Usb3 disk transfer stall

$

Hi

I have a shiny new inspiron 7559, everything updated, nothing weird done to the system (windows 10, the stock install even minus the junkware I don't need), etc.

For some reason a lot of usb disks fail to work: transfers stall and interrupt more than they actually transfer.

In more detail:

I have 3 plain disks of various age and type (one's a hybrid sshd or something). I also have a few ready-made usb3 disks (i.e. disks in a prefab casing). Lastly, I have a plain naked usb3/sata adapter, and a few usb3/sata adapters with a casing (the so-called full enclosures).

When I plug the disks into the naked adapter and test a large transfer, everything works flawlessly. The regular pre-assembled disks have also always worked flawlessly.

For some reason however, when I put the plain disks into empty enclosures I got from my favorite store, I get the problem described above: transfers stall completely after merely a few megabytes and general write speed goes as low as 2MB/s when they do work.

I initially thought the enclosures were defective, so I returned them and got different ones from a different brand. With the new ones, the exact same thing happened. And now today, I brought those back to the store too and bought new ones from yet another brand. Exactly. The same. Problem.

I then got fed up with it and plugged these malfunctioning disks/enclosures into another, 3 year old laptop: not a flaw to be found.

I've tried reinstalling intel's silly "rapid storage" and "serial i/o" drivers, but of course to no avail (honestly, I've never seen any of intel's software actually do anthing useful or agreeable).

Since my disks and all my enclosures are proven to work just fine, as are my usb ports, I have to conclude there's some sort of incompatiblity between an alarming number of plain harddrive enclosures and this laptop's usb ports.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to figure this out, please?

Could dell perhaps look into this too? For a machine I paid almost a month's net salary for, I expected better than to face one ridiculous issue atfer another.

Nvidia temperature jump

Hello,  i have DELL N5110 with NVIDIA GT 525m video card.
Few months ago i notice that after 5-6 minutes playing (counter strike 1.6 for example) laptop turns off.
I started to monitor GPU temperature whicj was about 70 degrees and after 5-6 minutes it jumps to 95 degrees and than every second raises for 1 degree until it comes to 100 degrees and laptop shut down.

I changed thermal paste on CPU and GPU and cleaned fan!
Playing temperature was 64 degrees, but after 5-6 minutes temperature jumps again to 95 and soon laptop turns off.

I tried  windows 7 and windows 8.1, i tried latest drivers and 1 year old drivers, the problem stays!

What could be the problem?

Latitude e6440 With Boot/Stability Problems

Video of diagnostic tool running which ends in problem discussed below (actual boot starts around 0:50): (Please visit the site to view this video)

System Specs: Dell e6440 laptop i5 processor (4th gen with integrated graphics) 500gb hard drive 4gb RAM Windows 10 64 bit (upgraded from Windows 7 professional 64 bit) Connected to Dell Pro2x dock with dual monitors until trouble started

What I would like to do: fix a problem this pc has with powering on and remaining on and stable. Currently cuts off for unknown reasons.

The background: I found this computer in a thrift store without a hard drive and apparently having suffered a fall which damaged the outer shell. The internals still worked so I picked it up to work on as a project. I ordered an eBay lot of parts including a new top shell, motherboard... mounting shell? And a new motherboard and bottom cover.

Two weeks ago I disassembled the original unit and reassembled it with all the new parts and it seemed to go pretty well. I was able to install Ubuntu and mess around with that os. I am more of a Windows guy however and last weekend I downloaded an oem Dell Windows 7 image which (probably... I checked with Dell customer support for what was originally on the laptop) matched the license on the machine. I used poweriso to make a bootable usb, and installed it on the laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Dell and tried to install them in the correct order. Things more or less went alright. It was running Windows 7, then I updated to Windows 10 on Monday night, then installed Steam on Tuesday night and downloaded Civilization 5.

The Problems: the first major problem I noticed was that during the Civilization 5 download the speed of the download would drop to zero and then jump back to anywhere between around 100kbps an 3mbps. I turned off the monitors connected to the pro2x docking station and went to bed. A few hours later I checked on the download and it had finished. I went back to bed, but then when I checked it in the morning I couldn't seem to get it to wake up from sleep. I chose to leave it alone and come back that night after work (now it is Wednesday).

Returning that night I found it would no longer send any video signal through the docking station. I took it off the station and then found I couldn't get it to boot properly. The power would turn on but most of the time the screen seemed to not turn on. When it did it would start to boot but turn off only partway through the process. Pulling the battery and clearing the remaining charge by holding down the power button for thirty seconds or so provided the best result when it finally managed to boot into Windows, but it ran slowly and black command prompt style windows opened before any program or utility showed on the screen, then the power would once again cut off.

Booting into safe mode gives the same result. Booting into the bios utility gives the same result. I have swapped out the RAM and gotten the same result. I swapped out the hard drive and got the same result. I checked that the heat sink was properly contacting the CPU and am pretty sure that is alright as well.

This morning I turned it on and ran the bios Diagnostic utility until it cut off and recorded the results using my phone and plenty of seemingly heavy breathing. The good stuff starts at about 50 seconds in. As you can see, when the screen cuts off the fans keep going.

Things I have yet to try: swapping the original motherboard back in (I'd rather not as it has a bios password set up that isn't going anywhere)

Things I suspect might be the problem: Corrupted bios due to bad update install by me Bad CPU Bad motherboard Virus from Windows 7 install (would this effect even the diagnostic tool?) Overheating problem Improper timing of recent sacrificial offerings to Poseidon

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I am a fairly technical person who can follow instructions well enough. Thanks for reading this extremely long post!

Problems using Netgear USB adapter on B130 with Windows 7

Hello Community:

I can't get my Netgear N900 USB adapter to work on my B130 with Windows 7 installed.  The N900 shows up in the device manager and says that everything is OK and that the driver is up to date.  The N900 installs when Windows boots up.  I have removed the WiFi card that came with the laptop and removed the Broadcom manager as the N900 didn't  work when I had it installed.  When I run the Win 7 diagnostics it says there is a problem with the adapter.  says driver problem.

Can anyone help me out. I am stuck with the B130 until I can save up enough money to buy a better system.

Inspiron 3420

Hello Dell community,

I bought this Inspiron 3420 few years ago. Suddenly, my laptop started heating up so quickly.
I opened it up and cleaned the fan (I followed the instructions from the manual)
Now I just saw that I only have 2GB of RAM! (I knew this before, but I forgot)
I cleaned the fan, found out that my thermal paste is completely gone, or scattered/applied in the wrong place (It was all around except the silver square thing.) I cleaned that too and since I don't have any thermal paste at the moment I just left it be.

Now, my problem is, I don't know which Memory RAM stick I should get or where to get it.
I don't know how GB of ram should I get. How do I properly make it work? Would it still work even if I change my OS? Please help me. Thank you so much.

The TB15 does not work with the XPS15.

I have an XPS15 + TB15 and I have been unable to connect even a simple wireless mouse through one of the USB ports on the dock -- with two separate units (I was shipped a "replacement unit"). This is amazing as it essentially proves that DELL cannot deliver on the most basic dock functionality. I even have an L2 level tech on record as saying that: "some of the functionality of the device are somewhat non-functional as of the moment." I am really impressed with DELL's ability to get the idea that the TB15 was ready for prime time through "demos" at all the trade shows and industry rags. Well done to the PR department. As a result, I now have $3K worth of laptop which is significantly hobbled by the lack of a proper dock (and of course the whole silliness with the "nostril-cam" -- we get it, you have no bezel, but guess what, putting the builtin webcam at the bottom of the screen means you have no bezel and no functional webcam either). I should've waited for the Skylake Macbook Air...

Power Companion with Latitute E7240 - Distorted Sound

I just received a Dell Power Companion (12,000 MAh) - when I boot up with the power companion attahced I receive the message "a 35w power adapter has been detected....<and something about lower than 65w required>" If I continue, the battery icon shows "plugged in, not charging" but the biggest problem is that an sound that comes from speakers is now distorted.

Does anybody have any ideas about these issues?

Windows 7 Enterprise, Latitute E7240

thanks,

Adrian

Inspiron N5010 has power and connectivity issues

I bought this Inspiron N5010 in its current hobbled condition. The laptop will not power on with battery inserted, simply no response to the power button. Only with battery removed and connected to mains with power adapter will the laptop power on. Only one of the three front lights will illuminate, namely, the hard drive light (white). Neither the Power light nor the Battery light will ever illuminate. After the laptop is booted up with mains power, the battery can be inserted, and then the mains removed. The battery will charge if the mains is left inserted. Running on battery power only, the laptop can be restarted, but if I shut down the laptop and wait over 20 seconds to power on again, it will not power on, and I must remove battery, connect mains to power it on again, that is, it reverts to the original error condition.

I replaced the I/O Board located in the back right corner. This did not fix anything. The I/O Board has a small wireless card on it DW 1501. I tried to install the Dell driver for this device, but no hardware was detected. Same detection failure for wired ethernet which also resides on this I/O board. No network has ever been detected.

The motherboard is DP/N 0Y6Y56. I am aware of at least three different mobos for this laptop, Y6Y56, 52F31, and BR0GW. It's common knowledge that the graphics chip has issues, due to poor solders and/or heating from heavy graphics. I was advised to buy the board with the ATI graphics chip. Then I learned I apparently misheard the advice and I should instead buy the board with Intel HD graphics chip. For this hard-to-find Intel HD Graphics chip I was directed to the BR0GW board, which costs around 120 USD. On closer inspection, however, the graphics chip on this board (BR0GW) is the same chip on the current misbehaving board (Y6Y56), namely, Intel BD82HM57 SLGZR. I have a feeling that neither of these two boards has the desired Intel HD Graphics chip. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. Is the Intel BD82HM57 a graphics chip, or does the graphics chip reside on the CPU processor proper?

What is wrong with this laptop? I think that replacing the motherboard would probably fix most of these problems. What is the best motherboard replacement for this laptop?

My inspiron 1525 stops working

I wrote "stops working" because it remains on, but eventually you'll hear the fatidic "click" on the left side of it and the activity light dies and you can do nothing else. The pointer might move, if there was a youtube video playing it will continue to play (I guess if it was loaded), but you can't do anything else. After the click, it's over. All you can do is force it off and turn it back on. Chkdsk has run, Avast check returns nothing, cooling paste is in place and so is the fan ad the ventilation system. It makes no difference what I'm doing at the moment, and for the record I do nothing too heavy here, no games or anything.

I'm on Vista and currently using Mozilla, but this happened with Chrome as well.

I'm not too keen on installing Dell System Detect. Any ideas?

Kill, kill, kill!

I have Windows 10 on a Dell 5755, with an AMD A8 Quad-core. Lately, all I see, no matter the site, is my "twirling;working circle. Eventually, I'll get the inevitable "kill, reload/aw snap!/send feedback" mini-window. I always have to use kill, then either use the back button, or reload, ( IF it's there ). Lately, that has been showing up with much less frequency. In simple terms, my pages refuse to load. Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

TB15, xps 9550 and UP2715K - 5k@60Hz?

If I buy XPS 9550 laptop, TB15 dock and UP2715K monitor how can I connect them to have 5k@60Hz?

The dock only has 1 mDP and 1DP ports and the monitor requires double DP cable.

I'm reading a lot of bad things about TB15 dock (cables disconnect, 9550 laptop fans make a lot of noise etc.). Is it even working or will I have such problems?

Latitude 3350 Bluetooth Stops Functioning

Every couple of months I have an issue with my Latitude 3550 laptop where the Bluetooth stops functioning out of the blue (pun kind of intended).  The error I get is:

Disabling / enabling or uninstalling /reinstalling the Bluetooth under Device Manager does not fix it.  Neither does reinstalling the driver.  So far the only thing I have found that resolves it is to update (or reapply) the latest BIOS firmware.  Then it works again for a couple of months.

Any reason that this would keep happening, or at least is there a lesser means to fix this issue?  Thanks for any input you may have!

I can't get the second monitor connected to the miniDP connection.  Otherwise, the docking station works fine for the most part.  Anyone have the laptop screen and 2 monitors running at the same time?

Ooops I thought I was replying in a TB15 thread.  Sorry, new to this forum.  This TB15 dock has been a real pain.
