What is the touchpad on the Dell Latitude E7270?

Hello,

The touchpad on the Dell Latitude E7270 is not properly detected with Ubuntu 16.04. It is only detected as a "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse".

The touchpad works, but there is no possible configuration about it.

I can't find what is the brand/model of the touchpad, it doesn't seem to be a Synaptics. Do you know by any chance what is the brand/model of the touchpad and/or if there is any driver for Ubuntu?

Thanks!

E5570 Latitude Windows 10 Bitlocker Issue

Recently received a new batch of Latitude  E5570 Laptops. Did my normal thing of applying a Win10-VL image, activating bitlocker post install and everything normally runs fine on all my other Latitudes (E5550,E5540, etc.)

However, the following behaviors now occurs:

Scenario 1. User undocks laptops, takes home and turns on at home. 25-50% of the time, the computer prompts for the Bitlocker Recovery Key even though nothing has changed except for the laptop being undocked.  The more unusual behavior is that if we shut the computer down and leave it alone for a few minutes, then turn back on, the computer loads properly without a Bitlocker Recovery prompt.

Scenario 2. User has been using undocked laptop at home. Brings back into office, docks laptop, turns laptop on, is prompted for Bitlocker Recovery Key. If we turn the laptop off, wait a few minutes and power cycle on, the laptop then boots properly.  In a few occasions, even a few minutes makes no difference and the recovery key is still requested. We undock the laptop, power it on and windows loads fine. We then redock it while the laptop is on and then with successive reboots, power off and on have no issues.

I've already tried to swap out different docks, tried different E5570 laptops, tried different monitor setups, different SSD e-Drives,  (Tried with no USB devices attached as well), all to no avail.

Tested on BIOS Versions: 1.7.3, 1.05.00, 1.04.07 (All we with the same results). Anyone else seeing this type of behavior? It's not back breaking, but have not had this issue with any of our other Latitude series laptops.

Dell XPS 15 9343

Have new Dell laptop XPS 13 9343, with battery drain problem since day 1, drops from 100% to 80% overnight. Came with windows 8, but I updated to windows 10 right away, so not sure if this was happening from the word go.

The laptop is a bit warm on the underside first thing in the morning, so something is drawing power in the shut down state. Turned of fast boot and looked at bios changing anything that may looks like it may be causing a problem. Lap top just cannot seem to switch off !!

Updated bios and all drivers, as suggested on forum doing search for peolple with similar issues.

Seems to be a problem with intel MEI - and causes same issue on lots of laptops, not just Dell.

Unable to downgrade intel MEI to version 9 from 11 as I get error message something like "Thiscomputer does not meet minimum requirements for installing this driver".

Have zip file - MEI_Win7_8_8.1_9.5.24.1790_5.0M - how can I install (roll back greyed out as I assume 11 is what I have always had.

Could take battery out every night, but bit of a hassle I can do without !

What can I do ? Anyone else with this laptop have this issue ??

Thanks for any help, in advance.

So, I'm told my 17" Inspiron that I got my wife for Chirstmas in '14, that *** out (diagnosed as a mother-board in the spring of '16; count that 1.5 years of very easy use), that I saved the $300 for the repair (quoted after about an hour on the phone with support back in April), and spent two hours so far on support to get this detail and that, that I left two voice mails over the past month with no return call, ONLY TO FIND OUT AT THE LAST MINUTE BEFORE THEY SEND THE BOX FOR THE REPAIR, THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE MOTHER-BOARD IN STOCK!!!!!  AND CAN'T TELL ME WHEN OR IF THEY WILL GET MORE!!!  Does anyone at Dell care?  I've been a Dell guy for years, guess I'll look at HP's!!!!!!!!!

Disable amber light above trackpad

I have a Dell Inspiron R15 that I bought four years ago. Upgraded to Windows 10.

This  afternoon I come home and I see a message that Windows has installed some updates. I now notice this annoying amber light above my trackpad. I've never seen this light on before, wasn't even aware it was there.

Looking it up, apparently this light is on to let you know that the Dell trackpad driver is installed and the trackpad is activated. This is weird, because this light has never been on ever, and my trackpad has always worked. Docs say to use FN-F3 to turn the light off, which also turns off the trackpad.

This is annoying.

I looked through this new driver functionality and it has a bunch of nifty options and gestures that I will never use. So I'd like to be rid of all of this and go back to my perfectly functioning trackpad without annoying amber light distracting me while I work. Except when I try to uninstall it I get an error message that the specified module could not be found.

So how do I set this back to the way it was this morning?

Can someone please tell me what make/model the touchpad is for the Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop?  Mine only has generic Windows drivers and I want to make sure there aren't better drivers out there.  I didn't see any listed on the Dell Support page for driver downloads.  Thanks.

Frozen Hard Drive Password Problem Solved

$

I have a Dell Studio 1640 XPS I bought in 2009.  It is an older machine but still runs reasonably well.

Right after purchase I set a HD password in the Phoenix BIOS.

About 4 years ago I was looking in the BIOS and noticed that the HD password was frozen.  I had done nothing that I could recall which would have caused this freeze.  I could not figure out how to unfreeze it.  I was told that Lojack caused the problem, but after discussing this problem with Lojack, I was certain that Lojack was not to blame.  Because I wanted the hard drive to be password protected, which it was, I decided to ignore the problem.

Recently my HD started to shows signs of failure.  Index corruption and significant hesitancy in saving work or moving files made me purchase an SSD to replace the conventional HD.  I used EaseUS (EXCELLENT back up software I highly recommend) to back up the failing HD sector by sector, including the MBF (master boot record).  EaseUS did a great job, but when I rebooted the computer after the old HD OS and data were transferred to the SSD, the boot up did not require entering a hard drive password.  Because I am required to password protect my hard drive I needed to solve this problem.

I went into the Bios/Security and could only set the Supervisor password which protected the access to the BIOS.  It did not change the status of the frozen HD password.  Because I didn't want the BIOS password protected, I removed the Supervisor password.  I thought I was not going to be able to solve this problem so I called Dell out of warranty service and the technician asked me to look at the BIOS and describe the problem.  When I went into the BIOS, to my total surprise, I found the Password was no longer frozen.  I was able to set the password, clear it, and set it again.  This resulted in the password being set on the hard drive and for that last multiple boots the computer has required entering the password before getting access to the hard drive.  It did not revert to a frozen password state in the BIOS so far.

So here was the sequence and good luck to anyone suffering from the same problem:

How to reset a frozen HD password in the (Phoenix) BIOS.

Remove the battery. Run computer from the power supply.

Enter a system password in BIOS and save it on exit.

Shut down computer from Windows after boot up.

Reboot the computer and enter the BIOS.

Delete the System password. Let the computer boot into Windows.  Then Shut down the computer from Windows again.

On next reboot enter the BIOS.  The frozen HD password should be cleared.  If it is set, clear it and reset it.  If it is not set, try setting the HD Password again.

Reboot.  The HD should now be password protected.  (My BIOS states that the supervisor password can not be set if the hard drive password is set.)

Reboot to confirm the HD password is set. There should be a requirement that the password be entered before the HD allows access to booting up the operating system.

Dell Vostro 1510 does not restart after motherboard replacing (said processor issue!?)

Dears,

I have an issue with my laptop (dell vostro 1510). For the second time my screen became completely black. I could see nothing but the computer was working. I supposed it was for the same reason as the first time (video board burnt). I substitute it and when I try to start the laptop I just get three led among which the first one on the left is blinking. It doesn't go further and I don't have access to the bios. The diagnostic led codes say that it is a problem related to the processor. How can I test if the processor works? For me it is weird that with the old motherboard it was starting. I also tried to reset the processor on the slot different times. I don't know what to try more.

If you have any suggestion please let me know

Have a great day

USB-C (Thunderbolt) port not working

Hello

I own a Dell xps 13 9350 laptop.
I'm trying to connect an external monitor through the Thunderbolt 3 port, with a USB-C to VGA adapter, but the laptop does not recognize that I've connected an external device at all.

I suspect that maybe I'm missing a driver, I've tried installing Intel(R) Thunderbolt(TM) Controller Driver: "Chipset_Driver_D91CC_WN32_16.1.47.275_A02.EXE"
but it was no good, still not working.

How can I troubleshoot this? Could it be a different driver that's missing?

Thanks

Hi,

My Laptop is giving sound as TUK TUk TUK and with blank screen.

After several restarts only it is starting.I searched here for answer and all are asking is it two times tuk sound or 3 times. For my laptop it is continuously giving the sound.

I Heard that is common problem for Inspiration 3521 models and i am able to see the posts from 2007 and Still Dell not found any permanat solution for this instead of changing Mother board which costs 10k.

Can you please help me to understand why this problem occurs and how it can resolve with out changing Mother board.

Thanks,

Purnachandu
