Windows 8.1 clean install freeze

I have an inspiron 7559. I installed an m.2 850 samsung evo to use for my OS. Whenever I try to install an OS, whether it's windows 10 or windows 8.1, it would freeze on the windows logo screen and the dots going in circles indefinitely. I've had it go on for about 12 hours before with no progress so I'm assuming going longer wouldn't be productive.

Inspiron 15z 5523 won't boot consistently

My Inspiron 5523 laptop will not boot normally after I tried to dual boot Linux.

Symptoms:

Computer will not cold boot (or boot after hibernation). I mean that the screen is completely black, the Dell splash screen does not show up, and none of the keys (F2, F8, F12, Fn) will go to their appropriate screens. The lights turn on then go off, and I can hear the fan and processor working for 5 seconds then stop. There is no POST beep.

Occasionally after I do some combination of unplug CMOS battery, unplug battery and holding power button, unplug a ram, and hitting the reset button on the bottom of my computer, the computer boots normally and everything works completely fine. Restarting is fine, only cold boot won't work.

What I've tried:

  • I ran the preboot diagnostic (from the Fn key) when I could, and the report showed no problem at all with my hardware.
  • I tried to factory reset my computer (which deleted all of my data and reverted from Windows 10 to 8)
  • I have Intel Rapid Start Tech turned off
  • I deleted the Ubuntu that I installed and the Grub boot loader
  • I tried to fix the UEFI bootloader by using bootrec and bootfix
  • I tried to restore UEFI bootloader to default settings (didn't seem to change anything)
  • I tried to install all the drivers recommended to my computer by Dell
  • I tried to reflash my BIOS (not sure if this has to do with UEFI) using the latest driver, but it won't let me flash and says I have the latest

Observations:

  • Factory resetting the computer didn't seem to factory reset the UEFI. I still see Ubuntu as an option in the UEFI boot order for some reason (although it's 3rd, behind the Windows boot manager). I was wondering if there's a way to reflash my UEFI
  • Sometimes after power on and power off too many times, I would get 3 POST beeps indicating chipset issue. But I don't think this is a real issue as it goes away after removing the battery. Also my computer passed the preboot diagnostic and works completely fine when booted.

I'm completely out of ideas at this point, and my suspicion is UEFI needs a reflash, any ideas? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks so much!

Inspiron 15z 5523 Ultrabook - How to Ground the System Before RAM Installation

$

I'm planning on upgrading my RAM on my computer, and according to the owner's manual in the
"Before you start" section, it talks about how to ground your system. It says that after your computer is shut down, unplugged from the outlet, and all attached devices are removed, to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to ground the system board.  However, when I press and hold the power button, the computer just boots up normally.  I've tried several times and I'm unsure of what the solution is.

Here are all 5 steps in the "Before you boot" section:

1. Save and close all open files and exit all programs.

2. Follow the instructions to shut down your computer based on the operating system installed on your computer (Windows 10 for me)

3. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Disconnect all telephone cables, network cables, and attached devices from your computer.

5. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, after the computer is unplugged, to ground the system board.

Inspiron 7000 Not Powering On

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 7000, 15.6" i7 8gb ram that isn't powering up. I press the power button, the button lights up and keyboard backlight lights, then the power button fades out and continues this light up fade out process on it's own indefinitely. The screen does not turn on, the fan does not turn on, and there is no beeping.

I've tried:

  • Pulling battery and AC cable and holding the power button for 5, 10, 15 and 30 seconds, then reinstalling battery and AC cable. I've also tried this with just the battery, and just the AC cable. No changes.
  • I've removed hard drive and started with no change
  • Removed small coin battery (CMOS?) and reinstalled after 30 seconds.
  • Removed, cleaned and reinstalled RAM stick. No change.
  • Removed everything from USB and HDMI accessories and attempted to start with an accessory in the individual ports.

Now, when I power it on with the RAM stick removed, the fan turns on, the screen backlight comes on(but doesn't display anything) and I hear beeping. Also, I installed a 2gb stick from a friends laptop and get the same symptoms as with no RAM installed.

Anyone have any other ideas they could throw at me?

Thanks!

I bought a XPS 13 9350 and the thunder bolt docking station.

I installed Ubuntu (15).  I have not been able to get the docking station to work on Ubuntu.  Is it not possible?  The light on the front of the laptop lights up when I plug it in, so I assume it's plugging in correctly.  Though, the light on the thunderbolt cord itself does not light up (it was went I tired it on Windows).

Precision M6500 Ownership Tag Change

I received an M6500 second hand and it still has an ownership tag from the previous owner. The ownership tag is the text above the Dell logo during POST. It cannot be changed with Dell CCTK. It also cannot be changed from the BIOS. The PlatformTags_4.006_ZPE.exe software does not support the M6500. Does anyone have a version that does? Is there another way to do so?

power supply plug - figure 8 (C5) vs mickey mouse (C8)

I have a Dell Precision M4800 laptop which uses the massive 195W power supply that has the 3 hole (mickey mouse - C8) style plug.  I'm traveling internationally and have a laptop power cord kit that has multiple A/C plug heads but it's back end is the 2 hole (figure-8 - C5) style.  can i use that if i get a C8 to C5 adapter?

the third hole in the C8 is just for the ground wire.  is it that critical for the power supply to be grounded?

and just to confirm, all Dell power supplies (at least the 195W one) can handle both 110v and 220v, right?  i don't need a transformer, just the right size A/C plug

Thanks

TB15 on Alienware 17

I recently purchased a TB15 under the direction of dell sales that it would work with the new alienware 17 laptop. After several call and scouring the internet for some kind of information on trying to get these to work it has yielded nothing. the only thing that I cannot seem to get right is the firmware for the dock to install. The dock does show up in the device manager as an Intel 3.1 usb hub.

DELL INSPIRON 15-5547 BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER

I bought this laptop (Inspiron 15 5547 model) exactly on 2014 December. For the last few months I was hearing a click sound whenever I open the laptop. And today also I heard the click sound but while
closing the laptop I found the right corner edge is popped open. Because delicate screws and delicate panel.

I contacted Dell Support for this issue and explained them what happened. They told me that this is a damage happened on the laptop and I was not covered by accidental damage coverage. So I have to pay for this one to be fixed.

I explained them that I’m using this laptop as everyone else does like opening a laptop to work on it and closing it when am done with my work. But no use, I was told this is beyond warranty I have to pay $160 and wait at least 12 working days to get it fixed.

I don’t understand, opening and closing is one of the basic functionalities of any laptop. Doing so has broken a screw which is beyond my control and that led to weird opening at the bottom. Because delicate screws and delicate panel

Can someone please suggest me what are my options?

HOw to get UK support?

I click on 'contact us' in the support page for my XPS15 and I have three choices - email, phone and chat.

Each link goes to a German lanuage page.

How can I get an English language page?  I don't know any German!

Or is there another way to contact Dell UK Tech Support?

Thanks!

How do I purchase an Inspiron 17 with an AZERTY keyboard?

$

I've tried the obvious things: on the UK web site it's not an option, the chat person says that they don't do them, the .fr site offers it but fails at checkout ( my French is poor, could have done something wrong). I just want an otherwise 'normal i.e. English, laptop but with an AZERTY keyboard.

I'm aware that I can modify the keyboard through the Control Panel and have ordered some stickers to experiment with, but the above would be my preferred option.

Is there a number, a person, in Dell who would facilitate this?

Advice needed configuring a new Precision 17 7000 laptop

Hi,

I'm trying to configure a new Precision 17 7000 laptop using the wizard on the (dutch) Dell website. Some of the options that I can choose from are not clear to me and the 'help' button in the wizard doesn't really help (and neither did google..). Hopefully someone here can enlighten me on the differences between the options presented and the meaning of some abbreviations.

The wizard asks me to choose from three options in the secion 'base options'. The options are (translated from dutch):

i7-6820HQ, no smartcard reader, without type C, foot, Mobile Precision 7710
i7-6820HQ, only smartcardreader, foot, Mobile Precision 7710
i7-6820HQ, only smartcardreader, with type C, foot, Mobile Precision 7710

I tried to contact Dell and ended up talking to a 'Dell partner'. The guy I talked to suggested this had something to do with a docking station. If it does, then what has a 'smartcard reader' and a 'type C' (which is a type of USB connector, right?) has to do with it? And what does 'foot' refer to?

Continuing with the wizard I have to pick a harddisk. I'd like to have a SSD as my primary disk and I see the following options:

512 GB M.2 PCIe Solid State-harddisk, MPWS
512 GB M.2 PCIe powerfull Solid State-harddisk

What does 'MPWS' mean?
Does anyone have an idea about the real difference between a SSD and  a 'powerfull SSD' ?

Finally, when choosing a second harddrive, I'd like to pick one of the following two:

Extra 1 TB 2,5 inch SATA-harddisk(7.200 rpm)
Extra 2 TB SATA HDD (5.400 rpm),MPWS

They're about the same price, and I'm leaning towards the larger 5400 rpm drive. But how is the performance difference between those two? Can I find a comparison, or at least some info on f.e. IOPS of these disks somewhere?

Thanks,
