any chance this one fixes issues related to the problem?
Jens V: Because I already updated a few times in the last few months
Rahul: Let me explain you about the possible reasons for the issue you are facing
Rahul: There are several factors that can contribute to system instability. Since the graphic card is always drawing to your screen, Windows will often report the graphics card or its drivers as the problematic device after a system error. In most cases, the problem is caused by another device or component in your system such as
Jens V: Sure.
Rahul: 1. Corrupted drivers 2. Issue could due to the OS. 3. Or, issue could be due to the other hardware components like motherboard, processor or system memory. 4. Application specific issue. 5. Defective graphics card.
Jens V: Mmh. Okay.
Jens V: But I'm not sure that's the case here.
Jens V: A few weeks back I installed an additional Windows 7 64 bit in dual boot with this Win8
Jens V: I used to latest drivers at that moment, but the crashes persisted
Rahul: Did you try flashing the BIOS on the motherboard?
Jens V: No
Jens V: I just search for a picture of my BSOD, the error I sometimes get (it's not always the same) is DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.
Rahul: Okay,
Jens V: Any suggestions for that?
Rahul: I am checking please stay on line
Jens V: okay
Rahul: Thank you for your patience
Rahul: Installing the drivers may not fix the issue you have, but I would suggest you to check if you can flash the BIOS on the laptop for the motherboard
Jens V: I'll check at the DELL website
Jens V: It looks like I'm running the latest version of BIOS updates from the DELL website
Rahul: That's fine even if you have the latest BIOS, I would suggest you to re flash it once
Jens V: Oh okay.
Jens V: I'll search how to do that.
Jens V: I assume this will require me to reboot my laptop. Will I be able to contact you (specifically you) again?
Rahul: Yes, please come back on line and ask for me
Jens V: Okay. Then I'll try this now.
Jens V: Thanks anyway!
Rahul: You are welcome
Rahul: You have a Good day ahead

Rahul: Hi, my name is Rahul. How may I help you?
Jens V: Hi Rahul, I flashed my BIOS again
Jens V: And installed the updated driver you gave me
Jens V: I just tried to run the game, and about 3 minutes in it crashed again
Rahul: I am sorry about this, Did you get the laptop per installed with Win 8 OS ?
Jens V: No, it had Windows 7 on it, but there are drivers and updates for Win 8 on the Dell website
Jens V: But in windows 7 the issues were there too.
Rahul: You have tried installing a different OS, installed multiple drivers, checked with the settings and you still have the same issue
Jens V: Yes
Rahul: I would suggest you to Run the System memory test and the CPU test and check
Jens V: I installed Win 7 about three weeks ago just to check if the issue was Win 8 related
Jens V: Also did those already. All came back clean
Rahul: Okay, I would suggest you check with the laptop manufacturer on this once
Jens V: Okay, I'll try there.
Jens V: Thanks anyway.
Rahul: You are welcome
Jens V: Bye
Rahul: I am sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused
Rahul: Bye
