I have a Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 (17.3") 900p:
i7-3630qm (2.4ghz, Turbo Burst 3.4Ghz)
256gb ssd (Win8.1, Lightroom catalog and previews)
1tb hd (photos and data files)
8gb ram
Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 2gb
I want to buy a larger external IPS monitor to use with it. It has both Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 2gb and Intel HD 4000 for graphics. The computer has an HDMI port and an old-style VGA port. I don't know much about this stuff, but I suppose these days external monitors use HDMI.
My main question is about monitor resolution. Right now I am looking at the Intel HD 4000 properties app and it currently shows a maximum resolution of 1600x900. Maybe that is because all I have now is the built-in monitor. If I attach an external monitor with a higher resolution will it show additional higher resolution choices?
The separate Nvidia properties app seems to have no resolution adjustment so I don't know how to use the Nividia adapter with an external monitor. Will something suddenly appear in the properties if I connect an external monitor?
I am in Japan and looking at the Bic Camera website they have a ton of monitors. I have found several that aren't so expensive, but have an IPS display. For example, just one that I saw is the Dell P2414H which is 23.8" and 1920x1080. I was mostly looking at this particular one because the resolution matches what I saw in the Intel HD 4000 properties app. If I can actually use a higher resolution then I could consider some other monitors too.
Sorry, I realize these are rather simple, newbie type questions, but it is confusing because I have never tried to attach an external monitor. Here in Japan you can't so easily return stuff if I <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU>up and buy the wrong thing. I need to get it right. Thank you!
