E7440 Win 8.1 Update - Slow Performance After Resume From Sleep

$

I have a new Latitude E7440, the only install is office 2013. Out of the box, did windows update, did the 8.1 update.

If I put it to sleep (close the lid) and wake it up again, the system experiences slow performance - choppy youtube video, audio artifacts, Chrome and windows explorer hangs, etc. This happens on battery and plugged in.

If I do a hard restart, the issue goes away.

Once I saw an error flash from the tray saying the intel video driver had crashed and was resetting. Only caught a glimpse of it.

I tried reinstalling both video and audio drivers (including safemode-restart), including the pre-8.1 video drivers and I still get the same issue.

Anyone else having this sort of issue? Haven't found anything with search. Thanks!

Battery plugged in, not charging...(found the fix that worked for my Dell Inspiron

Well, the charger is plugged in, but it says not charging. This has happened twice. I would have thought bad battery or bad charger, except luckily the first time it occured right after buying a new hard drive. I did a hard reset on the battery and that worked.

Now, it has happened again. I tried the regular battery reset, but that did not work. I tried uninstalling device and reinstall..did not work either.

Oddly, what did work was the following:

I had about 38% battery left. I unplugged the power cord from both laptop and wall outlet.

I removed the batter. Computer went dead.

I wiped the battery connectors with a clean cloth several times.

I put the batter back in and turned the laptop on with battery only.

I plugged power cord into side of laptop, then into wall outlet.

Immediately, the laptop began charging again!

I am not sure why this worked. Maybe some techy out there may know. When I tried the battery reset, I turned the computer off before taking out the battery. Then took it out. Plugged in laptop with power cord and powered it. Then shut down and placed battery in. I turned back on..but nothing...

It may have to do with having the laptop already on when taking out the battery, or placing back the power cord, or could just be the wiping the battery with cloth????

How do I update BIOS to Boot from Optical CD Drive to load Microsoft Defender Offline

Installing new hard drive on Inspiron 6000

Well,

I guess my hard drive is done for so I'll have to have it replaced.  My Inspiron 6000 had a 80 gb hard drive and I was wondering if there was anything specific I should be looking for in replacing it.  For example, I think the hard drive is IDE instead of SATA and should be 120 gb or less otherwise the BIOS wont recognize all the space.

I've been told that the current hard drive will have some sort of adapter on it that I should remove and attach to the new one to make it work.  With this in mind, should I be looking for a SATA hard drive and not an IDE?

Also, I'm going to have to reinstall windows on the new hard drive and I dont think that Dell sent me a copy of the windows xp CD/DVD when they sent me the laptop.  Is it possible/legal to download a copy of windows xp and install it using the product number on the sticker on my laptop?  It's windows xp media center edition otherwise I'd just use one of the home edition dvds that I have lying around.

I think the operating system is my secondary concern though and getting a compatible hard drive is more important.  I see notebook hard drives on sale for $40+ and want to make sure I'm getting the right kind.  My brother says just about any notebook hard drive will work, but I'm cautious about the SATA/IDE thing.

Thanks.

Function Wireless F2 key doesn't enable wireless

I've had my Alienware 14 for about 9 days, and this is my 2nd problem with it.

CURRENT ISSUE:
I cannot turn on the wireless capability using the function F2 key. I've gone to the support pages and read about going into the device manager and right clicking on the network adapter and selecting 'enable'.  The device is enabled, and my wireless is broadcasting as everyone else in my home can connect to the internet with out an issue. Any suggestions as to what I can do to turn on the wireless capability?

STILL UNRESOLVED ISSUE:
The 1st issue if anyone is interested in helping with, is "Primary Surface Test Failed". There was no prompt to click yes or no, just a quick flash on the screen.

Do e-port serial numbers convert to service tag numbers

I have a dell e-port plus docking station but it doesn't appear to have the traditional Dell 8-digit service tag number.  Instead it has this super long number on a sticker on the back:  3103815610024O06E4.  Is this the serial number?  I can't look up warranty info with this number.  Hmm..  Why is Dell making this so difficult?

Laptop Locks Up

My Dell Vostro V131 laptop locks up soon after logging into my user account. It lets me do one thing such as start Internet Explorer and then hangs. After that, everything stops.

It has Windows 7 Professional (64 bit).

It works fine in Safe Mode.

I restored Windows to the factory settings, and installed the Windows updates, but it still locks up. This makes me think the problem isn't Windows, but do you think reinstalling Windows 7 would help? If not, what might?
