Dell XPS 13 9350 -- Electrical buzzing noise

$

0

I very recently purchased a xps 13 9350. I unboxed it last night and out of box I noticed that it would make a buzzing noise seemingly randomly. So I will list all the symptoms here and the troubleshooting I have done and maybe perhaps someone with more electrical knowledge than myself will be able to help.

Symptoms

As I said there is an electrical buzzing noise coming from the top left part of the chassis, it is most audible near the escape key but it is in that general area. Escape key, the 3 key, the R key, and around the tab key.

If I were to describe the noise I would say it sounds like an electrical buzz similar to when something is shorting out or an arc is made. I would also say it is very similar to coil whine or the noise a mechanical hard drive makes when the read write heads are moving. It is also vaguely similar to the noise a cicada makes.

The noise also seems to happen randomly, sometimes it is present and sometimes it is not. The same is to be said for its intensity, sometimes the noise is VERY audible (can be heard no matter where you are in the room) or sometimes it is very quiet and can only be heard if you but your ear right next to the places I listed earlier.

Furthermore the noise seems to intensify when there is a lot of movement on the screen. If I scroll up and down quickly on a page the noise will become more present and get louder. In fact as I type this it seems to act up randomly when I press keys or it will occur even when I am not touching the laptop.

Troubleshooting

Now since I discovered this problem last night I have read probably every thread I can find using google on xps 13 buzzing issues so I am going to get some things out of the way early.

This laptop does not have an optical drive.

My model has a nvme SSD which has no moving parts and would not be making noise, I doubt it is related to the electrical of the SSD as it is located more towards the center of the chassis.

I highly doubt it is the fan considering the location of the noise as well as how it sounds. The noise of the fan is very distinguishable and different. I can hear the fan the same time the buzzing is happening and they are very different sounds.

It is not my AC power adapter as the noise occurs regardless of the laptop being plugged in or not.

People in other forums have suggested that it is related to the Intel display drivers, I have tried disabling the drivers and the noise is present regardless, no change.

Other people have suggested changing some power saving settings in the integrated graphics control panel, the noise is present regardless of what those settings are set to.

Other forums have also suggested that brightness settings have a role to play, no matter what my brightness is set to the noise does not change.

This is a VERY long post but I want to be as detailed as possible for the people who might be able to help me with this issue and for anyone else who might find this post later on. ANY help is greatly appreciated and I will keep a close eye on this forum to reply back as quickly as possible.

Also this video is not mine but the sound is VERY similar to the noise my laptop is making, hopefully this will help as well.

Studio 1745 Fan Not Working

I've read through all of the articles I could find regarding Studio 1745 issues, however I don't have the issue of noise because the fan will NOT startup or run at all.

I ordered and installed the replacement fan and heat-sink, no difference.  The fan doesn't even flinch when I turn it on.

Any ideas?

BTW - I don't know if this makes a difference but I had to replace the hard drive and reinstall the o/s.  I know that sounds odd but I've seen several articles where users have stated that their fan quits working after a fresh o/s install.

This laptop belongs to a client, I do not know if the fan was working when it was brought to me, the user claims that he never had an issue with the laptop overheating/locking up and black screen.

Latitude E5470 TPM Disappeared from Device Manager

At my employer we have experienced several issues with the TPM disappearing from device manager.

This causes us to not be able to reactivate bit-locker.

We would image the device with Windows 7 Enterprise.

We have had this happen with several machines that did and did not have windows updates processed.

Same with Dell drivers and BIOS processed and not processed.

I have run HWINFO tool and it lists the TPM with a memory address of something like 0000FED4000 yet I cannot find that in device manager or msinfo32.

I have went in to the BIOS and turned off the TPM and turned it back on and activated it.

I have reloaded the BIOS firmware.

If we re-image the laptops the TPM shows up in the device manager as expected so I do not believe this to be a problem with the motherboard.

Oddly enough though we have had motherboards replaced and the TPM shows up.

I don't feel that replacing the motherboard is the solution to this issue as we can restore functionality with a re-image or reload of the OS from scratch. But that doesn't satisfy the risk of the issue rearing its head again.

I have searched for weeks to find a solution to this problem but I have come up short.

I am certain others are having this issue.

With all the drivers processed and windows updates processed it does not resolve the issue.

What do you think I am missing?

I thank you for taking the time to review this.

XPS 9350 Support Assist has detected a failing component that requires immediate attention

We have a Dell XPS 9350 that has randomly been popping up a message window from Dell Support Assist saying that it has detected a failing component that requires immediate attention.  it then wants you to log into our Dell account (I assume to start the support process since we are still under warranty).  What is weird is that under the "Failure Description" to the left of the message it has "Hard Drive - Not Installed".  Of course there is no hard drive, it is the SATA and there is no external drive attached.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Inspiron M531R bios/boot locked

Hi so my friend had gotten this laptop a couple of years ago. They used it a few times and then kinda of forgot about it. Anyways they had to in a boot password on it, and of course they've forgot what it is.

I've already contacted Dell support chat, however the 'supposed' passwords they gave me didn't work. The reason I say supposed passwords is because if you do a google search for bios password generator it will come up with a page that gives both of these passwords, plus others that won't work, for the service tag.

I've tried to then reset the password by removing the CMOS battery, but after waiting a few hours and replacing the battery the bios still remembers it's password setting.

I've also looked on the board to see if there a pwd jumper, however for the area I can see I don't see any jumpers.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? Or is this laptop pretty much dead now?

Dell Inspiron 15 3542 HDD problem

I turned on my computer this morning and have the following error

"Internal Hard drive not found to resolve this issue try to reseat the drive.

"No Bootable devices--Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 to enter setup menu, F5 for PSA"

I removed and reseated the HDD. I'm getting the same error.

According to the BIOS setup I have a "Fixed HDD Toshiba MQ01ABF050 (500 GB)"

According to the F5 PSA for Hard Drive 0 "ePSA 4236.5 Success All tests passed"

Service Tag <removed>

If I go to the setup and change the boot option to "Legacy" from "UEFI" and boot from a USB recovery disk Chkdsk /f finds no problems. Diskpart shows 4 partitions.

I tried to recover the OS from the USB recovery drive and at 99% comes up with an error. "There was a problem resetting your PC" I'm back to the original problem.

Computer Originally came with Windows 8 and was upgraded to 10.

I am currently downloading Windows 10 via microsoft's media creation tool and will do a diskpart /clean and clean install.

I assume this is a BIOS problem since Bios detects it, PSA passes, then appears bootstrap or something does not work. I also can not access partition 4 the recovery partition.

Dell what should I do?

XPS-13 BIOS update 9343A09.exe: Is it A09 or A10?

At Dell.com, I check for updates for my XPS-13; it says I need BIOS update 9343A09.exe.  Description on dell.com say "version A10"; when I run the file it says version A09.  It installs successfully and reboots.  However, returning to dell.com, support site says I still need it (in other words, dell.com is not detecting the successful installation of whatever version this BIOS is).

What cable is this??

I've lost the "power output" cable to my Dell Power Companion (PW7015M) and despite my best efforts, have been unable to identify it to order a replacement... It's a connector type I've never seen before, and dell support was unable to resolve. Please help me!! All I need is to identify this cable so I can order. I believe the output should be the 2.3A version. Thanks in advance.

Dell Inspiron 17R 5737 BLUETOOTH IS DEAD

So.....

I've been trying to figure out how to fix the bluetooth for my computer and it just isn't working out for me.

The problem:

It started out that my bluetooth wasn't showing up on my computer (in the message center or in settings)  Now, normally, this isn't a problem.  For whatever reason, my computer has this issue often and usually the remedy is a simple restart.  After restart, I'd be able to connect my fitbit or my speaker or whatever and the world was happy.  Now, though, several restarts did nothing.  Not good.  I checked my device manager, clicked on hidden devices

What I tried:

1)  I checked my device manager, clicked "show hidden devices", and checked on all bluetooth related drivers.  They were all up to date BUT it said that it needed additional permissions (code 45) .  Strange.

2)Uninstalling and restarting, hoping it would automatically reinstall.  Did nothing.

3)Searched services in my settings and looked for bluetooth related items.  Found "Bluetooth support services".  Set it to Automatic.  Restarted.  Nothing different.

4)  Installing Bluetooth drivers from Dell's site.  Used device detect to find the drivers and downloaded the drivers I found

Dell Wireless 1705 Wi-Fi+ Bluetooth Driver

 and

ntel PROSet/Wireless Bluetooth LE GUI Application

 plus a restart.

This got me the bluetooth icon to show up in the message center, but clicking on it did nothing and there was still no bluetooth options in my settings.  Darn.

Checked device manager again.  Now it says that the Bluetooth driver (found now hidden under Software Devices as a single item) that the device didn't migrate.  Not really sure what that means.

The following method was attempted with no real knowledge of what I was doing.  Pretty regrettable.

5)Looked back in Services, back in "Bluetooth Support Service".  Tried setting it from "This account" to "Local Network".  Now that service won't start, displaying the error "Error 1079:  the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."  Well that's not good.

     a)  Tried setting the other Bluetooth related services to local (Bluetooth support service, OBEX service, Handsfree service, and Device monitor) to see if I could start the Support service again.  No dice.

b)tried to change Bluetooth Support Service Log on back to the "this account" option, however I don't know anything about what I'm doing at this point.  It requires an object name and a password.  I have no clue what its asking for.  Now I have irreversibly set it to local.

I am at the end of my rope and knowledge, there is nothing more that I'm finding that can help with my issue.  If somebody has read ALL OF THIS (I apologize by the way, I was just trying to be thorough of my mistakes and attempts), I already thank you for your time.  If you can help, then I'll be even more grateful.

Error Code 0xc0000225 Windows 8.1

I recently tried to start up my Dell Inspiron laptop and instead get this blue screen with:

Error code 0xc0000225

Blue Screen only gives me two options: Enter to try again or F8 for Startup Settings.

Elsewhere it says something about "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Trying again doesn't work as it still won't boot.  I tried to boot to Safe Mode, which also didn't work.  None of the Startup Settings seem to work.  I have a "Dell Operating System Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64-bit" recovery disk that was sent to me years ago for an unrelated problem.   I put it in the disk drive to see if I could boot from that but I don't even see the option and I can't see any way to get to a command prompt. Not sure if it would work for this problem.

I have no idea how to fix this.  I haven't installed any new hardware or software and I haven't been partitioning anything so I'm a bit puzzled as to what's going on.

After posting on the microsoft forums and attempting several fixes, nothing has changed.

I can't access the BIOS.  I have repeatedly tried pressing "F2" during startup (which, according to Dell is the correct key) and it does nothing.  It always comes back to blue screen.  So I can't even look at BIOS settings

I can't access built-in hard drive diagnostics.  I have pressed the correct keys (according to Dell) but it accomplishes nothing.  I end up back at blue screen.

I have no Windows installation disk.  Windows 8 came pre-loaded on the laptop.  All I have is my "Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64-bit" disk, which isn't an installation disk.  If I could get to a windows console, I would love to run any kind of scan, but I suspect if I could do that I would have been able to fix the problem in the first place.

I installed Dell's "Recovery & Restore" tool on a USB to boot from that, but when I press F12 to get boot options, the computer doesn't respond, just shoots me back to blue screen.  I have boot options on the blue screen.  None of those options actually work, which leads me to an endless cycle of restarting and blue screen.  Frustrating!

Can someone please help or do I need to take my laptop to a computer repair shop?  Thanks!

I have an Inspiron 1564  motherboard DAOUM3MB8EO, PWB 5X2FJ. Graphic card ATI radeon 5040.

its been a while my fan works with full power. then its been a week my laoptop starts with no screen display. I managed to get the display back with Dryer method form youtube over the graphic card. I am assuming if this issue goes on my graphic card will dye soon. Wondering if there would be any way to fix it? I cannot find my motherboard on ebay or anywhere else either to change it. I found DAOUM3MB6EO but not mine and not sure that will be interchangeable.

any one any suggestion to fix this issue?

TPM Security causing issue logging into windows

Hi I have a Dell E6430 laptop with windows 10.  For some time now I have a problem when my laptop is restarted. I get a message unable to join the domain (my computer name).  I am a home user on my network.  To solve this I have to go into the BIOS and TPM Security and randomly turn it off, restart, turn it on, restart and tick and untick boxes within tpm security.  On restart on login if it says initialising fingerprint reader then it will prompt me to put my windows password in and it will work.  The majority of the time it will not allow me to logon.  It will ask for my domain/username, I will put my name in and it will say invalid, I then as above have to keep going into tpm security and tick/untick.  Its never the same.  Yesterday it took 6 hours of unticking and ticking and one of the attempts it let me in.  Sorry I dont have all the exact error messages as I do not want to restart the machine again so I apologise if this is too vague.  I have had the laptop many years and I would say this started when the laptop was upgraded to windows 10.  I have written down many times what was ticked and unticked in TPM security to get the laptop started but unfortunately its never the same combination.

Yesterday took 6 hours, this morning somehow my laptop restarted overnight and came back to the same login page.  I went into TPM and deactivated and first go in let me in.  Whereas yesterday the final setting that let me in was activated...agghhhhhhh

Support contact?

Hi,

for quite some time now, I'm trying to figure out how to contact Dell about a question I have about their products. Now I found this:

https://marketing.dell.com/de/nav/sb/contact-expert

However, the form doesn't submit, when I click "next", I always stay at step #1 (both with Chrome and IE11).

This is all very tedious as I have a very simple inquiry about a product. Isn't there some sort of a mail address such as support@dell.com I could use?

Thanks.

Hi

I have just recieved my new Dell E7470, at some reason it is preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but the installation disc/recovery disc provided, is windows 10 pro, and there is a big white line accros the disc, that says "already installed on your computer". but since my computer is running windows 7 that is clearly not the case

What is the deal with that, and how do I get windows 10 Pro on my computer, i would use the provided dvd-rom, but there is no optical drive?

PS why even provide dwd installation disc with a computer that does not have a optical drive?

DELL Latitude E6400

I'm looking into buying an affordable small travel notebook/laptop. My budget is fairly low, only consisting of a few hundred Dollars.

I have found this specification list from a local used store:

www.secondhand.nz/.../

I haven't found any new condition sellers so far. Also, a few questions I had were:

- Is this notebook capable of running Windows 10?

- As I'm a designer, can this notebook run Photoshop cloud edition?

- Is shipping notebooks overseas possible and safe?

it is really hard for me to determine what's wise or not. Because I'm inexperienced in the hardware field.

Scrolling issues when content is loading XPS 15 (9530)

I'm running windows 10 AU and I'm having  a lot of issues with webpages that load dynamic content.

The scrolling will just not register while content is loading.  This results in a terrible user experience as scrolling will stutter or freeze completely while viewing wepages that load content on demand.

This occurs with 2 finger scroll as well as using a mouse.

I contacted microsoft and the said it was a dell issue.
