Dell Inspiron 1420 - won't power up (only blue LEDs blink)

0
0

Have here a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop purchased in 2008, with Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM and Windows 7. It's

been extremely well treated and lightly used. Never had any issues with it before.

Well, last night I attempted to turn on my laptop only to discovered it has spontaneously died. If I

press the power button, there is NO activity from the fan, hardisk or screen. The only sign of life is

the power LED on front lights solid up for 5 seconds, and then goes out. If I plug in the DC

wall-charger, power LED lights up for 5 seconds, goes out, and then the battery LED blinks once every

10 seconds.

Holding down 'FN' while pressing power results in more LEDs, the Bluetooth and caps/num/scroll-lock

lighting up briefly. In otherwise, apart from a few LEDs lighting up, it is completely, and utterly

dead.

Tried the following...

- Removed battery

- Tried powering up with DC charger only (also tried a different charger)

- Removed both memory DIMMs (also tried popping in a different DIMM from spare parts)

- Removed DVD burner

- Removed SATA hardisk

- Removed WIFI card and modem card

- Unplugged CMOS/clock battery

- Removed and reseated CPU and heatsink

Likely a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting, including giving it some dirty looks and cursing at it.

Grrrr. If I've missed something, I'm opened to other suggestions though!

The last thing I did with the laptop was leave it plugged in and charging the battery for several

hours, while sitting idle at the Windows desktop. Then did a Windows shutdown. Did it overheat or

something?

At this point I assume the motherboard is at fault. Question is, WHAT kind of fault? Could it be GPU

related, or some capacitor issue? Likely it's out of warranty and not worth the cost of replacing the

motherboard, but I wonder if doing a reflow of the GPU with a heatgun might bring it back. Nothing to

lose expect my time but thought I'd see if anyo

Purely frustration

September 2014 when I first bought my first ever laptop (dell inspiron 15 5547 the i7 version)  using my parent's hard earned money. I was 18 that time when I got my first laptop so I was so happy. Fast forward to December 18, 2015 when I tried opening my laptop but it won't on. I noticed that the light on the charger goes off when I'm trying to connect the charger to the laptop. I didn't do anything it just didn't turned on. I visited 4 service centres and they told me that the motherboard is dead and they recommended me to just buy a new one. You think I still have the means to buy one?  It's not under warranty anymore. Perfect timing right? Now I can't finish my business plan (project in school so you can graduate) and other school related activities. Even playing games and watching movies. Knowing that this can't be fix anynore why am I still writing this? Frustration. I'm very frustrated. Knowing that your parent's hard earned money goes to waste. I should not have trusted ny future to dell. Thank you for destroying dreams!

New Inspiron 15 5559 screen blinking /flickering

Took delivery of a new Inspiron from Dell outlet yesterday. The screen flickers every few seconds when browsing windows. Seems to get worse when doing browsing. It does not flicker when starting up and on the log in to Windows page which makes me think it's not a problem with the display.

At the moment it is unusable, very disappointing for a new laptop.

Any help appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 5520 beeps continually on startup, takes a few tries to turn on successfully

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop. It's an i5 processor, 6 GB of RAM, about three and a half years old.

About two months ago I attempted to boot up the laptop. With the screen black, it started to beep continuously (I waited about thirty or forty seconds and it didn't stop) so I forced a shutdown and tried again, then it booted up fine.

Sporadically over the last few weeks it did the same thing, but the laptop appears to run just fine once it's successfully booted.

Then about 2 weeks ago I had to try two or three times to get it to start up without the beeping and black screen. The last few days, half the time it'll start successfully the first time and other occasions it takes 2-3 tries. Yet there still appear to be no issues once i get it up and running.

What are common causes for this issue? Is it bound to keep getting worse until it breaks entirely? I wish I could take it to a repair shop but I'm broke, so I'm wondering whether I can just suffer through the annoyance, or if I'll have a totally destroyed laptop on my hands before long.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

Hello, I tried to format my laptop using a Windows 7 cd since Dell didn't gave me the original. After the first step there was a message about a failure and I am stuck to the following stage:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Any help? Thanks in advance Stylianos

Hi guys!

I just got  old  dell latitude e4300 from my uncle with windows 7 32bit

.I know dell e4300 is not good for games  but since CPU is 64 bit based i was thinking to switch to win 64bit... i also add 2gb more of Ram so now i have 6 gb

Now my question is since on my PC i mostly play game called Dragon nest and i was also able to run it on this laptop with no lag but i kinda got fps drops  when there is alot effects going around in game..

Would windows 7  64 bit give  me a bit of a speed?  or better performance?

Thanks for answers!

Dell M6700 SATA configuration.

Purchased a used M6700, seems to work fine until installed a second hard drive in unit.

Now upon occasion at boot time the laptop will try to boot from the second drive not the one with w7.

Changes to the ESATA – drives ( 0 – 5) in BIOS setup seem to have an effect on boot selection.  Not clear to me how this works.

Is there any clear documentation on the ESATA  drive configuration, I can find nothing of substance.

Thanks, Hank

Inspiron 5535, Win10, won't boot after Avast anti-virus update.

Running an Inspiron 5535, windows 10, 8MB Ram with Avast as antivirus SW. Avast antivirus definitions were updated 2/8 and Avast asked to re-boot to apply updates.

System reboot failed. Appears to be hung midstream in the boot process. Ran the ePSA preboot system assessment and that test detected no errors.

Switched the reboot process to the legacy reboot process. Was thinking that if I could get to safe mode, I could uninstall Avast  (assumng Avast was the source of the boot error). The legacy reboot also hangs up.

Ran Dells diagnostics for this type of boot error to no avail.

Windows 10 is current as a series of win10 updates were applied last week.

Has anyone run into a similar situation and successfully solved it?  Any suggestions on other types of fixes?

Thanks in advance......

Inspiron 1525 ATA vs AHCI

Someone gave me an Inspiron 1525 to look at because it would "freeze" on her. The laptop belongs to an animal rescue.

The laptop came originally with Vista Basic and someone installed a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

The laptop would go into endless repair loop when the BIOS SATA setting is in AHCI. It would only boot up cleanly to Windows 7 if I change the setting to ATA.

Is this a problem?

XPS 13 9333 (Haswell) BIOS version A08 gets stuck in reboot

Since upgrading to BIOS version A08, when I reboot, the laptop gets stuck at the Dell splash screen and never completes POSTing. The computer remains unresponsive and can only be fixed by powering off and then back on.

This happens any time I reboot.

OS is Ubuntu 15.10 with 4.5 kernel, however the issue occurs with older kernel versions as well. I believe the problem isn't OS-related due to the issue occurring during POST.

Is this issue affecting anyone else?

XPS 15 9550 Freeze randomly - Black screen

My XPS 15 9550 - quad core i5 freezes randomly - the screen will turn black (or grey), but not the windows BSOD. I have to hold the power button to force shutdown and reboot the laptop when this happens.

Tried updating all drivers, not helpful, clean installed windows 10, didn't help.

This could happen anytime, even at the time I'm not touch my laptop, or running anything.

Seems to be driver related or hardware.. anyone have some issues?

Dell XPS L421X Stuck at Logo Screen

Laptop: Dell XPS L421X

Fixed HDD: ST500LT012-9WS142 500GB

m-SATA: SAMSUNG SSD PM830 mSATA 32GB

I have a Dell XPS L421X laptop which originally came with a mechanical hard disk. Eventually, I decided to replace the mechanical hard disk with a SSD. However, while performing the Windows installation, I deleted all partitions on the m-SATA and now I am not able to boot with anything.

The laptop still turns on and I am able to enter the BIOS (F2) as normal but it just hangs and won’t pass the Dell logo screen when I try to boot with anything. In addition, I am no longer getting the Intel RAID option (Ctrl + I) prompt during startup.

I can still access the “F12” option but when I try to run the Diagnostics or select Windows Boot Manager, a blank black screen appears. Entering the BIOS is the only option that works.

If you are familiar with this issue or have any troubleshooting advice, please let me know! Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Dell Latitude E6420 with WWAN card Dell Wireless DW 5560 WWAN Mobile Broadband

Hello everyone,

I recently bought myself a used modem DW5560 for my Latitude E6420.

According to the modem page this modem is not for E6420 system but for some others (e.g. E6430). And of course the driver installation initially failed with error that Authentication failed and this device is not compatible with my system.

I did not give up. I found on Dell forums that I can still install the driver by copying driver files from temp folder and then install from unpacked raw driver files.

Done! Driver v 7.2.7.3 has been installed. "This device is working properly" message on device manager's area.

But still something is wrong... When I try to establish connection with my provider there is:

"Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated."

And now i am out of ideas. Anyone able to point me where to go next? Maybe I need different driver files after all?

Dell Inspirion 3521.

I have a Dell Inspirion 3521. The battery will not charge. Here are the thing s I have tried so far. I hate to scrap this laptop because I like the design. I haven't taken it apart yet, pending any help I might get from this forum.

1. The battery and the power adapter will work in another 3521 I have access to. The battery will charge with either power adapter and the power adapter will charge either battery.

2. On the 3521 that works if the power adapter is plugged in and the battery is removed the laptop will stay on. On the one that won't charge it will not stay on when the battery is removed.

3. When plugged in the status for the battery shows that it is charging but it slowly loses charge.

4. I have tried to enter the  diagnostic stage by removing the battery and holding the power button down and at the same time connecting the power adapter. Nothing happened.

5. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Any help would be appreciated as this is out of warranty. Thanks in advance for your time.
