Dell Inspiron M5010 dreaded 7 beeps!

I purchased this laptop in May of 2011, its been great, had some cooling problems off and on but otherwise I love this laptop. Randomly the 7 beeps started one morning. It seemed to want to boot up, but the screen stayed blank and after 20 seconds the beeping started. I started researching how to fix it but havent found a straight answer, its either the processor, the motherboard, one of the chips etc....I did however find one quick fix without taking the laptop apart, I read that I needed to turn the laptop on, cover the vents and let it beep for 15-20 minutes or until hot to the touch before turning it off and then back on again. I was amazed that it worked. I thought I had my laptop living again, but as soon as it turned off for the evening the 7 beeps returned upon rebooting it the next day. I did the quick fix again and it worked again, giving me time to at least back up my hard drive onto my external. I am at a loss as to what I need to do now to fix it. Any suggestions? I am really disappointed because for as much money as this cost I expected it to last longer than it has.

I upgraded the ram in my Vostro 3450 yestarday. While replacing the memory door I noticed that one of the little tabs was dammaged. The memory door is no longer secure, and doesn't lie flush with the bottom of the notebook. Is there a place on dell.com that I can go and buy a new one?

M6500 memory question

$

Recently picked up a Precision M6500 with an i5 - 520m CPU. It has two DIMM slots which currently have 2 x 2GB DDR3 @ 1066mhz ram in them.

I am intending to max out the memory in this machine, but have tried two different sets of memory to no avail.

Here is a link to both types I have tried.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008XK1M8S/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YUF8ZG/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been told that the M6500 can take 8GB per memory slot, but when my first attempt failed, I tried 2 x 4GB DIMMS just to make sure the 8GB per slot might have been wrong. I also went with Corsair just to make sure it wasn't manufacturer issue.

Is it possible that you have to make sure it's pc3-10600 instead of 10660 or 10666? Especially since this is the lowest level M6500 motherboard and CPU combo?

Going to give this another shot and order some more memory today, but it's seriously going to hack me off if I get memory that isn't compatible again.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ted

Strange Issue With Studio 1537 PSU

$

Hi all,

OK, I know this particular laptop is a bit long in the tooth but I was given it in a non-functioning state and told that if I could fix it I could have it.

Well, fix it I did - turned out it was a duff HD and duff battery.

I decided I wanted to upgrade the DVD to a BluRay as Overclockers were selling an internal laptop BluRay cheap.

Me being the brain surgeon that I am I managed to break the connector on the motherboard for the touchpad when I took the laptop apart to fit the new optical drive (as an aside, I feel the design of the laptop isn't that good considering that optical drives can and do fail and that access to the optical drive is poor - you have to take apart the whole laptop to get access)..

I ordered a new motherboard and fitted that yesterday. Everything seems OK apart from this weird problem with the power supply.

I have the mains adaptor connected. It's a genuine Dell 1537 AC adaptor.

The power indicator LED doesn't illuminate. The power indicator on the desktop says my battery is not being charged (my battery is at 84% atm). The Dell BIOS upgrade that I downloaded from the Dell site won't run as it says I have no AC adaptor connected. Neither will Windows Vista SP2 install for the same reason.

This would indicate that there is no AC input.

However, my battery indicator has remained at 84% for 12 hours now with the adaptor connected and turned on. The battery indicator on the desktop indicates I have 3356 hours of battery life remaining. When I turn off the mains supply this time drops to around 3 hours of battery life.

To me that tells me my laptop is running off the AC adaptor but that my laptop thinks that it isn't getting a DC supply.

I have also tried running the laptop with no battery connected and with the AC adaptor only connected. The laptop runs fine.

I am wondering if I somehow damaged the internal DC Jack lead when I was taking the laptop apart and reassembling it. Also, the motherboard I fitted is a different - later - revision of the 1537 so am wondering if that might be the cause (possibly an incompatibility between the new revision MoBo and the older revision hardware that was in the laptop when I got it?)

But I do know that the Studio 1537 has had other hardware issues in the past concerning the PUS so am posting this in case anyone else has encountered this issue too and had a different solution.

Many thanks,

SR

Extremely slow Latitude e5520

My laptop is (recently) extremely slow - especially any network activity (web,
Outlook email, etc...) Other PCs on this domain are running fine.

Dell Latitude e5520, i5 Processor, 4GB RAM, 230GB Disk, Windows 7 Pro

Connected to a domain.

Fixed disk does a lot of thrashing.

What I've tried thus far:

Format / reinstall Windows 7 Pro

Defrag

Run AVG Antivirus nightly - No issues

Run Malwarebytes - No issues

Run CCleaner.

Windows Update is on.

Chkdsk - Pass

Dell Diagnostics - Pass

Clean inside / outside

Safe boot w/network - No change

Clean boot - No change

Any ideas? I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Thanks!

Unable to use F2/FN+F2 to enable wireless

I am trying to enable my wireless connection on my Inspiron n5110 laptop with Windows 7, but my F2 key does not work. The F2 key doesn't bring up the bios or work with command prompt so I'm sure it isn't working. I installed the drivers from my Resource CD.  As far as I can tell, there isn't some other switch to turn on wireless capabilities. Is there any other way for me to enable my wireless internet or do I need a new keyboard?

Using: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 wireless adapter.

So far I have tried:

-Enabled all properties for my network adapter under the advanced settings in Device Manager.

-Tried to enable wireless from Mobility Center (Which just gives me a grayed out "Turn on wireless button")

-Update bios

-Made sure the function keys aren't set to multimedia keys.

-Re-installed Windows 7

-Took out the plug and battery, held the power button, and then reconnect both.

-Took out the keyboard and cmos battery.

-Installed Dell Quickset

When I boot my new Latitude E6500 with XP it tries to connect to the WiFi internet but after a few minutes of trying it stops. While it is going through this futile exercise I can’t stop it or do anything else until it runs its frustrating course!

If I take the following steps I can finally get it to work; Click on “Set Program Access and Defaults” - Change or remove programs - Dell  Control Point Connection Manager - Change - Install Shield Wizard - Modify.

After the installation is complete I then have to go to the Dell Control Point Icon in the Task Bar, go to Control Point Connection Manager, click WiFi, choose the WiFi network I want, click on “WiFi” and usually I then get connected!

This is a monumental pain in the rear!

How do I get this thing to connect automatically to the strongest network as it should?

Is there an updated version of this program I can download?

I’m no computer whiz, I just stumble along until I find the answer and I would sure appreciate some help!! It is long ago out of warranty and Dell is no help.

Hi folks,

everything is in the title.

I was running windows 8 Pro 64bits and fingerprint software was working fine, thanks to this post:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19475072/20445973.aspx#

But since I've installed 8.1, Dell Data Protection fail to install.

Related to the subject below, it seems that it may take a while after Dell propose a solution.

Any feedback on fingerprint sensor working on 8.1 ?

Inspirion 1545 - HHD replaced with SSD - No Boot Sector Found

$

Hello - Could somebody please help?

I have a Dell 1545 Inspiron that now has 8GB RAM and a Crucial 120GB SSD (swapped out last night). The original HDD drive failure has prompted me to do this.

Problem: On boot, wiht the SSD onboard, message displayed, no boot sector on HDD

Went to BIOS, no option for SSD (just HDD). Change boot order to CD then HDD, fine... Pop in the new OEM Win 7 Pro 64 bit disc, looks to start loading and after 4 mins or so, the Inspiron reboots. It appears to be on a loop with no load occurring.

BIOS shows all RAM available, all components operable AHCI is default selection, it recognises the new 120GB drive (under a heading of HDD). I have seated and re-seated the SSD.

Back in the good old days, you used to have to format new drives and partition as appropriate. The latter still might be true, but what about SSD's?

I am the first to admit I am no expert (the last time I did a HDD upgrade was about 10 years ago to a desktop, but should it be this challenging? Have I missed a step?
