DELL Inspiron 5547 - faulty touchpad and other things

Hi,

I have few DELL laptops and never had any issues with them.

That's why I bought a new one - Inspiron 5547. Everything would be perfect except the series of issues:

- First the laptop shut down itself randomly, or when changing the screen angle. The technican replaced the whole motherboard and some stuff.

- Then the laptop worked OK except a lot of bluescreens caused by plugging in headphones, a HDMI cable or other accessories. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't. The technican replaced the whole motherboard again.

- Then the touchpad started causing issues or I didn't notice them before, because the laptop history is 90% service and repair, 10% - my usage...

The touchpad sometimes gets laggy and the cursor "jumps" on the screen, and also make fake clicks randomly when I'm not even touching anything (even the laptop itself).

Sometimes it happens when the laptop is plugged in to the charger, but there is no rule, it can surprise me.

When it works OK, the gestures aren't. For example I can't see any movemenent on the touchpad icon and can't scroll with two fingers, BUT the touchpad is enabled, as the gestures. The only thing that helps with getting gestures back is restart.

Didn't have these problems on 3737 and 5737.

Of course this time the technican visited me as well. He confirmed something is not right, then he replaced the touchpad with the whole upper "case" around the keyboard. He reset the system and installed Windows and other things from the scratch. He also updated the touchpad drivers. Then he left after checking that it worked... for 30 seconds. The second minute he left the problem was back.

Now I have a new 5547 and can't use it, because of the faulty touchpad. It works ok with the mouse, but I didn't spend my money to have a broken product without a normal touchpad.

I tried to return it to the store, wait 2 weeks to hear that everything is OK. They returned it to me.

I asked the technican what can I do? I don't want this laptop anymore, it doesn't work, it was repaired many times, and I want to get the whole laptop replaced to another model. He said they can't do it, only the seller can.

I'm offended as I'm a loyal DELL customer, I have 3 laptops including this 5547, I even have the DELL Axim x51v palmtop from old times, I recommend DELL to my friends, but I can't get my product replaced? Or even repaired?

Have someone experienced similar problems with this touchpad? Maybe it's easy to fix? Right now the laptop is useless and one thing I know for sure is if it won't be solved, I won't buy and recommend another Dell ever again.

Dell Studio 1735 Windows 7?

Since Chrome and a lot of other programs decided to stop supporting Vista, I decided to order a Windows 7 key and install it on my Laptop.

Unfortunately, their have been some complications. Nothing was installed, absolutely nothing. Obviously probably because Dell doesn't have drivers for the 1735. When I go to my program and features nothing is installed.

My internet seems to really slow and sluggish. Probably something to do with Wifi. (Drivers Perhaps?) Yet I can't install anything, because it's so slow. The only thing I downloaded was Chrome, now is it my wifi or is it because Internet explorer is bad.

What do I do, is there anything I Can install? Do I need to reinstall Vista? I want to get my Laptop up to tip top shape.

Dell Inspiron 1564 8GB, Memory fails to upgrade

I have a Dell Inspiron 1564 and I am trying to upgrade the memory to 8GB.  I bought two KTD-L3CL/4G.  It seems to meet all the specs, but when I try to install it I get a message from windows that it can't restart and needs to be repaired.  If I put the old memory back in, it works.  is there something special I have to do to upgrade this memory?  I thought you just shut down windows, pull the battery, unplug, the replace and start back up.....

If I look in Setup at the start, it shows 8GB memory.  The Kingston page says KTD-L3C/4G, no reference to the CL, just the C.  Is there a big difference?  I am using Windows 7 Home version.

I have a Dell Studio 1735 running Windows 10 build 10586.164.

The driver for the fingerprint reader is present under "Biometric devices":

(installed from AES2810_WBF_Setup_A01_32bit_ZPE.exe)

But there is no "fingerprint sign-in" option in the Settings app.

How do I get it to appear?

Where can I find the latest driver for the fingerprint reader?

XPS 13 wrong clock time and fails to reboot

Two years ago I've bought this XPS and I was doing fine, until lately.

1. The BIOS clock time is wrong.

2. Moreover, when the system (linux 14.04) restarts (or I turn it on again immediately after a shutdown), the leds turn on for 2 seconds, then the pc shuts down.
At that point, it takes various (up to 10, 15) attempts to work it again.

Could the two issues be related?

Shall I have to change the CMOS battery?

Any suggestion about battery type, do's and don'ts?

Thanks a lot.

Dell Latitude Power Supply/Charger - Smoke and Sparks

The Power supply for my Dell Latitude started to smoke and then sparks started flying from it.  Thankfully I managed to unplug it before either my laptop was damaged or a serious fire started,

What is Dell's process for dealing with such incidents?

Picture of Power Supply is included, and it is about 3 years old.

Note: Not sure if my previous Post was actually logged as the Community web page froze,

Vostro 3550 Windows 10 Upgrade - Black Screen

Getting a black screen on your Vostro 3550 laptop after attempting the Windows 10 upgrade?

Seems there is a BIOS incompatibility.  You'll need to connect an external monitor via HDMI - that will allow you to see the Windows 10 initial setup screens and get through them.

After you get Windows 10 running - you'll need to update the BIOS to Version A12:  LINK HERE

As of right now - still having some trouble with the explorer.exe process restarting randomly.  That seems to be the only residual issue.

Hope this helps someone!

Bob.

Hi,

When I purchased an XPS 13 (2015) the advert stated NBD, I just checked my warranty status on the dell site and it says Collect and Return.

Are they the same?

I am looking at extending the warranty but unsure as what type of extensions exist.

Thanks

Inspiron 17 R SE Raid settup

$

I have an Inspiron 17 R SE laptop whic was originally supplied with Windows 7and which has a 32Gb Msata ssd set up in a Raid configuration with the 750Gb hard drive to provide accellerated access to the most frequently used files.

The laptop was recently updated to Windows 10 (which actually started without warning!) and all seemed well for a few weeks. However, a problem recently appeared with the start button - which caused a critical error forcing the closure of the login session each time the start button was used. I tried what seems to be the recommended fix - i.e. setting up a new account and copying data across, but this failed as the new accounts could not access the profile system - so would not work.

In desperation I tried to do a factory reset - which I had assumed would clear the C drive and retore Windows 7 but the upgrade to Windows 10 seems to have disabled this approach - as F8 no longer provides access to the hidden restore partition.

Restoring Windows 10 deleted all my software, but it HAS fixed the laptop and it appears to be working - but with the exception that the Raid configuration seems to be 'confused'. I did a little 'Googling' and installed the Intel Rapid Storage Driver for Windows 10. The laptop seems to be working - but the Raid setup clearly has a problem. Using the Windows System Configuration utility, Windows appears to 'think' the 750Gb drive is an SSD! I have checked the owners manual, and there is no information whatsoever to indicate how the Raid accelleration is set up - and most importantly how to reset it or configure iyt correctly.

Unfortunately the Intel website does not seem to have any documentation and I cannot email Dell tech support as they are not supporting the laptop now. Can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation for the Raid accelleration used in the laptop so that I can get it correctly configured? One of the side effects of Windows 10 'seeing' the C drive as an SSD is that it will not allow defragmentation!

Any adviice gratefully received.

New AW15r2 laptop. I've downloaded the currently available updates to my hard drive, but then running the downloaded exe files gives a window labeled "Installshield Wizard" listing "Command Line Parameters:" and a list of parameters and an "OK" button. Clicking the ok button then gives a window that "The update installer operation was unsuccessful". Suggestions?

Warranty rejected for a false reason

Hi everyone,

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop from Ebay India on 23 October 2015. Ebay gave me a Laptop from Thailand. My laptop's display stopped working on 4th of Dec 2015. I contacted Dell Technical Support and they told me that I had to transfer my warranty from Thailand to India on 9th of Dec 2015 and I filled the form as they said. Then I got no response from Dell and on 18 Dec, I contacted them back then they told me for some reason the warranty is not transferred so I filled the form again on 18 dec as they told. Then again I called them on 5 Jan and they told me that it was still not tranferred and I have to wait. Then they didn't reply and I contacted them on 14 Jan and finally my warranty got transferred on that day after 1 Month. And I don't know how but in this one month my laptop's display started to work but a new problem arose that it started automatically shutting down. So Dell Technical Support created a service for me and I got my motherboard replaced on 20th of Jan. After that my laptop was still shutting down so I contacted them back on 26th Jan and on 4th of Feb my second time motherboard was replaced. But unfortunately around 26th of Feb, my laptop again started to shut down so I contacted them on 26 Feb and they made me to reinstall my OS.But still my computer was shutting down so Dell sent an Engineer on 2 March to confirm whether my laptop is actually shutting down or not. The Engineer also found out that my laptop was shutting down so he told his higher authority and once again they didn't took this matter seriously and did the same procedure of replacing motherboard on 9th of March. But once again my issue was same and the computer was still shutting down, so I contacted Dell on 11th of March and demanded some different action but they totally refused everything and told me that I bought laptop which is from Thailand so they will never replace the laptop and once again were going to replace the motherboard but I was so much saddened by the services of Dell at that time that I instead requested their manager to do something different( my mistake as I will explain later) then he told me to go to service center where they will diagnose the laptop totally using some device called multimeter which is in another city far from my location by 347km. So as I was told I went to service center on 14th of March and submitted my laptop. Now here is a proof that there is no coordination between Dell Technical Support and Dell Service Center. On 15 March I got a message from Dell that my laptop is repaired on 15th Mar. I was in doubt whether they have done complete testing or not. So I went to service center on 21 Mar and they handed me my laptop in on state and turned that off and then I put my laptop in my bag and also I asked them what they did and they told me they replaced the motherboard and ran all the testing( the Fn+Power button diagnostic). I was not satisfied but quite happy that my laptop was on.Then I went to my home on that night and directly turned on my laptop and found out that my laptop's charging light was orange so I put that on charging and then there was nothing happening but yes it overheating( not at all my fault) as I was unaware it was overheating due to no sign of it being on. But as soon as my father found maybe after 5 minutes out that it was hot so I removed the battery to make sure that full laptop was off. After that nothing happened not even the light turned on when I plugged the charger. On the same night around 12am I called Technical support and they told me that their tools are down. So I was told to talk next day.On next day they told me that they are again creating a service for me but I didn't have that much time as I had a project to show. So I insisted them to give me some priority but they told me it was not possible and she connected me to her manager. Now the very same manager who sent me to service center attached service center too on the conference call and asked what they serviced on my laptop. Then service center told them they just replaced my motherboard without even touching a device called multimeter, the reason may be because the manager didn't care to inform the service center about my case or the service center was too ignorant. However on that conference call manager scolded the service center employee for such ignorant thing. Then manager told me to install a genuine Microsoft windows but I refused totally because my laptop came with linux Ubuntu and I knew that my computer not starting has nothing to do with the OS and the manager was just bending the issue to the OS as he knew I will be hesitant to buy such a costly OS. After my refusal he told me to go back to service center , noticing that I was cornered and no way to go I agreed to go back to service center. After that I contacted the service center later on that day to know whther they were open on the next day and the guy there told me that "Yes definitely!" . So I travelled 347km to service center on 23 March and was shocked to see the service center was closed because of a festival called Holi. I called the technical support from outside of the service center and she connected me to her manager and co incidently it was the very same manager who sent me to service center every time. I was so frustrated to travel so long and found that shop was closed that I told him it is not possible from my side to come to the service center daily, but this time he was so clear and told me directly( I am not sure whether he has this much authority) that he will not give me onsite warranty and I have to visit the service center again. So sadly and helplessly I went to service center on 26 Mar and submitted my laptop and they gave me receipt that says as no damages found only some scratches at top cover. They told me that it will be repaired by 31 March. Service center guy also told me that he was scolded because of me as he misinformed me about 23 March and he refused totally that he misinformed me. Then after that they never contacted me, never updated me, nothing. So I called them on 31 March and one guy at service center told me that they have mailed Dell for some part and till they didn't reply there is nothing that they can do. So I contacted technical support and they told me that they will look into the issue and arrange a callback later. But at 4:11pm I received a call from a mobile number from service center that told me that my warranty is rejected and I can collect my system from service center. I was shocked as what happened all of a sudden so I called Technical Support and they told me that warranty is there and I should tell service center to repair my laptop. Then I called Service center and then he told me that they sent picture of my laptop to some authority of Dell and they said that I got it repaired from outside, which is what I totally refused. Then I contacted Technical Support and they contacted service center and then they told me that some liquid spilled on my laptop. The reason is changed all of a sudden for my warranty rejection, quite fascinating. So, I again refused because I checked the laptop just I got home and it was not working. So I also talked to some manager and he repeated the very same wordings and told me directly that he can't do anything. I asked him why I am being doubted instead of their service center then he told me that "We don't generally doubt our service center". He told me that I will have to pay now to get my computer repaired. Now I am very well aware that there is not my fault as I have not done anything. I was even forced to go to service center instead of onsite warranty on 22 March. If it would have been onsite then everything would have been so clear as I would be present with my laptop every time

I am requesting you people to look into this matter as I bought this laptop 5 months ago and it is not working from 4 months and now I am being doubted even though I have a receipt from service center which says No Damages Found. And believe me I have not spilled any liquid and blaming on service center is also impossible as I never wanted to visit service center , So how could Technical Support even doubt me.

Regards

Ankit Gautam
