Pecision M4700 - New SSD Swap and Windows 10 upgrade

Apologies in advance if Im posting in the wrong forum. 

BACKGROUND:

So I've struggled alot since buying this off Amazon a few months ago.  I didn't expect to have so many issues when it comes to updating drivers.  But this isn't my main issue at the moment.  Long story short, the updated .net framework prevented SATA driver updates.  Im not computer expert, I wanted the piece of mind of being up to date.  I gave up after a couple of failed attempts of reinstalling windows 7.  I read where others were able to use windows 10 to successfully update all their drivers.  This is why i chose to purchase windows 10.

I only have a 256gb hard drive.  The pc has worked pretty well for editing 4k raw footage using proxies, so i'm happy with the scrubbing and render times.  But 256gb is hardly enough to work with any substantial amount of RAW video files.

PROBLEM

I bought a new 1 tb Crusial SSD.  It looked straight forward to replace, which it was.  I had bought windows 10 home and put it on a DVD.  Upon booting up, windows 10 engages, but after typing in the activation number, it comes to a screen asking for the drivers to the hard drive. 

So now I can't seem to figure out what to do from here.  I'm stumped, dell.com isn't suitable for a layman when it comes to downloading drivers to get the initial OS to install so I can then update everything through dell.com.

Ive thought about putting the new ssd in place of the optical drive, that way I can use the old OS to upgrade to the new OS, plus have the extra bit of hard drive space. 

There seems to be alot of ways to get through this, I just really dont know the best route to go.  Any help is appreciated.

I was running windows 8.1 just fine but i decided to completely wipe my hard drive and clean install windows 10. The wipe went fine with deriks boot and nuke but partly through my install of windows it said some files were missing. Now my bios will not detect my hard drive. i put the hard drive into another laptop and its detected there. I also tried putting a different hard drive in the Alienware but it wont detect it either. The only thing i can do is boot from usb drive. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Hi, my cat recently walked all over my Dell Inspiron keyboard and afterward my touchpad buttons no longer worked. I can no longer click and drag objects with the left and right-clicking brings up no menu. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the touchpad driver with no change. The touchpad itself works, there is a cursor and i can double-click etc. Just the buttons don't work. Can you help? Many thanks!

I wrote a post on June 2rd 2017 about the dell touchpad issue, which I can't find. I am posting this one as a follow up. I called dell to report the swollen battery and after one year use. This really didn't get me anywhere. They basically told me that it wasn't the battery that was the issue. I removed my battery and it was clearly swollen. I reconnected the laptop without the battery and the touchpad works just fine. I am running the computer just on AC right now without the battery. I ordered the new battery and dealing with this outside dell as they don't recognize this as a manufacturing defect. So, just posting in case this helps someone.

I just reset my Dell laptop to factory default and I cannot turn my Wifi on or off. It is greyed out. My wireless card is enabled. It looks like my wifi radio is off. How do I turn it back on? Thx

Scanning and repairing drive message

Good day all,

I recently encountered an issue with a friend's Inspiron laptop I've never seen before, and one that has resisted what I believed would be the fix. Each time the computer is booted, beneath the Dell logo just before the lock screen, a message reads:

Scanning and repairing drive (\\?\Volume{70dec3d5-1deb-41f2-bb24-cb9670d342b0})

The counter reaches 100% in a matter of seconds and boot continues normally. This seems to indicate something wrong with the drive; an integrity scan did not report the drive as failing or damaged and a full chkdsk did not report any issues. Despite this the message persists.

The laptop is running Windows 10, a copy that was downloaded from the upgrade period last year. I suspect it could be a faulty update because the problem only manifested itself a couple of days ago. Let me know if you have any ideas because this one has me stumped!


My M4600 has no Audio, does not boot from USB and some devices shown yellow

Hi, I need someone to help me for the following issues

1. I've Windows 8.1 in system, my system does not show any Audio installed in system, I have it previosuly, it looks like it has some conflicts. I previously have keyboard disable which is now working fine, then i have touchpad not working, all other works fine and now sound not working all other works fine. it seems like some conflict between devices to get resources. I disable my LPT, Bluetooth, but still audio not recognized.

2. I try to make a bootable usb, and try to boot from USB, i setup Boot priority in BIOS (Version A16) for USB to boot first, but when restart after apply boots from HDD, then i restarted using F12 boot option and USB option was not available there. I dont understand.

3. sometimes i dont even be able to goto bios, even if i press F5 for Bios or F12 to boot sequence, seems like nothing works, it goes into windows screen and upload from HDD without going into BIOS.

Please someone explains me a reason or setup a remote connection to solve online.

Dell XPS 15 9560 screen for photo editing

Hey,

I have the Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop for my photography work. I love using it for Photoshop and Lightroom work but I having trouble with the screens colours.

I've tried moving between the Vivid, Internet and Adobe profiles in Dell Premier Color but I'm still struggling. I'll edit an image on the Dell and I'll be happy with how it looks but when I export the file to send to clients the image looks way more saturated and therefore not as good (when I check it on my phone/other computer screens). I'm currently having to edit so that my images are over saturated so they look okay on clients screens.

Any help would be very useful!

Need access to the Ubuntu 16.04.2 recovery image for a Windows Precision 5520

Dell Support-

I was "given" a Precision 5520 that was ordered with Windows 10 to use and would like to install Ubuntu. I've been having trouble with the 16.04.2 generic install and have also had issues installing 17.04. Neither seem to work for me (probably because of drivers).

I see in other posts (here and on Reddit) people have gotten 16.04.2 working but no one has posted specifics on how and I have spent too much time trying.

So I logged into your support site with my laptops service tag to try to obtain an Ubuntu linux recovery image and your site only gives me the option to download the Windows 10 recovery image.

I have even changed my "selection" to Linux and your site redirects me to the Windows 10 recovery image. It will not let me change to linux.

How can I get access to the Dell Ubuntu recovery image for my Precision 5520?

Please advise.

Can't boot up laptop. Screen glitches out

My dad's Dell 1525 Laptop screen goes all glitchy and freezes after about 20 seconds after boot.

I've tried the following to know avail:
* Reset Bios to default settings
* Ran full diagnostics from Bios which came back with no errors
* Ran LCD diagnostics which was fine. It showed all colors and bars correctly
* Replace RAM with RAM from another laptop that I know works
* Replace hardrive with hard drive from another laptop I know works
* Try to boot without battery in
* Boot up from Ubuntu DVD. Screen glitches and freezes just like in Windows
* I don't hear any beeps to from the machine to suggest a motherboard issue

Any ideas on what the issue is or other things I can investigate?

Flashing orange light

I started my inspiron today and the battery light was flashing orange, no other colors. I restarted my computer and it works just fine, the only problem being the light still flashing. I plug in the adapter and the battery panel says it's not charging. All my settings that usually change when charging (brightness, wallpaper slideshow changing) change just as normal.

Everything else is working fine, and as of now my battery doesn't even seem to be going down. I'm not entirely sure what's happened-- my computer has been sitting in my room since I last used it last night, so it's not like any hardware could've been damaged from transporting it.

Anyway if I could get some advice that would be awesome.

Dell XPS 15 9550 BSOD since latest updates

Hi all,

As title says, since the latest BIOS and driver updates a couple of weeks, I keep getting BSOD (presumed) and a restart. The restarts happen when a video (using Chrome) is paused and I've walked away from the laptop, so I don't get to see the error message. I have also witnessed a couple of ORANGE SOD's (Windows 10 forums state this is no different to BSOD) whilst videos have been playing but no error code is given on these.

Intel Graphics HD current driver version 21.20.16.4627

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M current driver version 21.21.13.6942

Have tried a few things, such as changing power management but it's still happening and driving me bonkers!

Typically, I am now out of warranty, although laptop is only 16 months old.

Any help appreciated.

I have just completely refreshed a family Dell Vostro 3460 with a new HDD, new Windows 7, new Dell power adapter. I have run Dell's multistage diagnostics test on HDD, memory, etc., and all is fine. But I'm getting at boot a blackscreeen message saying the battery is wrong. It is not. Is there a registry fix or something for this annoyance?

Devices manager, unknown USB devices missing drivers, can't be found.

After refreshing a family Dell Vostro 3460 with new HD, new Windows 7 and a driver disk that was also provided by the (legit) Windows vendor), and after all the Windows updates, everything is fine in Device Manager except for three items, for which updated drivers cannot be found, and one for which no driver present at all. I don't know enough to know where to being looking for whatever is needed.

They are:

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

Unknown device

USB2.0-CRW

The unknown might be the built-in card reader in the front? Just a guess, since no other USB devices are "attached" as for as I know.

The CRW is the one that shows up as having no driver present.

Can anyone assist me? More info needed from me?

Will an E6430 laptop make use of low latency RAM?

Hey guys, I noticed that Crucial, among others, offers CL9 SODIMM RAM compatible with the E6430.

Will the laptop make use of the faster latency clocks or is it simply compatible and will work at CL11 like the RAM I presently have?

Purchased  xps 9360 laptop on 19th April .

Laptop delivered  on  21st April.  

Config :- 16 gb Ram  , 4 years extended warranty and accidental cover

From day 1 problem of screen flicker  every 2  to 3 hours for 1 to 1.5 sec .  On 22 May while on  personal work  trip out of Singapore  full  system crash . Called  customer care  , they send a engineer in 48 hours  for motherboard replacement.  Engineer couldn’t solve the problem  and asked me to wait for few days .

Since travelling back to Singapore called dell international to transfer the case to Singapore and fix the  laptop in Singapore asap . Got a reply u need to contact  dell Singapore after reaching Singapore  yourself and they can fix the problem . Being a customer its dell responsibility to shift the case , and even informing your dell team about my travel back to Singapore no one even made any arrangement to check about the part availability in Singapore  or trying to make a provision of it.

Travelled back to Singapore called dell  asked them to fix the system.  They said they will send the engineer , got a call  cannot fix as part not available  and reschedule  for 2 days later , after 2 days again had a chat cannot fix as part not available. On asking if part not available  replace the system as 1 month old  and started to give problems , they say cannot .

Ask them to fix they say part not available .  Ask them what the problem . They say last time changed motherboard not okay need to replace motherboard again. In 1 month 2 time motherboard change. I guess no quality control for dell parts . And part still not available .

Luckily got a email that part going to be delivered on 2nd June , took half day off  but no call or email from  dell engineer . Called dell Singapore again got a reply that part not available .  If part not available then why  your team mailing and setting an appointment .  And if suppose last minute change who is going to update to the customer on this  ?.  

From 2 weeks the part is not available .  Ask the customer care to write a complain and give complain number  ,got a reply that he will email back after   escalating it up .   But all in  vain never received a email . Called back again  and asked to provide a complain number on call , call centre agent wrote a very diplomatic and neutral email “ customer asking service on weekend or after office hours” and send to me . He  said it is a high priority mail and soon someone  from dell management will look into it and reply to me(irrespective of weekend ).

If  dell  cannot fix the system  better  replace the system, if they cannot do that also  please refund the money  . I don’t want to waste my energy and time  talking and trying fixing appointment and loosing my work because of this defected system . A advice to management please remove next business day service commitment  as its quite misleading
