XPS 15 L521X Touchpad settings issue

Okay, this is driving me nuts.  I have a new XPS 15 L521X running Windows 8.  It has a Synaptics touchpad.

I started having this issue, and tried to resolve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver (I'm using the latest, version 16.4.0.4 A04).  After the reinstall, it's great, everything's working right, and it saves my settings (e.g., I hate the right-side swipe that brings up the charm, and I love being able to three-finger swipe to go forward or back in a browser).

But after a reboot, it's back to some kind of default settings, and no matter what I change in the Touchpad Settings app, it doesn't change the functionality of the touchpad.  So I am back to having the right-side charm swipe and no forward or back gestures in my browser, even though the app shows that the former is disabled and the latter are enabled.  This is highly annoying.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, with the same results.  Works fine initially; after a reboot, it doesn't work anymore.  Any help?  I feel like maybe there's something hanging around in the registry or something that is changing the settings after I reboot, but I have no idea where to look.

I've searched and searched and can't find anyone else having this issue.  I can't believe I'm the only one.  Thanks in advance for replies!
