I bought a used vostro 3700. I need to change the boot sequence, but it will not let me into the setup without an admin password. I have no idea what that password is.
previous owner is unknown. Is there some kind of workaround? What can I do?

I have an Inspiron Windows-8 (pro) laptop, that I purchased on 3/23/13. One strange issue I've noticed, is when I'm in a Windows-8 app (i.e. Mail), I'll start to move the cursor (via the touch-pad) to perform an action (like delete), and then all of a sudden, I'm "switched" into Desktop mode. Sometimes the OS flips back and forth between the app, and whatever I was on previously (usually the Desktop). Has anyone else noticed this? Is this a 1) keyboard issue, 2) a touch-pad issue, 3) a Dell issue (defect, or driver issue), or 4) a Windows-8 issue, or 5) something I'm not aware of? It doesn't happen all the time, but is frustrating when it does. I usually have to close the app, go back to the Windows "metro" screen, and re-launch the app. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My laptop suddenly won't turn on.. when i pressed on, the lights are all on, but then screen got no response at all.. no dell logo. Not even light.. but i already tested the screen to see if there any problem with it by pressing D+on button, it passes the test. The screen seems to be ok.. then i tried to pull the RAM, put it back, turn on, same problem still happened.. please help me out. Thanks.
I would like some advice from the community - or Dell, about this. My wife got this machine as a refurb from the outlet in 2008. It had numerous problems from day 1 and I think that is the reason the laptop was returned in the first place (and resold to us via the outlet).
I'll detail the problems but the questions are: 1) can this be fixed at all? 2) should I bother renewing the warranty ($156) to have it fixed? or 3) considering its age and problems should we toss it and start over? I will never buy anything from the outlet again and considering these problems I might not be in a hurry to buy another Dell.
Anyway, here are the problems:
1) From day one, when this machine is used for a long while (hot) the disk controller seems to fail. I say "seems" because the error reported is that there is no hard drive. When the machine is turned off for a while all is OK again.
2) A somewhat new problem is that the battery does not charge. The system says the battery is OK - but not charging. The system runs fine on the A/C adapter but goes dead immediately when disconnected.
3) Any attempt to download/run software from Dell fails (i.e. the S/W to detect the service tag failed and the double clicking on the downloaded PC Diagnostics binary does nothing.
4) Tolerable but annoying, the flash on the web cam "flashes" now and then regardless of the fact that we have NEVER run any webcam or meeting software.
5) May not be a real problem but things are SLOW. This machine takes about 10 minutes or more to boot. The OS is Vista Ultimate. I know, I know. I will change it if the other problems can be resolved.
Any feedback is appreciated. The machine "would be" good enough for our purposes if it ran well, so I want to avoid sending it to the landfill prematurely.

I have been looking around to find out how to Preform a Factory reset on my Grandma's old laptop she doesn't have the Vista CD anymore, and from what I have read it is pretty much impossible to preform a factory reset with out the disk. I hope I'm wrong on this if I am wrong about that can someone please tell me how in the world you preform a factory reset on a Dell inspiron E1505, running windows vista ultimate with out the vista CD

I have just got a new dell inspiron 5520 laptop (windows 8) and having some issues with the touch pad. I have update via Dell to the latest driver A05 but is didnt help.
1. When i change the default speed of the cursor to the maximun,it stay until next reboot where it cames back to the middle.
2. Somtimes, without clicking on the left touchpad click button , items on the the desktop are selected.

I am the proud owner of a Precision Laptop which I bought in Dec 12.
But a couple of problems have happened :
1) laptop damage
2) laptop bag - can you help ?
1 - Damage :
Sadly my temporary laptop bag an HP one ... (as I failed to find one that I liked when I was buying my laptop and then life overtook me) .... broke it's catch and the laptop in the bag fell and was badly damaged.
However the parts for my laptop are not in the UK (D'Oh) so I am now waiting around 3 weeks to get what is meant to be (and paid for '24hr repair service')
Why did Dell launch a laptop and not have a FULL stock of parts in the UK ! ???? How totally stupid ! IMHO ! :(
2- Laptop bag
This is a heavy laptop and needs a really good bag.
It measures 415x270x39mm.
I am greatly saddened that Dell has very few bags (2 = rucksack or v expensive 'case') that will fit, but are not what I want.
A friend HAS a really nice Dell laptop toploader bag and I really want the one he has. It's: material, black, pockets (about 10 each side!) either side of the central slot/sleeve for the laptop, two handles and a good shoulder strap.
It really does have loads of pockets and with a good quality liner for the laptop it makes for a really good bag. The toploader makes it easy to get in and out when in business meetings and at other occasions. :)
I have his Service Tag number but am failing to get the help I want from Dell - v v v sadly. We had hoped it would reference the bag and then be able to use that to hunt all US outlets for it. There are no Dell outlets in the UK so you have to just go to 100's of individual outlets or the likes of Tesco etc.
I had hoped that by finding the Dell Design team they could at least help tell me what the bag is called or referred to as.
Dell don't put any model number anywhere on or in the bag (!!) and one gets totally stuck when trying to specify it !
Can you identify it can you help me find one - even a 2nd hand one would be helpful! :)
Dell chat (where she asked me the model number, in spite of already telling her that there was NO number or ref anywhere!!!) suggested bags that don't fit & so have other Dell staff !!! D'Oh !
When I gave a similar bag reference DP458 to another Dell staff member he then told me that was the number for the bag I was looking for !!! What ! ????
Then he told me he couldn't see any details of the bag as it is no longer supplied ? So how did he possibly think that was the reference number for it ?
What is wrong with people ? Has common sense left all the staff - surely not ? :(
Perhaps this is why the original Dell chap wants to buy the Company back before the reputation is totally ruined. :(
So can you help me find my bag ?

I have XPS 14 (with Windows 7 64 bits) since last 2 yrs. Recently I faced this issue.
When I turn it on, it shows the Dell logo screen and then shows either of these 2 messages:
1. To insert media to boot
2. at time it shows - Disk Read error Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to recovery
I tried booting with my original Windows7 DVD. It boots up fine. I used Safe mode option and tried the Auto Recovery option. It tried to figure out the issue but didn't find any issue after more than an hr.
The issue still persist. it doesn't boot up from HDD. What could be the issue and how it can be resolved.

My SD card reader suddenly stopped working. Of course, my warranty expired last week. Up until a couple of days ago, it was fine. But, now the computer doesn't seem to recognize any SD cards when they are inserted. I haven't done many changes to the computer lately other than a Dell tech "taking over" my computer to address some driver issues with my USB ports.
I ordered a laptop and it said that it had a NIVIDIA 650m graphics card and that it uses the Intel HD 4000 graphics when I am not doing something very demanding but it will auto switch to NIVIDIA when I do something like gaming where the graphics card will be needed. Is there a way to manually switch to using the NIVIDIA?

I have had to replace the hard drive in my Inspiron 1525, I am trying to get a laptop working for my daughter, I got it second hand, and had a problem with the screen going hot and black in one corner, so I got a new screen, then lo and behold the hard drive has given up, I have got another one but unfortunately as the laptop was second hand have no recovery media, I have all the stuff from the bottom of the laptop, including serial numbers, service tags and the windows key, but no way of getting hold of the original vista that was installed, I tried tech support on Dell's site but couldn't get an option of even talking to support as it appears the warranty has expired.
Even if I have to pay for them is there any way of getting the Vista Recovery Disc????

Its less than two years old but no longer under warranty and from what I have read this is a very common problem with this model laptop. Is Dell doing anything about this?

We recently bought Dell laptop and whenever we plug the AC adapter it gives this message:
Batteries don't charge as it is supposed and when unpluged they don't last. Is there a solution for this or should we inquire for warranty as these laptops are brand new and were bought via Amazon.
