Cannot install Win 7 on Precision 7710

I am trying to do a clean install of Win 7 Pro on my Precision 7710 and every time I boot off of the DVD and click Install it goes a screen saying there are no drivers found for the device. I have tried switching to UMEI mode, RAID mode, Legacy on and off... no luck. What drivers am I missing exactly?

Inspiron 17R N7010 new SSD installed, now I need Windows 7 OS installation disc.

Hi guys,

So my stock HDD on my Inspiron 17R N7010 completely *** out on me last week, so I bit the bullet and just bought I completely new SDD and installed it last night...now however, I need to install the OS again. Problem is, when I bought the laptop, Windows 7 came pre-installed, so I have no disc for it. How can I go about getting an installation disc and how much is it gonna cost so I can get my laptop up and running again? It's an outdated OS and the laptop is almost 6 years old, I can't imagine it costing that much. There's a Microsoft store right by me too, can I just go there and buy the Windows 7 OS disc you think?

Also, the original HDD was 640GB and this new SSD is 500GB, so the recovery disks I made when I first got the laptop are useless since Dell Datasafe Recovery (or whatever it's called) keeps telling me the harddrive needs at least 590GB of space (or something similar along that message). The smaller space on the SSD isn't going to be an issue with the laptop in general or when installing the Windows 7 OS is it?

Disabling optical boot devices in the UEFI

Greetings.

Can anyone tell me how to disable optical drive (CD \ DVD) boot in the UEFI?

I'm working on setting up security on the workstations for my company, and would like to restrict boot options to just the hard disk \ windows installation. I have seen the settings to disable USB and PXE boot, but cannot find a way to disable optical drive boot without completely disabling the "Module Bay."

I assume there is a trick to this, other forum posts asking the same question have gone unanswered.

Latitude E7440 - Wireless Adapter preventing sleep, causing BSOD (9F)

Good day,

I've run into an issue with one of our E7440 units. Whenever I try to enter sleep mode, it fails to fully enter sleep. Just hangs there with a black screen, and the power light is still on (not dimming like it should when it's in sleep mode).

I've narrowed it down to the wireless adapter. I can disable the wireless radio with the switch on the side (also disabling through device manager), and it will enter sleep properly. If I have the wireless adapter enabled, it bluescreens with a 9F code.

I've tried reinstalling the driver, installing an updated driver, and upgrading the BIOS (was on A07, now on A17). I've also tried changing some of the power management settings but nothing appears to resolve this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? And have you found a working solution?

Any advice helps.

Thanks in advance,

Dell XPS 13 - USB-C to Video Out - HDMI and VGA failing with Dell dongle

I have one of the new Dell XPS13s with the USB-C port rather than any real video connectors, and waited patiently for a genuine dell dongle. (I have the one which has 4 outputs - Ethernet, USB, HDMI and VGA out DA200?)

Giving a presentation the other day, I suddenly found that I couldn't output to a screen. I returned home and have since found I can't output to my home screen either. The dongle appears to be working, at least the USB portion of it works fine, but when I attempt to hook up an external display I get the following message:

Try improving the USB connection
DisplayPort connection might not work. Try using a different cable.

I can now no longer output via VGA or HDMI. I've tried numerous restarts, checked for driver updates, firmware, etc.

Anybody come across similar problems? Any obvious fixes I have missed?

Reliably being able to connect to external monitors is more or less mission critical for me.

Dell Inspiron 11 3147 in "tablet mode" + external USB keyboard

I'm going to buy Dell Inspiron 11 3147 and use it sometimes in "tablet mode" with external USB keyboard.

I know that this mode turns off original hardware keyboard and touchpad. But will external USB keyboard work? Seems it should but is there a proof?

Thanks in advance for answers.

7710 m.2 slot ssd compatibility

I've searched far and wide on the internet and can't find a definitive answer anywhere...which busses do the m.2 slots on the precision 7710 support?

PCIe (NVMe) is obviously supported but would it be possible to use a sata3 based m.2 drive in those slots too?

I've already purchased a 256gb 950 pro for a boot drive but would like to have a 1tb drive in the other m.2 slot for data storage (VM's and such) without having to mortgage my house for a NVMe drive.

Is this possible?

I already have a 512gb ssd in the sata slot and would like to keep it there.

Thanks.

Hardware Problem: Alienware 15 Always Restart After Shutting Down or Sleeping

My 2-month-old Alienware 15 bought online from dell.ca always restarts after shutting down or Sleeping. Some similar problems found online but my case is more serious. It restarts even when I unplug the power and use battery only. I thought it's a software issue so that I have already followed the instructions online by updating &restoring BIOS, restoring power management sets, disabling fast boot, disabling automatically restart after failure,  disabling Wake-on-Lan, checking the powercfg-lastwake, reinstalling win10 operating system, removing static electricity. All those possible solution didn't work. I ran the DELL diagnose test but all hardware components passed. I didn't really believe the that test so that I installed a Linux system, in which the issue persisted. This problem occurred one day when it couldn't boot up after using up the battery, even though the power adapter was connected and had already charged the laptop for 2 hours. It finally turned up surprisingly one day later but the new issue came out that it couldn't normally shut down.  Are there any other possible solutions? Must the motherboard be replaced? Help!

Dell XPS 15 9550 - regular bluescreens

Hi there,

I'm on my second XPS15 9550, i7, 512gb ssd, 4k touch screen, 16gb RAM, win 10.

Have done all the firmware and system updates - currently on 1.20 BIOS, NVIDIA latest as well.

This machine still bluescreens at least once or twice a day, and it's getting beyond liveable - I just don't expect this from a new PC any more, let alone a flagship machine.

I'm at the sad point of sending this unit back, getting a refund and buying a Mac. This should be a fantastic machine - it's getting it's image trashed with such poor reliability.

Need some help please.

Thanks

Dell Latitude E6540 USB Issues, inconstancies, problems

Hello All,

This is absolute madness. I have a Latitude E6540.x64. 8G Ram. Win10, (updated, patched). All Dell drivers up to date, (as far as I can tell...)

I am going NUTS trying to figure out why my USB ports are acting flaky. Sometimes, I plug in my iPhone and it shows up. Sometimes it doesn't. No matter what I try, it won't show as a device. BUT, in settings, it shows the Apple Device Support Driver. I remove it, reinstall it. Nothing. Then, the next day I plug it in and, Viola,it shows up.

I am a retired Senior Systems & Network Engineer. I have worked with MS OS for 30+ years. I sort of know what I am doing. But this...this makes no sense.

Other problems I have are with USB 3.0 Ext Drives connecting, then dropping out with no explanation or reason. Sometimes, it is the port on the left side in the back. Sometimes, it is the one in the back on the right. I also have a docking station.port replicator. That 3.0 port does the same. I am at my wits end. I have 2 Seagate Ext USB, (SCSI) drives, BOTH support USB 3.0 and work Fine on my Dell Optiplex DT. My iPhone works fine. ALL of my USB devices test ok at 3.0 on another platform, but on this $#*@ Latitude, they are just not doing what I would expect. Grrr.

I got nothing. Anyone?

Thanks,

Doug

Can't reinstall Windows 10 on SSD

$

Hi everyone, I need some help with my new Alienware 15 R2 laptop. For reasons I don't care to mention, I needed to do a clean install of the OS. The way my pc was setup was with the OS on the SSD and the SATA drive being simply a data drive for my User files (Documents, Music, etc).

Beforehand I made the Windows Recovery Image on a USB key (got the link/file from the Dell drivers page for my pc). Then I booted from the USB key and went through the Reset my PC prompts, choosing the setting that removed all personal files, apps and settings. The computer ran through the process but somewhere along the line something went wrong (not sure since I left it running overnight) and it said windows could not complete the reset due to an error. So I attempted to run through the same steps again and this time it worked. However, after the install I realized that the OS had been installed on the SATA drive, and the SSD was not even visible by Windows file explorer, device manager, etc. I had to install the Intel Rapid Storage driver manually before Windows recognized the SSD drive.

After searching the interwebs I couldn't find out how to easily "switch" the OS from the SATA to the SSD. So I plugged the Windows Recovery Image USB key back in and attempted to reset again, hoping things would fix themselves or I would be given the option to select the HDD to install the OS to. Well, neither of those happened; The OS installed again to the SATA drive.

My last idea was to unplug the SATA drive, then try the Windows Recovery Image. Unfortunately I got errors with the Reset my PC options. If I selected the Keep My Personal Files option the error mentioned something about having a locked partition/drive. If I selected the Remove All Files option the error says something about missing a required partition/drive.

For those that were able to read this whole rant, any ideas/help? I want to get my Alienware laptop back to day one status with the OS on the SSD and the SATA as the extra data drive. If anyone could please help out I would very much appreciate it.

Latitude E6230 battery indicator alternate blinking amber and white

Recently my Latitude E6230 battery indicator started blinking....

amber - off - white - off - amber - off - white - off ...

This happens when I'm running off the battery (extended battery, not sure exactly what it is) or when I'm plugged in. Sometimes it won't start until some time after a full charge, but the indicator seems to say I have about 6-plus hours of life left at 80% and doesn't seem to be discharging quickly. It's holding a charge well, but the battery indicator persists in blinking.

Any suggestions?

Inspiron 7559 soft-touch coating - will it "melt?"

$

I've bought my first dell laptop a few months ago. It's a black Inspiron 7559. So far I'm very satisfied with its performance. However, recently someone told me that the layer of soft-touch paint all over the back lid and the keyboard surface will react with water in the air and become gooey in a year or two.

I went Googling and noticed that Dell seems to LOVE soft-touch finish and put it on a lot of their models, even on Latitude and older XPS models. So I wanna ask long-time Dell users or Dell staff -

Did your Dell laptop become sticky and gooey? If so, how long did the coating last?

Will the coating on my Inpsiron 7559 become sticky and gooey? If so, how long should I expect the coating to last?

So I updated my laptop to Windows 10 a while back - absolutely no problems - but I just did a restart and cleaned off the files and stuff.  Now I can't turn on wi-fi, and it says there's no available connections.  I tried downloading and installing the driver from the website, but that did nothing.  Everything worked fine before - do I need to install other drivers?

XPS 13, restore hanging

$

Hi all together, my XPS 13 (4 month old) showed since 1 month some problems on start up. More an more often the automatic repair appears and no it stopped completely. I tried a restore and it started but after about 30 stopped since 20 hours. I checked with my desktop computer the Dell page and find some curious things. First of all Dell page  wants to run a diagnosis. But how, if the computer hangs. The Dell asks for a service tag which should be on the bottom of the laptop. But there is no on my XPS 13. Just a sticker "intel inside Core i7" . Then I got the wise recommendation to open on my Dell  computer the autodetect of the service tag... But how if it does not starts. Anyone has some idea about that? Thanks in advance. Albert
