High Resolution on Latitude D830

I am a trained laptop technician, however I don't know everything.  I have an old Latitude D830.  I have discovered they came with 3 different LCDs.  I have the middle one, WSXGA+ at 1680x1050.  I would like the WUXGA 1920x1200 one.  I have found the screens on eBay, but I know it's not as simple as taking the old screen off, and putting the new one on.  But I think if I have the right inverter for the LCD, and the right LVDS cable, it would work.  I have heard toWatch out for your motherboard problem if you have Nvidia chipset, Bad MB cause by Nvidia chipset will cause screen to displace incorrect picture, black screen and many more issues.  What is this about?  Does anyone know what this is?  Does the WUXGA LCD require a special motherboard?  I want to hear anything anybody knows, every little bit helps.

Thanks

Inspiron 13 7347 2 in 1 cracked screen

Yesterday evening, the screen on my daughter's laptop started going haywire, and it was only after switching it off that I noticed a hairline crack in the screen, running from top to bottom.

It has not been dropped, or suffered any abuse, so cannot establish what caused it.

I contacted Dell this morning, who didn't even ask about the nature of the crack, just insisted it wasn't covered under the warranty and that I would have to pay for a replacement, (£283 for an engineer, or £201 for the screen only).

To be honest, if the screen was £50 to replace, I would just get over it, but I do not believe the problem was caused by accidental damage, (is there a way to prove that ?) and I wondered this was a frequent occurance with this model.

I ran Dell Backup & Recovery from boot menu. It says it will work on the system partition. I felt it was ambiguous whether that would include the partition lettered C. I have an Inspiron 3451.

Dell Inspiron 17 Laptop Defective

On November 19 I ordered a Dell laptop Inspiron 17. (Dell Purchase ID 2005388068063) On November it was delivered to the long defunct address of a non-profit I used to do computer support for. Eventually, it found its way to the new address of the non-profit (CONTACT of Mercer County). I no longer do work for them, but they called me, and I picked it up. It is defective. After much time on the phone with Klaid_842810Dell | Technical Support Specialist, including diagnostics which I emailed to him as requested, he said he arranged for a refund. Emails available. The last email I received stated that the laptop had been registered as a small business enterprise and that he could not help me. Tonight, after spending 58 minutes on the phone number he provided, I was told the queue was closed. I have bought many computers from Dell in the past, both in my capacity as a volunteer for a non-profit and personally. This was a PERSONAL PURCHASE paid with my credit card. As proof, sales tax was charged. I feel that you are simply waiting until the return time is up so that you can keep my money. I thought that once you, Michael Dell, was back in charge, customer service would improve. I was wrong. I will post this message on all social media available to me

Dell Recovery Disk

Hi

I bought my laptop few days ago refurbished and it didn't came with a recovery disk.  The recovery partition on the hdd is corrupted and I cannot use that. Is there any chance dell will send a back up media (my machine is out of warranty). Their online recovery disc reorder only works for laptops that is under warranty.

Is there any place where I can download the iso file or order a recovery disk or backup media?

Thanks

Syed

Hi, my computer crashed while i was doing a factory restore and i had to clean-install windows in order to get it booting again (cleaned my recovery partition with the factory image on it)

I asked dell and they said they don't provide factory images and that i would have to re-install everything manually.

But I was thinking, maybe someone here can send me a copy of their restore media if they have the same model? I would appreciate it so much! I'm not sure if it has to be an identical system but i have:

Faster charging

I own a Dell 7520. I use a 90w AC adapter that came with the system.  However, charging is slow. If I am playing a video game it charges about 1% an hour and if I turn the unit off it charges about 25% an hour.

Is there any charger that works faster? I hate not being able to use my laptop for four hours while the battery charges.

Inspiron 7353 CPU fan doesn't come on during CPU load, leading to graphics distortion and overheating

Inspiron 13 2-in-1 Special Edition 7353 i7 6500u 2.5GHz 3.1GHz turbo 256GB SSD 8GB ram FHD display

When performing a CPU intensive task or stress test for 1 to 5 minutes and the CPU reaches a certain temperature (63C as reported by SpeedFan or 78C as reported by BatteryCare), the graphics on the laptop screen (or external HDMI monitor) will shake horizontally and flicker.  I'm assuming this is because of overheating.  However, the fan will still not turn on until the CPU temp reaches around 82C.  (I usually stop the intensive task before this point)  When I stop the CPU intensive task, the flickering immediately stops and the CPU cools down.  No error messages appear, the BIOS Thermal event log is empty and there is nothing in the Windows Event Log that appears relevant to overheating.

However If I run any graphics GPU stress test or the memory stress test, the fan comes on as expected and there are no problems.  The Dell Diagnostics (F12 at boot) didn't find any problems.

The problem occurs on both the current BIOS and the original BIOS, and can occur on AC (active cooling) or battery power (passive cooling).

Disabling Intel SpeedStep through BIOS seems to help, but this isn't optimal since it locks the processor at 2.59GHz, which is both lower than the expected 3.1GHz turbo frequency and I assume would waste battery power when idle.

The problem is more noticeable when using the updated "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" drivers.  (The original 8.1.10600.150 version that came pre-installed seems to have TurboBoost disabled (regardless of BIOS setting), so the processor usually stays cool enough even without the fan on)

Laptop Repair

Hi,

I've purchased a Dell Inspiron 3521 two years ago.

Already, it has been repaired 4 times (!) and there are still problems. Let me explain:

First of all, I've replaced the HDD drive with an SSD and I've also added 2GB of RAM. (these upgrades took place after the first repair).

I've contacted the local support many times, and they do not want or they can't solve my issue. My problem is that the touchpad gets warm, and I can't use it after half hour, because I'm rubbing at a plastic piece at 50 celsius degrees! I don't know what's wrong with my laptop, but this issue has probably caused the overheat problems that led to 3 motherboard replacements!!

Each time after a repair, I called the support and informed them that the problem was not solved, and each time I felt embarrassed about asking my rights (the machine was still in warranty).

The last repair took place a week ago, where they changed my motherboard and heatsink. I called the support the next day and informed them that the issue wasn't resolved. For some reason they didn't log the last heatsink replacement, so they decided to change it again (2 times in a week).

Two days ago, the technician run the diagnostics and the laptop reached a temperature of 56-57 degrees, which I believe it's normal. They also replaced the palmrest (all the plastic part including the touchpad). Ofcourse the technician's responsibilities did not include actually using the laptop to examine if it's usable, so everything was "ok".

I've tested the machine earlier that night, and tomorrow morning I called to report that the touchpad was still warm after half hour of use, whilst the rest of the laptop was cool. This half hour, I was browsing the internet and watched youtube videos, nothing too much.

I called the support to report this (again) and they asked me to remove the extra parts that I've added (SSD + RAM) and run the diagnostics again. Not very surprisingly, the laptop reached 64-65 degrees, instead of 56-57. When I told them the results, the response was that I'd better keep my extra parts on the laptop, and they would call a supervisor.

Today they sent me an email, saying that there's nothing they can do anymore.

To sum up, I've had my laptop repaired 4 times in 1 year, and 1 week after the latest repair, I'm forced to use a mouse device and always keep my laptop on a fan base, and all these whilst using the parts that I've paid for!!

Can somebody contact me and help me resolve my issue?

Is there anything I can do or should I look for a new laptop (after my latest experience, of course it won't be a Dell) ?

Thank you in advance,

Alex

Is 130W power supply enough for Dell XPS 17 L701X?

$

Hello, everyone!

My laptop (Del XPS 17 L701X) started to freeze randomly, so I was thinking that my power supply may be failing (sometimes my laptop also lost power if I the power supply a little bit while connected, sometimes the same supply made a buzzing noise). I have to say, unfortunately this supply was not genuine Dell part, but some "Delta Electronics" supply. Anyway, I googled for Dell genuine power supply and found this one: Dell 130-Watt 3-Prong AC Adapter with 6 ft Power Cord

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=331-5817&mfgpid=208399

So that is one that I ordered (bear in mind, I don't have the original one that I bought my laptop with), but when I plugged it in, my Dell issued a warning, that AC power supply with only 130W is connected, the system may operate slower and that  I need 150W or more. Turns out my Laptop originally came with a 150W power supply, but even at the DELL official page it is said, that this 130W supply is the real deal. So I would like to know it this 130W supply will be enough or should I send this one back and exchange for 150W one. Do I have the risk to not to have enough power?

I have found on one page that this particular laptop consumes 123.2W on full throttle, if this helps (I have no means to test this myself, I believe).

Replacing 128GB SSD in Studio XPS 1645 with 500GB SSD

$

Hello,

I am the original owner of a Studio XPS with a 128GB SSD (Part #: F510M). I am out of space and need more hard drive space (not more external space). I am thinking of purchasing the 500GB SSD (Part #: 342-5946) but not sure if the laptop can handle it and if I need any type of adapter/spacer. If the part is good as a replacement then my next question is what I need to do to move the contents (including the operating system to get this done)? Or should I have someone like the Geek Squad at Best Buy do this for me? Not sure what my options are or how extensive it is to move everything from one drive to another.

Need to download original Cyberlink Power DVD DX OEM software but "My Dell Downloads" scanning software keeps hanging after XMLError!%£

Hi,

I have a Latitude E6410 and the registry recently became partially corrupted following attempted removal of rogue Bluetooth drivers.  Managed to repair all of the affected s/w and drivers except I need to reinstall PowerDVD DX from Cyberlink that was originally bundled OEM and the repair disk is packed somewhere in storage whilst house has major work.

After doing some research directed to the My Dell Downloads page.

After agreeing to the terms and conditions and clicking register, it downloaded some software, displayed the "Examining your computer please wait ..." message and then a  "xmlError: [object Error]".  After clicking Ok the site does not progress, it just sits there for hours.

I have rebooted, cleaned cookies and retried several times with no progression on the problem.

Does anyone know of a fix for this, or is anyone having the same problems?  Any help would be appreciated.

Most s/w and drivers are up to date, e.g., Microsoft .net framework at 4.5.2, running IE 11.0.25, Windows 7 professional 32 bit SP1 etc.

BTW, noticed following several years use I now have installed Dell Support Assist, Dell System Detect, and Dell System Manager - not sure if these conflict with My Dell Downloads??

Thanks.

Is a 130W power supply enough for Dell XPS 17 (L701X)?

Hello, everyone! My laptop (Del XPS 17 L701X) started to freeze randomly, so I was thinking that my power supply may be failing (sometimes my laptop also lost power if I the power supply a little bit while connected, sometimes the same supply made a buzzing noise). That is the one I ordered, but when I connect it, my laptop issues a warning, saying that AC adapter of only 130W is detected ant the system will work slower. I need to connect 150W or more (!) for the computer to operate at full speed. Which is strange, because this exact power supply is listed on Dell's official page. But it turns out that my laptop came with a 150W power supply originally (which I do not have anymore, so I cannot test it or compare it with the new one).

So, I would like to know if this 130W power supply is powerful enough for my computer or I should ship it back and search for a 150W one? I have no means to make a test, but I found on this page, that at full power l701x consumes  about 123W.
