Optimus Settings: power setting choices for increased performance

Original Question: Optimus Settings: power setting choices for increased performance, 9/21/2012 byDELL-Terry B

There have been a number of threads regarding the performance of Optimus systems while playing 3D extensive programs and games.

Notebooks with Nvidia GPUs (Graphic Processing Unit) may have a feature called Optimus.  These systems have in fact two different video solutions, and integrated Intel GPU and a more powerful discreet Nvidia GPU.  In Optimus systems to conserve battery power the integrated Intel GPU is the default graphics solutions and will be used on most situations. Dynamically when the system detects programs that require more extensive graphics power, the system should switch the GPU to the discreet Nvidia GPU. For more on what Optimus does please check the following link from Nvidia.

Be sure to check out Nvidia's FAQ on Optimus.

For more information on the Optimus how to's especially for Dell systems check out this great article

You may want a bit more control and wish to manually decide what GPU to use.  I am including the method that you can go into the Nvidia Control Panel to manually select the Nvidia GPU globally to become the default GPU.

Selecting a Preferred Graphics Processor

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel

* Select Manage 3D Settings

* Under the Global Settings tab, select High-performance NVIDIA processor

* Click Apply

You don't have to select the Nvidia GPU as the default GPU, you can also assign it for your individual games or programs that you feel require the extra power.

Assigning an application or program to the Graphics Processor

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel

* Select Manage 3D Settings

* Click on the Program Settings tab

* In 1: Select a program to customize, click on Add

* Browse to the application/game and open the executable file by clicking Open

* In 2: Select the preferred graphics processor for this program, click on the tab and select High Performance NVIDIA processor

* Click on Apply and the settings will be saved

Creating Optimus Settings for a New Program:

  1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Select Manage 3D Settings.
  3. Select Program Settings tab.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Browse to and select the application executable file that needs the new profile.
  6. Choose the preferred graphics processor to use from the drop menu.

This should give you further control on your notebook, choosing when to conserve battery power when the extra GPU strength is not needed and being able to assign the Nvidia GPU when the power is needed.

Upgraded Memory Won't boot (screen goes black with white lines)

I have an Inspiron 11.  Last night I upgraded the memory to 8gb (Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT102464BF160B) and when I try to boot, it won't bring up Windows...the screen looks like it freezes.  I've tried the diagnostics, same problem.  It's not at a consistent time.  Sometimes it goes a little further, but it never makes it to the Windows screen.  Once I put back the old memory it works fine.  I get that it's a memory problem, but I thought I read that the memory I purchased worked for others.  So I'm wondering if there's something I can do to get it to work for me.

I'm not a technical guy (as your probably figured out).  Just a guy who likes to screw around and learn.

thak you

Need Help Resolving Repair Issue

I ordered a Dell Inspiron 15-5559 on 6/1.  I received it on 6/10.  It worked fine for about an hour before  the screen went blank.  After a long conversation with tech support I returned the defective laptop to Dell the next day.  It arrived back at Dell on 6/16 and quickly the status was updated to repair on hold, parts not available.

Since then I have had nothing but frustrating conversations via several avenues trying to get more information.  It seems unbelievable that Dell does not seem to know when they will receive the parts (or at least they will not tell me).  Everyone says they will check and then comes back and tells me the parts are not available and they will let me know when the status changes.

I am hoping someone who monitors this forum can help me get in contact with someone who can actually give me an estimated timeline.  At this point I am considering pursuing a return of the system and going elsewhere, if I cannot get either my computer back or a replacement unit within a week or so.

Dell Vostro 5470 Battery Charging Disabled. How to enable?

Hi all,

So few days ago I have noticed that my Dell Vostro 5470 not charging. It says plugged in, not charging. And sadly it is 0%, so I can't really drain the power, as I've read in some forums. As well, Vostro battery is not portable, that makes things even worse.

As I have noticed, the error accured after one of Windows update (I currently have Windows 10). Before I closed it (sleep) and left it for sometime running on low battery, so still don't know what what the real issue.

I ran Dell Service test  (40min.), which said all is fine - battery is good. Also this show battery is good:

Please help me find the solution, as I am currently not in my home country and laptop is quite needed.

Thanks,
Kamile

I have multiple Dell Chromebook 11s that will not hold charge. The percentage stays at 1% and it will shut off if the charger is removed. I have tried replacing the battery, motherboard, and charging port but nothing works. When I try the battery_test in crosh I receive the message

[0621/134126:WARNING:power_supply.cc(970)] Ignoring probably-bogus zero battery percentage

I don't know what else to try.

M3800 Dead?? Won't Power On - 11 Days AFTER warranty expired

A year ago this month, June 2015, I PURCHASED a  M3800. I emphasize "purchase" as the laptop wasn't shipped until July 20th.    I have had recurring problems with start up from the get go - Sometimes it would start up, sometimes not.  Often times, removing any USB attachments and/or holding down the power button for 10 seconds resolved it.  While it was on, it worked like a champ. LOVED IT!  By Dec 2015 it died. Contacted Dell support, shipped the M3800 back and within 10 days, received my M3800 with a replacement motherboard.  Well, it's now June 21st, 11 days past my warranty  and guess what? DEAD ... Well, not entirely, the power button LED lights up momentarily when I press it.   I've tried multiple solutions, including removing the battery to eliminate static electricity, and still nothing. Any ideas would be seriously appreciated. Thanks heaps!

Re-installation of Data Protection|Access

Base line: Dell Laptop, Latitude E6430

Windows: 10

Detail: Upgraded from 8 to 10 and like it,  Had some issues with drivers not working such as SD reader, and DVD drive but were easy to fix.  Tried to get finger print reader to work and the icon called DDPA errors with "Your USH firmware is not up to date...".  I have downloaded the most recent files (3 of them) which are: Data Protection| Encryption, Data Protection| Security tools, Data Protection| Endpoint Security Suite.

I'm not sure all or some should be installed, and if so which order and do I include a re-boot each time.

Any help here will make be a happy user.  Thanks in advance.

Dell Inspiron n5010 LCD Sometimes Working

My Dell Inspiron n5010 (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit) sometimes works, but then it doesn't.

When I boot it up, it beeps 8 times repeatedly. So, I try connecting it to an external monitor. It works on the monitor, but the laptop still beeps 8 times. Then, after fiddling around for a bit, it restarts, and just works on the laptop fine.

Anybody got any ideas?
