I've been given an obscene budget for a new laptop, but will not go through *** with compatibility issues if I can avoid it.
I will P2V whatever it comes with, and run Linux as a base/host OS. Windows (due to the recent privacy problems with video monitoring, keyloggers sending home, etc.) will be relegated to a VM for safety purposes.
So is there anyone out there running a screaming 15" Dell laptop with Linux that is happy they did?

I've a inspiron 3542 and I've got the yellow exclamation point next to "SM Bus Controller" in my device manager. I downloaded the chipset driver and installed it but the exclamation is still there. Do I need a different driver? ANY help would be much appreciated!

As title suggests I have a few questions , and one is the location on back of laptop ( 17" where hdd goes in, it seems the hdd socket is facing up , is the normal ?
Wanted tobe sure that was right and that unit isn't defective in any way, as tray I'm trying to buy on ebay doesn't look right to me.

Computer Specs:
Dell Latitude E6420, Intel Core i5 2520M, 2x4GB=8GB RAM, Nvidia NVS 4200M, 250GB HDD, Win 7 Pro 64, Bios A23
Sata Operation set to AHCI and no fast boot. I have 3 of these computers. They are all out of Warranty.
I replaced the original 7mm Hitachi 250GB HDD for the Intel 535 240GB SSD.
I used Acronis True Image 2016 to clone the hdd to the ssd. Cloning process went just fine like on any other computer.
The Issue is that every 4 or 5 cold boots the computer cannot find the SSD. Rebooting the computer solves the issue that time. I have to find a solution. I want to sell them with an SSD and not with a HDD.
Things I have tried:
Updating Bios from A14 to A23.
Putting a 2mm spacer on the SSD and ofcourse reseating the SSD.
Swapping for another Intel 535 120GB and 240GB.
Clean install of windows which I knew was a waste of time as it doesnt affect BIOS not detecting things.
Googling the problem for hours.
Call dell?
Use another brand of SSD? It will probobly not make any difference from looking at other threads.
Use an HDD? Last resort. I cant stand the slowness of regular harddrives.
Can anyone tell me if the M14X R3 motherboard will fit in a M14X R2 computer. Thanks.

I received my XPS15 not so long ago and it has been working great (except for the occasional touchpad gesture issues). However, I received a DCP Watchdog Violation blue screen today. It is the first time this has happened. Any idea what could be causing it and how to fix ? I have the 512 gb SSD and am running Windows 10.

I bought 2 of these laptops, with Win 8.1 installed, and opened them both at Staples yesterday, to upgrade to Win 10. One just does the 5-times beep, and won't boot. The other upgraded easily - by the Staples tech.
5 beeps while booting indicates a possible dead CMOS battery, as per the Dell website.
How do I replace the CMOS battery? It looks like it's under the keyboard, and soldered to a wire. The battery is not under/behind that on-the-bottom removable panel.
Other people have posted about this problem, but there are no solutions posted.
Dell won't help me, as I can't find the receipt. They claim the unit shipped in late 2014, so its beyond any warranty period, anyway. Yes - they were unopened boxes until yesterday.

I bought a E6230 64-bit with Windows 7 Pro two months ago. I'm having problems trying to get the fingerprint software and tpm module to work. I also have a side problem with the touchpad. It seems that the touchpad has some conflict with the fingerprint software. Once I install the fingerprint software and get the pre-boot login to work the touchpad freezes up. The only work around is to uninstall the Dell touchpad software. The touchpad still works as a mouse but not with all the fancy options. Now the windows logon and pre-boot logon work but the tpm module is still unavailable even though the bios is set to activated and the tpm v1.2 device driver is installed and working and the tpm.msc snapin says the tpm is on and ownership has been taken. The Data Protection Access app reports the that TPM is unavailable. Also the NTRU service refuses to start. It keeps complaining about either a different service not available or marked for deletion.
On the Dell E6230 support page there under Dell Data Protection there are two application packages but no firmware updates. How do I get the right firmware update for the application on the support page.
Concerning the Alienware 15 R2 ... has anyone found any specs and/or technical data that confirm or deny that the two M.2 slots support PCie x4 on slot 1, and PCie x2 on slot 2? Can anyone confirm if they are only SATA III speed, or will we get PCIe x4 Gen 3.0 speed The only information given in the service manual related to this is the following:
Does this mean that the M.2 slots are limited to 6Gbps? Has it been determined whether the Alienware 15 R2 can do PCI-Express on the M.2 slot or is it limited to SATA III?

I just bought a 7559 from the outletstore. IT has a 107GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I am running in to the problem of as I install my programs to the computer (Photoshop, lightroom, MS office, etc.) All of the program files are being loaded onto the SDD drive and quickly filling it up. Doing this does not create a happy world. In response I have taken the following actions.
1. Went to the settings>storage window and set the apps to be loaded onto the HDD (D) drive.
2. Done the same thing for the Music files
3. I tried doing this for the Documents and Pictures, setting the files to be placed onto the HDD (D) drive. It doesn't work. IT keeps reverting to the One Drive.
4. Removed as many recently in stalled programs as possible.
Results:
1.Newly installed Apps keep getting placed onto the SDD (C) drive. (Firefox, Foxit, etc.)
2. My documents can only be loaded onto the SDD drive. Not okay I have way too many files for this option.
3. I am okay with not using the OneDrive if needed.
4. I tried the help desk and the guys said to put everything on the OS drive, the (C) SDD. I took this as a way of just getting rid of me.
HELP!! I have projects due and I need to get to work. I need y computer.
I have a Dell Inspiron with the dell 1705 b/g/n 2.4GHZ wifi hardware and Windows 10. For the last few days, it will no longer connect to my home wifi network. it gives me the 'can't connect to this network' message.
It will still connect fine to my neighbor's, work, cell phone hotspot, and public location wifi networks. And of course the other 5-6 laptops/devices in my household connected to my home wifi network still connect and work fine. It works fine when I connect to my home network by Ethernet cable directly to my cable modem/wifi router. I borrowed a medialink USB wifi dongle for the laptop and I can connect through it just fine to my home wifi network. As silly as it sounds, it literally seems to be that the only thing that no longer works it connecting from the internal wifi hardware to my home network--any other hardware or any other network still works just fine. I can't figure out how that is even feasible..
Given it is my home wifi, I can confirm that nothing has changed on my home network (no new hardware, or change in passwords or network names). And, no hardware changes to my laptop. No intentional software changes that I am aware of for my laptop from just before when it was working fine to the last few days where it will no longer connect.
My home network is cable modem/wifi router, arris touchstone DG1660 that broadcasts both a 2.4 and 5 GHZ and supports 802.11 a/b/g/n.
I've tried forgetting/deleting my wifi network and then connecting anew, I've tried a system restore on my laptop to a time before any of this started happening, I've tried the diagnosis features in the network and sharing center and resetting the network adapter, rebooting, and installing an updated 1705 wifi driver from dell's site--all to no avail.
Got any ideas?

It says I have 62.8gb free of 941gb... I have no Video, about 50 pictures, Office is the only software I have installed. When I click on disk (C) it says that "Temp_SafeToDeleteRefreshFile_Attempt0__File0" is taking up 857,923,584 kb... I don't know if I should delete it.

from the last one month i am facing problem with my battery. my laptop is running after i shut down also. while i use laptop with the battery i am not getting any problem, if i connect adapter and use the laptop after i shut down the laptop also the fan is running and the battery drains off, again if i want to turn on my laptop i have to remove the battery and again i have to replace it other wise the laptop is not turning on
i am using windows 10 pro
please give some solution for this problem

i bought a dell laptop from UAE (united Arab Emirates) and the salesman told me that this product is in under international warranty currently i am in Pakistan and i am facing battery problem i called to one of dell service center he told me that they are not accepting the UAE region warranty so please suggest me what should i do now it is hard for me to fixed it from UAE is it possible to transfer the ownership to Pakistan because this product is the name of my friend ....

Hello everyone,
I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 i7 with Dell Weless 1080A network card.
When I use any bluetooth mouse (I tried with two different mice) with wifi on I experience saltuary lag of the cursor.
When the wifi is off everything works great.
I tryed disabling the "Bluetooth Collaboration" feature of the network card but didn't help.
The driver is the 1.566.0.0.
Someone have the same issue? How can I solve?
