Dell Laptop XPS 17 L701X

I have some troubles with my Dell Laptop: XPS 17 L701X

The laptop since a while would not work anymore.

Symptoms:

Laptop Starts (I hear the ventilator, led light above keyboards works). screen stays black and nothing will happen, after a while the laptop turns itself off.

one in many times the screen does work and I got yesterday in windows like nothing is wrong (I tried dell diagnostics but the test frozen two times). Today I try to make another diagnostic but windows wouldn't start normally, it indicates that windows couldn't start correctly and you have to reboot (after reboot the screen gets black onces again).

What I tried so far:

Harddisk works fine if I connect it to usb in other pc.

Battery works fine and I can take it out, then AC also works fine.

There are two memory cards with 4 slots, it tried all combinations but it doesn't really make a difference.

The video card is not defect I think (as sometimes there is a good screen).

Connected my laptop with a working LCD screen but this doesn't matter, when there is black screen on my
laptop there is black screen on laptop. When the Laptop works LCD also works.

I drained the power with holding the power button without battery or wired cable, but this doesn't really help.

I don't know what is really wrong and what other test I can do. Since I got the laptop the laptop gets very hot and the van always works hard. Yesterday on self diagnostic tool at the test of de graphic card the temperature of the GPU went to 78 degrees, maybe that's the problem?

XPS 13 U2414H Connection

Hi, I have a XPS13 9350 which works great. Recently, I have ordered an USB-C Dock (Dell Adapter, USB Type C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB (470-ABQN)) from USA and received it. I have also bought Dell U2414H monitor, but couldn't connect them via HDMI Cable. The Dock works great with the ethernet, USB and VGA but when I try to connect my Dell monitor, all I got is black screen and power saving mode. The computer recognizes the monitor but somehow it can not send any display output to it. I have installed the monitor driver which I have downloaded from Dell website and I have updated the Bios as well. Please advice,

Thanks in advance,

Apparently Dell has screwed me.

My manual on Studio 1747 indicates a 1747 Bluetooth Module. WRONG! There is only a mini PCIe slot.

So I added a 365 bluetooth module. No driver is recognized by Win 10 Pro. No driver update by Dell. I have tried those from Dell, Broadcom, and Lenovo. Nope.

So now I ask what combo card will work? 3160? 7260? At least there is a Win10 driver. But will the system accept card?

Tired of dongle life.

Studio 1555 - Bios beep tones (1xlong, 2xshort, 4xhigh and short)

Hi there,

I have a problem with my Dell Studio 1555 (built in 2009, Dual Core@2,0 Ghz, 4 GB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 - should be a Phoenix chipset).

Yesterday I started my laptop (energysaving-mode), the screen stayed black, no fan-activity or stuff, just the hard drive was working. Tried to restart it, nothing happend, just had these bios beep-tones (screen stays black and again no fan activity or stuff): 1x long, 2x short, 4x short (some way higher than the first two short tones).

I think, that 1x long, 2x short is something with my graphics card, at least I did not found out what these 4 high and short beeps could mean.

Does anyone know what could be the problem with my Studio?

Thanks!

XPS 13 Replacement screen no display

so I have a dell XPS 13 L321X. out of warrantee, serial number is DC64FT1

The Executive dropped it and cracked the screen, still works, boots up can work with it. I order a replacement screen from amazon, making sure I find the correct one that will work with this model. First one I received from one vendor  I install it no display, I can hear the dell startup splash sound but no display. Try the power on holding down the D key, no display. Reboot holding down the function key, for testing. I hear it go through the bootup and I hear it test the sound, but no display. I assume it's defective or DOA on delivery and send it back.

Today I get another one from a different vendor same issue, no display. perform the same steps. so I decide to check the part number on the monitor cable, it has a white quick tag number. the original screen number is CN-0N34H6-70896-26C-4289-A02

The new screen that arrived today is CN-0N34H6-70896-238-J866-A00

does anyone know if this will work in my system? Or is their another step I can perform for testing?

Inspiron 3452: free up space via deleting C:\Recovery folder and apps.ppkg?

$

On my Inspiron 3452 I was able to delete C:\Recovery to increase disk space, without ill effects in operation.  I felt if I needed to reinstall windows, the backup USB thumbdrive I created was enough.

That folder contains the "Apps.ppkg" provisioning package file in the Customizations subfolder, size 3,575,529 KB.  I saved the C:\Recovery to a thumbdrive just in case I wanted to restore it.

Well, I did reinstall from the thumbdrive.  Now I find when I try to delete the C:\Recovery folder, I cannot due to Apps.ppkg being "used by system."  When I did so from a command line in the WRE recovery environment, I lost the Bluetooth FTP device icon in "This PC", which turned into a blank icon and was not functional.  It appears the file's contents are now being used by Win 10 "live."

Copying the folder back to the computer and rebooting made the icon return.  I did not investigate any other ill effects.

My question is:  is there any way to isolate the apps.ppkg file from OS use, and delete it to once again free up space on the 32 GB eMMC without ill effects?

BIOS Updates on Linux (M3800)

How do I update the BIOS on a Linux build of the M3800?  The downloads page only provides an exe file, which doesn't work on Linux.  I also found a page that describes loading the BIOS using a bootable thumb drive, but creating the thumb drive also requires Windows.

The M3800 has been very unstable, and I'm hoping a BIOS update will help.

Help! Brand New Alienware 13" Laptop Crashing my WIFI Modem

Hello everyone,

I am having a WIFI issue with the 2016 Alienware13" laptop I just purchased and was hoping for some help. Whenever I boot up my laptop, it will connect to my WIFI connection, but very shortly after the modem itself seems to crash and reboots. I have never had any issues with my network previously (I have used two game consoles, two laptops, two cell phones, an Ipad and a wireless printer on it) and yet, when I turn off all other devices connected to WIFI aside from my Alienware, the problem persists. Is it possible that the laptop could actually be crashing the modem?

I have already contacted my internet provider, Rogers, about the issue and they cannot seem to resolve it. I have also changed out the modem itself and the issue is still occurring with the new modem.

Any help is appreciated,

-Patrick

Dell e6220 cpu idle temperature high 65 degrees and fan running constantly

$

Since last week I noticed that the fan in the Dell e6220 is running almost constantly even while the the CPU usage is low (5-20%). The indicated temp is constantly around 65 degrees, which is too high for such low usage.

I'm unable to find out why this is happening, what I did:

- ran the Dell diagnostics at boot time, which doesn't show an error. However, it shows that pre-boot the CPU temp also gets up to and stays around 65 degrees, so the problem is not OS / usage related. I've let it sit for a while and when I flip my notebook, so the bottom side is also up in the air, it cools down a bit more to 51 degrees and the fan stops running for a very short time. The CPU temp shoots up again and the fan starts running again.
- the fan is working properly and is going up in steps to max when the CPU temp goes up
- I have never really checked how warm the hot air blown out actually is, but it seems to cool like it should
- checked for dust inside around the fan and openings, but everything is clean
- the heatpipe gets as warm as the heatsink, so the heat seems to be transported correctly (I thought that the heatpipe might not transport the heat anymore)
- the heatsink gets warm, but is clearly not that warm as I can touch and keep holding it, so I'd say it's only around 40 degrees.

Would it then be the thermal paste connecting the CPU to the heatsink that has dried out? Where is the actual temp measured? This may explain the difference between the heatsink temperature of about 40 degrees and the read temperature in the system of 65 degrees.

What else can I check to find out the cause of this problem? What else could be the cause of this problem?

Hope someone can help!

Problem with refund - Dell communication not great...

$

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, but getting frustrated with Dell so need to vent in a different channel!

I ordered a 17inch Inspiron, and requested a refund on the 25th of Jan due to a faulty screen.

This refund requested was processed, and I waited a couple of weeks, with some chasing every couple of days.

Dell sent the couriers round last week, without informing me they were coming, so nobody was in to give them the laptop. I could not schedule another day for pickup as this has to be done through Dell.

I asked for this to be rearranged and to be told the day that it would be picked up so I could make sure somebody was in.

The couriers came, but again, I was not informed of the day so nobody was in.

I'm not left in the same situation, with requesting another pickup, but wondering if Dell will let me know in advance when to expect them.

It seems a waste of Dell and mines time and money to keep doing this.

Also, Dell have now had my money for nearly a month, and I'm out of pocket by over £500 as I have since bought a new laptop.

The laptop was paid for on a credit card, which we pay off the full balance of each month. I'm very close to getting interest charges due to the length of time that Dell have taken to arrange a simple pickup and refund.

Can anyone from Dell help here? If so, I would be very grateful - as I do not want to get interest charges, and if I do, I will be seeking compensation.

Thanks for reading.

Dell Inspiron 11-3147 BIOS A09 problem

Hi!

After installation of latest BIOS A09 version for Dell Inspiron 3147 I got some problems with boot.

  1. Pause about 10-15 seconds during boot after Dell logo.
  2. Start (logon) screen not appear after boot and I see black screen till I do not touch screen.
  3. PC does not start from Sleep mode, while Hibernation mode works,

No matter of Windows 8.1 or 10, drives etc. I have tried different installation of drives, settings and Windows 8.1/10.

Downgrade to old version of BIOS A07 fixed all above mentioned problems. Why Dell has provide BIOS that made user experience awful? For those who have similar problems after installation of BIOS A09 version - you can download old version of BIOS from Dell downloads page downloads.dell.com/.../inspiron-11-3147-laptop.html

Dell xps 13 9350 downgrade windows 8.1, trackpad not working and other issues.

I have removed the original Win10 and reinstalled from scratch Win8.1 Pro on my Dell xps 13 9350.
I have downloaded all the possible drivers from the official "Dell driver download" page and run them all in the order suggested. Also the BIOS is updated. However, there are still several devices not recognized:

1. There is no Win8.1 driver for the trackpad. The one of Win10 is not compatible with Win8.1, so the trackpad is currently recognized in the device manager as PS/2-compatible. Moral: the scroll function does NOT work!!

2. Under "other devices" I get two "PCI data acquisition and signal processing controller" icons and one "unknown device" flagging "there are no compatible drivers for this device"

3. After installing the latest drivers (February updates -not sure which one in particular created the problem) I now get also under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and icon with "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" flagging "this device cannot start. (Code 10)"

While I can live with 2. and 3., the issue 1. with the trackpad is VERY annoying, and it would be great if Dell would provide a driver for it (btw., this model is now more than 3 months on the market).

PS: the February update seems has fixed part of the problems with the WiFi and with mouse. I could solve them temporarily in January by installing other drivers of another model (Dell xps 15 9550), in particular these two:
Communications_Driver_G12X1_WN32_1.400.31.0_A00.exe
Input_Driver_Y9Y7K_WN32_19.0.15.2_A00.exe

external SSD

Hi , I have a Dell 7470. Each time I connect an external SSD (tried Samsung and Sandisk), i am able to see the files and transfer easily between the laptop and the external ssd. However if i try to access the file directly (excel.word or pdf) directly on the ssd, the programme and the system hangs!

Dell has done a bios update + changed the motherboard, but the problem persists. Tried different USB ports but the same problem always.

Can somebody help? thanks.
