Hi-
I have an intermittent problem with my machine crashing directly to "off", with the only consistency noted is that the condition occurs when loading a graphic-intense game (longstanding problem -- at least a year or so).
Essential Config: XPS L501X, Core i7-840QM, NVIDIA GeForce 435M, 4+2 GB RAM (Dell-supplied)...
Pre-Boot Diagnostics:
Each tested at least 3 times, with the worst condition tested twice and reported below:
Testing Configuration: 2GB DIMM, 4GB DIMM, Slot A, Slot B (i.e. 2A is the 2GB chip in DIMM Slot A, B empty)
- Both chips installed and swapped slots -- same result each: Hang at WCMch extended test, followed by power off
- 4A: Hang at MARCH B quick test
- 4B: LCD screen will not turn on from startup (removed battery and AC cord, restarted, same result multiple times)
- 2A: Passes initial tests, hangs and powers off at WCMch extended test
- 2B: Passes initial tests, hangs and powers off at WCMch extended test
Once the laptop is up to operating temperature, the frequency of random power-off decreases (sometimes for many days). It has always operated very hot. Max typical operating temps:
Chassis: 170F
Bridge: 180F
Vid Proc: 212F
Cores: 140F idle to 180F, dependent upon load
HDD: 125F
Fan operates as expected, cooling fins and air intakes free and clear (cleaned regularly), thermal paste replaced x3 since early 2011 on both vid processor and core processor.
Based on the above, can I expect that there is a physical MOBO problem and a faulty 4GB DIMM chip -- or could there more to it?
I have enjoyed the laptop's performance but find it very irritating have it randomly power-off while working, and not being able to play a favorite game. The warranty has long expired, and this is not scheduled to be replaced before others in the household.
Thanks in Advance...
