RAM configuration problem - Dell Precision 3510

I ordered the Precision 3510 laptop with the Intel® Core™ Xeon E3-1505M v5. When I was configuring this laptop, it says that ECC memory is required and choosing a non-ECC memory makes a message pop up saying the selected memory is incompatible with the processor.

For saving money, I ordered this laptop with 8GB of ECC memory (4GB X2) as configured from Dell. Then, I ordered this RAM kit from Crucial to upgrade the laptop:

Installing both Crucial memory sticks (replacing the 2 OEM 4gb sticks) results in the computer booting up with amber blinking pattern 2,5 indicating invalid memory installed. See page 62 of the owner's manual:

However, booting with just one stick of 16GB memory does not result in any problems and the system is able to post and load into the OS, which recognizes 16GB installed.

I am aware that the Crucial memory I purchased is 2400Mhz and the configurations from Dell for this laptop only list 2133 Mhz RAM. This does not seem to be an issue though considering the laptop is able to boot up with 16GB of 2400Mhz ECC just fine. Furthermore, this system is capable of handling 32GB according to the owner's manual and memory configuration options from Dell's ordering site:

Please advise on how to allow this machine to boot with two sticks of 16GB 2400Mhz ECC. If this is not possible, would this memory kit be compatible with this machine with the selected processor mentioned above? It is 2133Mhz, but non-ECC.

A while back i got a inspiron 1750  laptop as part of a school certification in rubyonrails.

This was 2010 or so.

The bummer is as i understood this was a 64bit laptop.. but the school wouldnt let dell put a vista64 on it.. only vista32) ..they also previously wouldnt give us Apple laptops.

Anyway,,  just to see if it would work,.. I put win10 on it.. (but of course its not licensed) ..
But i already have a tablet and a desktop both that are win10 (tablet is a surfacepro3 and desktop is a very new win7deskttop that was easy to go to win10.

Anyway, I have dvd for slackware and a dvd for mint18-cinnemon (spelling i know)

Im having problems with getting the built in wireless to work as it did previously.

In fact it worked win i had vista32 and a older linux .... dual boots usualy seem to make things work easier.

So I know linux will work on the laptop in a dualboot..      Any linux related advise as far as drivers??

.. im going to try the linux forum suggestions i have...

Im not going to buy a new laptop... my tablet is in fact has more ram and more power and more hd..   but  do figure on doubling the ram on the laptop..and maybe even chk into having a ssd in the laptop.. ?

How to determine to cause of overheating

I have the problem that when the weather is hot the laptop starts acting super slow mo after about 10 minutes after start up. I have a E6400 with a 2.93Ghz cpu, 256 onboard NVIDIA video and 4GB of RAM. I bought this used on eBay 2 years ago and am only now discovering why it is overheating.

I run Windows XP SP3 on it and I know that it is this laptop that is having problems because when I used the same hard drive on my D630 I had it heatup just as much(as hot) but it did not slow down in performance. I had it running for a day during our last hot spell with no hint of overheating. Unlike the D630 of the bottom surface being hot enough to fry an egg on half of the bottoms surface from the location of the cpu and to the middle, the E6400 is only hot where the ROM drive is.

I had taken the back panel off thinking that it would resolve the heat problem but after checking the fan area, re-applying the caked and cracked thermal grease on the cpu I discovered that the problem was not the cpu overheating. I did notice that when I touched the cpu's heat sink that it was cooler to the touch(it was warm before but was now cool, as though it wasn't transferring any heat) after replacing the thermal grease but I noticed that the heat from this machine was coming either from the ROM or from whatever is under the ROM drive.

The bios version of this machine is A28.

Any ideas how I can diagnose what the problem is? I am guessing that the processors in my D630's is actually a good thing for the hot weather(2Ghz, 2.4Ghz). They all run Windows XP SP3.

When we had the hot weather(35C/95F) I loaded RealTemp and it was telling me the cpu was running at 35C. The ROM area (bottom of the ROM that can be touched with the bottom plate of the laptop removed)was very hot. As hot as the D630 @2.4Ghz. I am testing it today with the temperature at 20C/68F and watching a movie while downloading stuff and the heat sync of the cpu is actually running hot with what shows as 10% of the CPU being used in the Task Manager.

Refurb M7510 - Is Windows booting off of the hard-drive instead of the SSD?

$

Hi,

I just received a refurbished M7510, that has a 256GB SSD installed and a 1TB hard drive.  It has Windows 10 Pro installed.

I noticed that the C: drive is the 1TB hard drive, and the D: drive is the 256GB SSD.

Does that mean that the machine is booting off of the 1TB hard drive?

Is that normal for a Dell M7510?

I'm kind of assuming that the C: drive should be the SSD and the D: drive should be the 1TB hard drive?

How can I re-configure it so that the SSD is the boot (and C:) drive?

Thanks,

Jim

New XPS 13 1080p touchscreen?

I am seeing an XPS 13 1080p / FHD touchscreen on dell.com and the microsoft store websites.  When did this come out?  I don't see any info or reviews online.  I'm wondering if it has a matte screen, and how the battery life compares to the QHD+ and 1080p non-touch versions.

Boot Automatically to Diagnostic Tools

Inspiron 13 - 5368 - Win 10

Had it serviced by Dell (new motherboard).

On return, it always boots automatically to the Diagnostic Tools on cold boot (not on Restart) and starts the bevy of tests.

I cannot figure out how to take off this auto-boot.  Nothing in the F2 Setup screen does it,  not General-Boot Sequence, not General-Advanced Boot Options, not SupportAssist System Resolution.

Help, please!

Just reset Windows 10 after a bad "update". When I reboot my laptop on the Dell Screen and in bios my keyboard is bright as can be.  As soon as it boots into Windows 10 the backlight disappears and won't come back on at all.  I tried the Windows Mobility settings and there is no option for the backlight. I tried the FN + F10 toggle and all of the other toggles possible but none are working.  I updated all of the drivers and still can't get the backlight to come back on.  Any help is appreciated.

Just purchased a XPS 15 and have a few questions about the Dell WD15 180W Docking Station.

Will the docking station charge the XPS 15 while docked through USB-C with multiple external monitors connected?

Is the mini DisplayPort  version 1.2 and able to daisy chain monitors?

What is the best way to get the most performance out of my laptop without spending a lot of money and voiding the warranty?

Does it make a difference to have most of my files on a external hard drive vs. my internal drive?

I would also like to know how to find out which drivers I currently have installed vs. the ones I do not.

Thanks for you time and effort.   I just want to maximize my computers capabilities.

Inspiron 15(7559) Completely Freezes, can't turn off

Hi,

I bought a Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) less than a month ago. Today, when I was playing an online game, the keyboard suddenly stopped responding while game is still otherwise running perfectly with mouse still responding. After about 30 seconds, the laptop freezes, with sound still playing and fans running at high speed.

After about 5 minutes, game music stopped and turned into a light buzzing sound, fans still running at high speed.  I tried to press the power button to force shut down but had no effect after faithfully holding it down for a good 1 minute.

The laptop is still buzzing right now and it has been an hour. I will have to wait until the battery is dead.

My question is, what the heck is wrong with this practically brand new laptop? I don't want a buzzing heater on my desk, not at this price. :(

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

7537 Won't Charge or Boot

My 7537 is 20 months old and out of warranty.  I use it just a few times a year.  I recently pulled it out, charged it to 100% and started using it.  After a few minutes connected to WiFi, a Dell update notice popped up and I accepted the update and continued working.  I left it on overnight, and the next morning, the screen was black with a notice that the battery was low and would shut down, which it did.  I attempted to charge the battery, and it would not charge and the battery light would not illuminate. The battery charged a day earlier...but not today for some reason.

I tried every troubleshooting item I could google: different outlets, blew canned air into the charger port, removed the battery, held down the power button for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 3 minutes.  I removed the memory, removed the Hard Drive, removed the CMOS battery (and drained residual power), and attempted to restart with various items removed, and then also re-seated.  Nothing.

If I try to start with the battery connected, the keyboard lights up and the fans run for about 3 seconds...then they just stop. The screen stay black.  If I try to start without the battery but with power supply connected, absolutely nothing happens.  Nothing runs, nothing beeps...nothing.

I purchased another power supply thinking that was the obvious problem... but that did not help.  At this point, I believe the issue is either with the Motherboard or the charger port, but I do wonder if the Dell update that ironically coincided with this issue could have anything to do with it. I would appreciate any insights.  My next step is to replace the charger port since that is relatively cheap.  If that doesn't work, the Motherboard will be a costly attempt to fix.

My 7537 was running normally and charging normally last a few days ago.

Phone call scams-Received fraudulent phone call from 18883113841 claiming to be a dell tech support.

Received fraudulent phone call from 18883113841 claiming to be a dell tech support who later started verbally abusing and cursing. Seems like info has been stolen from Dell. Dell is not taking responsibility and leaving it's customer vulnerable that undermines the trust on the entire Dell company. Who would like to buy from Dell knowing that privacy will be compromised? On behalf of all affected customers, I request Dell to provide the affected customer necessary safeguards to help rebuild the customers trust on Dell by acknowledging their sufferings. Thank you very much.

3rd party downloads windows 7

Hi everyone, where do I start.

Recently I bought a refurbished Dell latitude e6320 with windows 7 pro, all worked well until windows 10 self installed. At first it worked well until the freezing started which at that point I couldn't roll back to windows 7.

I tried downloading windows 7 from Microsoft but wasn't able to I tried downloading it from Dell support but my laptop wouldn't register (a lot of people had the same issue) I tried chrome, internet explorer and Mozilla nothing would allow me to register the system in the 3rd party section. I don't understand why it needs to check the system before download if the system service tag has already been added to my account. Anyway long story short I am no longer able to use my dell laptop to access the Dell website. Can some one please help me I need to get the windows 7 installation files and drivers for my laptop.

I've tried downloading then through another laptop HP but the web site won't allow it because it's not a Dell.

Latitude E7440 display problems when using dock (external displays going black)

Hello,

I'm using a Latitude E7440 with a Dock and two monitors connected to it. (Both with DVI)

Sporadically (often already shortly after starting the laptop) one or both of the monitors are going black for about 5 and come back after.

I already tried several things to fix the issue but haven't been able to find a solution yet.

What I've tried so far:

  • Update to latest BIOS
  • Use different display driver
  • Used a different dock
  • Mainboard replacement
  • Installed latest MST HUB FIrmware
  • Disabled Display Port in the monitor settings

At this point I don't know what else to do to fix this issue and I'd really appreciate any help from others.

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable error.

Hi guys,

I recently bought an Inspiron 5559 (4 weeks ago) with Windows 10 Home.

I installed a 'Dell' update two days ago in which the laptop automatically downloaded, and now my laptop won't boot to Windows.

I am getting the above message, 'PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable.'

Also with a 'PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.' and 'No boot device found. Press any key to reboot the machine.'

I have read multiple threads on forums with no fix. Now this issue only started once I installed the 'Dell' update so I'm assuming it's because of that. I checked the BIOS and the laptop was attempting to boot from a disk drive, which I changed to the HDD, with no result.

I performed a system diagnostic and it said everything was fine, as I thought maybe the HDD had died..

Now I have played around with it, pressed 'f12' and tried a manual boot from the Partition drive.. And Windows started! So I can get back into Windows, hadn't lost anything, and all is fine. Until I turn the laptop off, and it does the same again, until I go in manually and boot from the partition drive.

Does anyone have a better, more permanent, fix for me please??
