Windows 10 Anniversary & USB C Not Working

$

Just had my Precision 3510 updated by the work technician and I am now unable to use my second monitor via USB C.

Before this, I had a USB C to HDMI adapter that worked without issue but nothing I have tried since will restore it's functionality.

Looking in device manager it shows the port as Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed) but before it was plug and play.

I've uninstalled the USB driver and had it reinstalled with no change via the device manager.

Any help on this?

will the d3100 docking station work with any machine with usb 3?

hey out there, i'm trying to find out if the d3100 docking station work with any machine with usb 3?

i want to be able to have my two monitors, keyboard and mouse plugged into the docking station and then plug it into my xps 15 laptop but i want my partner to be able to use the desktop machine we have while the laptop is away.

if the d3100 supports any machine with usb 3, i can use it as a docking station for both my laptop and desktop ;)

XPS 12 9250 - Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings

$

For my XPS 12 9250, under the power scheme, there is only one setting for Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings, which is 6.0W@2.8GHz. This is the only setting for both on battery and plugged in.

The Intel m5-6y54 has a TDP of 4.5w and can be configured up to 7w or down to 3.5w. I believe in other mobile systems, users have the ability to select a lower power mode while on battery to extend battery life (at expense of performance).

Given that the XPS 12 has short battery life (when comparing to its peers), shouldn't it make sense for Dell to enter a setting within the chipset thermal framework to allow the cpu to operate at a lower power setting for longer battery life?

I certainly would want that option. Is that something that Dell can implement?

Secondary HDMI Monitor Flickers

I have an XPS 15 9550 with 4k Touch Screen. I use it at work and hook it up to a 1980x1020 monitor via the HDMI port. Pretty standard.

However, I've noticed that once in awhile the monitor will flicker to black for about a second and then pop back up. Annoying but not frustratingly annoying. This generally only happens a few times a day, but some days it will do it like 5 times in under two minutes which is frustratingly annoying.

And even worse, sometimes it will flicker to black and just stay black. The windows I had open on my monitor will jump over to the laptop screen and I have to unplug the HDMI cable from the laptop, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in.

This shouldn't be happening. I've thought that maybe it is because I need a 4k monitor to pair it properly, but that doesn't seem right. Besides, I'm not wanting to spend $400 quite yet.

Any idea what's going on? Do I have a bad laptop? From what I know, I've updated everything (Bios, Graphics drivers, etc.). I've tried a different monitor and a different HDMI cable - no difference. Same issue on all.

Inspiron 1545 no display on laptop, external works fine

I know this topic has been discussed before but none seem to be the same as my situation.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545.  When turned on I get nothing on my display.  Connecting to an external display works fine.  Here are the current steps I have taken without any results:

1.  Tried the memory swap thing....no display.

2.  Checked fuse on motherboard.  OK

3.  Installed new cable.  No change.

4  Installed 3 known good displays....same part number that was in laptop as original.

5. Installed 2 new good motherboards....no change.

6. This is an LED monitor  so no backlight or inverter.

7. Removed keyboard....pressed on all the "known" areas that people have mentioned on this forum.

Connect is to an external monitor and all is good.  Try the FN key an the F1 no change.....Sure could use some more ideas as I am completely out.

Thanks

Frank

Dell Customer Support is a NIGHTMARE! (Vent)

I bought a used Dell laptop from a reputable vendor, but unfortunately the admin password in the BIOS was set. A week ago I tried asking Dell support if there was a way to remove or access the function.

"Oh yes sir, we can do that!" was their reply. "But you have Business Services, you have to speak with Consumer Services. Here is their number."

The next agent says, "Oh yes, we can do that but you have to speak to the people at Out-of-Warranty Services. Don't worry. This one time service call will be free."

The next agent says, "Oh yes sir. We can do that but you must speak to the Canadian Services group."

The next agent says, "Oh yes sir. We can help you, but you must register online and provide a receipt as proof of purchase, and a picture of your service tag."

I go online, create an account, have my Dell recognized by the website by installing an app, and get the required documents and start all over again.

After going through all the transfers from one agent to another, I find someone that finally seems to be able to help me. I email him the documents. The account that I created seems to be completely inconsequential as they ask me for more registration, and details. We mess around with establishing me as a Dell client for 2 hours (of a day of vacation).

He finally tells me that he has a password that I can use to access the BIOS settings. I reboot and try it, and of course, it doesn't work. Several hours making phone calls, getting required information all for absolutely nothing. I hate Dell. I will always remember that Dell=****. And I'm still stuck with this piece of junk that I can't so much as change the boot order. Anybody want a laptop real cheap?

Inspiron N5030 won't boot HDD failure 2000-0146

Hi! Father-in-law dropped his laptop and it now won't boot. Will not boot into safe mode, or system restore, just hangs in both cases. Have managed to run Dell Pre-boot system assessment. Hard drive fails with code 2000-0146. Further testing revealed 0F00.1332 IRQ did not set in time. Am therefore presuming HDD is corrupted. A chkdsk may resolve this, but can't run chkdsk as we don't have any Dell DVDs. At this stage planning to replace HDD, but don't want to start as we don't have any Dell/Windows 7 or 10 installation DVDs. Is it possible to obtain official Dell Installation DVD? I have found restore.solutions/.../ but don't know if this is 'official' or not? Thoughts, tests or comments most welcome. Andrew

AC Adapter Not Recognized??

I've had this issue for a couple weeks now and haven't been able to fix it. I don't think it could be the battery considering I just bought my Dell Inspiron a couple months ago, I think it's caused by water damage to the charger but am not 100% sure and before going to get another charger I figured I'd come on here to look on how to fix it. I saw that some people have used the BIOS Update and it fixed it, so I went to try to do that but I cannot since it says the AC Adapter needs to be plugged in. Anyone have any tips that can help?

PCI Encryption / Decryption Controller missing driver

When I run the Dell SupportAssist program, it tells me I'm missing the driver for PCI Encryption/Decryption Controller.  When I click on "Install" I get the message:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There are no compatible drivers for this device.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

I keep coming up empty. Can't find the driver for this hardware. Anyone else have this problem and fixed it?

PS. This happened after I upgraded Win 8.1 to Win 10

XPS 13 shuts down instead of going to sleep

When I close the lid my XPS 13 shuts down instead of going to sleep. Same issue when I use the power button. I've set my preferences to go to sleep when the lid is closed or pressing the power button. But the XPS 13 acts like those preferences don't take effect.

I hope someone has a procedure or update that I can run to make the machine respect the sleep preferences.

I've seen a similar post from 2014 for an Inspiron model running Windows 8. Now in 2016 most machines are probably running Windows 10. So the problem has existed in other machines and prior OS's.

Dell Israel Support is not efficient

Hi,

I have purchased Dell Inspiron 3 years ago and the warranty is over.

I have purchased it with Windows 7 and I have a valid product activation key for windows.

Windows started crushing every time. so I want to re-install windows 7 (home premium oa).

I have called Dell support in Israel, and they said that since the warranty is over, they cannot supply me with a link to download Windows, and that there is nothing they can do and that I should call Microsoft.

So , I have called Microsoft and they told me that Dell did not purchased support for the Windows they distributed to me. so they can'y help me.

I don't need any support, I just need the ISO file for Windows 7 home premium OA.

What should I do ?

I don't think I will buy Dell anymore if this is how they behave after the warranty is over...

Change function of power button on WD15?

$

Hi there,

I have an XPS 13 (9350) connected to a WD15 dock. It's all working fine, except that pressing the power button on the DOCK tells Windows (10 Home) to shutdown. I'd rather it told Windows to sleep.

Is there any way to change this function? I have the power button on the XPS set to sleep, I assumed the dock would use the same setting.

Inspiron 17R 5737 shutting down 3-5 seconds after pressing power button

$

Hello everyone,

I bought my laptop 2 years ago and about exactly 10 days after the warranty had ended it started to shut down automatically within 3 to 5 seconds after being turned on.

It keeps shutting down both in the boot menu and in BIOS settings so it can't be a software related issue.

I have already tried the following:

Remove CMOS battery to reset BIOS

Remove one component after another trying to turn it on each time

I've stripped it down to the bare minimum leaving only the motherboard and power button and it still keeps shutting down. (I even removed the screen and used my sharp ears to detect when it turned off. The motherboard gives off this quiet sound even without a fan).

I've taken it to two separate computer specialists and the laptop passed all the multimeter tests and what not. According to them it is not overheating and the voltage is OK throughout the entire board.

In the end the computer mechanics said that they couldn't help me and that they have never seen something as crazy as this. It SHOULD be working!

The strangest thing about this laptop is the fact that if you don't touch it for a week or so, it MAY (or may not) turn on and STAY on for a good couple of hours until dying again.

For example after I got it back again from the second mechanic, I tried turning it on and it stayed on for 1 minute. After that it stayed on for 3 minutes. Then it stayed on for more than 2 hours.

Now I have tried turning it on for at least a 100 times straight with no luck.

In the 2 hour window I wasn't clever enough to try and update the BIOS as I saw DELL released an update for the model in September 2016. Maybe that would have helped?!!

The only thing I did was do a full system diagnosis on DELL's homepage, but the laptop turned off half way through the process and so far I have had no luck turning it on again.

Can anyone help me?

Has anyone at least had the same problem as me? (I have Googled, but found nothing).

Thank you!
